Physicochemical perturbation increases nitrous oxide production from denitrification in soils and sediments

Abstract. Atmospheric concentrations of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas that is also responsible for significant stratospheric ozone depletion, have increased in response to the intensified use of agricultural fertilizers and other human activities that have accelerated nitrogen cycling processes. Microbial denitrification in soils and sediments is a major source of N2O, produced as an intermediate during the reduction of oxidized forms of nitrogen to dinitrogen gas (N2). Substrate availability (nitrate and organic matter) and environmental factors such as oxygen levels, temperature, moisture, and pH influence rates of denitrification and N2O production. Here we describe the role of physicochemical perturbation (defined here as a change from the ambient environmental conditions) in influencing rates of denitrification and N2O production. Changes in salinity, temperature, moisture, pH, and zinc in agricultural soils induced a short-term perturbation response characterized by lower rates of total denitrification and higher rates of net N2O production. The ratio of N2O to total denitrification (N2O : DNF) increased strongly with physicochemical perturbation. A salinity press experiment on tidal freshwater marsh soils revealed that increased N2O production was likely driven by transcriptional inhibition of the nitrous oxide reductase (nos) gene and that the microbial community adapted to altered salinity over a relatively short time frame (within 1 month). Perturbation appeared to confer resilience to subsequent disturbance, and denitrifiers from an environment without salinity fluctuations (tidal freshwater estuarine sediments) demonstrated a stronger N2O perturbation response than denitrifiers from environments with more variable salinity (oligohaline and mesohaline estuarine sediments), suggesting that the denitrifying community from physicochemically stable environments may have a stronger perturbation response. These findings provide a framework for improving our understanding of the dynamic nature of N2O production in soils and sediments, in which changes in physical and/or chemical conditions initiate a short-term perturbation response that promotes N2O production that moderates over time and with subsequent physicochemical perturbation.

Temperature and Ozone Response to Different Forcing in the Lower Troposphere and Stratosphere

To evaluate the contributions of different forcings to the temperature and atmospheric composition changes between 1980 and 2020, we exploited the chemistry-climate model (CCM) SOCOLv3. The study examined ozone content and atmospheric temperature response to (1) ozone-depleting substances; (2) greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean surface temperature, and sea ice coverage; (3) solar irradiance; and (4) stratospheric aerosol loading and, separately, (5) greenhouse gas concentrations, (6) ocean surface temperature and sea ice coverage, and (7) NOx surface emissions. To evaluate the impacts of specific factors, we performed model runs driven by each factor (1–7) variability as well as a reference experiment that accounted for the influence of all factors simultaneously. We identified the relative contribution of different factors to the evolution of the temperature and ozone content of the lower troposphere and stratosphere from 1980 to 2020. The model results were in good agreement with the reanalyses (MERRA2 and ERA5). We showed that stratospheric ozone depletion before the Montreal Protocol introduction and partial recovery after that were chiefly driven by ODS. Stratospheric aerosol from major volcanic eruptions caused only short-term (up to 5 years) ozone decline. Increased greenhouse gas emissions dominate the ongoing long-term stratospheric cooling as well as tropospheric and surface warming. Solar irradiance contributed to short-term fluctuations but had a minimal long-term impact. Furthermore, our analysis of the solar signal in the tropical stratosphere underscores the complex interplay of solar radiation with volcanic, oceanic, and atmospheric factors, revealing significant altitudinal distributions of temperature and ozone responses to solar activity. Our findings advocate further innovative methodologies to take into account the nonlinearity of the atmospheric processes.

Recycling Fly Ash into Lightweight Aggregate: Life Cycle Assessment and Economic Evaluation of Waste Disposal

This study analyzed environmental impacts and economic feasibility to evaluate whether recycling fly ash, which has rarely been addressed in previous studies, as a raw material for lightweight aggregates can be a sustainable waste management alternative. This study presents a comparative analysis of three disposal scenarios: landfill disposal, recycling as cement raw material, and recycling as lightweight aggregate raw material. Nine environmental impacts were assessed through life cycle assessment (LCA): acidification, global warming, eutrophication, photochemical oxidation, stratospheric ozone depletion, human toxicity, freshwater aquatic ecotoxicity, marine aquatic ecotoxicity, and terrestrial ecotoxicity. The results showed that the landfill disposal scenario posed the greatest threat to global warming, eutrophication, and marine aquatic ecotoxicity, while the cement scenario had the greatest impact on stratospheric ozone depletion, human toxicity, and other ecotoxicity items while recycling as lightweight aggregate showed the lowest environmental impacts in most items except acidification and photochemical oxidation. Life cycle costing (LCC) analysis was also performed to compare the economic aspects of each scenario. The lightweight aggregate scenario is more energy-intensive and costly, but it has significant economic benefits due to the significant revenues from the products produced. Therefore, even though the cost is high, this scenario is considered economically advantageous. This study highlights that recycling fly ash into lightweight aggregate reduces environmental impacts, provides economic benefits, and is a better alternative to landfilling and recycling cement raw materials. It will also contribute to promoting sustainable practices of fly ash recycling.

Unexplained high and persistent methyl bromide emissions in China

Methyl bromide (CH3Br) is an important ozone-depleting substance whose use is regulated under the Montreal Protocol. Quantifying emissions on the national scale is required to assess compliance with the Montreal Protocol and thereby ensure the timely recovery of the ozone layer. However, the spatial-temporal patterns of China’s national CH3Br emissions remain unclear. Here we estimate the national emissions of CH3Br in China during 2011−2020 using atmospheric observations at 10 sites across China combined with an inversion technique (top-down) and compare those with an updated inventory of identified emission sources (bottom-up). Measured CH3Br mole fractions are enhanced well above the background mole fractions, especially at sites in eastern China. Top-down emission estimates exceed bottom-up estimates by 5.5 ± 1.4 gigagrams per year, with the largest fraction (60%) of observationally derived CH3Br emissions arising from underestimated or unidentified emissions sources. This study shows the potential impacts of the unaccounted emissions on stratospheric ozone depletion, with implications for the Montreal Protocol.

Comparative environmental and economic assessment of emerging hydrometallurgical recycling technologies for Li-ion battery cathodes

The growing demand for electric vehicles has led to a growing concern for battery recycling, particularly for critical raw materials. However, there is insufficient investigation into the environmental and economic impacts of hydrometallurgical recycling methods. In this study we explored emerging hydrometallurgical technologies in economic and environmental perspective to establish conceptual routes to recover Co, Ni and Mn oxides from waste LiNi0.33Mn0.33Co0.33O2 cathode materials from spent Li-ion batteries. After, life cycle assessment and costing techniques were utilized to compare the environmental and economical performances of each conceptual route. Recovery efficiency of metal oxides through each route was also considered as a key factor. Results suggested that deep eutectic solvent-based leaching produces the highest impact under many impact categories while electrolysis-based leaching showed the least. Under purification technologies assessed, ion-exchange based purification showed significantly lower impact under many categories except stratospheric ozone depletion. Solvent based purification has been identified as the worst technology for purification. Hydroxide based calcination has been identified as the most environmentally sustainable calcination method compared to oxalate calcination. The route consists with inorganic leaching, ion-exchange based purification and hydroxide calcination showed the lowest environmental impact (emission effect at 33.8 kg CO2 eq), with lower economic impact ($ 119) and the highest recovery efficiency (78 %) per 1 kg of cathode active materials. However, using electrolysis-based leaching can slightly increase the impacts with lower recovery efficiency (75 %) and better economic performance ($104/kg of cathode active materials). Terrestrial ecotoxicity was identified to be the most affected impact category for the recovery processes. It is recommended that technologies like deep eutectic solvent-based leaching, solvent extraction and environmentally sustainable technologies like supercritical fluid extraction need further studies prior to industrial applications.

Comparative life cycle assessment of three types of crumb rubber modified asphalt under different system boundaries

This study employs a life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify the environmental impacts of three crumb rubber recycling technologies in asphalt rubber (AR) mixtures: wet, dry, and terminal blend. The analysis identifies key factors affecting their environmental performance across the life cycle. Results were characterized into climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, fine particulate matter, terrestrial acidification, marine eutrophication, freshwater ecotoxicity, human toxicity, and Land use. Dynamic rankings of the three AR technologies along their life cycle stages in each impact category would enable identification of the influencing factors and provide reference for the further improvement. This study reveals that dry technology is likely to have the most significant environmental impacts across all categories (51.85 %-100 %), whereas terminal blended technology generally presents the lowest impact (51.85 %-88.89 %), with the exception of freshwater ecotoxicity (33.33 %) and human toxicity (22.22 %), where wet technology shows the least impact. The analysis underscores the importance of asphalt mixture designs, with appropriate binder content, potential reduction in surface course thickness, and reduced maintenance frequency, as strategies to enhance the environmental performance of AR technologies. The study concludes that the environmental performance of AR pavement is highly dependent on their in-service durability, with scenario-based analysis indicating that adequate durability ensures environmental effectiveness.

Atmospheric oxidation pathways of CF3CH2CFCl2 (HCFC-234fb) with OH-radicals and Cl-atoms: insights into the mechanism, thermodynamics, and kinetics.

The atmospheric oxidation of 1,1-dichloro-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropane, HCFC-234fb (DTP), leads to the formation of harmful radicals, contributing to stratospheric ozone depletion. Thus, a detailed study of the gas-phase oxidation of the first-generation chlorofluorocarbon alternative HCFC-234fb by a reaction with hydroxyl radicals and chlorine atoms is important to understand its harmful effects on the environment. In this work, we have performed quantum chemical calculations to investigate the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the titled reaction. The potential energy profile calculated at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//MP2/cc-pVTZ level of theory shows that the major reaction pathway involves the abstraction of the H-atom from the central carbon atom, C2, giving rise to the product radical CF3C˙HCCl2F. The calculated rate-coefficients for the reaction with ˙OH and Cl-atoms are 3.89 × 10-15 and 2.54 × 10-17 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, respectively, at 298 K and are in accordance with the experimental rate coefficients. The results suggest that the rate-coefficient for the reaction of DTP with ˙OH is two orders of magnitude higher than that with Cl-atoms, indicating greater significance of the former reaction in the atmosphere. With the rate-coefficient values, the lifetime and the radiative efficiency were calculated to be 8.2 years and 0.246 W m-2 ppb-1, respectively. A 100-year global warming potential (GWP) of 712 was also estimated using the lifetime corrected radiative efficiency value.

Effects of Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxides on Climate Change in Afghanistan

Climate change is a global threat to the environment and human health. Two of the main greenhouse gases that cause the greenhouse effect and raise global temperatures are carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. In this review paper, we investigated the effects of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides on climate change and the effects of climate change on Afghanistan. We found that high concentrations of carbon dioxide, which is now CO2 levels, have increased by 50% than before the Industrial Revolution, contributing to a rise in global temperature and precipitation. At the same time, Nitrous oxide is an important greenhouse gas, with 310-fold higher potential for global warming than CO2 and leads to the depletion of stratospheric Ozone and other Nitrogen oxides, has a significant impact on plant health, including effects on chlorophyll levels, oxidative stress, and antioxidant responses. Afghanistan’s climate change is predicted to increase the country’s prevalence of illnesses linked to dust storms and poor air quality, especially in Kabul, the nation’s capital. In addition, air pollution in Kabul is also likely to increase as a result of climate change. The alarming impacts of air pollution, with more than 3,000 deaths attributed to air pollution annually. Additionally, at least 700,000 individuals in Kabul have experienced various respiratory diseases. Due to climate change, Afghanistan’s total glacier area has shrunk by 13.8%. In 2023, Afghanistan experienced early snow melt and below-average precipitation, causing second-season and irrigated crops to have less access to water. Reducing emissions and coping with the changing climate are essential steps towards tackling the complex issues these gases present and their wider effects on the environment and human health.

Life Cycle Assessment Analysis Based on Material Selection in Sustainable Airport Buildings

Sustainable airport buildings aim to minimize environmental impacts through energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management. This is achieved by employing green building materials and utilizing renewable energy sources to reduce their carbon footprint. In this study, life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to assess the environmental impacts of three main construction materials—concrete, steel, and wood—used in sustainable airport buildings. These materials were selected for their widespread use in eight different airport terminal buildings with sustainability certifications. The environmental impacts of these materials were calculated and compared using OpenLCA 1.9.0 software and the ECOinvent database, adhering to the standards set forth by the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) initiative. The findings indicate that wood, as a construction material, has a significantly lower impact on global warming compared to steel and concrete, with a global warming potential (GWP) ratio of less than 60%. Steel, with a GWP of approximately 90% of that of concrete, also showed a lower impact than concrete. Additionally, other environmental impacts, such as stratospheric ozone depletion potential (ODP) and acidification potential (AP), were also examined, highlighting the trade-offs associated with each material.

NosZ II/nosZ I ratio regulates the N2O reduction rates in the eutrophic lake sediments

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a more potent greenhouse gas with an atmospheric lifetime of 121 years, contributing significantly to climate change and stratospheric ozone depletion. Lakes are hotspots for N2O release due to the imbalance between N2O sources and sinks. N2O-reducing bacteria are the only biological means to mitigate N2O emission, yet their roles in lakes are not well studied. This study investigated the potential for N2O reduction, keystones of typical and atypical N2O-reducing bacterial communities, and their correlations with environmental factors in the sediments of Lake Taihu through microcosm experiments, high-throughput sequencing of the nosZ gene, and statistical modeling. The results showed that potential N2O reduction rates in sediments ranged from 13.71 to 76.95 μg N2O g−1 d−1, with lower rates in December compared to March and July. Correlation analysis indicated that the nosZ II/nosZ I ratio and the trophic lake index (TLI) were the primary factors influencing N2O reduction rates and N2O-reducing bacterial community structures. The genera Pseudogulbenkiania and Ardenticatena were identified as the most abundant typical and atypical N2O-reducing bacteria, respectively, and were also recognized as the keystone taxa. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) results revealed that nosZ II was more abundant than nosZ I in the sediments. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) further demonstrated that atypical N2O-reducing bacteria had significant positive effects on N2O reduction process in the sediments (p < 0.05). Overall, this study highlights the crucial ecological roles of atypical N2O-reducing bacteria in the sediments of the eutrophic lake of Taihu, underscoring their potential in mitigating N2O emissions.

Perspective on Theoretical and Experimental Advances in Atmospheric Photochemistry.

Research that explores the chemistry of Earth's atmosphere is central to the current understanding of global challenges such as climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, and poor air quality in urban areas. This research is a synergistic combination of three established domains: earth observation, for example, using satellites, and in situ field measurements; computer modeling of the atmosphere and its chemistry; and laboratory measurements of the properties and reactivity of gas-phase molecules and aerosol particles. The complexity of the interconnected chemical and photochemical reactions which determine the composition of the atmosphere challenges the capacity of laboratory studies to provide the spectroscopic, photochemical, and kinetic data required for computer models. Here, we consider whether predictions from computational chemistry using modern electronic structure theory and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations are becoming sufficiently accurate to supplement quantitative laboratory data for wavelength-dependent absorption cross-sections, photochemical quantum yields, and reaction rate coefficients. Drawing on presentations and discussions from the CECAM workshop on Theoretical and Experimental Advances in Atmospheric Photochemistry held in March 2024, we describe key concepts in the theory of photochemistry, survey the state-of-the-art in computational photochemistry methods, and compare their capabilities with modern experimental laboratory techniques. From such considerations, we offer a perspective on the scope of computational (photo)chemistry methods based on rigorous electronic structure theory to become a fourth core domain of research in atmospheric chemistry.

Life Cyle Assessment of Activated Carbon from Waste Materials as an Adsorbent in Wastewater Treatment

Activated Carbon (AC) has been a great alternative to reduce the cost of the process in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) but they also have several hidden impacts on the environment. The impact assessment on the waste materials from coconut shells and wood will be identified using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software approach. Through the “Cradle-to-gate” approach, activated carbon made from waste materials is produced and consumed, and its eighteen environmental effects which are fine particulate matter formation, fossil resource scarcity, freshwater ecotoxicity, freshwater eutrophication, global warming, human carcinogenic toxicity, human non-carcinogenic toxicity, ionizing radiation, land use, marine ecotoxicity, marine eutrophication, mineral resource scarcity, human health, terrestrial ecosystem, stratospheric ozone depletion, terrestrial acidification, terrestrial ecotoxicity and water consumption are assessed using the LCA software. This study aims to discover whether the choice of waste material precursors from the Activated Carbon (AC) can help to minimise environmental impacts. The study evaluates the potential benefits of using waste-derived activated carbon in wastewater treatment by comparing the environmental performance of activated carbon obtained from coconut, wood, and coal. This study is based on past studies all around the world. In thirteen of the eighteen impact categories, wood has the greatest environmental impact. Coconut shells on the other hand, has the lowest total environmental impacts, ranking first or second in fifteen among the eighteen environmental categories. The findings help in making choices for environmentally friendly wastewater treatment methods by illuminating the effects of employing waste products as an alternative source of adsorbents.

Development of the adjoint of the unified tropospheric–stratospheric chemistry extension (UCX) in GEOS-Chem adjoint v36

Abstract. Atmospheric sensitivities (gradients), quantifying the atmospheric response to emissions or other perturbations, can provide meaningful insights on the underlying atmospheric chemistry or transport processes. Atmospheric adjoint modeling enables the calculation of receptor-oriented sensitivities of model outputs of interest to input parameters (e.g., emissions), overcoming the numerical cost of conventional (forward) modeling. The adjoint of the GEOS-Chem atmospheric chemistry-transport model is a widely used such model, but prior to v36 it lacked extensive stratospheric capabilities. Here, we present the development and evaluation of the discrete adjoint of the global chemistry-transport model (CTM) GEOS-Chem unified chemistry extension (UCX) for stratospheric applications, which extends the existing capabilities of the GEOS-Chem adjoint to enable the calculation of sensitivities that include stratospheric chemistry and interactions. This development adds 37 new tracers, 273 kinetic and photolysis reactions, an updated photolysis scheme, treatment of stratospheric aerosols, and all other features described in the original UCX paper. With this development the GEOS-Chem adjoint model is able to capture the spatial, temporal, and speciated variability in stratospheric ozone depletion processes, among other processes. We demonstrate its use by calculating 2-week sensitivities of stratospheric ozone to precursor species and show that the adjoint captures the Antarctic ozone depletion potential of active halogen species, including the chlorine activation and deactivation process. The spatial variations in the sensitivity of stratospheric ozone to NOx emissions are also described. This development expands the scope of research questions that can be addressed by allowing stratospheric interactions and feedbacks to be considered in the tropospheric sensitivity and inversion applications.

Tropical eastern Pacific cooling trend reinforced by human activity

It remains unresolved whether the La Niña-like sea surface temperature (SST) trend pattern during the satellite era, featuring a distinct warming in the northwest/southwest Pacific but cooling in the tropical eastern Pacific, is driven by either external forcing or internal variability. Here, by conducting a comprehensive analysis of observations and a series of climate model simulations for the historical period, we show that a combination of internal variability and human activity may have shaped the observed La Niña-like SST trend pattern. As in observations, SSTs in each model ensemble member show a distinct multi-decadal swing between El Niño-like and La Niña-like trend patterns due to internal variability. The ensemble-mean trends for some models are, however, found to exhibit an enhanced zonal SST gradient along the equatorial Pacific over periods such as 1979–2010, suggesting a role of external forcing. In line with this hypothesis, single-forcing large ensemble model simulations show that human-induced stratospheric ozone depletion and/or aerosol changes have acted to enhance the zonal SST gradient via strengthening of Pacific trade winds, although the effect is model dependent. Our finding suggests that the La Niña-like SST trend is unlikely to persist under sustained global warming because both the ozone and aerosol impacts will eventually weaken.

Perspectives on life cycle analysis of solar technologies with emphasis on production in India

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the solar power industry, business, and supply chain for 2019–2021, and installations are falling behind the mission plan. However, Indian PV manufacturers see it as a chance to engage in solar manufacturing to establish a competitive, sustainable, and robust domestic solar industry instead of import-based installations. Given the country's current environmental concerns, green and sustainable local manufacturing is the only viable alternative. By conducting a life cycle assessment (LCA), this study compared the environmental impacts generated by the five most promising photovoltaic technologies-mono-silicon, polysilicon, copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), cadmium telluride (CdTe), and passivated emitter and rear contact (PERC) solar modules considering manufacturing in India. The study utilizes the ReCiPe method supported by Ecoinvent 3 databases and Simapro V9.0 software, and the functional unit for the data collection is in ‘per square meter’, which is later converted to ‘per kWh’ standard for comparison with the existing studies. The system boundary selected is from cradle to gate. The results demonstrate that cadmium telluride (CdTe) is the best technology for Indian climatic conditions in terms of environmental impact, with a global warming potential of 0.015 kg CO2 eq/kWh, stratospheric ozone depletion of 5.41E-09 kg CFC11 eq/kWh, human carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic toxicity of 6.67E-04 kg 1,4-DCB/kWh and 1.48E-02 kg 1,4-DCB/kWh, respectively and fine particulate matter formation of 3.96E-05 kg PM 2.5 eq/kWh assuming a lifetime of 25 years for these modules. CIGS follows CdTe in almost every environmental impact category.

Adsorption behavior of HFCO and COF2 gasses on pristine, Al-doped, and N-doped (8, 0) single-wall carbon nanotubes and pristine aluminum nitride nanotube: A first-principles study

The detection of organic pollutants in the environment is crucial due to their significant impact on human health. Formyl fluoride (HFCO) and carbonyl fluoride (COF2) are toxic gasses that contribute to stratospheric ozone depletion. To explore a potential sensor material for these compounds, the adsorption properties of HFCO and COF2 on pristine (8, 0) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), aluminum-doped SWCNTs (Al-SWCNTs), nitrogen-doped SWCNTs (N-SWCNTs), and aluminum nitride nanotube (AlNNTs) were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Obtained structural and electronic results reveal no significant after HFCO and COF2 adsorption on pristine SWCNT. However, the conductivity and polarizability of Al- SWCNT increases throw HFCO and COF2 adsorption. It was shown that this adsorption strongly depends on molecular orientation toward SWCNT. Structural and electronic findings show that studied molecules undergoes a physical adsorption to N- SWCNT. However, AlNNT was also found to show significant changes in structural and electronic properties after HFCO and COF2 adsorption. This adsorption leads to a significant (nearly 45%) reduction in the HOMO-LUMO gap of AlNNTs. Therefore, it is proposed from this study that Al-SWCNTs and AlNNTs are promising candidates for HFCO and COF2 gas sensors. Moreover, AlNNTs exhibit intrinsic detection capabilities without structural manipulation via doping which makes AlNNTs particularly attractive for sensor applications. Moreover, the capability of AlNNT without manipulating makes this nanotube a good and easy made candidate for these compounds adsorption.

Smoke-charged vortex doubles hemispheric aerosol in the middle stratosphere and buffers ozone depletion.

Australian mega-wildfires in the summer of 2019-2020 injected smoke into the stratosphere, causing strong ozone depletion in the lower stratosphere. Here, we model the smoke plume and reproduce its unexpected trajectory toward the middle stratosphere at ~35-kilometer altitude. We show that a smoke-charged vortex (SCV) induced and maintained by absorbing aerosols played a key role in lofting pollutants from the lower stratosphere and nearly doubled the southern hemispheric aerosol burden in the middle stratosphere. The SCV caused a redistribution of stratospheric aerosols, which boosted heterogeneous chemistry in the middle stratosphere and enhanced ozone production, compensating for up to 70% of the ozone depletion in the lower stratosphere. As global warming continues, we expect a growing frequency and importance of SCVs in promoting the impacts of wildfires on stratospheric aerosols and chemistry.

Global impacts of an extreme solar particle event under different geomagnetic field strengths

Solar particle events (SPEs) are short-lived bursts of high-energy particles from the solar atmosphere and are widely recognized as posing significant economic risks to modern society. Most SPEs are relatively weak and have minor impacts on the Earth's environment, but historic records contain much stronger SPEs which have the potential to alter atmospheric chemistry, impacting climate and biological life. The impacts of such strong SPEs would be far more severe when the Earth's protective geomagnetic field is weak, such as during past geomagnetic excursions or reversals. Here, we model the impacts of an extreme SPE under different geomagnetic field strengths, focusing on changes in atmospheric chemistry and surface radiation using the atmosphere-ocean-chemistry-climate model SOCOL3-MPIOM and the radiation transfer model LibRadtran. Under current geomagnetic conditions, an extreme SPE would increase NOx concentrations in the polar stratosphere and mesosphere, causing reductions in extratropical stratospheric ozone lasting for about a year. In contrast, with no geomagnetic field, there would be a substantial increase in NOx throughout the entire atmosphere, resulting in severe stratospheric ozone depletion for several years. The resulting ground-level ultraviolet (UV) radiation would remain elevated for up to 6 y, leading to increases in UV index up to 20 to 25% and solar-induced DNA damage rates by 40 to 50%. The potential evolutionary impacts of past extreme SPEs remain an important question, while the risks they pose to human health in modern conditions continue to be underestimated.

Testing a novel life cycle assessment based framework for produced water management from offshore oilfield operations

As worldwide reliance on the petroleum industry persists, environmental concerns associated with offshore oilfield operations continue to present a critical challenge for sustainable management. This study develops and tests a novel life cycle assessment (LCA)-based framework to examine strategies for produced water (PW) management from offshore oilfield operations. The framework encompasses experimental designs under a dynamic modelling system coupled with stepwise linear regression, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), and fluctuating scenarios in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and other internal reuse options including cooling systems, drilling operations, and utility services. Two strategies for treatment train technologies were tested with various PW compositions, sludge management options, and variable EOR demands. When comparing conventional (corrugated plate interceptor, hydrocylone and nutshell filter) with recent treatment/disposal technologies (tubular separation, combined fiber coalescence and mechanical vapor compression), the LCA revealed that the latter increased operational efficiency (14%), reduced cost (6.5%) and the overall environmental impact categories (66%). The scenario that exhibited the lowest emissions incorporated recent treatment technologies and land application for sludge management. This configuration demonstrated considerable environmental advantages, evidenced by significant reductions in key impact indicators including freshwater eutrophication (74%), global warming (64%), marine ecotoxicity (58%), and stratospheric ozone depletion (44%) when compared to the baseline scenario with conventional treatment-disposal methods. The system dynamics model revealed that the internal reuse options exploited 23%–47% of PW inflow, indicating a significant annual surplus of unused PW that presents an opportunity for external applications to enhance sustainability. In closure, we argue that the proposed framework offers a valuable tool for waste management practitioners, facilitating the identification and selection of strategies with minimal environmental impacts for PW management.

The Spillover of Tropospheric Ozone Increases Has Hidden the Extent of Stratospheric Ozone Depletion by Halogens

AbstractStratospheric ozone depletion from halocarbons is partly countered by pollution‐driven increases in tropospheric ozone, with transport connecting the two. While recognizing this connection, the ozone assessment's evaluation of observations and processes have often split the chapters at the tropopause boundary. Using a chemistry‐transport model we find that air‐pollution ozone enhancements in the troposphere spill over into the stratosphere at significant rates, that is, 13%–34% of the excess tropospheric burden appears in the lowermost extra‐tropical stratosphere. As we track the anticipated recovery of the observed ozone depletion, we should recognize that two tenths of that recovery may come from the transport of increasing tropospheric ozone into the stratosphere.
