Tailoring zirconia surface topography via femtosecond laser-induced nanoscale features: effects on osteoblast cells and antibacterial properties

The performance and long-term durability of dental implants hinge on the quality of bone integration and their resistance to bacteria. This research aims to introduce a surface modification strategy for zirconia implants utilizing femtosecond laser ablation techniques, exploring their impact on osteoblast cell behavior and bacterial performance, as well as the integral factors influencing the soft tissue quality surrounding dental implants. Ultrafast lasers were employed to craft nanoscale groove geometries on zirconia surfaces, with thorough analyses conducted using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and water contact angle measurements. The study evaluated the response of human fetal osteoblastic cell lines to textured zirconia ceramics by assessing alkaline phosphatase activity, collagen I, and interleukin 1βsecretion over a 7 day period. Additionally, the antibacterial behavior of the textured surfaces was investigated usingFusobacterium nucleatum, a common culprit in infections associated with dental implants. Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a widely used antibacterial antibiotic, was loaded onto zirconia ceramic surfaces. The results of this study unveiled a substantial reduction in bacterial adhesion on textured zirconia surfaces. The fine biocompatibility of these surfaces was confirmed through the MTT assay and observations of cell morphology. Moreover, the human fetal osteoblastic cell line exhibited extensive spreading and secreted elevated levels of collagen I and interleukin 1βin the modified samples. Drug release evaluations demonstrated sustained CIP release through a diffusion mechanism, showcasing excellent antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria, includingStreptococcus mutans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, andEscherichia coli.

Surface Engineering Enhances Vanadium Carbide MXene-Based Nanoplatform Triggered by NIR-II for Cancer Theranostics.

Despite the advantages of high tissue penetration depth, selectivity, and non-invasiveness of photothermal therapy for cancer treatment, developing NIR-II photothermal agents with desirable photothermal performance and advanced theranostics ability remains a key challenge. Herein, a universal surface modification strategy is proposed to effectively improve the photothermal performance of vanadium carbide MXene nanosheets (L-V2C) with the removal of surface impurity ions and generation of mesopores. Subsequently, MnOx coating capable of T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging can be in situ formed through surface redox reaction on L-V2C, and then, stable nanoplatforms (LVM-PEG) under physiological conditions can be obtained after further PEGylation. In the tumor microenvironment irradiated by NIR-II laser, multivalent Mn ions released from LVM-PEG, as a reversible electronic station, can consume the overexpression of glutathione and catalyze a Fenton-like reaction to produce ·OH, resulting in synchronous cellular oxidative damage. Efficient synergistic therapy promotes immunogenic cell death, improving tumor-related immune microenvironment and immunomodulation, and thus, LVM-PEG can demonstrate high accuracy and excellent anticancer efficiency guided by multimodal imaging. As a result, this study provides a new approach for the customization of 2D surface strategies and the study of synergistic therapy mechanisms, highlighting the application of MXene-based materials in the biomedical field.

Enhanced surface stability of K0.27MnO2·0.54 H2O cathode materials with LiF/LixPFyOz coating for potassium-ion batteries

Manganese based oxides have significant potential as cathode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIB). Unfortunately, the practical application of manganese-based oxides is hindered by severe electrode surface erosion from electrolyte decomposition products and material expansion and collapse during potassium ion intercalation. Consequently, the surface modification strategy is adopted herein to uniformly cover the surface of K0.27MnO2·0.54 H2O (KMO) microspheres with LiF/LixPFyOz coating to effectively protect the electrode surface and significantly inhibit the collapse of the material crystal structure. Additionally, the coating exhibits excellent electron/ion conductivity, enhancing the diffusion efficiency of potassium ions within the electrode material. The existence of LiF/LixPFyOz coating is confirmed by characterization measurements. The LiF/LixPFyOz-coated KMO microspheres (sample LLO@KMO-2) exhibit outstanding cyclic stability (66.3 % capacity retention at 50 mA g−1) and high discharge capacity (100.2 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1), demonstrating their excellent cycle stability. The modification strategy of LiPF6-electrolyte-solvothermal coating provides an innovative surface modification method for potassium ion batteries, showcasing its potential for application in future high-performance battery technologies.

In situ preparation of MOF-74 for compact zincophilic surfaces enhancing the stability of aqueous zinc-ion battery anodes

Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), while celebrated for their environmental friendliness, abundant material availability, and inherent safety, face significant challenges that curtail their performance and lifecycle. These challenges include the formation of zinc dendrites, susceptibility to electrolyte corrosion, and the propensity for hydrogen evolution reactions. Addressing these critical issues, our research introduces an innovative surface modification strategy for zinc anode of ZIB with mild electrolyte, by the in-situ synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF-74) facilitated by the mild acidity of a 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DHTA) methanol solution. The zincophilic sites and pore structure introduced by MOF-74 to substantially enhance the surface properties of zinc anodes and accelerate the solvation process, enabling uniform zinc deposition, inhibiting dendrite growth, and significantly bolstering corrosion resistance and electrochemical stability. Combination of physical and electrochemical characterization techniques are employed to validate the successful implementation of MOF-74 on the zinc anode surface and its resultant benefits. When tested in full cell setups with α-MnO2 as the cathode, the MOF-74 modified zinc anodes displayed exceptional cyclic stability and rate performance, surpassing those of unmodified counterparts. This investigation highlights the potential of MOF materials to address the electrochemical challenges facing zinc anodes, offering a straightforward yet efficacious strategy to enhance the performance and longevity of ZIBs.

Minimizing Contact Resistance and Flicker Noise in Micro Graphene Hall Sensors Using Persistent Carbene Modified Gold Electrodes.

Scalable micro graphene Hall sensors (μGHSs) hold tremendous potential for highly sensitive and label-free biomagnetic sensing in physiological solutions. To enhance the performance of these devices, it is crucial to optimize frequency-dependent flicker noise to reduce the limit of detection (LOD), but it remains a great challenge due to the large contact resistance at the graphene-metal contact. Here we present a surface modification strategy employing persistent carbene on gold electrodes to reduce the contact resistivity by a factor of 25, greatly diminishing μGHS flicker noise by a factor of 1000 to 3.13 × 10-14 V2/Hz while simultaneously lowering the magnetic LOD SB1/2 to 1440 nT/Hz1/2 at 1 kHz under a 100 μA bias current. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the lowest SB1/2 reported for scalable μGHSs fabricated through wafer-scale photolithography. The reduction in contact noise is attributed to the π-π stacking interaction between the graphene and the benzene rings of persistent carbene, as well as the decrease in the work function of gold as confirmed by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy. By incorporating a microcoil into the μGHS, we have demonstrated the real-time detection of superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SNPs), achieving a remarkable LOD of ∼528 μg/L. This advancement holds great potential for the label-free detection of magnetic biomarkers, e.g., ferritin, for the early diagnosis of diseases associated with iron overload, such as hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC).

Silanization Strategies for Tailoring Peptide Functionalization on Silicon Surfaces: Implications for Enhancing Stem Cell Adhesion.

Biomaterial surface engineering and the integration of cell-adhesive ligands are crucial in biological research and biotechnological applications. The interplay between cells and their microenvironment, influenced by chemical and physical cues, impacts cellular behavior. Surface modification of biomaterials profoundly affects cellular responses, especially at the cell-surface interface. This work focuses on enhancing cellular activities through material manipulation, emphasizing silanization for further functionalization with bioactive molecules such as RGD peptides to improve cell adhesion. The grafting of three distinct silanes onto silicon wafers using both spin coating and immersion methods was investigated. This study sheds light on the effects of different alkyl chain lengths and protecting groups on cellular behavior, providing valuable insights into optimizing silane-based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) before peptide or protein grafting for the first time. Specifically, it challenges the common use of APTES molecules in this context. These findings advance our understanding of surface modification strategies, paving the way for tailoring biomaterial surfaces to modulate the cellular behavior for diverse biotechnological applications.

Carbonated Beverage Chemistry for High-Voltage Battery Cathodes.

Advanced lithium-ion batteries utilize high upper cut-off voltages up to 4.8V versus lithium metal to reach extraordinary energy densities. Such a harsh environment challenges the cathode stability and requires the construction of robust cathode electrolyte interphases at their electrochemical interface. Inspired by carbonated beverages with supersaturated CO2, here, a surface modification strategy that produces effective passivation layer of low modulus from the weakest link, is proposed CO2 bubbles preferentially nucleate and grow at rough surfaces, which in oxide cathodes, are also the local regions offering fast degradation pathway. Metal ion exchange on carbonated layer assists the construction of highly elastic interface under the guidance of packing factor. This method enables surface reconstruction at both primary and secondary particle levels for various cathodes exemplified by high-voltage LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) and LiCoO2 (LCO). Remarkably, with ultra-high upper cut-off voltage of 4.8V versus Li+/Li, over 235 mAh g-1 discharge capacity, and over 900W h kg-1 discharge energy at cathode level, ≈90% capacity retention can be obtained for LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 over 100 cycles at 0.5 C with commercial carbonate electrolytes. This carbonated beverage chemistry is promising for constructing high-quality surface passivation in many extreme-condition applications beyond battery cathodes.

Suppressed conductive loss of flower-like NiCo2O4-wrapped flaky FeSiAl for excellent low-frequency microwave absorption

Flaky FeSiAl is a high potential absorbent for low-frequency microwave applications. However, impedance mismatching due to its excessively high complex permittivity presents a challenge. Herein, inspired by the surface modification strategy, flaky FeSiAl wrapped with flower-like NiCo2O4 (NiCo2O4@flaky FeSiAl) was developed via a hydrothermal method. The introduction of a surface NiCo2O4 insulating layer was expected to reduce the complex permittivity and increase the high complex permeability in the NiCo2O4@flaky FeSiAl composite. Subsequently, an excellent low-frequency microwave absorption performance was achieved. The designed NiCo2O4@flaky FeSiAl displayed a robust minimum refection loss (RL min) of −33.41 dB at 6.32 GHz and increased the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL < −10 dB) to 4.08 GHz when the matching thickness was 1.6 mm. The enhanced low-frequency microwave absorption performance was mainly attributed to the improvement in impedance matching, which originated from the collaborative regulation of electromagnetic parameters. This study provides a promising approach for designing flaky FeSiAl-based composites and high-performance low-frequency microwave absorbents.

Lipid Nanoparticles: Versatile Drug Delivery Vehicles for Traversing the Blood Brain Barrier to Treat Brain Cancer

AbstractThe blood‐brain barrier (BBB) poses a significant challenge in delivering therapeutic agents for brain diseases due to its high selectivity against foreign substances. This limitation greatly hampers the effectiveness of conventional chemotherapeutic drugs in treating brain cancers. In response, lipid‐based nanoparticles (LNPs) have emerged as a promising approach, offering opportunities for targeted drug delivery by conjugating targeting ligands onto their surface. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in utilizing LNPs to traverse the BBB for enhanced transport of bioactive compounds into the brain, specifically for cancer treatments. Beginning with an exploration of the biological structure and functions of the BBB and the blood‐brain tumor barrier (BBTB), the review highlights the advantages presented by LNPs. Subsequently, it delves into strategies for surface modification of nanoparticles to enhance BBB targeting and improve efficacy in brain cancer treatment. Finally, the review offers insights into future prospects for designing the next generation of LNPs. The review presented herein aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts in overcoming the challenges associated with BBB penetration, ultimately advancing therapeutic strategies for brain cancer and other neurological disorders.

Surface Engineering on Bacteria for Tumor Immunotherapy: Strategies and Perspectives

AbstractBacteria have garnered significant attention in tumor immunotherapy recently years, owing to their immune‐activating properties, ease of genetic manipulation, and colonization abilities. In order to further enhance the safety, efficacy, and clinical translation potential of bacterial therapy, and to endow bacteria with additional functions, modifications or engineering of bacterial surfaces have emerged as a current research hotspot. This review systematically summarizes the primary methods and strategies for bacterial surface modification and engineering, including chemical alteration, physical modification, and bio‐modification. Subsequently, it is delve into the roles of these techniques in enhancing bacterial tumor immunotherapy, such as improving immunotherapeutic efficacy and reducing toxic side effects, and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Finally, the current challenges faced in this field are deeply explored, and potential solutions for the future are presented. This work offers a comprehensive overview of the advancements in the new generation of bacterial surface modification techniques and their implications in bacterial‐based tumor immunotherapy.

Mussel-Inspired Polymer-Based Coating Technology for Antifouling and Antibacterial Properties.

Zwitterionic coatings provide a promising antifouling strategy against biofouling adhesion. Quaternary ammonium cationic polymers can effectively kill bacteria on the surface, owing to their positive charges. This strategy can avoid the release of toxic biocides, which is highly desirable for constructing coatings for biomedical devices. The present work aims to develop a facile method by covalently grafting zwitterionic and cationic copolymers containing aldehydes to the remaining amine groups of self-polymerized dopamine. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization was used to copolymerize either zwitterionic 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine monomer (MPC) or cationic 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl trimethylammonium monomer (META) with 4-formyl phenyl methacrylate monomer (FPMA), and the formed copolymers poly(MPC-st-FPMA) and poly(META-st-FPMA) are denoted as MPF and MTF, respectively. MPF and MTF copolymers were then covalently grafted onto the amino groups of polydopamine-coated surfaces. PDA/MPF/MTF-coated surfaces exhibited antibacterial and antifouling properties against S. aureus, E. coli, and bovine serum albumin protein. In addition, they showed excellent viability of normal human lung fibroblast cells MRC-5. We expect the facile surface modification strategy discussed here to be applicable to medical device manufacturing.

Scalable Precise Nanofilm Coating and Gradient Al Doping Enable Stable Battery Cycling of LiCoO2 at 4.7 V

The quest for smart electronics with higher energy densities has intensified the development of high‐voltage LiCoO2 (LCO). Despite their potential, LCO materials operating at 4.7 V faces critical challenges, including interface degradation and structural collapse. Herein, we propose a collective surface architecture through precise nanofilm coating and doping that combines an ultra‐thin LiAlO2 coating layer and gradient doping of Al. This architecture not only mitigates side reactions, but also improves the Li+ migration kinetics on the LCO surface. Meanwhile, gradient doping of Al inhibited the severe lattice distortion caused by the irreversible phase transition of O3‐H1‐3‐O1, thereby enhanced the electrochemical stability of LCO during 4.7 V cycling. DFT calculations further revealed that our approach significantly boosts the electronic conductivity. As a result, the modified LCO exhibited an outstanding reversible capacity of 230 mAh g‐1 at 4.7 V, which is approximately 28% higher than the conventional capacity at 4.5 V. To demonstrate their practical application, our cathode structure shows improved stability in full pouch cell configuration under high operating voltage. LCO exhibited an excellent cycling stability, retaining 82.33% after 1000 cycles at 4.5 V. This multifunctional surface modification strategy offers a viable pathway for the practical application of LCO materials.

A novel chemical composite strategy for synergistically enhancing the activity and stability of strontium-containing air electrode for protonic ceramic cells

Cation segregation on perovskite electrode surfaces usually leads to a decrease in the catalytic activity of electrodes and a shortened cell life. Herein, we have developed a simple and novel chemical composite strategy to achieve selectively surface reconstruction of the Sr-rich regions in perovskite Pr0.4Sr0.6Fe0.9Nb0.1O3-δ (PSFN), constructing strongly interacting interfaces between PSFN and Fe2O3 phases. The enhanced charge transfer between the two phases in PSFN/Fe2O3 is revealed by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Meanwhile, fast surface oxygen exchange rate accelerates the migration and adsorption/desorption of oxygen species. The chemical composite electrode PSFN/Fe2O3 exhibits a smaller polarization resistance (0.35 Ω cm2) than that (0.61 Ω cm2) of the physical composite electrode PSFN + Fe2O3 at 600 °C in air. The distribution of relaxation time analyses demonstrate that enhanced reaction kinetics related to charge transfer and mass transfer are key factors in achieving stable operation of symmetric cell within 1000 h. Importantly, this study provides a simple and universal strategy for surface modification of perovskite oxides with cation separation issue, and highlights the crucial role of constructing strongly interacting interfaces in achieving high activity and stability of air electrodes.

Self-Assembled MXene@Fluorographene Hybrid for High Dielectric Constant and Low Loss Ferroelectric Polymer Composite Films.

Modern electrical applications urgently need flexible polymer films with a high dielectric constant (εr) and low loss. Recently, the MXene-filled percolative composite has emerged as a potential material choice because of the promised high εr. Nevertheless, the typically accompanied high dielectric loss hinders its applications. Herein, a facile and effective surface modification strategy of cladding Ti3C2Tx MXene (T = F or O; FMX) with fluorographene (FG) via self-assembly is proposed. The obtained FMX@FG hybrid yields high εr (up to 108 @1 kHz) and low loss (loss tangent tan δ = 1.16 @ 1 kHz) in a ferroelectric polymer composite at a low loading level (the equivalent of 1.5 wt % FMX), which is superior to its counterparts in our work (e.g., FMX: εr = 104, tan δ = 10.71) and other studies. It is found that the FG layer outside FMX plays a critical role in both the high dielectric constant and low loss from experimental characterizations and finite element simulations. For one thing, FG with a high F/C ratio would induce a favorable structure of high β-phase crystallinity, extensive microcapacitor networks, and abundant interfacial dipoles in polymer composites that account for the high εr. For another, FG, as a highly insulating layer, can inhibit the formation of conductive networks and inter-FMX electron tunneling, which is responsible for conduction loss. The results demonstrate the potential of a self-assembled FMX@FG hybrid for high εr and low loss polymer composite films and offer a new strategy for designing advanced polymer composite dielectrics.

Recent Progress on Second Near-Infrared Emitting Carbon Dots in Biomedicine.

Second near-infrared (NIR-II) carbon dots, with absorption or emission between 1000 and 1700 nm, are gaining increasing attention in the biomaterial field due to their distinctive properties, which include straightforward preparation processes, stable photophysical characteristics, excellent biocompatibility, and low cost. As a result, there is a growing focus on the controlled synthesis and modulation of the photochemical and photophysical properties of NIR-II carbon dots, with the aim to further expand their biomedical applications, a current research hotspot. This account aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in NIR-II carbon dots within the biomedical field. The review will cover the following topics: (i) the design, synthesis, and purification of NIR-II carbon dots, (ii) the surface modification strategies, and (iii) the biomedical applications, particularly in the domain of cancer theranostics. Additionally, this account addresses the challenges encountered by NIR-II carbon dots and will outline future directions in the realm of cancer theranostics. By exploring carbon-based NIR-II biomaterials, we can anticipate that this contribution will garner increased attention and contribute to the development of next-generation advanced functional carbon dots, thereby offering enhanced tools and strategies in the biomedical field.

Photo‐Arbuzov Reactions as a Broadly Applicable Surface Modification Strategy

AbstractChemical vapor deposition (CVD) polymerization is a commonly used approach in surface chemistry, providing a substrate‐independent platform for bioactive surface functionalization strategies. This work investigates the Arbuzov reaction of halogenated polymer coatings readily available via CVD polymerization, using poly(4‐chloro‐para‐xylylene) (Parylene C) as a model substance. Postpolymerization modification of these coatings via catalyst‐free and UV‐induced Arbuzov reaction using phosphites results in phosphonate‐functionalized polymers. The combination of infrared reflection‐absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) provides detailed insights into the reaction progress. Time‐dependent studies suggest that the non‐polar phosphites penetrate deep into the CVD films and react with the polymer film. In addition, ToF‐SIMS, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirm spatial control of the reaction, resulting in localized chemical and topographical surface modification, recognizable by changes in interference color, fluorescence, and wettability. Preliminary 3D fluorescence spectroscopy investigations indicate tunable near‐infrared emission of these polymer films. This work is the first step toward generating multifunctional polymer coatings based on chemically modifiable, CVD polymers with potential applications in biomaterials, sensors, or optoelectronics.

Preparation of CsPbBr3@Fe2O3 heterojunction nanocrystals for ppb-level H2S sensing

Metal-halide perovskite (MHP) nanocrystals (NCs) have unique advantages in the gas sensing field, but the poor stability restricts their widespread applications. In this work, the CsPbBr3@Fe2O3 heterojunction NCs were synthesized successfully by simple solution process and subsequent surface modification strategy for constructing a gas sensor. The Fe2O3 shell layer was obtained through thermal decomposition of acetylacetone iron (AAI) at 400 °C. The resulting CsPbBr3@Fe2O3 heterostructured NCs exhibit a higher gas-sensing performance to H2S than pure CsPbBr3 and Fe2O3, respectively. Upon exposure to 10 ppm H2S, the response value of 4.12 was obtained at a moderate working temperature of 350 °C, while the response was fast both in terms of response time and recovery time, i.e., 1.84 s and 24.20 s, respectively. This might be the best performance for MHP sensors, to the best of our knowledge. The excellent gas-sensitive response might be attributed to the formation of a heterojunction which promotes the electron migration from CsPbBr3 to Fe2O3.

Enhanced Hemocompatibility and Cytocompatibility of Stainless Steel.

The present study introduces an advanced surface modification approach combining electrochemical anodization and non-thermal plasma treatment, tailored for biomedical applications on stainless steel grade 316L (SS316L) surfaces. Nanopores with various diameters (100-300 nm) were synthesized with electrochemical anodization, and samples were further modified with non-thermal oxygen plasma. The surface properties of SS316L surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and Water contact angle measurements. It has been shown that a combination of electrochemical anodization and plasma treatment significantly alters the surface properties of SS316L and affects its interactions with blood platelets and human coronary cells. Optimal performance is attained on the anodized specimen featuring pores within the 150-300 nm diameter range, subjected to subsequent oxygen plasma treatment; the absence of platelet adhesion was observed. At the same time, the sample demonstrated good endothelialization and a reduction in smooth muscle cell adhesion compared to the untreated SS316L and the sample with smaller pores (100-150 nm). This novel surface modification strategy has significant implications for improving biocompatibility and performance of SS316L in biomedical applications.
