Governance framework for the maturation phase of the Research and Technology Development Unit of the UNAM at the Hospital General de México Eduardo Liceaga

The Case of the Research and Technological Development Unit of the Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology of the UNAM, at the Eduardo Liceaga General Hospital of Mexico, is presented and analyzed. In 2012, the parts signed a strategic alliance agreement to establish the Unit. A crucial aspect in the operation of this organization have been its governance mechanisms. The conclusion is that a governance model must be implemented for making the next growing stage of the R&D Unit feasible.

Downstream strategies of liquid smoke products as a preservative and smoke aroma in fishery products

Smoked fish is a fishery product that meets the nutritional needs of the population. The traditional smoking method leads to the production of H2S, which reduces the aroma and is carcinogenic. The liquid smoke technology offers a solution to the challenges associated with the application of traditional smoking methods. However, the use of the liquid smoke method remains limited in smoked fish businesses. This study aimed to evaluate and develop a downstream strategy for producing and distributing liquid smoke to facilitate its implementation by smoked fish businesses based on SWOT analysis. This study employed a quantitative descriptive methodology utilizing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analytical framework. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The obtained data were subjected to weight calculations using the Expert Choice tool. The research findings indicate that the optimal approach for developing downstream liquid smoke products is to create a novel product in the form of liquid smoked fish. Liquid-smoked fish are immersed in or coated with liquid smoke to achieve an extended shelf life and smoky aroma, without traditional smoking methods. In addition, it establishes a strategic alliance between scholars, entrepreneurs, and the government. Strategic relationships can be established by developing a shared agenda focusing on fostering a sustainable blue economy. The blue economy refers to the use of hygienic, healthy, and non-carcinogenic fishing products such as smoked fish to promote sustainable economic growth and enhance community welfare.

DYNAMIC CAPABILITIES AS A SUCCESS-FACTOR OF THE LONG-TERM BUSINESS ALLIANCE: THE CASE OF SIEMENS AND ATOS

Strategic alliances offer numerous benefits, including access to new markets, shared resources, and enhanced capabilities, which collectively contribute to a firm’s competitive edge. However, maintaining these partnerships over time remains a challenge due to the dynamic nature of collaborative relationships. The article is devoted to the analysis of dynamic capabilities of partnership and its role in the long-term development of the business alliance between Siemens and Atos. The specificity of dynamic capabilities is identified, namely the characteristics of "sensing," "seizing," and "reconfiguring" capabilities at the stages of partnership development between Siemens and Atos. Three stages of development of dynamic capabilities of the business alliance between Siemens and Atos are defined: the founding stage (2011-2014), the expansion stage (2015-2020), and the current stage (2021-2025). The founding stage involved mutual investments and the adoption of performance programs to enhance operational efficiency. The expansion stage saw the alliance focusing on Industry 4.0, cybersecurity, and digital strategy, with increased funding and expanded scope. The current stage emphasizes sustainability and advanced technologies like quantum computing and blockchain, along with joint initiatives and participation in research programs. It is found that over the decade of collaboration, the alliance has demonstrated the ability to adapt and evolve according to market and technological changes, based on the abilities of both partners to identify new opportunities, analyze market trends, and accordingly transform the alliance's business model. Thus continuous adaptation, investment in dynamic capabilities, and cooperative efforts with external partners are vital for maintaining mutually beneficial partnerships. The Siemens-Atos alliance serves as a case study illustrating how these capabilities can be effectively leveraged to achieve sustained success in a dynamic business environment.

The Russia–Ukraine war, the evolving global order, the Global South and emergence of non‐alignment 2.0

AbstractThe conclusion to the special section argues that the Russia‐Ukraine war has led to the emergence of non‐alignment 2.0 in the Global South because the Cold War era non‐alignment is anachronistic in the current/emerging world order. Non‐alignment 2.0 is characterised by countries exercising strategic autonomy to maximise their geo‐economic, geopolitical and geostrategic interests. They are neither aligned with the West nor with non‐western powers forming a strategic alliance. Consequently, they have been unwilling to choose a side in the Russia‐Ukraine war. In non‐alignment 2.0, states in the Global South will be critical of both the West and non‐western powers including China and Russia if they are unable to provide effective solutions to their problems and will create/provide their own norms and establish their own institutions to solve the problems facing these countries. Non‐alignment 2.0 lacks coherence because it is unable to provide an effective political and economic path.

By the year 2005, the meat business sector formed by “Rica Rondo S.A.”, “Industria Nacional de Alimentos S.A.”, “Suizo S.A.”,” Zenú S.A.”, and “Almacenes La 14 S.A.” started a new strategic alliance aiming to increase their supply chain efficiency, a strategy they named “Collaborative Carousel”. Their main goal was to improve delivery times, reception and assortment of of brands such as: “Zenú”, “Rica Rondo”, and “Suizo” in the ten “Alma - cenes La 14 S.A.” stores, looking forward to ensure the best service for the final consumer. The result of this experience helped generate a collective knowledged, which allowed everyone to identify improvement opportunities in their logistics operations. This article presents a success story based on the application of the principle of collaboration in last mile processes. The methodology used corresponds to the narrative case method, presents the business evolution of several businesses, accounts for the success of the collaborative carousel type articulation process (step by step), which links resources, actors, interests, culture, and results.

Analyzing the Reasons on Decreasing in Sales for Tesla

Since the end of the epidemic, people's travel demand has gradually recovered, and the demand for transportation has greatly increased; however, in this context, Tesla Motors has experienced a decline in sales. The aim of this study was to examine the reasons that contributed to the decrease in Tesla's sales in the first quarter of 2024. This article examines the variables that have contributed to the decline in Tesla's sales by reviewing sales statistics from previous years in Europe, the United States, and China. This study subsequently outlines the three main variables that are responsible for the decrease in sales for Tesla. The reasons include several variables, such as production challenges, increased competition, and a negative shift in client preferences. This article proposes three ideas to tackle the problem of decreasing sales: diversifying the product range, establishing strategic alliances, and enhancing the charging infrastructure. Moreover, this post has greatly advanced the electric vehicle market by clarifying the reasons for its decline and providing helpful suggestions.

Corporate misconduct and innovation: Evidence from the pharmaceutical industry

We examine the relationship between corporate misconduct and pharmaceutical firm innovation and performance. Pharmaceutical firms obtain significantly fewer new product approvals by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following corporate regulatory violations, lawsuits, and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulatory enforcement actions. We also examine the potential reasons why innovative capacity is reduced for culpable firms. Following instances of misconduct, pharmaceutical firms are 50 percent less likely to engage in business expansions, engage in significantly fewer new strategic alliances and partnerships, and are awarded fewer government R&D grants. We attribute these results to the reputational loss associated with public knowledge of corporate misconduct. In support of this hypothesis, we find pharmaceutical firms experience negative cumulative abnormal stock returns (CARs) surrounding SEC enforcement announcements, and misconduct incidents increase the probability of analyst concerns. Overall, our results are consistent with the reputational loss associated with corporate misconduct being an important factor in future reductions in pharmaceutical firm innovative capacity.

RESILIENCE IN CHANGING POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS: THE GARRI PASTORALISTS IN SOUTHERN FRONTIERS OF ETHIOPIA

While conflict and the resulting damage to livelihoods displacement are commonly seen as socio-economically and politically disruptive, yet it is essential to recognize that they can also present opportunities for social transformation and collective continuity. This study used historical methods to examine how Garri communities cope with recurring displacement and instability. Through historical analysis and interviews, the study explores Garri's resilience in a complex political setting. Garri's ability to handle crises and create stability is influenced by their historical experiences, cultural adaptations, and strategic alliances. Particularly, the Garri shift from reactive to proactive resilience helped them maintain their collective continuity and ontological security. The town-making and commercialized pastoralism highlights their adaptability to uncertainties and proactive response to evolving circumstances. Proactive resilience is irreversible, sequential, autonomous, and result-oriented. Therefore, Garri's resilience mechanisms reveal multifaceted narratives of adaptation, transformation, and strategic response, offering valuable insights into the complex dynamics of survival, living with and adapting to uncertainties, and community rebuilding within a dynamic environment. The study argues that conflict and displacement, despite their hardships, should be viewed as opportunities for collective development and continuity. Communities can achieve ontological security and collective continuity by adopting proactive resilience mechanisms and seeking constructive solutions.

MUTUAL PERCEPTION OF THE GREAT POWERS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE GENESIS OF THE WORLD WAR II (THE CASE OF SOVIET-FRENCH RELATIONS)

Perception in international relations has long been studied in political science, but historians have not paid suffi cient attention to it so far. Meanwhile, looking at known events through its prism allows us to draw new conclusions about their origins. The prehistory of World War II and its key episode — the failure of attempts to deter Hitler’s aggression in Europe through the joint eff orts of France and the Soviet Union — can serve as a fruitful field for testing this approach. For the military and political elites of France, the USSR was dangerous due to its unpredictability, but an internally fragile. This presumption leveled all the successes of the Soviet leadership in modernizing the country and the armed forces in the eyes of the French. The increased military danger in Europe after 1933 prompted Paris merely to offer Moscow the role of an ordinary participant in the system of collective security, which was based on the experience of World War I and designed as a new model for the development of international relations and minimization of conflicts between countries. The Soviet government viewed France as a leading imperialist power that prioritized anti-Soviet goals, but had a situational interest in limiting German expansion. At the same time, Moscow believed that Soviet-French cooperation could be effective only as an equal strategic alliance aimed at deterring a potential aggressor. This approach was rejected by French diplomacy, which followed the policy of appeasement. It was a source of a deep crisis in bilateral relations at the time of the 1938 Munich agreements. The collapse of appeasement in early 1939 led to a sharp turn by the French government to strategic planning for a possible war and created a window of opportunity for an agreement with the USSR. However, the inertia of old prejudices deprived the tripartite Anglo-French-Soviet negotiations in the spring and summer of 1939 of their practical content and opened the way for a Soviet-German agreement

The role of inter-organisational communication in the performance of strategic alliances: a relational perspective

PurposeThis study aims to determine whether inter-organisational communication, based on four communicational dimensions (willingness, behaviour, commitment and quality), influences the performance of strategic alliances.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve this objective, from a relational perspective, a qualitative approach was adopted, resorting to five small and medium-sized enterprises (SME)/cases in Portugal. Interviews with the key informants of these SMEs and documentary analysis were used to collect data.FindingsBased on the cases analysed, the results show that communication is fundamental, valued and implemented in the SMEs studied. However, this is informal communication, reflecting the cooperation established and not based on contracts. In these SMEs, communication is the basis for understanding the alliance’s objectives and their fulfilment, which creates satisfaction in the partners and the alliance’s success. Communication also allows an alliance to be maintained and develop continuously, creating bonds between the partners.Practical implicationsWithout that communication, alliance performance will not be possible. The study is relevant as it indicates management practices in strategic alliances based on inter-organisational communication, aiming for good performance. Therefore, it contributes to advancing knowledge about strategic alliances through the innovative link with inter-organisational communication and its applicability.Originality/valueThis study is new and innovative because it contributes to the literature in the area of strategic management, as it presents phenomena to do with inter-organisational communication and its relation with strategic alliances in SMEs, as well as advancing knowledge about the relational perspective. In addition, the application and development of inter-organisational communication, in all its communicational dimensions, are the basis for maintaining alliances over time and their performance.

A two-stage game-theoretical framework for Pricing & Management problem of shared mobility in a competitive market

ABSTRACT With the global proliferation of shared mobility systems, the vehicle-sharing market has witnessed an influx of companies and investors, thereby intensifying competition and potentially leading to suboptimal decision-making. Consequently, there is a pressing need for a modelling framework that specifically addresses operational and strategic-level policy design for multiple vehicle-sharing companies in a competitive market. In this study, we develop a two-stage game-theoretical framework to simulate the competitive process between multiple vehicle-sharing companies, facilitating their business decisions regarding pricing and management (P&M) problem, where management mainly include service area design, vehicle deployment, redirecting, and rebalancing. In the first stage of the framework, two companies operating under the same shared mobility service form a strategic alliance to compete against another vehicle-sharing service. Subsequently, in the second stage, these two companies engage in competition to maximise their individual profits. Based on the factors such as generalised travel cost, average acceptance level and vehicle availability, the competition process of each stage is formulated as a generalised Nash equilibrium problem. A linearisation method is employed for solving the equilibrium solution. Finally, we apply our proposed models to various vehicle-sharing systems and application scenarios to demonstrate their applicability. The numerical results illustrate that our model assists companies in making rational management decisions amidst intense competition while also revealing market competition landscape of vehicle-sharing systems based on different travel distances in the shared mobility market.

Strategic Alliances and Firm Innovation in Global Markets in Turkey

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the strategic alliances and firm innovation in global markets in Turkey. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: Strategic alliances significantly enhance firm innovation in global markets, particularly in Turkey. These partnerships enable firms to access resources and knowledge, driving innovation through joint R&D and technological advancements. In Turkey, alliances with multinational corporations and global partners accelerate technology adoption and best practices, boosting local firms' innovation capabilities and expanding market reach. Despite challenges like cultural differences and regulatory issues, effective alliance management can greatly benefit firms by improving competitiveness and innovation outcomes globally. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Resource-based view (RBV) theory, transaction cost economics (TCE) theory & social network theory may be used to anchor future studies on strategic alliances and firm innovation in global markets in Turkey. Enhance organizational capabilities in alliance management through training programs and knowledge-sharing platforms that emphasize best practices in partner selection, negotiation, and collaborative innovation. Develop supportive regulatory frameworks that encourage cross-border alliances and facilitate intellectual property protection, thereby reducing legal uncertainties and enhancing trust among international partners.

Will Geopolitics Accelerate China’s Drive Towards De-Dollarization?

Abstract The war in Europe has not only re-drawn strategic lines and trade flows, but with complex sanctions in place, may also have a lasting impact on currency regimes. Beyond the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a different, slower but still more strategic shift is taking place in relations between the United States and China. The US is not seeking a full decoupling of trade between China and the US and its allies – there are many deep dependencies on both sides and, overall, trade continues to grow. China, on the other hand has been casting its political and economic capital into strategic alliances that include notions of a new currency regime – in parts because of the sanctions imposed by the G7 alliance. The question for this paper therefore is whether it is still a question of if de-dollarisation is happening or rather how fast.

Implementing organizational ambidexterity using the balanced scorecard in Puebla City’s hotel industry, Mexico

PurposeThis paper investigates the effectiveness of the Ambidextrous Scorecard (ASC) in facilitating the integration of organizational ambidexterity in four-star Puebla City hotels for managing exploitation and exploration activities. It proposes an integrated approach to ambidexterity and introduces the ASC as a tool explicitly targeting hotels’ challenges and opportunities.Design/methodology/approachThe study analyzes survey data from 41 hotels (85.42% response rate). Our methodology involves a literature review, the Delphi technique for questionnaire validation, and data collection through Google Forms. Statistical tests confirm the reliability and validity of the approach for assessing the effective integration of exploitation and exploration activities.FindingsThe paper highlights how the ASC promotes an integrated approach to managing both activities. By incorporating exploitation activities (cost reduction, strategic alliances), and facilitating exploration activities (process innovation, new market attraction), the ASC empowers hotels to streamline operations, develop novel offerings, and achieve enhanced operational efficiency and innovation.Research limitations/implicationsWe acknowledge limitations due to its specific focus on the hotel industry in Puebla City, suggesting that the results may not be universally applicable. We recommended that further investigation be conducted into the application of the Ambidextrous Scorecard (ASC) across different sectors and regions to enhance understanding of organizational ambidexterity. Exploring the impact of integrating exploitation and exploration activities across corporate areas could offer valuable insights for implementing the ASC in diverse business settings.Practical implicationsThe paper indicates that hotels can achieve ambidexterity by integrating exploitation and exploration activities using the Balanced Scorecard. This approach enhances competitiveness, allowing hotels to anticipate and respond to market trends quickly. It highlights the significance of considering ambidexterity across all organizational areas to ensure sustained adaptability and performance in dynamic environments.Originality/valueThis paper introduces the concept of integrated ambidexterity and the ASC as a novel tool for managing the balance between innovation and efficiency. The ASC transcends the hotel industry, potentially benefiting various service sectors by facilitating a more integrated approach to organizational performance.

How much is enough? The role of R&D investment in the innovation process

AbstractWhile both production function (PF) and Absorptive Capacity (AC) explanations have played an important role in explaining the relationship between a firm's Research and Development (R&D) and its innovation, each has developed independently of the contributions of the other. The purpose of this study is to theoretically and empirically develop a concept of AC that incorporates the role of diminishing returns and external spillovers (i.e., strategic alliances) into a biotechnology firm's R&D‐innovation process. In using count estimations, this study finds that a firm's R&D‐innovation process is subject to a nonlinear ‐U‐shaped‐ learning process and that this process is moderated by its strategic partnerships. The contribution of this study is that it challenges the linearity assumptions and findings of AC research and that it offers a greater openness to PF explanations of the R&D‐innovation process.
