Is Artificial Intelligence ageist?

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technological innovation with wide applicability in daily life, which could help elderly people. However, it raises potential conflicts, such as biases, omissions and errors. Descriptive study through the negative stereotypes towards aging questionnaire (CENVE) conducted on chatbots ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, YOUChat, and Copilot was conducted. Of the chatbots studied, three were above 50% in responses with negative stereotypes, Copilot with high ageism level results, followed by Perplexity. In the health section, Copilot was the chatbot with the most negative connotations regarding old age (13 out of 20 points). In the personality section, Copilot scored 14 out of 20, followed by YOUChat. The Copilot chatbot responded to the statements more ageistically than the other platforms. These results highlight the importance of addressing any potential biases in AI to ensure that the responses provided are fair and respectful for all potential users.

Police Public Image through the Lens of Community Stakeholders

Police community relation is meant to combat citizen mistrust of the police force. This strategy was developed in the mid-20th century to help officers ​​work more collaboratively with the communities they are assigned to. The hope was that activities such as town hall meetings and “meet and greet” foot patrols would create a partnership between citizens and the police force, increasing trust and ultimately leading to reduced crime. This study explored the views of community stakeholders on the police public image in the province of Southern Leyte through a qualitative research method. The informants of this study were ten individuals from different sectors of society within the province of Southern Leyte. All informants were subjected to an individual in-depth interview. The findings of this study are described in emergent themes. Six (6) emergent themes described the positive and negative views of the informants regarding their current views on the public image. For the positive views, three (3) emergent themes were developed, namely Community Engagement and Cooperation, Trust in Police and Public Safety, and Commitment to Duty and Profession. For the negative views, three (3) emergent themes were also developed: Use of Excessive Force and Violence, Negative Stereotypes and Public Distrust, and Malfeasance and Inconsistent Law Enforcement. Meanwhile, two (2) emergent themes were formulated to explain how the impact of the police public image affects the community stakeholders, namely, Police as Protector and Police as Public Defender. Finally, four (4) emergent themes were formulated to explain how police activities promote community confidence and trust, namely Enhanced Police Visibility, Community Outreach Program, First Responders in Calamities, and Proactive Information Campaigns. Based on the emergent themes identified, it is recommended that the Philippine National Police (PNP) enhance the efficacy of law enforcement officers by developing stronger relationships with the public and addressing the issues pointed out in the study to restore public confidence. Essential measures may include improving community engagement through transparent communication and enhancing officer training in ethics and accountability.

Participación política de la mujer en los Andes

The women of the Andes serve as a testament to resilience and fortitude in the face of constraints imposed by social structures and stereotypes. The objective of this study is to analyze the narratives employed by women leaders regarding women’s political participation in the Andes. A qualitative methodology based on a hermeneutic-dialogical foundation was employed, whereby eight women of andean altiplano origin were interviewed using an in-depth interview guide. The questions addressed the following categories: the right to be elected, the role of women in political participation, and the obstacles faced by women in the political environment. As a result, a number of emerging subcategories were identified, including gender participatory democracy, the evolution of female political principles, the characteristics of a female leader, the socio-political aspects of women, the marginalization of women, the transition to female management, gender-related obstacles, and female vindication. These subcategories provide insight into the challenges faced by women in the struggle against sexual harassment, gender-based violence, and all forms of discrimination. They highlight the need for the development of inclusive and ethical systems that promote the rights of the gender in question.

Essentializing Muslims in Ecuadorian Journalism

The relationship between Latin America and the so-called ‘Muslim World’ is a tenuous one, as public perceptions of Muslims are generally quite negative despite consistent, typically economically beneficial historical and contemporary immigration from the Middle East. Indeed, despite Muslims constituting less than one-tenth of one percent (0.011%) of the total population in the predominantly Catholic country of Ecuador, which is located in northwestern South America, anti-Muslim sentiments are increasing both in frequency and severity. As a result, this article contextualizes the reality and challenges of Muslims in Ecuador by offering a thematic analysis of almost one-thousand articles concerning Muslims in El Comercio, the Quito-based, leading newspaper of Ecuador. Two subcorpora were created and are referenced here, one containing article titles (3,095 words) and one containing article content (543,389 words). By utilizing a computationally-driven, mixed methods approach to extract and examine these articles, this analysis is couched within the understanding that discourses surrounding Muslims overwhelmingly perpetuate and reinforce negative stereotypes through deliberate rhetorical choices.

Contemporary Narratives on Yoruba History, Modern Society in Nigeria, and the Meaning of Decolonized Humanity in the African Context

Instead of being merely a historical occurrence, colonization is a structural feature of civilizations that have been touched by colonialism, which affects the prospects for the colonial subjects. This process is still ongoing in various forms among the so-called postcolonial societies today. Therefore, decolonization is a response to both the negative stereotypes and falsehoods about Indigenous peoples and cultures as well as the structural injustices of colonially impacted society that disproportionately afflict Indigenous peoples. Even though decolonization is a hot issue in academia right now, Indigenous peoples have been fighting against colonialism for millennia and claiming their own spaces, sovereignty, and right to self-determination ever since they first came into contact with colonizers.

Theoretical and Empirical Justifications for The Development of the Questionnaire “Subjective Evaluation of Lukism in Humor”

Introduction. The paper deals with the problem of lookism (discrimination based on appearance) on the example of evaluating humorous posts and memes, which in various social situations can act as triggers of lookism. In order to diagnose sensitivity to Lukism in jokes, we attempted to prepare a basic description of the future structure of the methodology by testing a number of statements obtained by other authors in relation to different types of jokes. The novelty of the study lies in the description of the stages of preparation of the stimulus material, which allows us to study the peculiarities of perception of humor that ridicules the features of appearance and sensitivity to such jokes depending on the respondent’s experience (as a victim or a witness). Objective. To test a number of assumptions that are essential for the development of a questionnaire to examine the subjective evaluation of Lukism in humor. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted in five stages, a total of 410 participants (54 men, 356 women), aged 19 to 46 years, each stage included consideration of different components of perception and evaluation of humor in terms of the perception of it as offensive/containing lukism. Results. At each stage the peculiarities of perception of humorous posts that are distributed in social networks were revealed. It was revealed that the way of design (textual, textual-visual, as well as peculiarities of using different visual components), as well as the personal experience of respondents who faced situations of Lukism and self-assessment of respondents’ appearance influence the perception of a joke as containing or not containing Lukism, as well as the prediction of its assessment by other people as “offensive”. Discussion. Considering memes as complex, multilevel texts of identity, we see in them a significant potential for studying social norms, stereotypes and attitudes about appearance and sensitivity to the assessment of it as “non-standard” and a target for jokes. At the empirical level, we have identified a number of requirements for the selection of jokes to be included in the questionnaire: uniformity of design, use of “swear words”, visual content (images of “realistic people”), etc. An approximate structure of the future questionnaire is also presented.

Bringing birth fathers to the forefront: A two‐decade scoping review of birth father experiences in adoption

AbstractIn adoption, it is common to consider the adopted child, the adoptive parents, and the birth mother as part of the adoption galaxy. Yet, birth fathers are often missing elements in adoption‐focused research. This article aims to comprehensively understand the current knowledge regarding birth fathers' experiences in adoption. Adapting the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses approach, this review identified 100 peer‐reviewed articles published from 2000 to 2022 on birth fathers in adoption. This article used a mixed‐methods approach to analyze the landscape of the current research. Quantitative analysis confirmed that birth fathers in adoption are under‐researched worldwide. In the qualitative analysis, the following themes emerged regarding birth fathers: a lack of openness, negative stereotypes, gatekeeping, and emotional impacts. The findings demonstrate the importance of considering the wishes and support needs of birth fathers when their child is being placed for adoption.

The Appreciation of Tattoo Art among Malaysian

Tattoo art, once considered a taboo in many parts of Malaysia, is increasingly being recognized as a form of personal expression and artistic appreciation. This paper explores the evolving perceptions of tattoos within Malaysian society, emphasizing the factors contributing to their growing acceptance. Historically, tattoos were often linked to indigenous rituals, gang affiliations, or negative stereotypes. However, globalization, exposure to different cultures, and the rise of social media have shifted these perceptions, fostering a more nuanced appreciation of tattoo artistry. Through interviews, surveys, and analysis of tattoo-related media content, this study investigates the diverse motivations behind Malaysians’ decisions to get tattoos, including self-expression, cultural identity, and aesthetic appeal. The findings suggest that while conservative views persist, particularly among older generations and certain religious communities, a significant portion of younger Malaysians view tattoos as a legitimate art form. This demographic shift is influenced by the increasing visibility of tattoo artists, both local and international, who highlight the skill and creativity involved in tattooing. Furthermore, the study discusses the role of tattoo conventions and exhibitions in fostering a community of appreciation and learning. These events provide platforms for Malaysians to explore tattoo designs that resonate with their personal and cultural narratives, challenging traditional stigmas associated with body art. The paper concludes by suggesting that as societal norms continue to evolve, the appreciation of tattoo art in Malaysia will likely expand, reflecting broader global trends toward the normalization of body art as a personal and artistic choice.

In the Mind's Eye: Exploring the Relationship Between Visual Mental Imagery and Stereotyping.

How do social stereotypes shape and reflect images formed in the mind's eye? Visual mental imagery has long been assumed crucial in creating, maintaining, and perpetuating stereotypes and prejudice. Surprisingly, research in social cognition has only recently begun to explore the causal role of mental images in these phenomena. In contrast, cognitive neuroscience research on visual mental imagery (VMI) has explored the pivotal role of imagery in various consequential cognitive and behavioral phenomena. However, cognitive neuroscience has largely neglected how stereotypes influence mental imagery. This article provides a historical overview of the development of these two fields in terms of mental imagery and discusses recent advances at their intersection. Opportunities for additional integration are highlighted, and suggestions for furthering the dual study of stereotyping and mental imagery are provided. How can social stereotypes impact and mirror visual imagination? It has long been assumed that visual mental imagery plays a central role in forming, maintaining, and strengthening stereotypes and prejudice. Yet, until recently, there has been limited exploration within social psychology and cognitive neuroscience on the explicit connection between visual mental images and social stereotypes. We describe the historical progression of these fields concerning visual imagery and explore recent advancements that unite stereotyping and mental imagery research. Furthermore, we propose avenues for future research to deepen our understanding of how individuals utilize mental images in stereotyping and how mental imagery can modify stereotypes.

Not ready to make nice: Congressional candidates’ emotional appeals on Twitter

AbstractObjectiveCongressional candidates use digital platforms to bolster and define their political reputation, and political stalemates over inflation, reproductive rights, and the lasting impact of Trump politics are fueling candidates’ emotionally charged rhetoric on Twitter, especially for women. Against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's presidency and the #MeToo movement, previous research has shown that women running for Congress are leading with angry rhetoric on Twitter. In this article, we ask whether anger is a persistent feature of women's digital appeals on Twitter over time.MethodUsing a data set of tweets by candidates for the U.S. House from 2016 to 2022, we highlight the escalating anger in the emotional appeals candidates make on Twitter and the resiliency of angry rhetoric as a modern feature of political Twitter.ResultsWe find that women, most notably Democratic candidates, are more likely to convey angry emotions on Twitter, not only matching male colleagues but defying gendered social stereotypes to turn frustration into a valuable political asset. Across the four last congressional elections, women have averaged more angry words in their digital appeals, with that anger as a consistent facet of how women engage online. Women are leaning into angry emotional appeals and adopting a negative appeal in their digital engagement that highlights their policy and political frustrations for voters.

RACISM IN THE FREEDOM WRITERS MOVIE BY RICHARD LAGRAVENESE: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS PERSPECTIVE

Abstract Racism is not the strange topic anymore for the people worldwide. The idea of racism is the exclusion of a group of individuals according to their race or ethnicity. One of the movies that raised this theme is The Freedom Writers. This movie is an American biographical drama movie written and directed by Richard LaGravenese in 2007. This study will identify racism using Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis theory in the text dimension as reflected in The Freedom Writers movie. This study is a descriptive qualitative approach using Teun A. Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis and only focus on text dimension (Macro Structure, Superstructure, and Microstructure). The main theme in the movie is the struggle against racism through education with the sub-theme of education as a tool of social change, highlighting Erin Gruwell's efforts to overcome racial divisions in her classroom through innovative teaching methods. The movie's structure begins with exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution that illustrate the challenges and successes in changing attitudes and promoting inclusivity in Erin's classroom. In this study, 11 texts in the scenes were found to contain elements of racism such as racial discrimination and systemic injustice, structural racism, negative stereotyping, and ignorance of context. ‘My trust in strangers has disappeared completely’: How hate crime, perceived risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation affect fear of crime among Swedish LGBTQ students

Previous research has established correlations between anti-LGBTQ hate crime, fear of crime, perceived victimization risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation. Aside from correlations, the relationships between these variables remain poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to explore the relationships between anti-LGBTQ hate crime, perceived risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation in relation to fear of crime. Based on previous research and theory, the authors hypothesize (1) that experiences of hate crime victimization increase fear of crime, perceived victimization risk, and the concealment of sexual orientation; (2) that high levels of perceived risk result in high fear of crime and a more prevalent concealment of orientation; and (3) that the concealment of sexual orientation results in lower fear of crime. The sample consists of LGBTQ students enrolled at a Swedish university. The study uses a mixed method approach, combining survey data ( N = 353) and interview data ( N = 10). The data are assessed using path analysis and thematic analysis. The path analysis supported the authors’ hypothesis regarding experiences of anti-LGBT hate crime, perceived risk, and fear of crime. The qualitative analysis showed that victims of hate crimes had a reduced ability to process negative emotions because they experienced other traumatic life events parallel to the victimization. Similarly, feelings of being reduced to a negative stereotype resulted in higher levels of both fear of crime and perceived risk. Finally, the path analysis rejected the hypothesis that the concealment of sexual orientation results in lower fear of crime. Rather than being an agency-driven and functional fear response, the interview data showed that while these practices reduced victimization risk, they negatively impacted the overall health of the participants through feelings of lack of authenticity and self-censorship.

Navigating Higher Education Challenges: A Review of Strategies among Students with Disabilities in Indonesia

Access to higher education has been widely open for students with disabilities (SwD) as also enforced by the Government of Indonesia (GoI). However, challenges evidently face SwD in their survival of university life including limited accessible services and facilities, as well as negative stereotypes surrounding SwD. This study aimed to explore the diverse strategies adopted by SwD in navigating these challenges, examining the nuances and implications of the deployed strategies. This review explored the experiences of SwD in higher education institutions in Indonesia and adhered to the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Extension for Scoping Review) guidelines. Data were gathered from seven databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, ProQuest, Google Scholar, and Portal Garuda. In total, 17 of 1777 articles were selected based on two inclusion criteria viz. peer-reviewed articles derived from empirical studies and utilizing life experiences of SwD in Indonesian HE as the primary data source. The study identified the five key strategies employed by SwD: Adaptation, Technology Assistive Optimization, Requesting Support, Building Relationships, and Passive Action. Detailed elaboration of the findings is presented to shed light on the prominent insight to improve the quality of education services for SwD in Indonesia.

Data integrity in an online world: Demonstration of multimodal bot screening tools and considerations for preserving data integrity in two online social and behavioral research studies with marginalized populations.

Internet-based studies are widely used in social and behavioral health research, yet bots and fraud from "survey farming" bring significant threats to data integrity. For research centering marginalized communities, data integrity is an ethical imperative, as fraudulent data at a minimum poses a threat to scientific integrity, and worse could even promulgate false, negative stereotypes about the population of interest. Using data from two online surveys of sexual and gender minority populations (young men who have sex with men and transgender women of color), we (a) demonstrate the use of online survey techniques to identify and mitigate internet-based fraud, (b) differentiate techniques for and identify two different types of "survey farming" (i.e., bots and false responders), and (c) demonstrate the consequences of those distinct types of fraud on sample characteristics and statistical inferences, if fraud goes unaddressed. We provide practical recommendations for internet-based studies in psychological, social, and behavioral health research to ensure data integrity and discuss implications for future research testing data integrity techniques. Evaluating the barriers to information and communication technology adoption among older adults in Iran

ABSTRACT Technology adoption is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. This qualitative study employed the grounded theory approach to evaluate the barriers to adopting information and communication technology (ICT) among older adults. The study population included all older adults referred to an adult day care center and Comprehensive Health Centers in Shiraz, Iran, from February 2022 to March 2023. Data collection was performed using semi-structured interviews, field notes, and observation. The data were analyzed using the Corbin and Strauss approach. The four main categories extracted were as follows: technology, cultural, social, and personal factors. A total of 13 subcategories were identified, including software characteristics, hardware characteristics, perceived complexity of work, dealing with cultural norms, lack of cyberspace culture, digital divide, ageism, elder abuse, poverty, hand weakness, declining sensory functions, age-related cognitive changes, and the psychological factors. The results found in the present study indicate that there are many barriers to ICT adoption among older adults. Increased awareness and knowledge among community members about the aging process could help reduce negative stereotypes among older adults during the adoption of ICT. Also, educating the community about the proper use of social networks can effectively reduce the harassment of older adults in this space. On the other hand, the results of this study can guide ICT designers in making devices that are more suitable for the needs of older adults.

Unravelling Migraine Stigma: A Comprehensive Review of Its Impact and Strategies for Change.

Migraine-related stigma is a pervasive issue impacting nearly half of chronic migraine patients, with significant consequences for their quality of life, disability and mental health. Despite its profound effects, migraine stigma remains under-recognised in both clinical practice and research. This narrative review explores the three primary types of stigmas affecting migraine patients: public, structural and internalised. Public stigma involves negative societal attitudes and stereotypes that trivialise the condition. Structural stigma is reflected in policies that restrict access to necessary care and resources. Internalised stigma occurs when patients absorb these negative views, leading to self-blame and diminished self-worth. Addressing these different types of stigmas is crucial for improving the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of migraine. Educational efforts, advocacy and policy reform are essential strategies in this context. A deep understanding of stigma is vital for developing effective interventions that enhance clinical management and patient quality of life. Ultimately, reducing stigma can lead to better health outcomes and a more comprehensive approach to migraine care.

Gender-related stigma toward individuals with a history of sexual or physical violence in childhood

BackgroundStigma is a key barrier to disclosing traumatic experiences of violence in childhood with adverse consequences for help-seeking behaviour. Disclosing behavior differs by gender and the form of violence experienced. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies that address societal perceptions of males and females with a history of sexual or physical violence in childhood. Therefore, our aim is to focus on the impact of gender on the perception of individuals who experienced sexual or physical violence in childhood.MethodsWe conducted a study on a representative sample of the German general population in terms of age and gender. Participants were randomly assigned to brief case vignettes addressing sexual or physical violence in childhood. Analyses base on a sample of n = 659 individuals (50.1% female). Stigma was assessed through examining respondents’ readiness to address specific traumas in conversation and respondents’ attitudes toward the individuals in the vignettes. Mann–Whitney U tests were applied to check for differences between female and male victims and survivors as well as female and male respondents.ResultsOur results reveal that male victims and survivors face higher negative stereotypes (harm, unpredictability) and evoke communication barriers more often when compared to female victims and survivors, especially in male respondents. Sexual violence is associated with more distinct gender differences than physical violence.ConclusionsFindings reflect greater stigma toward male victims and survivors of sexual violence than female ones. Men had a greater tendency to stigmatize – especially toward their same-gender peers. Socially ingrained gender roles may act as a basis for different communication cultures and the notion of victim-perpetrator constellations in which males are not envisaged as victims.

Age of the examiner and older people's memory performances: A test of the stereotype threat theory using variations on negative age stereotypes across 18 European countries

AbstractThis study investigated whether the age of examiner effect, that is, the positive relation between cognitive performance of older people and age of their examiner, relies on stereotype threat. Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), European Social Survey, European Statistical Office (Eurostat) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe were crossed. Older people from different countries were tested on verbal short‐ and long‐term recall components of memory, by examiners of different ages. Country‐specific indicators of negative age stereotypes, related to the stereotype threat mechanism, were used. We expected that the age of examiner effect would be stronger in countries with more negative age stereotypes. The results replicated the age of examiner effect, but contrary to our hypothesis, this effect was not moderated by countries’ indicators of negative age stereotypes. Negative age stereotypes across countries, such as experienced discrimination among older people, lack of active ageing index, unemployment ratio and perceived negative competence of older people decrease memory. The results are discussed in relation to stereotype threat theory.

Media and the Mediation of Conflict: The Role of Journalism in Indonesian Football Supporter Violence

Football supporter violence in Indonesia is a significant issue exacerbated by sensationalist media coverage that often emphasizes conflict and negative stereotypes. This study analyzes how media framing influences football supporter behavior and public perception, using Galtung's peace journalism theory as a framework. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observations, and content analysis of media reports. The findings reveal that sensationalist reporting and negative portrayals of supporters contribute to increased tensions and aggressive behaviors. Conversely, though rarely used, peace journalism techniques potentially de-escalate conflicts and promote positive interactions. The study highlights the critical role of cultural and socio-economic factors in shaping media narratives and supporter behavior, suggesting the need for context-sensitive peace journalism. These results advance the theoretical understanding of media framing and conflict resolution and emphasize the importance of ethical journalism. Practical recommendations include adopting balanced reporting practices, collaborative campaigns between media and sports organizations, and further research into the long-term effects of media framing. By promoting responsible journalism, stakeholders can help mitigate violence and foster Indonesia's more inclusive and peaceful football culture.

The Role of Outdoor Mindfulness Intervention in Optimizing Mental Well-Being in Adolescents with Specific Learning Disabilities

Adolescents with specific learning disabilities may experience mental well-being challenges as a result of struggling academically, facing social stigma, being subjected to negative stereotypes, and experiencing heightened levels of anxiety, poor mental health, lower self-esteem, and increased stress. This study explores the potential benefits of outdoor-based mindfulness interventions as a complementary approach to remedial education, in improving mental well-being in adolescents with specific learning disabilities. This study was conducted at an institution that gives remedial education for children with specific learning disability in Thrissur, Kerala. Convenient sampling was used to select 30 students aged 13-18 years. Later, participants were randomly divided into two groups the experimental group (n=15) received outdoor mindfulness training in addition to their regular remedial education program. In contrast, the control group (n=15) received only remedial training. The study duration spanned four weeks, during which the mindfulness group participated in weekly outdoor mindfulness sessions conducted individually. They were instructed to practice mindfulness exercises daily between sessions. Both groups were assessed using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS) at the beginning (pre-intervention) and at the end (post-intervention) of the four weeks to measure changes in mental well-being. The outdoor mindfulness interventions included a range of activities, designed to optimize the level of well-being experienced by the participants in their day-to-day lives. These activities focused on enhancing the skills of mindfully listening, walking, breathing, and observing without any judgments of self and surroundings and being in the present at the moment. Results indicated significant improvements in mental well-being scores among participants in the mindfulness group compared to the control group. This underscores the potential of integrating mindfulness practices into educational settings to enhance emotional regulation and overall well-being in adolescents with specific learning disabilities, highlighting interdisciplinary opportunities across psychology, education, environmental psychology, public health, and social work to support comprehensive student development.
