“Sista Doctas” Taking a Seat at the Table: Advocacy and Agency Among Women of Color in Teacher Education

The research literature devoted to examining the experiences of faculty from diverse backgrounds in higher education has contributed to a growing understanding of the complexities of working in these institutions, particularly predominantly White institutions. An analysis of the literature is provided, which yielded the following themes as central to the extent to which Faculty of Color successfully navigate life in the academy: isolation, resistance, teaching, and mentoring and support. These themes are exemplified through personal narratives from each of the coauthors, all Women of Color in teacher education. The authors conclude with recommendations for program development in higher education, proactive steps for Women of Color in these settings, and areas in need of further exploration and research.

Posters in a sample of professional worksites have no effect on objectively measured physical activity

Whether posters promoting stair use are effective in increasing objectively measured physical activity in a sample of New Zealand professional employees. Forty-six participants (27 men and 19 women) recruited from two professional worksites wore one sealed pedometer during all waking hours (total physical activity [TPV]), and another sealed pedometer during working hours (worksite physical activity [WPV]), for three days over four separate occasions. The study protocol was a crossover design with the first worksite receiving the treatment (posters) for three weeks, followed by a six-week washout period, then a three-week control. The second worksite received the control prior to the treatment period. Measurements were taken at the beginning and end of each three-week block. The posters were ineffective at increasing objectively measured work and total physical activity levels in this sample. Trivial (0.04) to moderate Cohen effect sizes (-0.79) were shown. When posters were visible in the worksites, mean step counts decreased (-868 steps [WPV], and -1,861 steps [TPV]). Women's step counts (-9% [WPV] and -13% [TPV]) were more negatively affected by the posters' appearance when compared with men (-2% [WPV] and -8% [TPV]).

Women step up to the top jobs at Wakefield Council

An award‐winning equality scheme has helped almost to treble the proportion of senior‐management jobs held by women at Wakefield Council over the last six years. When the Stepping Up scheme was launched, in 1996, 69 percent of the council’s employees were women, but only 13 percent of senior‐management jobs were held by women and there were no female chief officers. Today, almost 32 percent of senior‐management positions are held by women and two out of five chief officers are women. “What is more, gender equality has improved for all employees, whatever their work,” said Coral Taylor, who was appointed dedicated Stepping Up monitoring officer in 2000.

Economic Transition in China and Vietnam: Crossing the Poverty Line is Just the First Step for Women and Their Families

This paper compares the changing strategies of women and their families during the economic transition in China and Vietnam. Employment strategies to improve the family' s well-being have resulted in increased rural-urban migration by men and young women, while middle-aged, married women remain in the countryside taking care of the farms and children. Although women have been able to take advantage of new opportunities for employment in nonstate firms and their own entrepreneurial endeavors, their employment strategies are limited by increasing discrimination in hiring and layoffs. Moreover, the policy problems play out within the family in changing bargaining power, including decisions about education and health care.
