The Population of Massive Stars in Active Galactic Nuclei Disks

Gravitational instability in the outskirts of active galactic nuclei (AGN) disks leads to disk fragmentation and formation of ∼300 M ⊙ supermassive stars with potentially long lifetimes. Alternatively, stars can be captured ex situ and grow from gas accretion in the AGN disk. However, the number density distribution throughout the disk is limited by thermal feedback as their luminosities provide the dominant heating source. We derive equilibrium stellar surface density profiles under two limiting contexts: in the case where the stellar lifetimes are prolonged, due to the recycling of hydrogen-rich disk gas, only the fraction of gas converted into heat is removed from the disk accretion flow. Alternatively, if stellar composition recycling is inefficient and stars can evolve off the main sequence, the disk accretion rate is quenched toward smaller radii resembling a classical starburst disk, albeit the effective removal rate depends not only on the stellar lifetime, but also the mass of stellar remnants. For AGNs with central supermassive black hole masses of ∼106–108 M ⊙ accreting at ∼0.1 Eddington efficiency, we estimate a total number of 103–105 massive stars and the rate of stellar mergers to be 10−3 to 1 yr−1. We initiate the detailed study of the interaction between a swarm of massive stars through hydro and N-body simulations to provide better prescriptions of dynamical processes in AGN disks, and to constrain more accurate estimates of the stellar population.

Evaluation of the astrometric capability of Multi-Channel Imager and simulated calculation of proper motion of M31

Introduction: The Multi-Channel Imager (MCI), one of the back-end modules of the future China Space Station Telescope (CSST), is designed for high-precision spacebased astronomical observations. This paper evaluates the astrometric capability of the MCI based on simulated observational images and Gaia data: the M31 galaxy is selected as a representative case to validate the astrometric capability by calculating the proper motions (PMs) of the M31 member stars.Method: We analyze the stellar centroids of the simulated images in the R, I and G bands, positional uncertainty of 2.5 mas for brighter foreground reference stars from the Gaia DR3 catalog and of 7.5 mas for the fainter M31 member stars, are adopted respectively. The theoretical PMs are generated from the adopted velocity field model, rotation curve, and stellar surface density profile. And the simulated observed PMs are generated from the aforementioned position uncertainties and theoretical PMs.Result: We conclude that the precision of the MCI derived PMs strongly depends on the number of astrometric epochs per year. Specifically, uncertainty of 10 μas/yr is achievable with 10 epochs per year, and of 5 μas/yr with 50 epochs ignoring possible systematic effects. And symmetrically distributed observed fields yield better M31 kinematic parameters.Discussion: Unknown systematic errors, space environment effects on detectors, dithering strategies, and observation schedules can affect the PMs of M31, the above issues need further analysis and validation in future work.

The nature and origins of the low surface brightness outskirts of massive, central galaxies in Subaru HSC

ABSTRACT We explore the stellar mass density and colour profiles of 118 low redshift, massive, central galaxies, selected to have assembled 90 per cent of their stellar mass 6 Gyr ago, finding evidence of the minor merger activity expected to be the driver behind the size growth of quiescent galaxies. We use imaging data in the g, r, i, z, y bands from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey and perform SED fitting to construct spatially well-resolved radial profiles in colour and stellar mass surface density. Our visual morphological classification reveals that ∼42 per cent of our sample displays tidal features, similar to previous studies, ∼43 per cent of the remaining sample displays a diffuse stellar halo, and only ∼14 per cent displays no features, down to a limiting μr-band ∼ 28 mag arcsec−2. We find good agreement between the stacked colour profiles of our sample to those derived from previous studies and an expected smooth, declining stellar mass surface density profile in the central regions (< 3 Re). However, we also see a flattening of the profile (Σ* ∼ 107.5 M⊙ kpc−2) in the outskirts (up to 10 Re), which is revealed by our method of specifically targeting tidal/accretion features. We find similar levels of tidal features and behaviour in the stellar mass surface density profiles in a younger comparison sample, however, a lack of diffuse haloes. We also apply stacking techniques similar to those in previous studies, finding such procedures wash out tidal features and thereby produce smooth declining profiles. The stellar material in the outskirts contributes on average ∼1010 M⊙ or a few per cent of the total stellar mass and has similar colours to SDSS satellites of similar stellar mass.

Where Did the Outskirts Go? Outer Stellar Halos as a Sensitive Probe of Supernova Feedback

A recent comparison by Merritt of simulated and observed Milky Way–mass galaxies has identified a significant tension between the outskirts (r > 20 kpc) of the stellar halos in simulated and observed galaxies. Using observations from the Dragonfly telescope and simulated galaxies from the Illustris-TNG100 project, Merritt found that the outskirts of stellar halos in simulated galaxies have surface densities 1–2 dex higher than those of observed galaxies. In this paper, we compare two suites of 15 simulated Milky Way–like galaxies, each drawn from the same initial conditions, simulated with the same hydrodynamical code, but with two different models for feedback from supernovae. We find that the McMaster Unbiased Galaxy Simulations (MUGS), which use an older “delayed-cooling” model for feedback, also produce too much stellar mass in the outskirts of the halo, with median surface densities well above observational constraints. The MUGS2 simulations, which instead use a new, physically motivated “superbubble” model for stellar feedback, have 1–2 dex lower outer stellar halo masses and surface densities. The MUGS2 simulations generally match both the median surface density profile as well as the scatter in stellar halo surface density profiles seen in observed stellar halos. We conclude that there is no “missing outskirts” problem in cosmological simulations, provided that supernova feedback is modeled in a way that allows it to efficiently regulate star formation in the low-mass progenitor environments of stellar halo outskirts.

The outermost stellar halo of NGC 5128 (Centaurus A): Radial structure

Context.The extended stellar halos of galaxies contain important clues for investigating their assembly history and evolution.Aims.We investigate the resolved stellar content and the extended halo of NGC 5128 as a function of galactocentric distance, and trace the halo outward to its currently detectable limits.Methods.We usedHubbleSpace Telescope images obtained with the WFPC2, ACS, and WFC3 cameras equipped withF606WandF814Wfilters to resolve individual red giant branch (RGB) stars in 28 independent pointings across the halo of NGC 5128. The stellar halo analysis for 14 of these pointings is presented here for the first time. Star counts from deepVIcolor-magnitude diagrams reaching at least 1.5 mag below the tip of the RGB are used to derive the surface density distribution of the halo. The contamination by Milky Way stars is assessed with a new control field, with models, and by combining optical and near-IR photometry.Results.We present a new calibration of the WFC3F606W + F814Wphotometry to the ground-basedVIphotometric system. The photometry shows that the stellar halo of NGC 5128 is dominated by old RGB stars that are present in all fields. TheV-band surface brightness of fields changes from 23 to 32 mag arcsec−2between the innermost field only 8.3 kpc from the galaxy center to our outermost halo fields, which are located 140 kpc away from the center along the major axis and 92 kpc along the minor axis. Within the inner ∼30 kpc, we also find evidence for a 2 − 3 Gyr old population traced by asymptotic giant branch stars that are brighter than the tip of the RGB. This population contributes only up to 10% in total stellar mass if it is 2 Gyr old, but a larger fraction of 30 − 40% is required if its age is 3 Gyr. The stellar surface density profile is well fit by a classicr1/4curve or a simple power-law form ∼r−3.1over the full radial range, with no obvious break in the slope, but with large field-to-field scatter. The ellipticity measured from integrated-light photometry in the inner parts,e = (b/a) = 0.77, flattens toe = 0.54 ± 0.02 beyond 30 kpc. Considering the flattening of the outer halo, the projection of the elliptical isophote on the semimajor axis for our most distant field reaches nearly 30 effective radii.

Determining the full satellite population of a Milky Way-mass halo in a highly resolved cosmological hydrodynamic simulation

ABSTRACT We investigate the formation of the satellite galaxy population of a Milky Way-mass halo in a very highly resolved magnetohydrodynamic cosmological zoom-in simulation (baryonic mass resolution mb = 800 $\rm M_{\odot }$). We show that the properties of the central star-forming galaxy, such as the radial stellar surface density profile and star formation history, are (i) robust to stochastic variations associated with the so-called Butterfly Effect and (ii) well converged over 3.5 orders of magnitude in mass resolution. We find that there are approximately five times as many satellite galaxies at this high resolution compared to a standard ($m_b\sim 10^{4-5}\, \rm M_{\odot }$) resolution simulation of the same system. This is primarily because two-thirds of the high-resolution satellites do not form at standard resolution. A smaller fraction (one-sixth) of the satellites present at high-resolution form and disrupt at standard resolution; these objects are preferentially low-mass satellites on intermediate- to low-eccentricity orbits with impact parameters ≲30 kpc. As a result, the radial distribution of satellites becomes substantially more centrally concentrated at higher resolution, in better agreement with recent observations of satellites around Milky Way-mass haloes. Finally, we show that our galaxy formation model successfully forms ultra-faint galaxies and reproduces the stellar velocity dispersion, half-light radii, and V-band luminosities of observed Milky Way and Local Group dwarf galaxies across six orders of magnitude in luminosity (103–$10^{9}\, \rm L_{\odot }$).

APOGEE DR16: A multi-zone chemical evolution model for the Galactic disc based on MCMC methods

Context. The analysis of the latest release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment project (APOGEE DR16) data suggests the existence of a clear distinction between two sequences of disc stars at different Galactocentric distances in the [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance ratio space: the so-called high-α sequence, classically associated with an old population of stars in the thick disc with high average [α/Fe], and the low-α sequence, which mostly comprises relatively young stars in the thin disc with low average [α/Fe]. Aims. We aim to constrain a multi-zone two-infall chemical evolution model designed for regions at different Galactocentric distances using measured chemical abundances from the APOGEE DR16 sample. Methods. We performed a Bayesian analysis based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo method to fit our multi-zone two-infall chemical evolution model to the APOGEE DR16 data. Results. An inside-out formation of the Galaxy disc naturally emerges from the best fit of our two-infall chemical-evolution model to APOGEE-DR16: Inner Galactic regions are assembled on shorter timescales compared to the external ones. In the outer disc (with radii R > 6 kpc), the chemical dilution due to a late accretion event of gas with a primordial chemical composition is the main driver of the [Mg/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance pattern in the low-α sequence. In the inner disc, in the framework of the two-infall model, we confirm the presence of an enriched gas infall in the low-α phase as suggested by chemo-dynamical models. Our Bayesian analysis of the recent APOGEE DR16 data suggests a significant delay time, ranging from ∼3.0 to 4.7 Gyr, between the first and second gas infall events for all the analysed Galactocentric regions. The best fit model reproduces several observational constraints such as: (i) the present-day stellar and gas surface density profiles; (ii) the present-day abundance gradients; (iii) the star formation rate profile; and (iv) the solar abundance values. Conclusions. Our results propose a clear interpretation of the [Mg/Fe] versus [Fe/H] relations along the Galactic discs. The signatures of a delayed gas-rich merger which gives rise to a hiatus in the star formation history of the Galaxy are impressed in the [Mg/Fe] versus [Fe/H] relation, determining how the low-α stars are distributed in the abundance space at different Galactocentric distances, which is in agreement with the finding of recent chemo-dynamical simulations.

The Imprint of Spiral Arms on the Galactic Rotation Curve

Abstract We discuss a model for the Milky Way obtained by fitting the observed terminal velocities with the radial acceleration relation. The resulting stellar surface density profile departs from a smooth exponential disk, having bumps and wiggles that correspond to massive spiral arms. These features are used to estimate the term for the logarithmic density gradient in the Jeans equation, which turn out to have exactly the right location and amplitude to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between the stellar rotation curve and that of the interstellar gas. This model also predicts a gradually declining rotation curve outside the solar circle with slope , as subsequently observed.

First Results on the Cluster Galaxy Population from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam Survey. III. Brightest Cluster Galaxies, Stellar Mass Distribution, and Active Galaxies

Abstract The unprecedented depth and area surveyed by the Subaru Strategic Program with the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC-SSP) have enabled us to construct and publish the largest distant cluster sample out to to date. In this exploratory study of cluster galaxy evolution from z = 1 to z = 0.3, we investigate the stellar mass assembly history of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), the evolution of stellar mass and luminosity distributions, the stellar mass surface density profile, as well as the population of radio galaxies. Our analysis is the first high-redshift application of the top N richest cluster selection, which is shown to allow us to trace the cluster galaxy evolution faithfully. Over the 230 deg2 area of the current HSC-SSP footprint, selecting the top 100 clusters in each of the four redshift bins allows us to observe the buildup of galaxy population in descendants of clusters whose mass is about . Our stellar mass is derived from a machine-learning algorithm, which is found to be unbiased and accurate with respect to the COSMOS data. We find very mild stellar mass growth in BCGs (about 35% between z = 1 and 0.3), and no evidence for evolution in both the total stellar mass–cluster mass correlation and the shape of the stellar mass surface density profile. We also present the first measurement of the radio luminosity distribution in clusters out to , and show hints of changes in the dominant accretion mode powering the cluster radio galaxies at .

Dynamics of Dwarf Galaxies Disfavor Stellar-Mass Black Holes as Dark Matter.

We study the effects of black hole dark matter on the dynamical evolution of stars in dwarf galaxies. We find that mass segregation leads to a depletion of stars in the center of dwarf galaxies and the appearance of a ring in the projected stellar surface density profile. Using Segue 1 as an example we show that current observations of the projected surface stellar density rule out at the 99.9%confidence level the possibility that more than 6% of the dark matter is composed of black holes with a mass of few tens of solar masses.

THE IMPACT OF STELLAR FEEDBACK ON THE STRUCTURE, SIZE, AND MORPHOLOGY OF GALAXIES IN MILKY-WAY-SIZED DARK MATTER HALOS

ABSTRACT We use cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation in a Milky-Way-sized halo started from identical initial conditions to investigate the evolution of galaxy sizes, baryon fractions, morphologies, and angular momenta in runs with different parameters of the star formation–feedback cycle. Our fiducial model with a high local star formation efficiency, which results in efficient feedback, produces a realistic late-type galaxy that matches the evolution of basic properties of late-type galaxies: stellar mass, disk size, morphology dominated by a kinematically cold disk, stellar and gas surface density profiles, and specific angular momentum. We argue that feedback’s role in this success is twofold: (1) removal of low angular momentum gas, and (2) maintaining a low disk-to-halo mass fraction, which suppresses disk instabilities that lead to angular momentum redistribution and a central concentration of baryons. However, our model with a low local star formation efficiency, but large energy input per supernova, chosen to produce a galaxy with a similar star formation history as our fiducial model, leads to a highly irregular galaxy with no kinematically cold component, overly extended stellar distribution, and low angular momentum. This indicates that only when feedback is allowed to become vigorous via locally efficient star formation in dense cold gas do resulting galaxy sizes, gas/stellar surface density profiles, and stellar disk angular momenta agree with observed z = 0 galaxies.

Metallicity gradients in local field star-forming galaxies: insights on inflows, outflows, and the coevolution of gas, stars and metals

We present metallicity gradients in 49 local field star-forming galaxies. We derive gas-phase oxygen abundances using two widely adopted metallicity calibrations based on the [O iii]/Hβ, [N ii]/Hα, and [N ii]/[O ii] line ratios. The two derived metallicity gradients are usually in good agreement within |$\pm 0.14\ {\rm dex} R_{25}^{-1}$| (R25 is the B-band iso-photoal radius), but the metallicity gradients can differ significantly when the ionization parameters change systematically with radius. We investigate the metallicity gradients as a function of stellar mass (⁠|$8 {<} \log (M_\ast /M_\odot) {<} 11$|⁠) and absolute B-band luminosity (−16 > MB > −22). When the metallicity gradients are expressed in dex kpc−1, we show that galaxies with lower mass and luminosity, on average, have steeper metallicity gradients. When the metallicity gradients are expressed in |${\rm dex} R_{25}^{-1}$|⁠, we find no correlation between the metallicity gradients, and stellar mass and luminosity. We provide a local benchmark metallicity gradient of field star-forming galaxies useful for comparison with studies at high redshifts. We investigate the origin of the local benchmark gradient using simple chemical evolution models and observed gas and stellar surface density profiles in nearby field spiral galaxies. Our models suggest that the local benchmark gradient is a direct result of the coevolution of gas and stellar disc under virtually closed-box chemical evolution when the stellar-to-gas mass ratio becomes high (≫0.3). These models imply low current mass accretion rates ( ≲ 0.3 × SFR), and low-mass outflow rates ( ≲ 3 × SFR) in local field star-forming galaxies.

Multicolour CCD Photometric Study of Galactic Star Clusters SAI 63 and SAI 75

We present UBVI CCD photometric observations obtained in the field of open clusters SAI 63 and SAI 75. CCD optical data obtained for the first time for these clusters are used to derive the fundamental parameters of the clusters. Stellar surface density profile indicates that radii of SAI 63 and SAI 75 are ∼3′.5 and 2′.5 respectively. The reddenings E(B−V) are 0.44±0.05 and 0.34±0.05 mag for SAI 63 and SAI 75 respectively while the corresponding distances are 2.2 ± 0.2 and 3.5±0.3 kpc. An age of 450 ± 50 Myr for SAI 63 and 90 ± 10 Myr for SAI 75 is determined using the theoretical isochrones of Z=0.019. Our analysis shows that reddening law is normal towards SAI 75.

Towards a more realistic population of bright spiral galaxies in cosmological simulations

We present an update to the multiphase SPH galaxy formation code by Scannapieco et al. We include a more elaborate treatment of the production of metals, cooling rates based on individual element abundances, and a scheme for the turbulent diffusion of metals. Our SN feedback model now transfers energy to the ISM in kinetic and thermal form, and we include a prescription for the effects of radiation pressure from massive young stars on the ISM. We calibrate our new code on the well studied Aquarius haloes and then use it to simulate a sample of 16 galaxies with halo masses between 1x10^11 and 3x10^12 M_sun. In general, the stellar masses of the sample agree well with the stellar mass to halo mass relation inferred from abundance matching techniques for redshifts z=0-4. There is however a tendency to overproduce stars at z>4 and to underproduce them at z<0.5 in the least massive haloes. Overly high SFRs at z<1 for the most massive haloes are likely connected to the lack of AGN feedback in our model. The simulated sample also shows reasonable agreement with observed star formation rates, sizes, gas fractions and gas-phase metallicities at z=0-3. Remaining discrepancies can be connected to deviations from predictions for star formation histories from abundance matching. At z=0, the model galaxies show realistic morphologies, stellar surface density profiles, circular velocity curves and stellar metallicities, but overly flat metallicity gradients. 15 out of 16 of our galaxies contain disk components with kinematic disk fraction ranging between 15 and 65 %. The disk fraction depends on the time of the last destructive merger or misaligned infall event. Considering the remaining shortcomings of our simulations we conclude that even higher kinematic disk fractions may be possible for LambdaCDM haloes with quiet merger histories, such as the Aquarius haloes.

Galactic accretion and the outer structure of galaxies in the CDM model

We have combined the semi-analytic galaxy formation model of Guo et al. (2011) with the particle-tagging technique of Cooper et al. (2010) to predict galaxy surface brightness profiles in a representative sample of ~1900 massive dark matter haloes (10^12--10^14 M_sol) from the Millennium II Lambda-CDM N-body simulation. Here we present our method and basic results focusing on the outer regions of galaxies, consisting of stars accreted in mergers. These simulations cover scales from the stellar haloes of Milky Way-like galaxies to the 'cD envelopes' of groups and clusters, and resolve low surface brightness substructure such as tidal streams. We find that the surface density of accreted stellar mass around the central galaxies of dark matter haloes is well described by a Sersic profile, the radial scale and amplitude of which vary systematically with halo mass (M_200). The total stellar mass surface density profile breaks at the radius where accreted stars start to dominate over stars formed in the galaxy itself. This break disappears with increasing M_200 because accreted stars contribute more of the total mass of galaxies, and is less distinct when the same galaxies are averaged in bins of stellar mass, because of scatter in the relation between M_star and M_200. To test our model we have derived average stellar mass surface density profiles for massive galaxies at z~0.08 by stacking SDSS images. Our model agrees well with these stacked profiles and with other data from the literature, and makes predictions that can be more rigorously tested by future surveys that extend the analysis of the outer structure of galaxies to fainter isophotes. We conclude that it is likely that the outer structure of the spheroidal components of galaxies is largely determined by collisionless merging during their hierarchical assembly

THE SIZE-VIRIAL RADIUS RELATION OF GALAXIES

Sizes of galaxies are an important diagnostic for galaxy formation models. In this study I use the abundance matching ansatz, which has proven to be successful in reproducing galaxy clustering and other statistics, to derive estimates of the virial radius, R200, for galaxies of different morphological types and wide range of stellar mass. I show that over eight of orders of magnitude in stellar mass galaxies of all morphological types follow an approximately linear relation between 3D half-mass radius of their stellar distribution, rhalf and virial radius, rhalf~0.015R200 with a scatter of ~0.2 dex. Such scaling is in remarkable agreement with expectation of models which assume that galaxy sizes are controlled by halo angular momentum, which implies rhalf\propto lambda R200, where lambda is the spin of galaxy parent halo. The scatter about the relation is comparable with the scatter expected from the distribution of $\lambda$ and normalization of the relation agrees with that predicted by the model of Mo, Mao & White (1998), if galaxy sizes were set on average at z~1-2. Moreover, I show that when stellar and gas surface density profiles of galaxies of different morphological types are rescaled using radius r_n= 0.015 R200, the rescaled surface density profiles follow approximately universal exponential (for late types) and de Vaucouleurs (for early types) profiles with scatter of only 30-50% at R~1-3r_n. Remarkably, both late and early type galaxies have similar mean stellar surface density profiles at R>r_n. The main difference between their stellar distributions is thus at R<r_n. The results of this study imply that galaxy sizes and radial distribution of baryons are shaped primarily by properties of their parent halo and that sizes of both late type disks and early type spheroids are controlled by halo angular momentum.

An explanation for the slopes of stellar cusps in galaxy spheroids

Abstract The stellar surface mass density profiles at the centres of typical ∼ L* and lower mass spheroids exhibit power-law ‘cusps’ with Σ ∝ R−η, where 0.5 ≲ η ≲ 1 for radii ∼1–100 pc. Observations and theory support models in which these cusps are formed by dissipative gas inflows and nuclear starbursts in gas-rich mergers. At these comparatively large radii, stellar relaxation is unlikely to account for, or strongly modify, the cuspy stellar profiles. We argue that the power-law surface density profiles observed are a natural consequence of the gravitational instabilities that dominate angular momentum transport in the gravitational potential of a central massive black hole. The dominant mode at these radii is an m = 1 lopsided/eccentric disc instability, in which stars torquing the gas can drive rapid inflow and accretion. Such a mode first generically appears at large radii and propagates inwards by exciting eccentricities at smaller and smaller radii, where M*(&amp;lt; R) ≪MBH. When the stellar surface density profile is comparatively shallow with η &amp;lt; 1/2, the modes cannot efficiently propagate to R = 0 and so gas piles up and star formation steepens the profile. But if the profile is steeper than η= 1, the inward propagation of eccentricity is strongly damped, suppressing inflow and bringing η down again. Together these results produce an equilibrium slope of 1/2 ≲η≲ 1 in the potential of the central black hole. These physical arguments are supported by non-linear numerical simulations of gas inflow in galactic nuclei. Together, these results naturally explain the observed stellar density profiles of ‘cusp’ elliptical galaxies.

The structure of spiral galaxies: radial profiles in stellar mass-to-light ratio and the dark matter distribution

<i>Context. <i/>The colour and metallicity gradients observed in spiral galaxies suggest that the mass-to-light ratio (/<i>L<i/>) of the stellar disc is a function of radius. This is indeed predicted by chemo-photometric models of galactic discs.<i>Aims. <i/>We investigate the distribution of luminous and dark matter in spiral galaxies, taking into account the radial dependence of the stellar /<i>L<i/>, which is usually assumed to be constant in studies of the mass structure.<i>Methods. <i/>From earlier chemo-photometric models and in agreement with the observed radial profiles of galaxy colours, we derive the typical average /<i>L<i/> profile of the stellar discs of spiral galaxies. We computed the corresponding variable mass-to-light (VML) stellar surface density profile and then the VML disc contribution to the circular velocity. We used the latter, combined with a well-studied dark matter velocity profile, to mass model co-added rotation curves.<i>Results. <i/>By investigating rotation curves in the framework of VML stellar discs, we confirm the scenario obtained with the constant /<i>L<i/> assumption: a dark matter halo with a shallow core, an inner baryon-dominated region, and a larger proportion of dark matter in smaller objects. However, the resulting size of the the dark halo core and of the inner baryon dominance region are somewhat smaller. The stronger role that VML discs have in the innermost regions is important for constraining the galaxy mass structure in both <i>Λ<i/> Cold Dark Matter and MOND scenarios.

THE STAR FORMATION EFFICIENCY IN NEARBY GALAXIES: MEASURING WHERE GAS FORMS STARS EFFECTIVELY

We measure the star formation efficiency (SFE), the star formation rate per unit gas, in 23 nearby galaxies and compare it to expectations from proposed star formation laws and thresholds. We use HI maps from THINGS and derive H2 maps from HERACLES and BIMA SONG CO. We estimate the star formation rate by combining GALEX FUV maps and SINGS 24 micron maps, infer stellar surface density profiles from SINGS 3.6 micron data, and use kinematics from THINGS. We measure the SFE as a function of: the free-fall and orbital timescales; midplane gas pressure; stability of the gas disk to collapse (including the effects of stars); the ability of perturbations to grow despite shear; and the ability of a cold phase to form. In spirals, the SFE of H2 alone is nearly constant at 5.25 +/- 2.5 x 10^(-10) yr^(-1) (equivalent to an H2 depletion time of 1.9x10^9 yr) as a function of all of these variables at our 800 pc resolution. Where the ISM is mostly HI, on the other hand, the SFE decreases with increasing radius in both spiral and dwarf galaxies, a decline reasonably described by an exponential with scale length 0.2-0.25 r_25. We interpret this decline as a strong dependence of GMC formation on environment. The ratio of H2 to HI appears to be a smooth function of radius, stellar surface density, and pressure spanning from the H2-dominated to HI-dominated ISM. The radial decline in SFE is too steep to be reproduced only by increases in the free-fall time or orbital time. Thresholds for large-scale instability suggest that our disks are stable or marginally stable and do not show a clear link to the declining SFE. We suggest that ISM physics below the scales that we observe - phase balance in the HI, H2 formation and destruction, and stellar feedback - governs the formation of GMCs from HI.

A Multiwavelength Study of Galactic HiiRegion Sh 2‐294

We present the observational results of Galactic H II region Sh 2-294, using optical photometry, narrowband imaging, and radio continuum mapping at 1280 MHz, together with archival data from the 2MASS, MSX, and IRAS surveys. The stellar surface density profile indicates that the radius of the cluster associated with the Sh 2-294 region is ~2.3'. We estimate the minimum reddening E(B - V) = 1.35 mag and a distance of 4.8 ? 0.2 kpc to the region. The ratio of the total to the selective extinction (RV) is found to be 3.8 ? 0.1, indicates an anomalous reddening law for the dust inside the cluster region. We identified the ionizing source of the H II region, and spectral type estimates are consistent with a star of spectral type ~B0 V. The 2MASS JHKs images reveal a partially embedded cluster associated with the ionizing source along with a small cluster towards the eastern border of Sh 2-294. The radio continuum and H? images show the ionization front along the direction of the small cluster. An arc-shaped diffuse molecular hydrogen emission and a half-ring of dust emission are also seen in the direction of the ionization front at 2.12 and 8 ?m (MSX), respectively. Self-consistent radiative transfer model of mid- to far-infrared continuum emission detected near small cluster is in good agreement with the observed spectral energy distribution of a B1.5 ZAMS star. The morphological correlation between the ionized and molecular gas, along with probable timescale involved between the ionizing star, evolution of H II region, and small cluster, indicates that the star formation activity observed at the border is probably triggered by the expansion of H II region.
