Properties of the Line-of-sight Velocity Field in the Hot and X-Ray-emitting Circumgalactic Medium of Nearby Simulated Disk Galaxies

The hot, X-ray-emitting phase of the circumgalactic medium of massive galaxies is believed to be the reservoir of baryons from which gas flows onto the central galaxy and into which feedback from active galactic nuclei and stars inject mass, momentum, energy, and metals. These effects shape the velocity fields of the hot gas, which can be observed via the Doppler shifting and broadening of emission lines by X-ray integral field units. In this work, we analyze the gas kinematics of the hot circumgalactic medium of Milky Way–mass disk galaxies from the TNG50 simulation with synthetic observations to determine how future instruments can probe this velocity structure. We find that the hot phase is often characterized by outflows from the disk driven by feedback processes, radial inflows near the galactic plane, and rotation, although in some systems the velocity field is more disorganized and turbulent. With a spectral resolution of ∼1 eV, fast and hot outflows (∼200–500 km s−1) can be measured, depending on the orientation of the galaxy on the sky. The rotation velocity of the hot phase (∼100–200 km s−1) can be measured using line shifts in edge-on galaxies, and is slower than that of colder gas phases but similar to stellar rotation velocities. By contrast, the slow inflows (∼50–100 km s−1) are difficult to measure in projection with these other components, but may be detected in multicomponent spectral fits. We find that the velocity measured is sensitive to which emission lines are used. Measuring these flows will constrain theories of how the gas in these galaxies evolves.

The evolution of lithium in FGK dwarf stars

This work aims to investigate the behaviour of the lithium abundance in stars with and without detected planets. Our study is based on a sample of 1332 FGK main-sequence stars with measured lithium abundances, for 257 of which planets were detected. Our method reviews the sample statistics and is addressed specifically to the influence of tides and orbital decay, with special attention to planets on close orbits, whose stellar rotational velocity is higher than the orbital period of the planet. In this case, tidal effects are much more pronounced. The analysis also covers the orbital decay on a short timescale, with planets spiralling into their parent star. Furthermore, the sample allows us to study the relation between the presence of planets and the physical properties of their host stars, such as the chromospheric activity, metallicity, and lithium abundance. In the case of a strong tidal influence, we cannot infer from any of the studies described that the behaviour of Li differs between stars that host planets and those that do not. Our sample includes stars with super-solar metallicity ([Fe/H] > 0.15 dex) and a low lithium abundance (A(Li) < 1.0 dex). This enabled us to analyse scenarios of the origin and existence of these stars. Considering the possible explanation of the F dip, we show that it is not a plausible scenario. Our analysis is based on a kinematic study and concludes that the possible time that elapsed in the travel from their birth places in the central regions of the Galaxy to their current positions in the solar neighbourhood is not enough to explain the high lithium depletion. It is remarkable that those of our high-metallicity low-lithium stars with the greatest eccentricity (e > 0.2) are closest to the Galactic centre. A dedicated study of a set of high-metallicity low-Li stars is needed to test the migration-depletion scenario.

The Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and exoplanet transits: A delicate association at medium and low spectral resolution

The characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres via transit spectroscopy is based on the comparison between the stellar spectrum filtered through the atmosphere and the unadulterated spectrum from the occulted stellar region. The disk-integrated spectrum is often used as a proxy for the occulted spectrum, yet they differ along the transit chord depending on stellar type and rotational velocity. This is referred to as the Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, which is known to bias transmission spectra at high spectral resolution when calculated with the disk-integrated stellar spectrum. Recently, it was shown that the first claimed atmospheric signal from an exoplanet cannot arise from absorption in the core of the sodium doublet, because the features observed at high resolution are well reproduced by the RM effect. However, it remains unclear as to whether the detection made at medium spectral resolution with the HST arises from the smoothed RM signature or from the wings of the planetary absorption line. More generally, the impact of the RM effect at medium and low spectral resolution remains poorly explored. To address this question, we simulated realistic transmission spectra in a variety of systems using the EVaporating Exoplanets code. We find that the Rm effect should not bias broadband atmospheric features, such as hazes or molecular absorption, measured with the JWST/NIRSPEC (prism mode) at low resolution. However, absorption signatures from metastable helium or sodium measured at medium resolution with the JWST/NIRSPEC (G140H mode) or HST/STIS can be biased, especially for planets on misaligned orbits across fast rotators. In contrast, we show that the Na signature originally reported in HD 209458b, an aligned system, cannot be explained by the RM effect, supporting a planetary origin. Contamination by the RM effect should therefore be accounted for when interpreting high- and medium-resolution transmission spectra of exoplanets.

Deciphering dark matter: A computational analysis of stellar velocity distributions

This study examines the dark matter density in the Galaxy by fitting recent data on stellar rotational velocities. We employ a model including the disk, the bulge, and the dark matter halo. The disks density is parameterized using a modified Bessel function, and the bulge is modeled using both the De Vaucouleurs and Exponential Sphere functions to better fit large and small radii respectively. The dark halo is modeled using the generalized Navarro-Frenk-White profile, with slope parameters for standard NFW and Moore profiles, and an Isothermal profile for comparison. The fit of the model parameters is established using local Dark Matter density and total Dark Matter mass as boundary conditions, with circular velocities derived via a Newtonian approach. The least chi-square ( 2 ) method is used for rotation curve fitting. Results demonstrate successful fitting of rotational velocity data and significant influence of the DH at large radial distances from the Galactic center.

Measuring the Obliquities of the TRAPPIST-1 Planets with MAROON-X

A star’s obliquity with respect to its planetary system can provide us with insight into the system’s formation and evolution, as well as hinting at the presence of additional objects in the system. However, M dwarfs, which are the most promising targets for atmospheric follow-up, are underrepresented in terms of obliquity characterization surveys due to the challenges associated with making precise measurements. In this paper, we use the extreme-precision radial velocity (RV) spectrograph MAROON-X to measure the obliquity of the late M dwarf TRAPPIST-1. With the Rossiter–McLaughlin effect, we measure a system obliquity of and a stellar rotational velocity of 2.1 ± 0.3 km s−1. We were unable to detect stellar surface differential rotation, and we found that a model in which all planets share the same obliquity was favored by our data. We were also unable to make a detection of the signatures of the planets using Doppler tomography, which is likely a result of the both the slow rotation of the star and the low signal-to-noise ratio of the data. Overall, TRAPPIST-1 appears to have a low obliquity, which could imply that the system has a low primordial obliquity. It also appears to be a slow rotator, which is consistent with past characterizations of the system and estimates of the star’s rotation period. The MAROON-X data allow for a precise measurement of the stellar obliquity through the Rossiter–McLaughlin effect, highlighting the capabilities of MAROON-X and its ability to make high-precision RV measurements around late, dim stars.

The initial spin distribution of B-type stars revealed by the split main sequences of young star clusters

Spectroscopic observations of stars in young open clusters have revealed evidence for a dichotomous distribution of stellar rotational velocities, with 10−30% of stars rotating slowly and the remaining 70−90% rotating fairly rapidly. At the same time, high-precision multiband photometry of young star clusters shows a split main sequence band, which is again interpreted as due to a spin dichotomy. Recent papers suggest that extreme rotation is required to retrieve the photometric split. Our new grids of MESA models and the prevalent SYCLIST models show, however, that initial slow (0−35% of the linear Keplerian rotation velocities) and intermediate (50−65% of the Keplerian rotation velocities) rotation are adequate to explain the photometric split. These values are consistent with the recent spectroscopic measurements of cluster and field stars, and are likely to reflect the birth spin distributions of upper main-sequence stars. A fraction of the initially faster-rotating stars may be able to reach near-critical rotation at the end of their main-sequence evolution and produce Be stars in the turn-off region of young star clusters. However, we find that the presence of Be stars up to two magnitudes below the cluster turnoff advocates for a crucial role of binary interaction in creating Be stars. We argue that surface chemical composition measurements may help distinguish these two Be star formation channels. While only the most rapidly rotating, and therefore nitrogen-enriched, single stars can evolve into Be stars, slow pre-mass-transfer rotation and inefficient accretion allows for mild or no enrichment even in critically rotating accretion-induced Be stars. Our results shed new light on the origin of the spin distribution of young and evolved B-type main sequence stars.

The Orbital Architecture of Qatar-6: A Fully Aligned Three-body System?

The evolutionary history of an extrasolar system is, in part, fossilized through its planets’ orbital orientations relative to the host star’s spin axis. However, spin–orbit constraints for warm Jupiters—particularly in binary star systems, which are amenable to a wide range of dynamical processes—are relatively scarce. We report a measurement of the Rossiter–McLaughlin effect, observed with the Keck/HIRES spectrograph, across the transit of Qatar-6 A b—a warm Jupiter orbiting one star within a binary system. From this measurement, we obtain a sky-projected spin–orbit angle λ = 0.°1 ± 2.°6. Combining this new constraint with the stellar rotational velocity of Qatar-6 A that we measure from TESS photometry, we derive a true obliquity —consistent with near-exact alignment. We also leverage astrometric data from Gaia DR3 to show that the Qatar-6 binary star system is edge-on (), such that the stellar binary and the transiting exoplanet orbit exhibit line-of-sight orbit–orbit alignment. Ultimately, we demonstrate that all current constraints for the three-body Qatar-6 system are consistent with both spin–orbit and orbit–orbit alignment. High-precision measurements of the projected stellar spin rate of the host star and the sky-plane geometry of the transit relative to the binary plane are required to conclusively verify the full 3D configuration of the system.

The impact of spurious collisional heating on the morphological evolution of simulated galactic discs

ABSTRACT We use a suite of idealized N-body simulations to study the impact of spurious heating of star particles by dark matter (DM) particles on the kinematics and morphology of simulated galactic discs. We find that spurious collisional heating leads to a systematic increase of the azimuthal velocity dispersion (σϕ) of stellar particles and a corresponding decrease in their mean azimuthal velocities ($\overline{v}_\phi$). The rate of heating is dictated primarily by the number of DM halo particles (or equivalently, by the DM particle mass at fixed halo mass) and by radial gradients in the local DM density along the disc; it is largely insensitive to the stellar particle mass. Galaxies within haloes resolved with fewer than ≈106 DM particles are particularly susceptible to spurious morphological evolution, irrespective of the total halo mass (with even more particles required to prevent heating of the galactic centre). Collisional heating transforms galactic discs from flattened structures into rounder spheroidal systems, causing them to lose rotational support in the process. It also affects the locations of galaxies in standard scaling relations that link their various properties: at fixed stellar mass, it increases the sizes of galaxies, and reduces their mean stellar rotation velocities and specific angular momenta. Our results urge caution when extrapolating simulated galaxy scaling relations to low masses where spurious collisional effects can bias their normalization, slope, and scatter.

Probing Galactic variations in the fine-structure constant using solar twin stars: Systematic errors

ABSTRACT Sun-like stars are a new probe of variations in the fine-structure constant, α, via the solar twins approach: velocity separations of close pairs of absorption lines are compared between stars with very similar stellar parameters, i.e. effective temperature, metallicity, and surface gravity within 100 K, 0.1 dex, and 0.2 dex of the Sun’s values. Here, we assess possible systematic errors in this approach by analysing ≳10 000 archival exposures from the High-Accuracy Radial Velocity Planetary Searcher (HARPS) of 130 stars covering a much broader range of stellar parameters. We find that each transition pair’s separation shows broad, low-order variations with stellar parameters that can be accurately modelled, leaving only a small residual, intrinsic star-to-star scatter of 0–33 m s−1 (average ≈7 m s−1, ≈1 × 10−4 Å at 5000 Å). This limits the precision available from a single pair in a single star. We consider potential systematic errors from a range of instrumental and astrophysical sources (e.g. wavelength calibration, charge transfer inefficiency, stellar magnetic activity, line blending) and conclude that variations in elemental abundances, isotope ratios, and stellar rotational velocities may explain this star-to-star scatter. Finally, we find that the solar twins approach can be extended to solar analogues – within 300 K, 0.3 dex, and 0.4 dex of the Sun’s parameters – without significant additional systematic errors, allowing a much larger number of stars to be used as probes of variation in α, including at much larger distances.

Generalized statistical mechanics of stellar systems.

The observed distributions of stellar parameters, in particular, rotational and radial velocities, often depart from the Maxwellian (Gaussian) distribution. In the absence of a consistent statistical framework, these distributions are, in general, accounted for phenomenologically by employing power-law distributions, such as Tsallis or Kaniadakis distributions. Here we argue that the observed distributions correspond to locally Gaussian distributions, whose characteristic width is regarded as a statistical variable, in accordance with common knowledge that this parameter is mass dependent. The distributions arising within this picture correspond to superstatistics-a formalism emerging naturally in the context of self-gravitating media. We discuss in detail the distributions arising within this formalism and confront them with observational data of open clusters. We compute their moments and show that the Chandrasekhar-Münch relation remains invariant in this scenario. We also address the effect of these distributions on the thermalization of a massive body, e.g., a supermassive black hole, immersed in a stellar gas. We further discuss how the superstatistical picture clarifies certain ambiguities while offering a whole family of distributions (of which asymptotic power laws represent a special case), opening possibilities for fitting observational data.

Projected Rotational Velocities and Fundamental Properties of Low-mass Pre-main-sequence Stars in the Taurus–Auriga Star-forming Region

Abstract The projected stellar rotational velocity ( ) is critical for our understanding of processes related to the evolution of angular momentum in pre-main-sequence stars. We present measurements of high-resolution infrared and optical spectroscopy for 70 pre-main-sequence stars in the Taurus–Auriga star-forming region, in addition to effective temperatures measured from line-depth ratios, as well as stellar rotation periods determined from optical photometry. From the literature, we identified the stars in our sample that show evidence of residing in circumstellar disks or multiple systems. The comparison of infrared measurements calculated using two techniques shows a residual scatter of ∼1.8 km s−1, defining a typical error floor for the of pre-main-sequence stars from infrared spectra. A comparison of the distributions of stars with and without companions shows that binaries/multiples typically have a higher measured , which may be caused by contamination by companion lines, shorter disk lifetimes in binary systems, or tidal interactions in hierarchical triples. A comparison of optical and infrared values shows no significant difference regardless of whether the star has a disk or not, indicating that CO contamination from the disk does not impact measurements above the typical ∼1.8 km s−1 error floor of our measurements. Finally, we observe a lack of a correlation between the , presence of a disk, and H-R diagram position, which indicates a complex interplay between stellar rotation and evolution of pre-main-sequence stars.

The influence of planetary engulfment on stellar rotation in metal-poor main-sequence stars

Context. The method of gyrochronology relates the age of its star to its rotation period. However, recent evidence of deviations from gyrochronology relations has been reported in the literature. Aims. We study the influence of tidal interaction between a star and its companion on the rotation velocity of the star to explain peculiar stellar rotation velocities. Methods. We followed the interaction of a star and its planet using a comprehensive numerical framework that combines tidal friction, magnetic braking, planet migration, and detailed stellar evolution models from the GARSTEC grid. We focus on close-in companions from 1 to 20 MJup orbiting low-mass (0.8 − 1 M⊙) main-sequence stars with a broad metallicity of [Fe/H] = − 1 up to solar. Results. Our simulations suggest that the dynamical interaction between a star and its companion can have different outcomes that depend on the initial semi-major axis and the mass of the planet, as well as on the mass and metallicity of its host star. In most cases, especially in the case of planet engulfment, we find a catastrophic increase in stellar rotation velocity from 1 kms−1 to over 40 kms−1 while the star is still on the main-sequence. The main prediction of our model is that low-mass main-sequence stars with abnormal rotation velocities should be more common at low-metallicity, as lower [Fe/H] favours faster planet engulfment, based on the assumption that the occurrence rate of close-in massive planets is similar at all metallicities. Conclusions. Our scenario explains peculiar rotation velocities of low-mass main-sequence stars by the tidal interaction between the star and its companion. Current observational samples are too narrow and incomplete, and, thus, they are not sufficient for our model to be tested.

The spin-orbit alignment of visual binaries

Context. The angle between the stellar spin-axis and the orbital plane of a stellar or planetary companion has important implications for the formation and evolution of such systems. A study by Hale (1994, AJ, 107, 306) found that binaries with separations a ≲ 30 au are preferentially aligned while binaries on wider orbits are frequently misaligned. Aims. We aim to test the robustness of the Hale study results by reanalysing the sample of visual binaries with measured rotation periods using independently derived stellar parameters and a Bayesian formalism. Methods. Our analysis is based on a combination of data from the Hale study and newly obtained spectroscopic data from the Hertzsprung SONG telescope, combined with astrometric data from Gaia DR2 and the Washington Double Star Catalog. We combine measurements of stellar radii and rotation periods to obtain stellar rotational velocities v. Rotational velocities v are combined with measurements of projected rotational velocities v sin i to derive posterior probability distributions of stellar inclination angles i. We determine line-of-sight projected spin-orbit angles by comparing stellar inclination angles with astrometric orbital inclination angles. Results. We find that the precision of the available data is insufficient to make inferences about the spin-orbit alignment of visual binaries. The data are equally compatible with alignment and misalignment at all orbital separations. Conclusions. We conclude that the previously reported trend that binaries with separations a ≲ 30 au are preferentially aligned is spurious. The spin-orbit alignment distribution of visual binaries is unconstrained. Based on simulated observations, we predict that it will be difficult to reach the sufficient precision in v sin i, rotation periods, and orbital inclination required to make robust statistical inferences about the spin-orbit alignment of visual binaries.

On the angular momentum history of galactic discs

ABSTRACT The stellar mass, size, and rotational velocity of galactic discs all grow from redshift ∼2 to the present by amounts that are estimated from observationally derived scaling relations. The product of these three quantities, the angular momentum of stellar discs, is then estimated to grow by a remarkably large factor, between ∼20 and ∼50, whereas other evidences suggest a more moderate increase. This requires that the specific angular momentum of the accreted gas should systematically increase with time while remaining corotational with the disc over most of the last ∼10 Gyr. Thus, the baryonic gas vorticity of the circumgalactic medium appears to emerge as a major driver in galaxy evolution, and this Letter is meant to attract attention on the sheer size of the angular momentum increase and on the need to explore to which extent this can be observed in nature and/or in simulations.

MUSE Observations of NGC330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud: Helium Abundance of Bright Main-sequence Stars*

Abstract We present observations of the most bright main-sequence stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud stellar cluster NGC 330 obtained with the integral-field spectrograph, the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, at the Very Large Telescope. The use of this valuable instrument allows us to study both photometric and spectroscopic properties of stellar populations of this young star cluster. The photometric data provide us a precise color–magnitude diagram, which seems to support the presence of two stellar populations of ages of ≈18 Myr and ≈30 Myr assuming a metallicity of Z = 0.002. Thanks to the spectroscopic data, we derive a helium abundance of 10 main-sequence stars within the effective radius of R eff = 20″ of NGC 330, thus leading to an estimation of = 10.93 ± 0.05(1σ). The helium elemental abundances of stars likely belonging to the two possible stellar populations do not show differences or dichotomy within the uncertainties. Thus, our results suggest that the two stellar populations of NGC 330, if they exist, share similar original He abundances. If we consider stellar rotation velocity in our analysis, a coeval (30 Myr) stellar population, experiencing different values of rotation, cannot be excluded. In this case, the mean helium abundance obtained in our analysis is 11.00 ± 0.05 dex. We also verified that possible non-LTE (NLTE) effects cannot be identified with our analysis because of the spectral resolution and they are within our derived abundance He uncertainties. Moreover, the analysis of the He abundance as a function of the distance from the cluster center of the observed stars does not show any correlation.

NIHAO-UHD: The properties of MW-like stellar disks in high resolution cosmological simulations

Abstract Simulating thin and extended galactic disks has long been a challenge in computational astrophysics. We introduce the NIHAO-UHD suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way mass galaxies and study stellar disk properties such as stellar mass, size and rotation velocity which agree well with observations of the Milky Way and local galaxies. In particular, the simulations reproduce the age-velocity dispersion relation and a multi-component stellar disk as observed for the Milky Way. Half of our galaxies show a double exponential vertical profile, while the others are well described by a single exponential model which we link to the disk merger history. In all cases, mono-age populations follow a single exponential whose scale height varies monotonically with stellar age and radius. The scale length decreases with stellar age while the scale height increases. The general structure of the stellar disks is already set at time of birth as a result of the inside-out and upside-down formation. Subsequent evolution modifies this structure by increasing both the scale length and height of all mono-age populations. Thus, our results put tight constraints on how much dynamical memory stellar disks can retain over cosmological timescales. Our simulations demonstrate that it is possible to form thin galactic disks in cosmological simulations provided there are no significant stellar mergers at low redshifts. Most of the stellar mass is formed in-situ with only a few percent ($\lesssim 5\%$) brought in by merging satellites at early times. Redshift zero snapshots and halo catalogues are publicly available.

Photospheric nitrogen abundances and carbon 12C/13C ratios of red giant stars

Abstract Nitrogen abundances and carbon isotope ratios (12C$/$13C) in the atmospheres of red giants are known to be influenced by dredge-up of H-burning products, and serve as useful probes to study the nature of evolution-induced envelope mixing. We determined the [N/Fe] and 12C$/$13C ratios for 239 late-G/early-K giant stars by applying the spectrum-fitting technique to the 12CN and 13CN lines in the ∼8002–8005 Å region, with the aim of investigating how these quantities are related to other similar mixing-affected indicators which were already reported in our previous work. It was confirmed that [N/Fe] values are generally supersolar (typically by several tenths of a dex, though widely differing from star to star), anti-correlated with [C/Fe], and correlated with [Na/Fe], as expected from theory. As seen from their dependence upon stellar parameters, it appears that mixing tends to be enhanced with an increase of stellar luminosity (or mass) and rotational velocity, which is also reasonable from the theoretical viewpoint. In contrast, the resulting 12C$/$13C ratios turned out to be considerably diversified in the range of ∼5–50 (with a peak around ∼20), without showing any systematic dependence upon C or N abundance anomalies caused by the mixing of CN-cycled material. It thus appears that our understanding of the photospheric 12C$/$13C ratios in red giants is still incomplete, requiring more observational studies.

Tidal-locking-induced Stellar Rotation Dichotomy in the Open Cluster NGC 2287?

Abstract Stars spend most of their lifetimes on the “main sequence” (MS) in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. The obvious double MSs seen in the equivalent color–magnitude diagrams characteristic of Milky Way open clusters (OCs) pose a fundamental challenge to our traditional understanding of star clusters as “single stellar populations.” The clear MS bifurcation of early-type stars with masses greater than ∼1.6 M ⊙ is thought to result from a range in the stellar rotation rates. However, direct evidence connecting double MSs to stellar rotation properties has yet to emerge. Here, we show through analysis of the projected stellar rotational velocities (v sin i, where i represents the star’s inclination angle) that the well-separated double MS in the young, ∼200 Myr old Milky Way OC NGC 2287 is tightly correlated with a dichotomous distribution of stellar rotation rates. We discuss whether our observations may reflect the effects of tidal locking affecting a fraction of the cluster’s member stars in stellar binary systems. We show that the slow rotators could potentially be initially rapidly rotating stars that have been slowed down by tidal locking by a low-mass-ratio companion in a cluster containing a large fraction of short-period, low-mass-ratio binaries. This demonstrates that stellar rotation drives the split MSs in young, ⪅300 Myr old star clusters. However, special conditions, e.g., as regards the mass-ratio distribution, might be required for this scenario to hold.

Radial acceleration relation from ultra-light scalar dark matter

We show that ultra-light scalar dark matter (fuzzy dark matter) in galaxies has a quantum mechanical typical acceleration scale about 10−10ms−2, which leads to the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. Baryonic matter at central parts of galaxies acts as a boundary condition for dark matter wave equation and influences stellar rotation velocities in halos. Without any modification of gravity or mechanics this model also explains the radial acceleration relation and MOND-like behavior of gravitational acceleration found in galaxies having flat rotation curves. This analysis can be extended to the Faber-Jackson relation.

A census of massive stars in NGC 346

Spectroscopy for 247 stars towards the young cluster NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud has been combined with that for 116 targets from the VLT-FLAMES Survey of Massive Stars. Spectral classification yields a sample of 47 O-type and 287 B-type spectra, while radial-velocity variations and/or spectral multiplicity have been used to identify 45 candidate single-lined (SB1) systems, 17 double-lined (SB2) systems, and one triple-lined (SB3) system. Atmospheric parameters (Teff and log g) and projected rotational velocities (ve sin i) have been estimated using TLUSTY model atmospheres; independent estimates of ve sin i were also obtained using a Fourier Transform method. Luminosities have been inferred from stellar apparent magnitudes and used in conjunction with the Teff and ve sin i estimates to constrain stellar masses and ages using the BONNSAI package. We find that targets towards the inner region of NGC 346 have higher median masses and projected rotational velocities, together with smaller median ages than the rest of the sample. There appears to be a population of very young targets with ages of less than 2 Myr, which have presumably all formed within the cluster. The more massive targets are found to have lower projected rotational velocities consistent with previous studies. No significant evidence is found for differences with metallicity in the stellar rotational velocities of early-type stars, although the targets in the Small Magellanic Cloud may rotate faster than those in young Galactic clusters. The rotational velocity distribution for single non-supergiant B-type stars is inferred and implies that a significant number have low rotational velocity (≃10% with ve < 40 km s−1), together with a peak in the probability distribution at ve≃ 300 km s−1. Larger projected rotational velocity estimates have been found for our Be-type sample and imply that most have rotational velocities between 200–450 km s−1.
