Investigation of the Impact of SSSC-Based FLC on the Stability of Power Systems Connected to Wind Farms

The integration of renewable energy sources into power systems has increased significantly in recent years. Among various types of renewable energy, the use of wind energy is growing rapidly due to its low operating cost, wide distribution worldwide, and no greenhouse gas emissions. However, power systems integrated with wind energy may face stability and reliability issues due to the intermittent nature of wind power. Therefore, in power systems connected to wind farms, it is usually required to use some compensators such as static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to increase the system performance under abnormal conditions. On the other hand, for an SSSC to be effective in improving the system performance, it must be equipped with a suitable controller. In this paper, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is used for the SSSC because of its advantages over conventional controllers. Extensive research has been conducted in power systems with wind turbines in which SSSC or FLC has been used; however, their simultaneous application in such systems has received less attention. Therefore, this article aims to fill this gap. The proposed method is implemented on two power systems and the simulation results are analyzed. In both systems, the dynamic behavior of three different wind farms is examined. In the first and second wind farms, either a squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) or doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) are used, whereas in the third one which is a combined wind farm (CWF), an equal number of SCIG and DFIG are employed. In wind farms with SCIG or DFIG, an SSSC is also utilized. Furthermore, an FLC is employed for the SSSC to improve its efficacy. A proportional integral (PI) controller is also considered for the SSSC, and its results are compared with FLC results. The simulation results confirm the superiority of FLC over PI controller.

Coordination of PSS and Multiple FACTS-POD to Improve Stability and Operation Economy of Wind-thermal-bundled Power System

Aims and Background: Focusing on the low-frequency oscillation and system power loss problem in wind-thermal-bundled (WTB) transmission systems and the interaction problem due to different controllers, this study aimed to improve the low-frequency oscillation characteristics of WTB transmission system while ensuring the economy of operation and suppressing the adverse interaction between controllers. Methods: For this purpose, a coordination and optimization strategy for a power system stabilizer (PSS), static synchronous series compensator with additional power oscillation damping controller (SSSC-POD), and static synchronous compensator with additional power oscillation damping controller (STATCOM-POD) is proposed based on multi-objective salp swarm algorithm (MSSA). The controller regulation characteristics are taken into account in the coordination method. Results: Several designed scenarios, including changing the transmission power of the tie line and increasing wind power output, are considered in the IEEE 4-machine 2-area to test the proposed method. The power flow analysis, characteristic root analysis, and time-domain simulation are used to analyze the simulation results. Conclusion: Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively suppress the low-frequency oscillation of the WTB system while reducing its net loss. The application in engineering issues for MSSA is supplemented.

Modeling and Simulation of Static Synchronous Series Compensator and It’s Applications in IEEE 14-Bus System

The growing demand for electricity has been a main reason for many blackouts. The way we transmit electricity now can't support the high need for power. This is making the voltage, which is like the electric pressure, unstable, which results in a big problem when managing the power grid. So, it's really important to understand how much load, or demand, the system can handle without getting messed up. Stability is a key concept, especially voltage stability. This means the power system's ability to keep the voltage at good levels at all points, both when things are normal and when there are problems or malfunctions. The unstable voltage happens because of higher demand for power, changes in the way the system works, and when the voltage drops in overloaded power grids. Checking voltage stability is a basic way to figure out if a system is safe. In order to make the system healthy there is a need of a series FACTS device to maintain certain power and voltage profile even though it’s subjected to practical disturbances.

Super capacitor and SSSC-based coordinated strategy for performance improvement of diverse source interconnected power system

In this work, the dynamical behavior of the dual area thermal-hydro-wind (DATHW) model of the interconnected power system (IPS) is investigated. For analysis, the area-1 of the DATHW system is laid with a disturbance in step load (SLD) of 10%. The investigation is carried out on the DATHW system under the supervision of the fractional order proportional-integral-derivative-filter (FOPIDN) controller optimized with the water cycle algorithm (WCA). However, the dominance of FOPIDN in regulating the DATHW system performance deviations is validated by other regulators. To get the research near practicality, the DATHW system is deliberated with communication time delays (CTDs). The CTDs is the inherit nature of the communication peripherals that are employed in the IPS network for providing the data exchange among various devices. Further, the supplementary control approach of super capacitors (SC) and static synchronous series compensators (SSSC) is adopted with the DATHW system for performance improvement. The supplementary control is implemented by integrating the SC in the control areas and the SSSC with the tie-line. Finally, we conducted the sensitivity test to reveal the efficacy of the suggested controller mechanism in this work.

Assessment of photovoltaic generation penetration effect on the maximum loadability of the system

This paper proposed a method to investigate the effect of increasing PV penetration on the voltage stability of an IEEE 14-bus test system considering maximum PV penetration and system loadability limit. The critical bus of the test system has been decided based on nose curve analysis. The solar PV system is deployed with the most critical bus of the system. The effect of increasing PV penetration on the improvement in the loading capacity of various power system components like transmission lines, transmission line transformers, and generators is investigated over the adopted test system. Based on solar PV penetration up to 100 MW, the maximum loadability limit of the IEEE 14-bus test system increases, as shown by the results. Bus 14 is found to be the most severe bus of the test system using the continuation power flow (CPF) method. However, in some cases, overloading situations develop after a certain limit of PV penetration in the power system. In this condition, the overloading of the power system equipment is improved by the use of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) at bus number 14, a double circuit line in the critical line (9–14), and Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) in the most severe line (9–14) in the system. The maximum loadability of the system gets maximum enhanced from 4.0349 p.u. to 4.5602 p.u. under simultaneous use of solar PV generation, SSSC, and STATCOM at the most critical bus and in most severe line of the system. As evidence, the enhancement in maximum loadability of the system found using the proposed method has been also compared with the existing research. The maximum system loadability has been also enhanced under normal and (N-1) contingency conditions by the use of PV penetration in the system. PSAT/MATLAB software is used for simulation and maximum loadability has been investigated by continuation power flow (CPF) method.

The Design and Dynamic Control of a Unified Power Flow Controller with a Novel Algorithm for Obtaining the Least Harmonic Distortion

This study investigates the control and dynamic operation of the Unified Power Flow Controller made of shunt and series converters, a Static Synchronous Compensator, and a Static Synchronous Series Compensator, respectively, connected back-to-back through a common DC-link capacitor. The model of a 48-pulse Voltage Source Converter is constructed from a three-level Neutral Point Clamped converter, which allows the total harmonic distortion to be reduced. An optimal conduction angle tracking system of the three-level inverter is designed to minimize distortion by detecting proper harmonic component elimination. Starting from the six-step modulation strategy, the dq decoupled control schemes of both compensators in open and closed loops are presented. Finally, the MATLAB-Simulink model of the power flow controller is implemented and analyzed. The results show that the controller can track the power changes and apply a suitable voltage to the power system so that the power flow can be controlled. This way, the power flow controller dynamically improves the voltage and power quality across the power network while simultaneously improving the transient stability of the system. It can eliminate all system disturbances resulting from oscillations and harmonics in voltage and current within a very short time. The procedural approach used to model and simulate the Unified Power Flow Controller, as well as the new algorithm used to obtain the harmonic number that minimizes the total harmonic distortion, can be applied to any AC power system.

Enhancing the transient stability of interconnected power systems by designing an adaptive fuzzy-based fractional order PID controller

The reliable and efficient operation of the electrical energy transmission system heavily relies on maintaining stability as a key requirement. Interconnected power systems often experience low-frequency oscillations (LFOs), which have the potential to initiate instability and, subsequently, necessitate careful attention and investigation. To tackle this issue, researchers have focused on various controllers, including Fractional-Order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (FOPID) controllers. The FOPID controller, with its increased number of design parameters, has proven to be more successful than the traditional PID controller in various engineering applications. However, determining the optimal parameters for the controller becomes more challenging due to the increased design space. Moreover, the performance of fixed-gain FOPID controllers may be degraded when confronted with highly nonlinear and uncertain controlled objects such as power systems. This issue is primarily attributed to the static nature of fixed-gain FOPID controllers. To overcome these challenges associated with fixed-gain FOPID controllers and to instill an adaptive quality, this article introduces a novel power system control methodology. This adaptive approach combines a FOPID control strategy with a fuzzy logic system and is denoted as EOA-AFFOPID. The proposed adaptive controller dynamically tunes its coefficients through a fuzzy block, which significantly improves the overall performance of the control system. To establish a performance benchmark, we have also created an alternative controller, named EOA-FOPID, a version of the optima FOPID controller with fixed coefficients. The proposed methodology is applied to multi-machine interconnected power systems equipped with Static Synchronous Series Compensators (SSSCs), and comparative evaluations are conducted with other popular recent control strategies. The comparisons demonstrate the effectiveness of the EOA-AFFOPID control strategy in damping system fluctuations and achieving significant performance improvements in terms of different metrics including overshoot, undershoot, and settling time.

Supplementary damping controller design for FACTS devices using the Fuzzy Elman Wavelet Neural Network

AbstractThe occurrence of inter‐area oscillations in a power system is challenging to prevent. Thus, it is imperative to dampen inter‐area oscillations due to their potential to cause various instability problems. In this study, the Fuzzy Elman Wavelet Neural Network (FEWNN) was created as a novel neuro‐fuzzy network that combines the beneficial features of the Wavelet Neural Network (WNN), Takagi‐Sugeno‐Kang (TSK) fuzzy model, and cross‐coupled feedbacks inspired by the Elman Neural Network (ENN). Compared to alternative fuzzy wavelet networks, the representations of high‐order nonlinear dynamic systems in the proposed novel FEWNN are more effective, the training speed and computational power are greater, and interval type‐2 fuzzy membership functions are able to manage uncertainties in the power system. This paper uses FEWNN to develop a novel method for damping inter‐area oscillations caused by flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) employing a supplementary damping controller (SDC) based on direct adaptive control theory (DACT). The proposed SDC is integrated into a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) in a two‐machine two‐area power system and Kundor's four‐machine two‐area power system, as well as a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) in Kundor's four‐machine two‐area power system. In conclusion, the damping power of the system is compared to that of other SDCs presented in recent studies. The MATLAB/SIMULINK environment was used to conduct all simulations for this work.

Robust design and best control channel selection of FACTs-based WADC for improving power system stability using Grey Wolf Optimizer

With recent advances in wide-area measurement systems (WAMS), wide-area damping controllers (WADCs) based on remote signals can effectively damp inter-area oscillations. However, these signals are inherently subjected to communication time-delay which may adversely affect the damping of inter area oscillations. The purpose of this paper is to present a optimization-based method for designing a WADC for a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to improve the damping of inter-area oscillations by considering the time delays of remote control signals. For this aim, the control gain value of the WADC, shifting of the critical modes to a desirable area, and the maximum time delay margins are simultaneously considered as an objective function. Moreover, to design a WADC as minimum-phase structure, the suitable constraints have been determined and added to the objective function as penalty factors. A grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm is utilized to solve the optimization problem. Robustness of the designed SSSC-based WADC in amplitude and phase control channels against the time delay has been compared and then the best control channels to damp inter-area oscillations has been selected. Based on simulations and statistical results conducted on 4 and 50 machine multi-machine power systems, it is evident that the proposed method based on the GWO outperforms other techniques in achieving the optimal design of a SSSC-based WADC for damping inter-area oscillations.

A SSSC optimal configuration method to enhance available transfer capability considering multi‐wind farm access

AbstractIn the context of electricity market, the heavy load of some inter‐provincial and intra‐provincial lines limits available transfer capability (ATC). As a series compensation device, static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) can reallocate the power flow of adjacent lines. In order to maximize the inter‐regional ATC, a two‐stage optimal SSSC allocation method considering the uncertainty and correlation of multi‐wind farm is proposed. Firstly, the initial wind power scenarios are generated based on latin hypercube sampling (LHS) and reduced by the improved iterative self‐organizing data analysis techniques algorithm (I‐ISODATA). Then, a multi‐objective optimization model is constructed with the maximum expected power flow transfer entropy (PFTE) and minimum expected SSSC investment cost in all typical wind power scenarios, and non‐dominated sorting genetic algorithm‐II (NSGA‐II) method is used to determine the location of SSSC. In addition, based on the reduced wind power scenarios, the ATC calculation model containing SSSC is constructed, and the modern interior point method is used to determine the control parameters and configuration capacity of SSSC. Finally, based on the improved IEEE39 and IEEE118 node systems, case study proves that the proposed model can determine the optimal SSSC configuration scheme and significantly improves the ATC.

Comparative evaluation by two different hybrid power flow controller topologies of transient stability of machine system connected to wind-PV sources

The Hybrid Power Flow Controller (HPFC) has a simple design configuration, where the upgrading of the line functionality and controller can be performed in stages. This paper applies two HPFC configurations to a multi-machine power network. The first HPFC is a combination of two static synchronous series compensators (SSSC) connected in series, and a Static Var compensator (SVC). The second one consists of two shunt Static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) connected through a Thyristor controlled series compensator (TCSC), across a coupling transformer in a common DC link. The HPFC topologies are tested with a multi-machine power network with faults, in the presence of solar and wind energy sources. The overall model is simulated using SimPowerSystems toolbox and the performance of the two HPFC topologies is compared under various operating conditions. The comparison of simulation results shows that the second HPFC gives a better view than the first in analyzing the power system transient stability.

Enhancement of Power System Security by the Intelligent Control of a Static Synchronous Series Compensator

Improving and maintaining the stability of a power system is a major focus of modern technology and research. However, due to financial issues, environmental concerns, and health risks associated with electric and magnetic fields, the growth of the current transmission system is constrained. Transmission line problems can be resolved by the effective use of reactive power compensation based on Flexible AC Transmission (FACT) devices. The effectiveness of these devices in regulating active and reactive powers as well as dampening oscillations in the transient phase of the power system is examined using a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) control. When compared to the traditional Proportional Integral (PI) controller, the suggested ANN controller offers better dynamic performance. For the suggested test system, this study utilized modeling and simulation using the MATLAB/Simulink software. The observations show that by using ANN in disturbed situations, power oscillations are quickly damped and power flow is enhanced.

FUZZY LOGIC CONTROLLED STATCOM WITH A SERIES COMPENSATED TRANSMISSION LINE ANALYSIS

The integration of wind farms with transmission networks exhibits several problems. The sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) plays a vital role in those issues, and it must be reduced. Two effective flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) based voltage control devices, namely static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) and static compensator (STATCOM) are proposed in this paper to mitigate the SSR. Detailed eigenvalue analysis was conducted to prove the successful mitigation of SSR by two controllers in a series of compensated wind farms. To find the dominant control scheme, the eigenvalues of the proposed controllers are compared with PSCAD/EMTDC simulations. Finally, a comparison study is carried out between the two proposed SSR controllers.Further, the fuzzy logic control based on STATCOM and SSSC is also developed to enhance the stability margin of the wind turbine. The results have been validated with the IEEE 1st SSR benchmark system. From the results, it is proven that Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) based SSSC exhibits better performance than STATCOM.

Optimal fractional SSSC auxiliary controller for power system low frequency oscillations damping improvement

This work presents a new controller design to improve inter-area low frequency electromechanical oscillations (LFEOs) damping and enhance the overall stability of the electrical network. The control strategy used the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) based flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) series-type device mainly performed for power flow and voltage regulation. Then, a fractional order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) is introduced as an auxiliary controller for the SSSC using the difference of rotor speed deviations of generators as input signal to improve the oscillations damping. Moreover, genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to seek for optimum controller gains. The proposed control approach is examined on two-area four-machine (2A4M) test system. The FOPID performance is compared with the integer order proportional integral derivative (PID). Obtained results show that the proposed SSSC-based FOPID controller achieves high performance for enhancement of inter-area low frequency oscillations damping.

Analysis of the combined effects of SVC and SSSC controllers to improve power system stability

The primary challenge facing the electricity transmission system in the aftermath of the disruption is reestablishing stability. Through adjustment of the transmission parameters, the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices have the potential to bring the system back into stable operation. It has been shown that using many FACTS devices together is more effective than using any one device alone. In this paper, the concept of coordination control between a Static Var Compensator (SVC) and a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) is suggested in order to make the system more stable. The equivalent impedance of the line may be reduced by using the SSSC, which will also result in improved active power transfer capabilities for the line. A static var compensator, often known as an SVC, is used for shunt compensation in order to keep the bus voltage magnitude stable. When compared to the use of a single device, the use of SVC and SSSC coordinated control results in a much quicker arrival to the steady state response of the system. Both of these devices are controlled by using the same signal input tracking. It has also been seen that the system has resumed its previous synchronized state.

Reliable protection for static synchronous series compensated double-circuit transmission lines based on positive sequence active power calculations using PMUs

Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) allows dynamic control capabilities of transmitted power. Unfortunately, inserting SSSC in transmission lines (TLs) disturbs impedance-based distance relays as their directionality and reachability are affected by overreaching or underreaching. This paper proposes an approach for protecting double-circuit TLs compensated with SSSC. It relies on the centralized wide-area protection architecture to calculate a proposed driven index: the rate of change of positive sequence active power difference. Phasor measurement units (PMUs) at TL ends estimate voltage and current phasors to calculate the positive sequence active power at TL ends and send them to the system protection center that evaluates the index and gives the trip decision or not. Ensuring the sensitivity, dependability, and security of the approach is essential. So, the overall scheme integrates two other algorithms. One is based on the polarities of the incremental power at both ends to determine whether the fault is internal or external. The other evaluates the phase angle of the integrated impedance to deactivate the power swing-blocking function for fault detection. The scheme's effectiveness is validated comprehensively through extensive simulation tests for fault and system conditions. The results show that the proposed approach is fast, secure, selective, and reliable.

Control of a transformerless static synchronous series compensator for unbalanced voltage compensation

AbstractThis paper explores a transformerless static synchronous series compensator (TL‐SSSC) for mitigating voltage distortion in a power distribution line with renewable generations. A novel deadbeat current control scheme with time delay compensation is proposed which models the a‐b‐c three phase line with TL‐SSSC plus its LC filters and predicts the compensating voltages to be injected by the TL‐SSSC. Without resolving measured voltages and currents into positive and negative sequences, the scheme is computationally efficient and effective in mitigating voltage distortion due to faults occurring at different locations along the distribution line. It also eliminates the problem of inaccurate compensation voltage caused by inverter filter choking voltage drop. The paper also analyses the power controllable ranges for a TL‐SSSC under different unbalanced voltage ratios. The proposed TL‐SSSC and control scheme is validated using Typhoon Hardware‐In –Loop (HIL) device. Experimental results on mitigation unbalanced voltages of a 11kV transmission line confirm the effectiveness and high performance.

Rotor angle stability improvement by coordinated control of SVC and SSSC controllers

After a disruption in the power transmission system, the most crucial challenge is restoring the system’s stability. The FACTS devices can manipulate the transmission parameters to bring the system back into stable operation. This paper discusses the operational concepts and applications of FACTS in power systems such as the Static Var Compensator (SVC) and the Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC). When combined with the other devices, the effectiveness of each individual device is increased. This paper proposes the coordinated control of SVC and SSSC to improve system stability. The SSSC can be utilized to lower the line’s equivalent impedance and improve its operational power transfer capabilities. The SVC is used for shunt compensation to maintain bus voltage magnitude. Furthermore, the steady-state response of the system is faster when SVC and SSSC coordinated control is employed compared to a single device. The resultant variable signal of the SSSC controller is tracked to control the SVC controller. A significant fault is introduced in the tie-line of the inter-area system to analyse and validate the proposed coordinated control. MATLAB/Simulation results are presented for the proposed approach, and also a real-time simulator is used to validate the simulation results.

A preordainment approach for design of auxiliary damping controller and SSSC tuning to enhance SSR mode stability in DFIG based windfarm

ABSTRACT Sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) is a growing concern in wind turbine generators-based series capacitive compensated networks at low wind speed and peak compensation levels. It is feasible to increase the stability of SSR mode caused by a transmission line’s passive series compensation by providing active compensation using a flexible ac transmission system controller cooperating with an auxiliary damping controller. This paper presents preordainment and enhancement of SSR mode in DFIG-based series capacitive compensated line by incorporating an additional damping controller into the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC). The auxiliary damping controller modulates the reactive voltage injected by SSSC into the transmission line by considering the appropriate input control signal, reflecting the SSR instability, and giving the maximum damping to the SSR mode. The optimal input control signal is determined via residue analysis, and the design procedure of the auxiliary damping controller is presented using root locus plots. The root locus plots offer a visual representation of the loci for each mode and preordain eigenvalues for new stability, which aids in the design of the auxiliary damping controller. This feature allows to predetermine the SSR mode eigenvalue while before connecting it with SSSC. Accordingly, it provides a controlled dampening to SSR mode such that the desired damping ratio for SSR mode can be achieved without influencing the stability of other modes. The impact of the designed auxiliary damping controller is examined at high compensation levels and low wind speed. The eigenvalue analysis results show that the preordained eigenvalues found using root locus plots are correct and the proposed approach predominantly enhances the stability of SSR mode. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis and transient simulations are used to show the detuning and dampening of SSR mode. The proposed work is executed using MATLAB/Simulink.
