Is there a news function for an infinite cosmic string?

AbstractA special form of the Bondi news function can be associated with an infinite static cosmic string. In case of a radiaing isolated system pierced by an infinite cosmic string, the total news function will be composed of two parts — one characterizing the radiation field, the other the string. Some examples are discussed and related to a recently given solution, which was interpreted as an outgoing gravitational wave due to the splitting of an infinite cosmic string.

PARTICLE CREATION BY COSMIC STRINGS

The creation of particles by a nonstationary gravitational field during the formation of a straight, static cosmic string has been investigated and the contribution to the number density of created particles from modes with the lowest angular quantum number assessed. It is found that for GUT scale strings the energy density of created particles is many orders of magnitude smaller than the corresponding energy density of radiation at GUT times.

Cosmic strings and Einstein-Rosen soliton waves.

We consider all generalized soliton solutions of the Einstein-Rosen form in the cylindrical context. They are Petrov type-I solutions which describe solitonlike waves interacting with a line source placed on the symmetry axis. Some of the solutions develop a curvature singularity on the axis which is typical of massive line sources, whereas others just have the conical singularity revealing the presence of a static cosmic string. The analysis is based on the asymptotic behavior of the Riemann and metric tensors, the deficit angle, and a C-velocity associated to Thorne's C-energy. The C-energy is found to be radiated along the null directions.
