Higher excited states of toluene are produced by two photon excitation with laser pulses of λ= 3471 A. The yield and some properties of these states are measured using the fluorescence of the first excited state of toluene, which is produced by internal conversion from the higher excited states. At 23°C little energy transfer from the higher excited states to added solutes is observed. At –78°C, however, there is some reaction with chloroform and the nature of this effect is briefly discussed. The yield of the higher excited states is measured by conventional physical techniques and reasonable agreement with other data and theory is obtained.
