Second-year success: offering differentiated support to high achieving students

Transition to university has long been identified as a key issue for institutions, however, much of the research focuses on the transition from level 3 to University and progression into employment. What is less commonly addressed, is the transition through university, helping students to understand and navigate the different challenges, expectations, and opportunities associated with starting levels 5 and 6 (Hill and Tinker, 2018; Gahagan and Hunter, 2006). Additionally, there is often a focus on provision for learners who are struggling academically and much less consideration for those who are doing well and achieving high marks. Informed by the University of Surrey’s STARS programme, we, in collaboration with students, worked to identify issues and challenges faced by high achieving students when they entered their second year. Along with further work related opportunities, a multi-disciplinary network for high achieving students was identified as a useful approach. We are looking to the hive mind of ALDCon24 for practical examples of how student-led academic networks and other innovative initiatives can enhance transition through university for high-achieving students. Tracing Trajectories: Qualitative Visualizations of Migrant Death in South Texas, 1993–2020

Executive Summary This paper explores how qualitative information may be used to enhance understanding and inform recommendations for improved accounting of migrant deaths along the Texas-Mexico border. While border crossing related deaths affect jurisdictions throughout the US’s Southwestern border states and Northern Mexican states, Texas has unique challenges that merit specific examination. In short, the management and investigation of unidentified migrant decedents in Texas is severely fragmented and often noncompliant with Texas Criminal Code Procedure. I explore a way to improve accounting of migrant deaths leveraging qualitative information, local newspaper articles from South Texas and Northern Mexico, by using descriptive summaries coupled with Sankey Diagrams and a programmatic technique, qualitative spatial representation (QSR). QSR enabled me to identify under-recognized stakeholders (South Texas locals, Mexican consulates) and under-supported counties (i.e., those with migrant deaths that do not share a border directly with Mexico). I found that local English-language newspapers obscured the prevalence of migrant deaths and that their narrative tone of “business as usual” normalized the occurrence of such deaths. The Spanish-language articles better represented the diversity of agencies and individuals that were involved in the various aspects of migrant remains management and forensic investigation, most notably residents of South Texas themselves (or situational participants who first found the remains) and Mexican consulates. Finally, I noted that the collaborations among Texas counties and between Texan and Mexican jurisdictions, when they were described in the newspapers, highlighted that the phenomenon of migrant deaths penetrates beyond the dividing line of the Rio Grande/Río Bravo River. Migrant deaths must be accounted for in a way that reflects a regional experience in which people may perish as far as ~100 miles into Texas’ interior. Considering these observations, I have two policy recommendations. First, the Office of the Texas Governor should establish funds distinct from the Operation Lone Star program for the management of unidentified human remains. Currently, grants through the Operation Lone Star Program are the only funds available in Texas to support identification of migrant decedents. However, this program is explicitly designed to further border security operations in the state of Texas, which can contradict efforts around recovery and identification. The documentation and forensic investigation of the unidentified deceased can be eclipsed or neglected under the larger deterrence aims of Operation Lone Star. Second, to improve accounting and increase documentation of migrant deaths, a Regional Identification Center should be established in South Texas. Not every county in Texas has or has access to a Medical Examiner’s office, including the means to transport and pay for autopsy or other forensic services. The Center would provide training, store extra equipment such as mobile refrigerated morgues, and hire personnel to inventory cases, and report information to the state (e.g., vital statistics) and to foreign consulates. A Regional Identification Center would counteract the challenges highlighted in the local newspaper summaries and QSR by decreasing the isolation of counties experiencing migrant deaths and serve as a documentary and communication hub for stakeholders in Texas and Mexico.

Defining preferred turfgrass features for lawn choice for Floridian homeowners

Turfgrass lawns provide many environmental benefits, including temperature moderation, soil stabilization in urban centers, and surface water runoff reduction in the rapidly urbanizing societies. Recently, more sustainable management of urban vegetation have arisen to encourage Florida homeowners to shift from high-input (e.g., fertilizer, water) to low-input landscapes through initiatives such as the Florida Friendly Landscapes and Florida Water Star Programs. To support the water conservation programs in Florida, and better understand homeowners' lawn choices, the objective of this study is to identify and evaluate homeowners' preferred turfgrass features for lawn choices and understand the context of promoting sustainable landscaping practices in the state of Florida. Approximately 1000 Florida homeowners were surveyed online and ranked their most preferred turfgrass features out of a set of 12 alternatives. A rank-ordered logit model was utilized to evaluate Florida homeowners’ preferences for different turfgrass features and determine if they influence turfgrass selection for Florida homeowners. The results showed that the top features were drought tolerance, color, frequency of mowing, disease resistance, and pest tolerance. Identification and communication of water proficient, low fertilizer input turfgrass cultivars that are tolerant to environmental stresses (e.g., drought, traffic, shade) are needed in Florida. Policymakers should promote strategies to combat drought tolerant cultivars. Extension agents should educate homeowners on grass dormancy and drought tolerance (affecting color change) as well as promote disease resistance and pest tolerant species through the Florida Friendly Landscape and WaterStar Programs.

Disk Evolution Study Through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars (DESTINYS): The SPHERE view of the Orion star-forming region

Context. Resolved observations at near-infrared (near-IR) and millimeter wavelengths have revealed a diverse population of planet-forming disks. In particular, near-IR scattered light observations usually target close-by, low-mass star-forming regions. However, disk evolution in high-mass star-forming regions is likely affected by the different environment. Orion is the closest high-mass star-forming region, enabling resolved observations to be undertaken in the near-IR. Aims. We seek to examine planet-forming disks, in scattered light, within the high-mass star-forming region of Orion in order to study the impact of the environment in a higher-mass star-forming region on disk evolution. Methods. We present SPHERE/IRDIS H-band data for a sample of 23 stars in the Orion star-forming region observed within the DESTINYS (Disk Evolution Study Through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars) program. We used polarization differential imaging in order to detect scattered light from circumstellar dust. From the scattered light observations we characterized the disk orientation, radius, and contrast. We analysed the disks in the context of the stellar parameters and the environment of the Orion star-forming region. We used ancillary X-shooter spectroscopic observations to characterize the central stars in the systems. We furthermore used a combination of new and archival ALMA mm-continuum photometry to characterize the dust masses present in the circumstellar disks. Results. Within our sample, we detect extended circumstellar disks in ten of 23 systems. Of these, three are exceptionally extended (V351 Ori, V599 Ori, and V1012 Ori) and show scattered light asymmetries that may indicate perturbations by embedded planets or (in the case of V599 Ori) by an outer stellar companion. Our high-resolution imaging observations are also sensitive to close (sub)stellar companions and we detect nine such objects in our sample, of which six were previously unknown. We find in particular a possible substellar companion (either a very low-mass star or a high-mass brown dwarf) 137 au from the star RY Ori. We find a strong anticorrelation between disk detection and multiplicity, with only two of our ten disk detections located in stellar multiple systems. We also find a correlation between scattered light contrast and the millimeter flux. This trend is not captured by previous studies of a more diversified sample and is due to the absence of extended, self-shadowed disks in our Orion sample. Conversely, we do not find significant correlations between the scattered light contrast of the disks and the stellar mass or age. We investigate the radial extent of the disks and compare this to the estimated far-ultraviolet (FUV) field strength at the system location. While we do not find a direct correlation, we notice that no extended disks are detected above an FUV field strength of ~300 G0.

Prevalence and correlates of mental health problems among different occupations of medical workers during COVID-19 outbreak in China.

Health workers involved in the fight to prevent the COVID-19 outbreak were exposed to hazards. Detailed information on mental health problems in different medical occupations is crucial. To examined the prevalence of mental health issues in three medical occupations as well as the relationships between mental health problems and correlates in each occupation. This study utilizing the Questionnaire Star program was conducted among medical workers working at medical institutions in China from February 17 to 24, 2020. The Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), the Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) were used to assess mental health problems. The prevalence of any mental health problems in the three occupations was 43.6, 34.6, and 32.9% for nurses, paramedical workers (PMWs), and doctors, respectively. Three occupations shared some correlates, such as being overworked, not having enough time to rest, support from colleagues, and previous mental health status. There were specific factors for each occupation. For doctors, age, educational level, living status, support from family, and previous physical status were related factors in mental health problems. Working in a designated hospital for treating COVID-19, having COVID-19 event exposures, and receiving support from family were associated with the mental health problems of the nurses. PMWs' mental health problems was linked to educational level and care from supervisors or heads of department. Different medical occupations have distinct impacts on mental health issues. Policy makers and mental health professionals working to prepare for potential disease outbreaks should be aware of multiple factors in different occupations.

Exploring Observational Heliophysics Across All Scales: Reflections and Insights From the 2023 NASA Heliophysics Summer School

AbstractThe field of heliophysics encompasses a diverse range of research areas and rich plasma environments, from the solar dynamo and solar wind turbulence, to the complex terrestrial thermosphere‐ionosphere‐magnetosphere (TIM) system, to investigations of both induced and intrinsic magnetospheres across the solar system. This perspective paper delves into the experiences and outcomes of a summer school held in person in Boulder, Colorado, USA, from 7–11 August, which offered a platform for interdisciplinary learning and collaboration. The event, supported by NASA's Living with a Star program and hosted by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science, assembled a cohort of 26 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from around the world, all engaged in heliophysics research. The summer school included a series of lectures, interactive activities, and a culminating capstone project. The participants' diverse backgrounds enriched discussions and encouraged novel approaches to traditional problems. The capstone projects spanned an array of topics, including investigating the origins of solar wind switchbacks, dissecting the sequence of events from solar eruptions and their corresponding terrestrial consequences, investigating the energy transfer from solar coronal mass ejections to Earth's magnetosphere, and advocating for the exploration of Coulomb collisions in understanding large‐scale global systems. Through this perspective, we shed light on the value of international and interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing heliophysics research. This perspective paper encapsulates the ethos of the summer school, serving as a testament to the continuing and collective pursuit of unraveling the mysteries of the heliosphere.

A comprehensive program in academic health professions to enhance faculty recruitment, mentoring, productivity, and retention: The case of RCSI's StAR program

Top faculty talent recruitment, mentoring, productivity, and retention are paramount for organizational success among institutions of higher learning. Programs would do well to treat these various aspects of faculty management/development as inextricably linked to one another, rather than viewing recruitment or retention in a vacuum. The Strategic Academic Recruitment (StAR) program at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin was founded to bear these things, along with best practices in faculty development, in mind to enhance organizational effectiveness. This paper provides some background, description, and outcomes of the program thus far, revealing positive trends in scholarly productivity, teaching, program faculty commitment, and the development of future leaders for the institution, even while further evaluation and continued quality improvement for the StAR initiative are called for. It is hoped that the details provided here can be helpful for other academic organizations as they consider any of various initiatives aimed to attract high-quality labor capital, position those faculty for success, and enhance organizational effectiveness and reputation.

COMPARISON OF AUTOLOGOUS ADIPOSE-DERIVED TISSUE STROMAL VASCULAR FRACTION (AD-TSVF) BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTS FOR THEIR STEM CELL CONTENT

Deriving autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from adipose tissues without using enzymes requires sophisticated biomedical instruments. Applied pressure on tissues and cells are adjusted manually although centrifugation and filtration systems are frequently used. The number of derived MSCs therefore could differ between instruments. We compared the number of MSCs obtained from four commercially available devices and our newly designed and produced instrument (A2, B3, L3, M2 and T3). Three-hundred mL of adipose tissue was obtained from a female patient undergoing liposuction using the transillumination solution. Obtained tissue was equally distributed to each device and handled according to the producers' guides. After handling, 3 mL stromal vascular fraction (SVF) was obtained from each device. Freshly isolated SVF was characterized using multi-color flow cytometry (Navios Flow Cytometer, Beckman Coulter, USA). Cell surface antigens were chosen according to IFATS and ISCT. CD31-FITC, CD34-PC5,5, CD73-PE, CD90-PB and CD45-A750 (Backman Coulter, USA) fluorochrome-labeled monoclonal antibodies were assessed. Markers were combined with ViaKrome (Beckman Coulter, USA) to determine cell viability. At least 105 cells were acquired from each sample. A software (Navios EX, Beckman Coulter, USA) was used to create dot plots and to calculate the cell composition percentages. The data was analyzed in the Kaluza 2.1 software package (Beckman Coulter, USA). Graphs were prepared in GraphPad Prism. CD105 PC7/CD31 FITC cell percentages were 23,9%, 13,5%, 24,6%, 11,4% and 28,8% for the A2, B3, L3, M2 and T3 devices, respectively. We conclude that the isolated MSC percentage ranged from 11,4% to 28,8% between devices. The number of MSCs in SVF are key determinants of success in orthobiological treatments. Building an equitable future? BRAC’s STAR program and young women’s economic empowerment in Bangladesh

ABSTRACT Equitable futures depend upon better employment outcomes for young women. We use a skills ecosystems approach to explore how youth skills development programs can maximise their impact in highly gendered societies and labour markets. While improving employment outcomes and incomes for young women, BRAC’s STAR program cannot withstand Bangladesh’s deep-rooted and socially restrictive norms and practices. Short-term successes are diluted as family pressures and commitments take precedent over young women’s economic lives. Adding a temporal dimension to the concept of skills ecosystems, these findings highlight that maintaining these impacts requires constant renegotiation and advocacy to challenge the structural obstacles within households and labour markets and within national policies and investments that constrain their longer-term economic empowerment.

Work Engagement and Safety Behavior of Nurses in Specialized Cancer Hospitals: The Mediating Role of Self-Efficacy

Aim. This paper aimed to examine the current state of nurse safety behavior, and the effect of work engagement on it, and to explore the mediating effect of self-efficacy between work engagement and nurse safety behavior in specialized cancer hospitals. Background. Nurse safety behavior affects the quality of care and outcomes for patients with cancer. The research proves that self-efficacy is associated with work engagement, but the relationship between self-efficacy, work engagement, and nurse safety behavior needs to be clarified. Methods. This study used a convenience sampling method to survey 957 nurses from January to February 2023. The survey included tertiary specialized cancer hospitals in five provinces in China. Sociodemography information, the Work Engagement Scale, the Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Nurse Safety Behavior Scale were used for the survey. A Questionnaire Star program collected all the data automatically. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 24 was employed for Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis to examine the association between work engagement, self-efficacy, and nurse safety behavior. Structural equation models were built using Analysis of Moment Structures version 24.0 software. Results. The results showed that the nurse safety behavior was at a high level in specialized cancer hospitals. There was a significant positive relationship between the variables work engagement, self-efficacy, and nurse safety behavior with coefficients ranging from 0.244 to 0.564. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that self-efficacy partially mediated the effect between work engagement and nurse safety behavior, accounting for 25.3% of the total effect. Conclusion. Self-efficacy mediates the relationship between work engagement and nurse safety behavior, and by increasing self-efficacy, nurse safety behavior can be improved, thus ensuring patient safety. Implications for Nursing Management. Managers should promote high work engagement and nurse safety behaviors by fostering nurses’ self-efficacy.

Stopping Power Calculation of Protons and α–Particles for C2H4 and C6H6 in Energy Range 0.01-1000 MeV

In this research, a theoretical study was conducted to calculate the total stopping power of some relativistic heavy ions (protons and alpha particles) during their passage through some media (ethylene and benzene) in the energy range (0.01-1000 MeV). The equations were programmed using MATLAB2021, the curve fitting tool was used, and the calculated results were compared with the experimental data of the P- Star and A-Star programs for the same missiles in those organic compounds.

Effects of Spatial Designs on Young Entrepreneurs and Visitors’ Feelings Toward Guangfu New Village, a Cultural and Creative Military Dependents’ Village, in Taichung City

The Guangfu New Village was the first military dependents’ village in Taichung City and has a “cultural landscape.” The combination of age-old brick buildings and the rich local cultural history of the village allowed for the transformation of the idle space into a cultural and creative base for young entrepreneurs. However, despite the introduction of the Star Program and government subsidies, the planning is inadequate, causing young entrepreneurs to be confined by the different regulations of the management units in terms of designs and decorations. To solve this major problem, we explored and recorded the “spatial status” of the Guangfu New Village with the concept of a garden city by analyzing the history and architectural features of the village. To develop a military dependents’ village with cultural and creative endeavors, we surveyed for this study to identify the advantages and disadvantages of two different village groups. In-depth interviews with young entrepreneurs and local tourists were carried out with a literature review to analyze the development process considering local culture and its results. The needs of different business types and their problems with the management regulations were determined. Based on the results, we suggested designs to transform youth entrepreneurship bases, which serve as references to the Guangfu New Village for investments and planning improvements. The young entrepreneur bases can be a reference for the sustainable transformation model of community spaces. Residents can understand the importance of local culture and identity, which helps young entrepreneurs to solve the obstacles in spatial transformation for SDG 11 (building sustainable cities and communities).

Implementation of a Digital-Based Early Safety Warning System Program on a Branch Logistics Company in Jakarta

Lack of involvement in interventions to carry out observations and analysis that causes the conditions and behavior of employees at one of the logistics companies at the Jakarta branch. The research aims to reduce potential unsafe of conditions & unsafe actions in the workplace environment. This process involves employees recognizing potential problems in the workplace within the procedures of observation, feedback, and employee behavior interventions. The methodology used in this study is a descriptive method to describe present or ongoing issues. This method allows for assessing a condition and program implementation to make further improvements in the future. There are still several obstacles in implementing the K3 Program (Safety, Health, and Environment), where the program is still being performed manually. BBS STAR program does not cover unsafe conditions and unsafe actions, so reporting workers to management regarding conditions at work still not optimal yet. Employees also have some difficulty reporting unsafe conditions and unsafe actions in the workplace. SEWS program can be a preventive step in the occurrence of potential danger. The quality of employees could increase with the habit of analyzing dangerous aspects of the workplace environment. Energetic Neutral Atom Imaging of the Earth’s Ring Current and Some Results from the Chinese Double Star Program

The ring current region in the Earth’s magnetosphere contains energetic charged particles, which are injected from the magnetotail, get trapped in the inner magnetosphere, and finally drift around the Earth. The current, essentially carried by ions, is caused by the differences between the drift of the positively charged ions and that of negatively charged electrons. The charge exchange that occurs between ring current ions and geocoronal atoms determines the distribution and evolution of the ring current and lays the basis for remote detection techniques. By measuring the energetic neutral atoms produced by the charge-exchange process, the ring current can be remotely detected via energetic neutral atom imaging. The Chinese Double Star Program operated the NeUtral Atom Detector Unit (NUADU) onboard one of its two satellites for more than four years. A variety of studies were conducted using multiple methods applied to observations, such as intuitive image inspection, forward modeling, and inversion. Energetic neutral atom imaging was established as a promising technique for future imaging projects.

Group intervention for university students who are Internally Displaced Persons

The present study adapted and assessed the efficacy of a brief psychological group intervention, the STAR program: Strengths, Transitions, Adjustments and Resilience for university students who are Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Within groups research design was used in the study. Non-probability snowball sampling technique was used to select the sample which comprised of 11 IDP students studying in different universities of Punjab with age range 19–24 years. It was hypothesized that undergoing the group intervention would increase coping self-efficacy, social self-efficacy and psychological adjustment and decrease emotional distress (depression, anxiety, stress) of the participants. Initial screening was done in which participants having moderate or high levels of anxiety, depression or stress were selected. The intervention comprised of 6 online sessions, given twice a week. The intervention was cognitive-behavioural in nature including group activities and homework activities. Pre and post-assessment was done in which participants had to complete measures on coping and social self-efficacy, emotional distress and psychological adjustment. Results showed that participants’ depression and anxiety decreased significantly from pre to post-intervention level. There was also a significant increase in social self-efficacy of participants after receiving the intervention. However, no significant increases in coping self-efficacy or psychological adjustment were observed. The feedback gathered from the participants provided suggestions for further modifications, after which this program could be adopted by different universities and offered to the IDP students to enhance their acculturation and help them assimilate into their host communities more easily. Overall, the group intervention revealed promising findings that require further investigation.

Evaluating a community-based training program for evidence-based treatments for PTSD using the RE-AIM framework.

Community mental health providers increasingly serve veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, recent surveys find that less than 20% of community providers are adequately trained to implement evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for PTSD. Since 2017, the STRONG STAR Training Initiative (SSTI) model has adapted traditional learning collaboratives aimed at increasing availability of EBTs for PTSD in community settings. This study reports on STRONG STAR program evaluation using the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework to assess dissemination and implementation outcomes. Between January 2018 and January 2020, 280 mental health providers from 25 states participated. Providers initiating EBTs for PTSD with 930 patients, reaching 29% who had PTSD among their caseload. Overall, 238 of patients who initiated EBT completed treatment. Patients who completed treatment demonstrated a 32.51-point decrease, t(237) = 25.27, p < .001, in PTSD symptom severity and an 8.73-point decrease, t(231) = 19.95, p < .001, in depression symptom severity following treatment. High rates of SSTI providers continued implementing EBT for PTSD at 6 months (cognitive processing therapy [CPT]: 95%; prolonged exposure [PE]: 72%) and 1-year (CPT: 87%; PE: 77%) posttraining, similar to outcomes reported by community and Department of Veterans Affairs providers. In reporting on the first evaluation of a National Training Program for community-based mental health providers, we look ahead to continued work in refining scalable models for building provider competence in delivery of EBTs. Analysis of Energy Efficiency Characteristics of Domestic and Foreign EXIT Lights

In this study, the energy efficiency of EXIT lights, a firefighting product, was analyzed from the perspective of general lighting equipment by examining domestic and foreign certification systems, such as KS, IEC, and the American ‘Energy Star Program’. Experiments were performed on EXIT lights from the United States, Japan, Austria, and domestic EXIT lights. The energy efficiency test factors derived from domestic and foreign standards include power, power factor, current total harmonic distortion, third harmonic current component, and fifth harmonic current component. The results of the test indicated that the US EXIT light consumed the least energy at 2.8 W, satisfying the US EXIT light Energy Star Program regulations, while other products consumed about 5-6 W. Additionally, the US product exhibited the lowest power factor of 0.1, while other products showed a value between 0.5 and 0.62; so there was no product that satisfied the KS (0.9 or more) and Energy Star Program (0.7 or more) standards. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of current in the US product was the lowest at 23.1%, while the Austrian product showed the highest THD at 132%. None of the products satisfied the KS standard of 20% or less. However, all products satisfied the KS standard of 86% or less and 61% or less for the 3rd and 5th harmonic components, respectively. Although the power consumption of the EXIT lights is as low as several watts, if the demand for high-power EXIT lights (several tens of watts) equals the level of lighting equipment in the future, it will be necessary to increase energy efficiency by employing power-factor-limiting regulations for EXIT lights.

Journey to the stars program: the gendered and generational governance of professionalization on Wattpad

ABSTRACT This article proposes that professionalization services are significant media industry spaces because they are the first access points to industry work for many nonprofessionals. I use business-facing marketing materials from the popular self-publishing platform Wattpad as a case study, drawing on discourse analysis to argue that the platform’s strict guidelines governing which users can professionalize are a response to gendered and generational assumptions within legacy media industries about the commercial value of the data gathered from Wattpad’s predominantly young and female userbase. Weighing Wattpad’s business-facing rhetoric against the platform’s strict governance of professionalization, I argue that the efforts of platforms to promote their users to legacy media industries as exploitable workforces can provide important insights into how and why platforms structure professionalization for their users.
