ABSTRACT The needs for independent ‘lifelong learning’ is on the rise for the individuals living in today's fast-paced society. As a result, the significance of ‘information literacy’ as the core requirement for lifelong learning has become widely recognized. Some countries have even established standards for information literacy at the national level, and introduced programs to improve the overall level of information literacy i n the school curriculum. In Korea, various studies have been done to identify the importance of information literacy, and also there are increasing offerings of information literacy programs in regular curriculum. Based on the result of self-efficiency assessment by the students who attended the information literacy courses, this study tries to examine the effects of those programs. It consequently confirms that these curriculums resul ted in improvement of the information literacy of the students, and also provide some suggestions and guidelines for the design of the curriculum for information based on the findi ngs.

Participation and Pedagogy: Connecting the Social Web to ACRL Learning Outcomes

This article examines the connection between ACRL information literacy standards and constructivist pedagogy. This connection is used to support use of Web 2.0 tools for information literacy instruction. Sample exercises using these tools are provided for each ACRL learning outcome, and the tools' suitability for the constructivist approach is reasserted.

Information literacy, diversity and the role of reflection in creating knowledge

Diversity in higher education calls for process oriented information literacy (IL) practitioners rather than source oriented practitioners. They must be generalists because e.g. students with different backgrounds to a higher degree bring multi- and interdisciplinarity into the situation of creating knowledge and problem solving. It is a situation where counselling is about how to prioritise and combine the multidisciplinarity rather than knowing a subject in depth. The purposes of this workshop are: To facilitate answers to the challenges IL practitioners meet in their work in an educational environment characterized by diversity To go through a process from pedagogical reflection to practical ideas about teaching or counselling. The participants will be challenged on their pedagogical awareness, competencies and creativity and on their understanding of information literacy. The participants will not be given the answers, but in order to live up to the concept of a workshop, we must all work and participate in the exploration for answers. The workshop will be a mix of understandings of IL, investigations of diversity and creating knowledge, pedagogical tools, examples of teaching materials, theoretical concepts and creative processes. We will deal with the following questions: How does IL fit into the process of creating knowledge? How should we look at information literacy? As a defined set of skills, qualifications and competencies or as a readiness to handle certain intellectual or academic situations? Does diversity mean the end of information literacy standards?

ABD or EdD? A Model of Library Training for Distance Doctoral Students

ABSTRACT Libraries have been struggling for years to move beyond 1-shot library training. In spite of efforts in the last decade to promote information literacy for undergraduate and graduate students alike, libraries more often than not are still not reaching the goals articulated in the Association of College & Research Libraries's information literacy standards. The problems are compounded when institutions serve students who also happen to be taking part or all of their classes online or at field-based sites. The model for providing a library training program for students in the Doctor of Education (EdD) program in a distance program focuses on providing students with training that builds sequentially and developmentally at the points of need for students in the 1st year of classes and provides additional support for students once they have completed their course work. This multistepped approach is designed to help doctoral students throughout the doctoral process.

Library-Led Faculty Workshops: Helping Distance Educators Meet Information Literacy Goals in the Online Classroom

ABSTRACT At University of Maryland University College (UMUC), librarians have designed and led a number of multiday, asynchronous online workshops for faculty. The workshops teach faculty how to meet information literacy goals in the virtual classroom. Through hands-on activities and discussion among their colleagues, participants in the faculty workshops learn about the university's information literacy standards, library resources and services, free Web tools, and how best to design class assignments involving library research. Library-led faculty workshops at UMUC have increased library visibility and furthered collaboration between faculty and librarians. This article discusses 5 workshops, detailing workshop content and logistics and demonstrating how librarians can help distance faculty further information literacy goals for students.

Taking Library 2.0 to the Next Level: Using a Course Wiki for Teaching Information Literacy to Honors Students

ABSTRACT How do educators capitalize on students’ comfort with ubiquitous communications in order to develop information literacy skills required in the 21st century? A curriculum materials librarian and a professor in the School of Education present an approach that uses library instruction, online research scaffolds, and peer evaluation within a class wiki to enhance student research practices and academic achievement. The explosion of information sources and access to networked technologies has provided the opportunity to “ratchet up” the expectations for student research in higher education. The Association of College & Research Libraries's information literacy standards for higher education provide a framework for setting these expectations. The authors describe features of an introductory education course that seeks to enhance honors freshman students’ knowledge of library research resources, efficient research skills, and scholarly writing, as described in these standards.

Trends in Chemical Information Literacy and Collection Development, 2000–2009

This review covers major trends in the field of chemical information over the past ten years and how they influenced information literacy and collection development practices of chemical information specialists. Particular attention is given to changes in information literacy and discovery practices as they relate to developments in chemical information resources, the integration of various resources online, and the creation of information literacy standards in the 2000s. Also, changes in licensing and purchasing for online resources as they relate to pricing models, ownership, platform, and distribution are discussed as major influences to new collection development practices.

Using teaching faculty focus groups to assess information literacy core competencies at a university level

Grand Valley State University librarians designed and conducted teaching faculty focus groups to gauge their response to a new information literacy (IL) core student competencies document created to support a developing library IL programme. Although the competencies were inspired by existing, widely known information literacy standards and guidelines the University Libraries' Information Literacy Competencies document (ILCC) is unique and written specifically to address the university's culture and curriculum. The authors of this paper formed a research team to assemble two groups of teaching faculty from various disciplines and to analyse focus group transcripts using a content analysis approach. The resulting data revealed unexpected perceptions about information literacy among teaching faculty and concerns about how to apply the ILCC document. In analysing the data, we generated ideas for supporting teaching faculty as they apply the ILCC document. Focus groups were used to gauge teaching faculty perceptions of the ILCC document. The results of the focus groups informed our efforts to tailor the ILCC document to existing university programs and curricula by using the language that was familiar to teaching faculty; and to explore teaching faculty perceptions of challenges and needed support. The paper explains how the focus group method was employed to test information literacy competencies in order to provide a potential model for other universities who are customising their own information literacy standards

Information Literacy in Public Affairs Curriculum

In this article, a librarian and a professor who work at the same university trace the development of information literacy standards. These standards were applied retrospectively to a graduate course that the professor teaches; the librarian was one of his students at that time. The article offers suggestions for guiding students on how to use and evaluate information resources, in order to complete a term-long research project. It also addresses librarians’ efforts in educating both students and other faculty on information literacy.

Am I Information Literate? and How Library Support My Information Needs?

Article clarifies information literacy (IL) implementation that is recognizing information needs, finding information, valuing, selecting information, creating new information and presenting it to get some inputs, applied in Cornel University, Dayton University, North Sumatera University, Duta Wacana University, and Bina Nusantara University. Data were collected by library research. It can be concluded that IL implementation in some mentioned universities have met the IL standards, IL is needed to develop students’ knowledge, skills, and performance, some IL have applied in the formal teaching activity, so that it needs to be researched so that all parties are satisfied and the goal of study can be achieved.

Valuing Information Literacy: Affective Learning and the ACRL Standards

Higher education information literacy standards have readily addressed cognitive skills, although affective competencies—the emotional abilities that students must acquire in order to successfully navigate the research process—have not yet been incorporated into standards. This paper presents examples of current information literacy standards, integrating affective competencies or dispositions, including the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) 21st Century Learning Standards , and proposes a model for affective-focused higher education information literacy standards. The role of affect in library learning, the importance of affective competencies, and the centrality of affective learning to student mastery of research skills are discussed. Viewing information literacy as an integrated literacy, encompassing affective learning, technological literacy, and critical thinking, can provide avenues for greater collaboration with faculty in support of effective student research assignments.

Proposing a 6+3 model for developing information literacy standards for schools: A case for Singapore

Several comprehensive information literacy (IL) standards have been developed worldwide for use in the education sector, specifically for students and teachers. Apart from the more generic International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) IL standards, such standards are more appropriate for their countries of origins. If these standards are to be applied to schools in Southeast Asia, then some form of contextualization and customization is necessary to cater for gaps that surface due to their different and unique education environments and cultures. In addition, as a result of the growth of Web 2.0, information seeking moves rapidly in the social dimension. It is therefore timely to review ongoing research in the areas of collaborative information seeking and behavior, as well as education values in order to derive a set of up-to-date, relevant and holistic IL standards for schools. This paper proposes a model to help to develop IL standards for schools in Singapore that was constructed using the aforementioned standards as a guide, based on the paradigm of a popular information and technology literacy process model known as the Big6, and steered by related educational initiatives and education values that have been recently implemented in Singapore. The proposed model expounds each of the Big6 categories in terms of Techniques and Tools, and supplements those categories with three important mindsets of Ethics and Social Responsibility, Collaborative Information Behavior, and Attitudes and Perceptions.

Information Literacy and Cooperative Learning: A Global Housing Project

Close collaboration between faculty and librarians yields a seamless blend of core subject information and information seeking/evaluation skills. This article examines how collaboration and the integration of information literacy skills into an undergraduate global housing unit affects the ability of students to locate and evaluate materials for a global housing unit comparing housing in five countries with that of housing in the United States. Through use of ACRL Information Literacy Standards and the cognitive dimension process of the revised Bloom's taxonomy, the librarian and the faculty member collaborated to present a small group process incorporating several learning techniques in a seamless learning unit.

Customizing an open‐source tool to enhance information literacy

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to discuss customizing an open‐source program called the Assignment Calculator into a tool designed specifically to serve the needs of students at California State University, Fresno, and at San José State University. The paper aims to discuss information literacy standards, students' need for convenient access to resources, time‐management and research help and the technical issues involved in such a project.Design/methodology/approachThe paper presents how the steps and content of the open‐source tool were connected to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards. Subject matter was researched and evaluated from other tutorials to find the most valuable instructional concepts based on assessment of their students' needs. The paper discusses ways to customize, maintain and continue to revise the Assignment Calculator to keep it relevant and beneficial.FindingsThe customized online tool can help improve understanding of the library's role in information literacy and provides opportunity for librarians and faculty to collaborate. Statistics and a survey can yield information on usage and usefulness.Originality/valueThis case study reviews current research in incorporating information literacy concepts into an online tool. It describes the process for librarians to research and customize an open source tool and concludes that while it is initially time‐consuming, it is ultimately a rewarding experience which will improve students' understanding of these concepts.

An information literacy program built for relevance and purpose

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to discuss the design and implementation of an information literacy program for the Faculties of Science and Engineering at McGill University.Design/methodology/approachBorrowing from the literature and Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, a theoretical approach to audience characterization is used to generate learning outcomes aligned with American Library Association Information Literacy Standards for Science and Technology.FindingsResults suggest that a learner‐centered program, addressing potential gaps between perceived and actual skills and needs, is well‐received by the student population.Originality/valueThis study, primarily focused on the description of a program, provides timely and useful information to academic librarians.

Google: to use, or not to use. What is the question?

AbstractThis article by Natasha Choolhun, with input from Emma Harris and colleagues, considers how the proliferation of freely available legal information has affected standards of information literacy and research capability in the current legal environment. Real life examples are given to illustrate how staff in law firms are using resources such as Google and Wikipedia in preference over authoritative legal material. The phrase “Google Generation” is explored and consideration is given to how law schools and commercial firms are attempting to instil in their lawyers principles of good information literacy and research skills.

What Engineering Sophomores Know and Would Like to Know About Engineering Information Sources and Access.

This exploratory study reports on what engineering undergraduate students know and would like to learn about engineering information sources and access. Responses were obtained on selected performance measures within the framework of Information Literacy Standards for Science and Engineering/Technology (ACRL/ALA/STS 2006). The results are based on 70 sophomores who completed a four-page paper-and-pencil questionnaire on April 4, 2008 at UCLA's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The paper discusses implications of this study's findings in light of engineering education in general, and specifically with regard to instructing all engineering students in the proper use of a variety of pathways in accessing high quality engineering resources for numerous lifelong purposes.

Information Literacy: The Missing Link in Early Childhood Education

The rapid growth of information over the last 30 or 40 years has made it impossible for educators to prepare students for the future without teaching them how to be effective information managers. The American Library Association refers to those students who manage information effectively as information literate. Information literacy instruction has been a priority in many secondary schools since the American Association of School Libraries published the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning in 1998. Although these standards were written for grades K-12, information literacy is still not the focus in many early childhood classrooms. This article discusses the importance of information literacy instruction in early childhood education. Research suggests that early information literacy instruction, using informational texts and collaborative, teacher–librarian curriculum planning, promotes critical thinking and increases the ability to problem-solve—two skills necessary for survival in today’s Information Age.
