Media firms’ preparedness and coping strategies in the emergence of social media: a case of Tanzania

ABSTRACTUnlike the situation in the past, media firms have found themselves in the midst of challenge to withstand pressure resulting from social media’s entry in the journalism business. This study assessed the Tanzania’s media firms’ preparedness and coping strategies in the emergence of social media. A five-point Likert scale questionnaire was answered by 106 respondents from selected media firms in Dar es Salaam, namely: Independent Television (ITV), Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), TBC Fm, Clouds Fm, Mwananchi Newspaper, Tanzania Standard Newspaper, and Uhuru newspaper. A descriptive and multiple regression analysis was used. Findings indicate convergence and partnering of traditional media with social media positively and significantly influencing media firms’ competitiveness in the era of social media in Tanzania. The majority of respondents practiced some form of convergence and partnering for lowering operational costs, more profit generation, and differentiation of what they offer. The study concluded that social media is a necessary complement to media firms that may enhance their competitiveness. Appropriate policies and regulations need to be in place to ensure successive incorporation for good journalism and informed societies.

A linguistic analysis of representation of corruption and corruption-related clauses in Kenyan print media

The purpose of this paper is to examine how language is used to represent the menace of corruption in Kenyan Print Media. Corruption has become a burning issue in Kenya as a country and in organizational research. It has been a long-standing debate in the Kenyan political and economic sphere, relevant not only at the national level but also having impact in rural areas where county governments were introduced through the 2010 constitution. However, few studies examine how corruption issue is socially constructed linguistically in print media. The study examines all reportage on corruption as a social issue in the Daily newspaper and the Standard Newspaper from February 2020 to February 2021. The study applied Fairclough’s (1989, 1990, 2001) Critical Discourse Analysis theoretical framework. The study employed analytical research design. The findings of the study revealed the use of linguistic elements that advance and amplify the reporting on corruption related issues. Such elements include the use of lexical items such as nouns and verbs, voice, epithets and indigenization. The results show that messages on corruption are framed in a persuasive manner to influence the readers and to evoke thoughts on this menace that has hardly affected the taxpayers. The study concludes that language is a powerful tool that newspaper writers use to influence the readers and to evoke thoughts on corruption that has hardly affected the taxpayers.

How Journalists and Civil Society View Gender Portrayal in Editorial Cartoons in Kenya’s Daily Nation and Standard Newspapers

Diverse views by scholars, policy makers as well as readers of newspapers and magazines, point to one critical issue that the media have of late become conduits for gender stereotyping not only in Kenya but the world over. This fact has been affirmed by public uproar against specific media houses in recent years after publishing cartoons that appeared offensive to sections of society. In some cases, such protests and reactions were very violent and claimed lives besides causing the destruction of property. Hinged on the Agenda setting theory, this paper refers to Kenya’s Daily Nation and Standard newspapers cartoon column in seeking to highlight what journalists and civil society consider to be the position of gender portrayed in editorial cartoons and whether by extension these cartoons subtly or unconsciously promote gender bias and stereotypical overtones. The qualitative case study was guided by the interpretivist philosophical paradigm. Besides the secondary data drawn from the two dailies, semi-structured interviews that targeted cartoonists, human rights, and gender activists from six purposely selected organizations were applied and analysed. The study finds bias and increased stereotypical overtones occasioned by a lack of resolve by the two media houses to adequately embrace gender sensitivity focus in the manner editorial cartoonists portray both men and women in the news. To cure the gender portrayal bias in the selected cartoons, there is need for specific in-housed editorial guidelines that will guide its creators.

The Nature of Gender Portrayal in Editorial Cartoons: Analysis of Kenya’s Daily Nation and Standard Newspapers

Visual images often have lasting memory with the capacity to reveal the anguish of a tormented soul. It can stimulate sexual passion as well as generate intense feelings and excitement to the level of driving people to the bravery and barbaric acts. These images evoke responses in people based on their interpretation of meanings informed by common beliefs and values. In most cases, the victims are subjected to gender-based humiliation in the public eye. This paper investigates the nature of gender portrayal through selected editorial cartoons. This study is anchored on the relativist/interpretivist philosophical paradigm in which a qualitative case study design is adopted. The case in reference is the Daily Nation and the Standard newspapers of Kenya’s Nation Media Group and Standard Group, respectively. Data was generated from sampled cartoons published by the two dailies. The data was complemented by semi-structured in-depth interviews targeting the cartoonists, human rights activists, and gender specialists from selected organizations in Kenya. In total, 252 cartoons out of 2184 which is 11.5 percent, were sampled systematically through a six-week purposive sampling mechanism. Each week represented a month amounting to three years in a row. The findings of the study revealed that men were negatively represented in most of the cartoons. Specifically, men were linked to greed, corruption, political violence, and land grabbing among other issues. On the other hand, women were mostly portrayed as weak, helpless, vulnerable, and most afflicted. In over 30 of the sampled cartoons, women were projected as sexual objects and agents of beauty. And yet in some though only a few, the very women were projected as the voice of reason and one that could be entrusted with leadership and integrity. This study reveals the bias and increased stereotypical overtones and the inability of the two newspapers to adequately embrace gender sensitivity in the way cartoons portray both men and women to their readers. Editors, reporters, and cartoonists should remove bias and stereotypes in their portrayal of both men and women. To this end, urgent retraining and sensitization on gender sensitivity cartooning are highly recommended for media practitioners. Specific editorial guidelines for cartoonists and mentoring of female journalists to become cartoonists are equally required to mitigate biased cartooning.

Mediatised “Statist Neoliberalism” in Kenya during the Time of Covid-19: The Case of the Standard

The Covid-19 (acronym for the coronavirus disease of 2019) pandemic negatively affected the world economy akin to the global financial crisis of 2008, leading to the revival of the debate about neoliberal rationalities. Although many nations attempted to contain the pandemic through a public goods approach, the authors argue that these state interventions concealed neoliberalism by advancing its governmentalities. Further, they use Norman Fairclough's (1992) interdiscursivity to describe how in Kenya, The Standard newspaper's coverage of the government interventions was dialogical, euphemising neoliberalism through content that seemed to advocate state welfarism while advocating for the free market at the same time. The interdiscursive analysis was enriched by using Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's (1985) concept of chains of equivalence and difference to explain the power relations behind the euphemisation of neoliberalism. The authors also argue that the invisible free-market mechanism becomes hegemonic when it takes over populist demands through the transformation of the chains of difference – the antagonism against neoliberalism – into chains of equivalence, the points of similarity between neoliberalism and people's welfare demands. For the current study, the authors selected articles on Covid-19 that appeared in the Standard, chiefly those written on policy issues and published during the early period of the pandemic. Two regular themes were analysed to illustrate the euphemisation of neoliberalism, namely, corruption watchdogism and unemployment narratives. The authors use interdiscursivity to illustrate how these two themes euphemise neoliberalism.

This study sought to investigate the complex relationship between journalistic activities and national security. The study answered the following questions: At what point should reporters put aside their professional and career interests for the sake of national security? Should press limits be self-imposed? What obligations do journalists have when it obtains information with national security implication?  The study used content analysis to measure these thematic areas. The analysis used 18 newspapers drawn randomly from publications by The Daily Nation and the standard newspapers in Kenya between October 2011 and February 2012. It searched for narratives that undermined government efforts to safe guard national security, caused fear among citizens and undermined the Kenya Defense forces efforts in fighting the Al-Shabaab. The study found out that 64% of the articles exposed government moves geared towards protecting Kenya’s national security, 37% caused fear among citizens by exposing the attacks to Al-Shabbab hence retaliation was eminent and 81% did not care about secrecy of information as they exposed crucial information from the government that could endanger Kenya’s national security. The study concluded that journalist should be trained on ethical reporting and guided on how their coverage can either salvage a national security crisis or make it worse.   Key words: Media, Journalism, National security.

Print media and functions of devolved governance in Kenya: A study of awareness creation among residents of Embakasi east sub county, Nairobi

During the campaigns for new constitutional dispensation in Kenya, the media played the role of informing and educating its audience about the struggle that led to the promulgation of the new laws in 2010. After the kick-off of the county governments' operations in 2013, the media had the task to inform and educate its audiences about the functions of the county governments. Therefore, this study assessed the role media, particularly print, played in creating awareness about these functions. Specifically, the study examined the extent to which Nation and Standard newspapers informed and educated their audiences about county governments' functions. The study covered five thematic areas representing the devolved functions, namely: health, water, education, transport, and lands. The study used a sequential mixed method design where qualitative and quantitative designs were combined in data collection. For quantitative data, questionnaires were administered. Analyses and presentations were done in the form of tables and texts. The study analysed the contents of these newspapers for qualitative data. Systematic Random sampling procedure was used to reach respondents, while a purposive sampling procedure was used to pick the required 208-weekend newspapers for 12 months for content analysis. The study was conducted in Embakasi East Sub County, Nairobi County, with 48 983 households. The research used Yamane’s formula to determine the sample size of 399 households. The study's key finding was that print media inform and educate residents of Embakasi East Sub County in Nairobi County about county governments' functions. The study is significant as it can promote Sustainable Development Goals’ tenet of peace, justice, and establishment of strong institutions.

Readership of Newspapers among the University Students at the wake of Covid-19 Pandemic in Nakuru County.

Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected the newspaper sector. Majority readers, especially among the students, have since opted to use social media, television, radio, and online for news updates. Most of the students avoid reading the newspaper due to fear of contracting the disease. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods of research designs. The quantitative design helped in identifying the readership magnitude of the hardcopy, online and broadcast versions before and after the Covid-19 pandemic while; the qualitative design helped identifying the causes of variation in magnitude in hardcopy newspaper readership. The study collected data from the primary source using a questionnaire with a sample of 50 respondents picked through convenience sampling method. The findings indicate that majority age of students interviewed ranged between 18-22 years and majority were male at 68% compared to female, 32%. Also, most students, 94%, read the newspapers before the outbreak of Covid-19. 56 percent of them preferred the Daily Nation, 24% the Standard Newspaper while the rest went for the Star, the Nairobian and other versions of print media. However, after the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, most students, 90%, feared reading the newspapers and instead 68% went for Facebook, 24% used twitter while 8% used other forms of social media for news update. In conclusion, the use of traditional media like television and radio is still common among the students. The study indicate that majority 58%, of students used television sets for news update, 24% used radio, 10% used online media while 8% used other forms of media.

Emergency journalism after a judicial closure

The employees of the only newspaper published entirely in Basque (Euskaldunon Egunkaria), shut down by a judicial order for alleged terrorist connections, managed to publish another newspaper (Egunero) the day after the police intervention (February 21, 2003), and continued publishing a daily issue for four months, until the foundation of a new standard newspaper in Basque (Berria). This study analyses how a group of former employees of a media organization, dispossessed of all its premises and economic funds, managed to publish a new temporary newspaper for four months, in the context of an uncertain judicial situation.

A Cognitive Analysis of meta phorical euphemisms of death In Kenyan Newspaper Obtuaries

This paper examines metaphorical euphemisms of death appearing in Kenyan newspaper using the theoretical framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory as initiated by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Obituaries are used to publicly announce death, giving details that can be used to identify the deceased. Thus, a cognitive approach enables us to demonstrate the mitigating capacity of metaphors used as a power fulsource for euphemistic reference. Specifically, this paper investigates metaphorical expressions for death found in Kenyan obituaries, and to which conceptual mappings do these expressions belong and the cognitive processes underlying death euphemisms. Drawing on a corpus of 100 randomly death obituaries collected from the Daily Nation, and the Standard newspaper, the study found that metaphors are used as a euphemistic device for speaking about this fear-based taboo and conceptual mappings of Death in Kenyan obituaries are to some extent culture-Specific. The study found that the social cultural perceptions that the society has towards death greatly influence the language used in the writing of obituaries.

The ghost in the news room: the legacy of Kenya’s 2007 post-election violence and the constraints on journalists covering Kenya’s 2013 General Election

ABSTRACTDomestic journalists covering Kenya’s 2013 General Election worked in an exceptionally challenging media environment; one which was significantly shaped by the 2007 election and post-election violence (PEV). Rooted in literature on peace journalism (PJ), we examine how the PEV of Kenya’s 2007 presidential elections informed and shaped journalists’ practice around the 2013 Kenyan General Election. The article is based on qualitative interviews with 16 Kenyan print journalists and editors at the Daily Nation and Standard newspapers as well as interviews with 6 Kenyan media specialists. Our analysis finds the 2007 PEV significantly constrained journalistic practice in three ways: first, journalists witnessed violence in 2007 which anchored their 2013 coverage; second, interviewees felt a ‘collective guilt’ at journalism’s failure to provide responsible coverage in 2007 creating a ‘culture of restraint’ and third, journalists felt compelled to ‘sanitize’ potentially inflammatory language creating a tension between journalists’ duty to inform and strong desire to avoid contributing to conflict. This article concludes by siding with a growing critical chorus of PJ scholars critiquing its often “individualist” approach and calling for greater attention towards structural factors such as perceived social constraints when conceptualizing and theorizing the agency of journalists working in post conflict environments.

A Content Analysis of the Leadership Styles of Steve Waugh and Sourav Ganguly: Leadership Lesson from the Game of Cricket

In this study, the researchers focus on the leadership styles of two of the game of Cricket’s most charismatic leaders of the twenty-first century – Steve Waugh of Australia and Sourav Ganguly of India in a bid to relate their styles with classic leadership theories. Both Waugh and Ganguly have been arguably recognized as the most successful cricket captains of their respective countries and have earned accolades from cricket pundits as brilliant leaders of men. In this study, a content analysis of the articles about these two legendary captains published in the highly-acclaimed Wisden almanac, electronic media such as Sportstar, Cricinfo Magazine and standard newspapers of India, Australia and other neutral countries was undertaken. The content analysis of eighty-seven articles spreading over a page length of 127 A-4 size papers revealed Waugh to be a more result-driven autocratic leader who led more by example, while Ganguly showed traits of a transformational leader who led by motivating his teammates. The study is expected to contribute to the existing body of leadership research with some new knowledge of the construct of leadership, which have been discussed at length in this paper.

YOUTH AND INDIGENISATION IN THE ZIMBABWEAN PRINT MEDIA

The main purpose of the indigenisation policy in Zimbabwe, according to Masunungure and Koga (2013), was to empower the historically disadvantaged groups in Zimbabwe after the nationalist government had recognised that the inherited colonial systems were unsustainable and a sure recipe for future social and political instability. Although the indigenisation policy was a very noble idea, there was no consensus – especially at the political level – on how empowerment was going to be achieved. The ruling party (ZANU-PF) saw empowerment as being best achieved through the compulsory takeover of foreign-owned businesses in order to benefit the indigenous blacks, and the main opposition party (MDC-T) perceived empowerment as the creation of more jobs for the multitudes of unemployed Zimbabweans, especially the youth. This article, however, argues that the use of nationalistic language, such as ‘the black majority’, in political discourse by politicians in most cases obscures who the real beneficiaries are or will be. In view of the above, the aim of this study is to critically explore, with the aid of framing theory, how the Zimbabwean print media have reported on the issue of youth and indigenisation in stories purposively sampled from The Herald, The Zimbabwean and The Standard newspapers.

Media coverage of major infrastructural projects

This paper examines the role of the media in portraying infrastructure projects in Kenya. The paper analyses print media and more specifically the main newspapers in Kenya- The Nation newspapers and The Standard newspapers published in a period of one calendar year; between January 1st 2014 and December 31st 2014.To establish which stories fall into infrastructure and related categories, the researchers identified keywords that were found in the story. These were transport, power, building and construction, telecommunication and water and sanitation. In order to understand how The Nation and The Standard newspapers primed infrastructure information. The paper looked at article placement, type of story, tone, article size, theme of article, focus, function and article prominence. It also looked at captions and graphics use. The research found that both newspapers had most of articles on infrastructure published in the inner pages leaving prime pages for other news, especially politics. Major infrastructure stories found their space on the cover page only when the President made a public address especially during Kenya’s public holidays. The study also found out that that infrastructure theme that was mostly covered was transport even as most of issues came from the government and the media only reported events as they unfolded-reactive reporting. In-depth analysis of infrastructure issues was not given emphasis. The reporters tended to only answer the elements of news; the 5Ws and H only. The impacts of the stories were not stressed nor were there investigative pieces on the subject. More space of prominence needs to be allocated to infrastructural development issues.

Media Priming of Road Traffic Accidents in Kenya

This article examines how the print media in Kenya reported road traffic accidents (RTAs). Using the priming theory, the article sought to identify the patterns of reporting and issues arising from such reporting of RTAs in the print media in Kenya. This is because the cost of RTAs in Kenya to the economy is estimated at Ksh. 14 billion per year. The study was a content analysis of two leading newspapers in Kenya— Daily Nation and the Standard newspapers. Data were collected using an analysis of the stories contained in the leading newspapers that related to RTAs. The content of 251 articles on RTAs was reviewed. A thematic analysis was done on the data which was then presented using simple tabular comparison of means, graphs, charts, and text. It was found that the newspapers play a significant role in passing on RTA information to the public, although a lot still needs to be done to address an obvious gap. Print media should improve its reportage of RTAs, the way it reports and primes it, and the amount of space allocated to stories on RTAs. Therefore, more space needs to be allocated to road safety issues even as all stakeholders should be encouraged to share information and opinions regarding road safety through the media. Information on RTAs and associated issues need to be published in prime pages regularly and not only when reporting on road crashes.

Fear Arousing Persuasive Communication: The Use of Threat and Coping Appraisal in Breast Cancer Messages

At present, breast cancer is having a severe effect in Kenya and it forms a serious threat to Kenyan women. In Kenya, breast cancer is the most common reproductive organ cancer which contributed 23% of all female cancers with one out of every nine women being diagnosed with advanced breast cancer (Neondo, 2006). According to the regional cancer registry at Kenya Medical Research Institute, about 80% of reported cases of cancer in Kenya are diagnosed at advanced stages, when very little can be achieved in terms of curative treatment (Musimbi, 2008). In Kenya, breast self examination is one of the interventions recommended by the government. Statistics however indicate that very few women engage in BSE despite widespread awareness campaigns by various stakeholders. This study sought to establish whether the breast cancer media messages are fear appeal theory based in their design in order to motivate breast screening, using the protection motivation theory. Content analysis was used to examine print media articles for threat and coping appraisal. The study examined all breast cancer print media articles in the Daily Nation newspaper, The Standard newspaper and the Parents magazine for the month of October 2012 and October 2013. Out of 250 messages analyzed, there was 60% severity, 23.2% vulnerability, 9.6% self efficacy and 7.2% response efficacy. The results of the study were intended to assist message designers to come
