Benchmark Investigation of SCC-DFTB Against Standard DFT to Model Phononic Properties in Two-Dimensional MOFs for Thermoelectric Applications.

Despite the importance of modeling lattice thermal conductivity in predicting thermoelectric (TE) properties, computational data on heat transport, especially from first-principles, in 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remain limited due to the high computational cost. To address this, we provide a benchmark of the performance of semiempirical self-consistent-charge density functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) methods against density functional theory (DFT) for monolayer, serrated, AA-stacked and/or AB-stacked Zn3C6O6, Cd3C6O6, Zn-NH-MOF, and Ni3(HITP)2 MOFs. Harmonic lattice dynamics calculations, including partial atomic contributions to phonon dispersions, are evaluated with both SCC-DFTB and DFT, whereas anharmonic transport (i.e., thermal conductivity) is evaluated with SCC-DFTB only. Our findings further suggest that unlike the other stacking geometries modeled, serrated Zn3C6O6, serrated Zn-NH-MOF, and wavy serrated Ni3(HITP)2 represent stable geometries. While Zn3C6O6 and Zn-NH-MOF exhibit a higher power factor than Ni3(HITP)2 (as found in our previous work), Zn-NH-MOF shows lower thermal conductivity, resulting in the highest thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) among the studied MOFs.

Bandgap Characteristics of Boron-Containing Nitrides—Ab Initio Study for Optoelectronic Applications

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is recognized as a 2D wide bandgap material with unique properties, such as effective photoluminescence and diverse lattice parameters. Nitride alloys containing h-BN have the potential to revolutionize the electronics and optoelectronics industries. The energy band structures of three boron-containing nitride alloys—BxAl1−xN, BxGa1−xN, and BxIn1−xN—were calculated using standard density functional theory (DFT) with the hybrid Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof (HSE) function to correct lattice parameters and energy gaps. The results for both wurtzite and hexagonal structures reveal several notable characteristics, including a wide range of bandgap values, the presence of both direct and indirect bandgaps, and phase mixing between wurtzite and hexagonal structures. The hexagonal phase in these alloys is observed at very low and very high boron concentrations (x), as well as in specific atomic configurations across the entire composition range. However, cohesive energy calculations show that the hexagonal phase is more stable than the wurtzite phase only when x > 0.5, regardless of atomic arrangement. These findings provide practical guidance for optimizing the epitaxial growth of boron-containing nitride thin films, which could drive future advancements in electronics and optoelectronics applications.

Cavity Born-Oppenheimer approximation for molecules and materials via electric field response.

We present an abinitio method for computing vibro-polariton and phonon-polariton spectra of molecules and solids coupled to the photon modes of optical cavities. We demonstrate that if interactions of cavity photon modes with both nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom are treated on the level of the cavity Born-Oppenheimer approximation, spectra can be expressed in terms of the matter response to electric fields and nuclear displacements, which are readily available in standard density functional perturbation theory implementations. In this framework, results over a range of cavity parameters can be obtained without the need for additional electronic structure calculations, enabling efficient calculations on a wide range of parameters. Furthermore, this approach enables results to be more readily interpreted in terms of the more familiar cavity-independent molecular electric field response properties, such as polarizability and Born effective charges, which enter into the vibro-polariton calculation. Using corresponding electric field response properties of bulk insulating systems, we are also able to obtain the Γ point phonon-polariton spectra of two dimensional (2D) insulators. Results for a selection of cavity-coupled molecular and 2D crystal systems are presented to demonstrate the method.

Hyperdensity Functional Theory of Soft Matter.

We present a scheme for investigating arbitrary thermal observables in spatially inhomogeneous equilibrium many-body systems. Extending the grand canonical ensemble yields any given observable as an explicit hyperdensity functional. Associated local fluctuation profiles follow from an exact hyper-Ornstein-Zernike equation. While the local compressibility and simple observables permit analytic treatment, complex order parameters are accessible via simulation-based supervised machine learning of neural hyperdirect correlation functionals. We exemplify efficient and accurate neural predictions for the cluster statistics of hard rods, square-well rods, and hard spheres. The theory allows one to treat complex observables, as is impossible in standard density functional theory.

Cr and Mn doping AgNbO3 for high Curie temperature ferromagnetic half-metals

The alterations in the electronic and magnetic properties of AgNbO3 induced by Cr and Mn doping at two concentrations (6% and 14%) are investigated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT), both with and without the Hubbard correction (U) as well as HSE method. Half-metallic ferromagnetic behavior with 100% polarization is observed for all dopants. Double exchange coupling is the mechanism responsible for the ferromagnetic interaction in these materials. Our results also indicates that the correction with U-term and HSE method provide consistent values that closely align with experimental measurements, and significantly improve the standard DFT description. Finally, the value of the Curie temperature, which reaches 425.49 (K), exceeds the ambient temperature, revealing the potential use of this doped material for new spintronic devices.

Multiconfigurational Correlation at DFT + U Cost: On-Site Electron-Electron Interactions Yield a Block-Localized Configuration Interaction Hamiltonian.

This work presents a first-principles wavefunction-in-DFT approach based on the Hubbard density functional theory (DFT) + U method. This approach begins with the standard DFT reference system of noninteracting electrons and introduces an electron-electron interaction projected onto DFT+U-type atomic states. The reference system's configuration interaction Hamiltonian is block-localized to these states and can be expressed in terms of state occupation numbers, state self-energies (which correspond to unscreened Hubbard U values), and the promotion energies of doubly excited Slater determinants. Simple approximations for the promotion energies provide multiconfigurational correlation energies without requiring explicit orbital localization/transform. Numerical results for fractionally occupied chromium atom, bonded chromium dimer, dissociating covalent bonds, and large active spaces show that the approach provides beyond-zero-sum accuracy at computational cost comparable to standard DFT+U.

Strain-induced changes of electronic and optical properties of Zr-based MXenes

Zr-based MXenes recently attracted attention because of its experimental preparation showing temperature stability, mechanical strength, and promising energy, sensoric, and electrochemistry applications. However, necessary theoretical predictions at a precise/predictive level are complicated due to essential excitonic features and strong electron correlation (i.e., a necessity to go beyond standard density functional theory, DFT). Contrary to the prevailing focus on oxygen-terminated MXenes and standard predictions of other Zr-based MXenes as conductors, based on the hybrid DFT and GW many-body perturbational theory, we were able to find seven different semiconductors (five of them for their equilibrium geometry and two others under slight tensile biaxial strain) in the case of two- and three-layered Zr2CT2 and Zr3C2T2 configurations with various terminations (T = O, F, S, Cl). We observed semiconductor-to-conductor transition induced by strain in the majority of such Zr-based MXenes at an experimentally achievable strain range. Furthermore, using the Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE), we demonstrated that selected semiconducting Zr-based MXenes possess high optical absorption efficiency (20%–30%) in the visible light range, underscoring their potential in photonic applications. The high sensitivity of Zr-based MXenes to external conditions and functionalization combined with the thermal stability makes the materials promising for applications at operational temperatures in electronic and optical technologies.

Going for Gold(-Standard): Attaining Coupled Cluster Accuracy in Oxide-Supported Nanoclusters.

The structure of oxide-supported metal nanoclusters plays an essential role in their sharply enhanced catalytic activity over that of bulk metals. Simulations provide the atomic-scale resolution needed to understand these systems. However, the sensitive mix of metal-metal and metal-support interactions, which govern their structure, puts stringent requirements on the method used, requiring calculations beyond standard density functional theory (DFT). The method of choice is coupled cluster theory [specifically CCSD(T)], but its computational cost has so far prevented its application to these systems. In this work, we showcase two approaches to make CCSD(T) accuracy readily achievable in oxide-supported nanoclusters. First, we leverage the SKZCAM protocol to provide the first benchmarks of oxide-supported nanoclusters, revealing that it is specifically metal-metal interactions that are challenging to capture with DFT. Second, we propose a CCSD(T) correction (ΔCC) to the metal-metal interaction errors in DFT, reaching accuracy comparable to that of the SKZCAM protocol at significantly lower cost. This approach forges a path toward studying larger systems at reliable accuracy, which we highlight by identifying a ground-state structure in agreement with experiments for Au20 on MgO, a challenging system where DFT models have yielded conflicting predictions.

Highly tunable ground and excited state excitonic dipoles in multilayer 2H-MoSe2

The fundamental properties of an exciton are determined by the spin, valley, energy, and spatial wavefunctions of the Coulomb-bound electron and hole. In van der Waals materials, these attributes can be widely engineered through layer stacking configuration to create highly tunable interlayer excitons with static out-of-plane electric dipoles, at the expense of the strength of the oscillating in-plane dipole responsible for light-matter coupling. Here we show that interlayer excitons in bi- and tri-layer 2H-MoSe2 crystals exhibit electric-field-driven coupling with the ground (1s) and excited states (2s) of the intralayer A excitons. We demonstrate that the hybrid states of these distinct exciton species provide strong oscillator strength, large permanent dipoles (up to 0.73 ± 0.01 enm), high energy tunability (up to ~200 meV), and full control of the spin and valley characteristics such that the exciton g-factor can be manipulated over a large range (from −4 to +14). Further, we observe the bi- and tri-layer excited state (2s) interlayer excitons and their coupling with the intralayer excitons states (1s and 2s). Our results, in good agreement with a coupled oscillator model with spin (layer)-selectivity and beyond standard density functional theory calculations, promote multilayer 2H-MoSe2 as a highly tunable platform to explore exciton-exciton interactions with strong light-matter interactions.

Benchmark Investigation of SCC-DFTB against Standard and Hybrid DFT to Model Electronic Properties in Two-Dimensional MOFs for Thermoelectric Applications.

Recent studies have shown that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential as thermoelectric materials, and the topic has received increasing attention. The main motivation for this project is to further our knowledge of thermoelectric properties in MOFs and find which available self-consistent-charge density functional tight binding (SCC-DFTB) method can best predict (at least trends in) the electronic properties of MOFs at a lower computational cost than standard density functional theory (DFT). In this work, the electronic properties of monolayer, serrated, AA-stacked, and/or AB-stacked Zn3C6O6, Cd3C6O6, Zn-NH-MOF─for which no previous calculations of thermoelectric performance exist─and Ni3(HITP)2 MOFs are modeled with DFT-PBE, DFT-HSE06, GFN1-xTB, GFN2-xTB, and DFTB-3ob/mio. The band structures, density of states, and their relative orbital contributions, as well as the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and power factor, are compared across methods and geometries. Our results suggest that GFN-xTB is adequate to predict the MOFs' band structure shape and density of states but not band gap. Our calculations further indicate that Zn3C6O6, Cd3C6O6, and Zn-NH-MOF have higher power factor values than Ni3(HITP)2, one of the highest performing synthesized MOFs, and are therefore promising for thermoelectric applications.

Density Functional Theory Study of the Spin-Orbit Insulating Phase in SnTe Cubic Nanowires: Implications for Topological Electronics.

We investigate the electronic, structural, and topological properties of the SnTe and PbTe cubic nanowires using ab initio calculations. Using standard and linear-scale density functional theory, we go from the ultrathin limit up to the nanowire thicknesses observed experimentally. Finite-size effects in the ultrathin limit produce an electric quadrupole and associated structural distortions; these distortions increase the band gap, but they get reduced with the size of the nanowires and become less and less relevant. Ultrathin SnTe cubic nanowires are trivial band gap insulators; we demonstrate that by increasing the thickness, there is an electronic transition to a spin-orbit insulating phase due to trivial surface states in the regime of thin nanowires. These trivial surface states with a spin-orbit gap of a few meV appear at the same k-point of the topological surface states. Going to the limit of thick nanowires, we should observe the transition to the topological crystalline insulator phase with the presence of two massive surface Dirac fermions hybridized with the persistent trivial surface states. Therefore, we have the copresence of massive Dirac surface states and trivial surface states close to the Fermi level in the same region of the k-space. According to our estimation, the cubic SnTe nanowires are trivial insulators below the critical thickness tc1 = 10 nm, and they become spin-orbit insulators between tc1 = 10 nm and tc2 = 17 nm, while they transit to the topological phase above the critical thickness of tc2 = 17 nm. These critical thickness values are in the range of typical experimental thicknesses, making the thickness a relevant parameter for the synthesis of topological cubic nanowires. Pb1-xSnxTe nanowires would have both these critical thicknesses tc1 and tc2 at larger values depending on the doping concentration. We discuss the limitations of density functional theory in the context of topological nanowires and the consequences of our results on topological electronics.

Qualitative ab initio theory of magnetic and atomic ordering in FeNi

Magnetic and atomic ordering in equiatomic FeNi alloy is studied by different techniques and methods based on density functional theory in order to clarify the main driving forces and their interplay behind these transitions and possibility of their accurate description within standard density functional theory calculations. The Curie temperature is obtained in Monte Carlo simulations using magnetic exchange interactions obtained by applying the magnetic force theorem within multiple scattering theory for different magnetic and atomic configurational states, including account for the thermal atomic displacements and exchange-correlation potential. The calculations show a very strong sensitivity of the results upon exchange-correlation potential, atomic order, and thermal atomic displacements. The calculated Curie temperature of a completely random alloy with the account of thermal lattice displacement is at least about 200 K below the known experimental data (780–800 K) depending on the above mentioned factors. The atomic order-disorder transition temperature is determined from effective chemical interactions, which apart from the chemical contribution (on the ideal fcc lattice) include contributions from lattice thermal vibrations and local lattice relaxations. The effective chemical interactions are strongly affected by the magnetic state, so the order-disorder transition temperature changes between 1000 and 140 K in the fully ordered ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, respectively. For the reduced magnetization 0.7 (close to the experimental order-disorder transition temperature at 600 K), the order-disorder transition temperature varies between 550 and 700 K depending mostly on the exchange-correlation potential. How La substitute doping affects the magnetic properties of the 2-14-1 magnets (Ce1-xLax)2Fe14B: Standard DFT and DFT + U studies

We investigated different amounts of La doping on the magnetic characterizations of the (Ce1-xLax)2Fe14B (x = 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5, 0.625, 0.75, 0.875, 1) structures using standard density functional theory (DFT) and DFT plus U (DFT + U) methods. Substitutions of Ce atoms by La atoms increased the magnetic moment of Fe atoms. The absolute values of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) calculated by standard DFT method gradually decreased with increasing amounts of La doping, while the MAE using DFT + U method exhibited non-monotonic dependence on La concentration. The optimal magnetic performance occurred within the range of x = 0.25 to 0.375. The DOS showed that the rare earth atomic magnetic moments were in the opposite direction to the magnetic moments of the Fe atoms, and the f-orbital electronic states of Ce atoms predicted by DFT + U method were generally larger than that predicted by standard DFT method.

Electronic structure of Ta2O5 polymorphs: Variation trend of band gap and the role of oxygen vacancies

We provide a systematic study on the electronic structure of a series of Ta2O5 polymorphs using standard density functional theory (DFT) calculations as well as the more accurate many-body perturbation theory within the GW approximation. For the defect-free polymorphs, the variation trend of band gap can be microscopically related to the strength of orbital hybridization, and to the macroscopic bulk formation energy. The presence of oxygen vacancies is found to have profound effects on the electronic properties near the Fermi level, notably the reduction of band gap and gap closure (insulator-to-metal transition). Furthermore, depending on the vacancy sites, the band gap of some defective system may be enlarged with comparison to its defect-free counterpart. Such an anomalous behavior originates from the unexpected formation of Ta–Ta bonds.

AFLOW-CCE for the thermodynamics of ionic materials.

Accurate thermodynamic stability predictions enable data-driven computational materials design. Standard density functional theory (DFT) approximations have limited accuracy with average errors of a few hundred meV/atom for ionic materials, such as oxides and nitrides. Thus, insightful correction schemes as given by the coordination corrected enthalpies (CCE) method, based on an intuitive parametrization of DFT errors with respect to coordination numbers and cation oxidation states, present a simple, yet accurate solution to enable materials stability assessments. Here, we illustrate the computational capabilities of our AFLOW-CCE software by utilizing our previous results for oxides and introducing new results for nitrides. The implementation reduces the deviations between theory and experiment to the order of the room temperature thermal energy scale, i.e., ∼25 meV/atom. The automated corrections for both materials classes are freely available within the AFLOW ecosystem via the AFLOW-CCE module, requiring only structural inputs.

Orbital-free quasidensity functional theory

We develop an functional framework to compute one-body quasiprobabilities for both fermionic and bosonic systems. Since the key variable is a quasidensity, this theory circumvents the problems of finding the Pauli potential or approximating the kinetic energy that are known to limit the applicability of standard orbital-free density functional theory. We present a set of strategies to (a) compute the one-body Wigner quasiprobability in an orbital-free manner from the knowledge of the universal functional and (b) obtain those functionals from the functionals of the one-body reduced density matrix (1-RDM). We find that the universal functional of optical lattices results from a translation, a contraction, and a rotation of the corresponding functional of the 1-RDM, revealing the strong connection between these two functional theories. Variational Pair-Density Functional Theory: Dealing with Strong Correlation at the Protein Scale.

Multiconfigurational pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) offers a promising solution to the challenges faced by traditional density functional theory (DFT) in addressing molecular systems containing transition metals, open-shells, or strong correlations in general. By utilizing both the density and on-top pair-density, MC-PDFT can make use of a more flexible multiconfigurational wave function to capture the necessary static correlation, while the pair-density functional also includes the effect of dynamic correlation. So far, MC-PDFT has been used after a multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) step, using the orbitals and configuration interaction coefficients from the converged MCSCF wave function to compute PDFT energies and properties. Here, instead, we propose to perform a direct optimization of the wave function using the pair-density functionals, resulting in a variational formulation of MC-PDFT. We derive the expressions for the wave function gradient and illustrate their similarity to standard MCSCF equations. Furthermore, we illustrate the accuracy on a set of singlet-triplet gaps as well as dissociation curves. Our findings highlight one of MC-PDFT's standout features: a reduced dependency on the active space size compared to conventional multiconfigurational wave function methodologies. Additionally, we show that the computational cost of MC-PDFT is potentially lower than MCSCF and often on-par with standard Kohn-Sham DFT, which is demonstrated by performing a MC-PDFT calculation of the entire ferredoxin protein with 1447 atoms and nearly 12000 basis functions.

Introducing the embedded random phase approximation: H2 dissociative adsorption on Cu(111) as an exemplar

The random phase approximation (RPA) as a means of treating electron correlation recently has been shown to outperform standard density functional theory (DFT) approximations in a variety of cases. However, the computational cost of the RPA is substantially more than DFT, especially when aiming to study extended surfaces. Properly accounting for sufficient surface ensemble size, Brillouin zone sampling, and vacuum separation of periodic images in standard periodic-planewave-based DFT code raises the cost to achieve converged results. Here, we show that sub-system embedding schemes enable use of the RPA for modeling heterogeneous reactions at reduced computational cost. We explore two different embedded RPA (emb-RPA) approaches, periodic emb-RPA and cluster emb-RPA. We use the (experimentally and theoretically) well-studied H2 dissociative adsorption on Cu(111) as our exemplar, and first perform full periodic RPA calculations as a benchmark. The full RPA results match well the semi-empirical barrier fit to experimental observables and others derived from high-level computations, e.g., from recent embedded n-electron valence second order perturbation theory [Zhao et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput. 16(11), 7078–7088 (2020)] and quantum Monte Carlo [Doblhoff-Dier et al., J. Chem. Theory Comput. 13(7), 3208–3219 (2017)] simulations. Among the two emb-RPA approaches tested, the cluster emb-RPA accurately reproduces the energy profile (maximum error of 50 meV along the reaction pathway) while reducing the computational cost by approximately two orders of magnitude. We therefore expect that the embedded cluster approach will enable wider RPA implementation in heterogeneous catalysis.

Acid-activated natural zeolite and montmorillonite as adsorbents decomposing metsulfuron-methyl herbicide

Modern technologies of intensive crop production demand a wide application of various types of pesticides. The adverse effect of cropping intensification is that toxic organic compounds, in particular herbicides of the sulfonylurea family, are accumulated in the soil. The herbicide metsulfuron-methyl is soluble in water and accumulates in soil moisture, causing a toxic effect on plant development. The work examines the issue of the chemical stability of metsulfuron-methyl in a model aqueous environment for the targeted selection of a mineral that adsorbs the herbicide and simultaneously catalyzes the process of herbicide hydrolysis. Degradation processes of sulfonylurea herbicide metsulfuron-methyl in aqueous media in the presence of natural zeolite, acid-activated natural zeolite, and montmorillonite К10 were investigated. Under conditions of static contact of the adsorbents with an herbicide aqueous solution, montmorillonite was more active in the sorption and degradation of metsulfuron-methyl. During the first 1–2 days the herbicide concentration decreased by a factor of 5. An almost complete degradation of metsulfuron-methyl in aqueous dispersions of the acid-activated zeolite and montmorillonite was attained within 20 days. Pore size distribution functions (Barrett-Joyner-Halenda and standard non-local density functional theory methods) were evaluated. The acid treatment of the natural zeolite changed its porous structure - its specific surface area grew by a factor of 5. Three fractions of mesopores 4–10, 10–20, 20–30 nm were revealed in the original zeolite, and one fraction of pores 2.0–3.5 nm was found in the acid-activated zeolite. In the montmorillonite, only one group of 3–15 nm pores was detected. Studies of structural changes in natural zeolite after acid modification were carried out using the methods of X-ray fluorescence and X-ray phase analysis, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The acid-activated montmorillonite and natural zeolite show promise for land reclamation work on detoxification of soils contaminated by sulfonylurea herbicides.

All electron GW with linearized augmented plane waves for metals and semiconductors

GW approximation is one of the most popular parameter-free many-body methods that go beyond the limitations of the standard density functional theory (DFT) to determine the excitation spectra for moderately correlated materials and in particular the semiconductors. It is also the first step in developing the diagrammatic Monte Carlo method into an electronic structure tool, which would offer a numerically exact solution to the solid-state problem. While most electronic structure packages offer support for GW calculations for band-insulating materials, the level of support for metallic systems is somewhat limited. This limitation can be partly attributed to the relatively minor differences often observed between GW and DFT results in treating metallic systems, which is not expected to persist to higher orders in perturbation theory. Describing metals within the GW framework presents a challenge, as it requires accurate resolution of Fermi surface singularities, which, in turn, calls for a dense momentum mesh. Here we implement the GW algorithm within the all-electron Linear Augmented Plane Wave framework, where we pay special attention to the metallic systems, the convergence with respect to momentum mesh, and proper treatment of the deep laying core states, as needed for the future variational diagrammatic Monte Carlo implementation. Our improved algorithm for resolving Fermi surface singularities allows us a stable and accurate analytic continuation of imaginary axis data, which is carried out for GW excitation spectra throughout the Brillouin zone in both the metallic and insulating materials and is compared to numerically more stable contour deformation integration technique. We compute band structures for elemental metallic systems Li, Na, and Mg as well as for various narrow and wide bandgap insulators such as Si, BN, SiC, MgO, LiF, ZnS, and CdS and compare our results with previous GW calculations and available experiments data. Our results are in good agreement with the available literature. Thus our software allows users to compute full bandstructures for metals and insulators using all-electron potential without downfolding to Wannier orbital basis.
