RADICAL STERNO- COSTAL RESECTION OF SKIN TUMOR AND IMMEDIATE RECONSTRUCTION: A CASE REPORT

Purpose: We managed a 30 years old male Albino with Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Sternum with local deep invasion to the Pleura with the aim of offering a cure.Methodology: Information of the patient from the medical records showed a 30-year-old Albino (Fitzpatrick Skin type I) who was exposed to tropical sun rays for about three decades before presenting with 1-year history of locally advanced sternal skin basal cell carcinoma. This was resected five times in another teaching hospital, but the fungating lesion recurred locally after each attempted local wide excision.Result: He was found to have 18cm x 22cm malignant ulcer which penetrate over the manubrium and middle of the sternum. It also extended bilaterally to cover the anterior ribs and costochondral joints though his general condition was stable.Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: After detailed investigations and obtaining an informed consent, he had a radical en-bloc resection of the tumor: including the involved sternum and the affected anterior part of the affected pleura. Full thickness reconstruction of the anterior chest wall was done with marlex methacrylate mesh and steel wire support, obliteration of dead space, soft tissue cover with latissimus dorsi pedicle musculocutaneous flap with satisfactory outcome. The use of Stainless wires in our chest reconstruction provided a simpler and cheaper alternative to the use of advanced Tridimensional titanium printed custom made prosthesis, and less morbidity to alternative use of autologous ribs.

Development of Metallic Contaminant Inspection System Using High-Tc rf-SQUID for Li-ion Battery Liquid Components

The use of a high-Tc (HTS) rf-superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) for inspecting the liquid component of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is proposed. It is possible that a small amount of metal can become mixed in with components of Li-ion batteries during the manufacturing process and contaminate them, with a resultant fire risk, Thus, the development of a highly sensitive inspection system is required. In this article we describe a test system, we developed using a single channel HTS rf-SQUID consisting of a cryostat, a polyethylene tube, and a permanent magnet. The SQUID needs to be installed as close to the battery liquid as possible to obtain more sensitive readings. Therefore, we designed a microscope-type SQUID cryostat in which the SQUID can approach the target as close as 1 mm. In the system, the liquid was not flowed through the polyethylene tube, but a small metallic sample stack on a fishing line was moved by a motor. A stainless steel cut wire with a nominal size of φ 50 μm was prepared. After magnetizing the sample, the stray magnetic field of the sample was measured by the SQUID. The peak-to-peak signal scaled inversely with the cube of the stand-off distance. It was found that a signal of the sample with φ 50 μm at a distance of 26 mm could be detected if the signal-to-noise ratio ( SNR ) > 3 was supposed as the threshold of the inspection. The dependence on the sample size was also investigated, using stainless steel samples with different sizes (φ 50–φ 160 μm). The peak-to-peak signal scaled with the cube of the diameter.

Laser Welding on Cerclage Wire Joining in Femur Surgery

Stainless steel wires with fiber-laser welding on lap joints are first proposed in this study to be used as cerclage wire joints for modern femur surgery, because of their potentially larger joint strength and less loosening failure than traditional joint devices. In this feasibility study, an experiment was set up to determine adequate parameters for the laser welding process in order to ensure that the wire joint of cerclage has good weld appearance, free oxidation, and suitable joint strength. A stainless steel wire 316L with a diameter of 1.6 mm, flare-welded on lap joint was used in the experiment as a specimen cerclage wire joint. Two major effective parameters were chosen for controlling a suitable fusion weld, including charge voltage and multiple frequencies of the laser irradiation. The adequate area of the laser parameters was determined from the experiment, including the ranges of charge voltage, multiple frequencies, and pulse width. The suitable welded lengths of specimens were also studied in the mechanical test to validate the joint strength. Suggested welded length has a better tensile strength than traditional cerclage joints. The paper concludes that the stainless wire joints with a fiber laser weld represents a promising alternative to traditional cerclage joint devices for modern femur surgery.

Mechanisms underlining excitatory synaptic plasticity in the Nucleus Tractus Solitarii following Cardiovascular Deconditioning

The nucleus tractus solitarii (nTS) is a critical central region for autonomic control and integration of cardiovascular reflexes. Neuroplasticity in nTS contributes to several cardiovascular dysfunctions. Our previous data showed that Hindlimb‐unloading (HU), a well‐established model of cardiovascular deconditioning in rats, increases glutamatergic neurotransmission yet reduces the excitability of nTS neurons. In this study we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlining these alterations. For this purpose, stainless wire rings were placed in the tail of male Sprague‐Dawley rats (3 weeks). After one week of recovery the rings was connected to a suspension apparatus and rats were suspended at an angle of 30–35° for two weeks with free access to food and water. Control animals were maintained in normal postural conditions. After the HU protocol, coronal brainstem slices were generated and the whole‐cell patch clamp technique was performed to evaluate the synaptic neurotransmission and electrophysiological properties of nTS neurons. Compared to control rats, HU increased the amplitude of excitatory postsynaptic currents evoked by afferent tractus solitarii stimulus (TS‐EPSC). The addition of a NMDA receptor antagonist (AP5, 10 μM) significantly reduced TS‐EPSC amplitude in HU but not controls. Despite the increase in glutamatergic inputs, the neurons of HU vs control rats are hyperpolarized and have decreased excitability. The block of both NMDA and non‐NMDA (NBQX, 10 μM) glutamatergic receptors did not affect these parameters. However, in the presence of a GABAA receptor antagonist (Gabazine, 25 μM) the resting membrane potential depolarized and excitability of HU neurons were comparable to neurons from control rats. The results indicate that HU increases TS‐EPSC amplitude via a NMDA receptor component. Furthermore, the decreased excitability and hyperpolarized membrane is associated with enhanced GABAergic modulation to these neurons. Comparison of static friction and surface topography of low friction and conventional TMA orthodontic arch wires: An in-vitro study

BackgroundArch wire surface characteristics, especially surface roughness and topography, influence the coefficient of friction during sliding. The clinician should be familiar with the properties of orthodontic appliances and materials that could result in high friction to maximize the efficiency of treatment. This study aimed to compare the static friction of orthodontic arch wire materials, including a newly introduced low-friction TMA, conventional TMA, and stainless steel arch wires, using an Instron universal testing machine and to evaluate their surface topographical features using a noncontact optical profilometer. MethodsA total of 30 arch wire specimens were used, including 10 low-friction TMA (TMA-Low), 10 conventional TMA (TMA-C), and 10 stainless steel (SS), (Ormco, Orange, CA, USA) measuring 0.016 × 0.022 in. The static frictional force of each arch wire material was measured using the universal Instron machine. The surface topography was evaluated using a noncontact profilometer machine. ResultsThe static frictional resistance forces were highest in the TMA-C alloy group, and the value was statistically significant in comparison to the SS arch wire but not to the TMA-Low arch wire. The mean value of the static friction of the TMA-Low group was intermediate between the TMA-C and SS arch wires. However, this difference was statistically insignificant compared to the other two alloys. A surface roughness evaluation using a profilometer machine revealed that the highest mean of all three roughness parameters was found in the TMA-C group, followed by the TMA-Low and SS arch wires in descending order. ConclusionThe static friction resistance forces and surface roughness values of the TMA-Low arch wire are comparable to those of TMA-C but are still considered inferior to those of the SS arch wire.

Improvement of binding friction between stainless steel orthodontic wire and bracket by performing Rh-PTFE composite plating on the wire

ABSTRACT Purpose: During orthodontic treatment, it is important to ensure that the least frictional force is applied to the teeth to ensure optimal tooth movement. We applied electrolytic rhodium-polytetrafluoroethylene (Rh-PTFE) composite plating to stainless steel (SS) orthodontic wires with the aim of suppressing friction and corrosion in the wire and facilitating the longevity of treatment. Materials and methods: SS orthodontic wires were plated with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particle suspended solution. The surface colour was changed to black with Rh-PTFE plating, and a homogeneous distribution of PTFE particles was observed in the plated layer using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: The friction of Rh-PTFE plated wire with the SS bracket decreased to ½ to 1/3rd of the original force by increasing the PTFE content in the plated layer, despite the increase in surface roughness with plating. Corrosion suppression was also observed when Rh-PTFE plating was applied to a nickel wire. Conclusion: Ensuring smooth movement between the wire and bracket decreases the risk of metal dissolution, which can be effectively be achieved with Rh-PTFE plating. This finding will significantly assist orthodontists in choosing plated wires to ensure a more effective course of treatment for their patients in the future.

Tensile properties and microstructural features of 304L austenitic stainless steel produced by wire-and-arc additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained great importance in the recent development to produce metallic structural elements for civil engineering applications. However, research effort has been focused mainly on powder-based processes, while there is still limited knowledge concerning the structural response of wire-and-arc additive manufactured (WAAM) metallic elements, and very few experimental data concerning their mechanical properties. This paper presents the first results of a wide experimental campaign aimed at assessing the mechanical properties of WAAM plates produced using a commercial ER308LSi stainless steel welding wire. The aim is to evaluate the effect of the orientation in the tensile behavior of planar elements considering specimens extracted along three different directions with respect to the deposition layer: transversal direction (T), longitudinal direction (L), and diagonal direction (D). Compositional, microstructural, and fractographic analyses were carried out to relate the specific microstructural features induced by WAAM to the mechanical properties. The results show that the chemical composition of the plates meets the requirements of UNS-S-30403 for an AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel. The as-built samples were substantially defect-free and characterized by a very fine microstructure of γ and δ phases The fineness of the microstructure and the negligible defect content led to values of tensile strength and elongation to failure in line with the traditionally manufactured stainless steel elements. Anisotropy in the tensile properties between T, L, and D specimens was observed, and the highest elastic and plastic properties were measured in D specimens. This result is related to the crystallographic and mechanical fibering induced by the additive process, that led also, in case of D samples, to the highest density of cell boundaries, obstacles to the dislocation slip, located at 45° with respect to the loading direction, where plastic deformation preferentially occurs.

In-Situ High-Energy X-ray Diffraction During a Linear Deposition of 308 Stainless Steel via Wire Arc Additive Manufacture

Adoption of metal additive manufacturing (AM) components in property-critical applications requires predictable performance of fabricated metal AM parts. In-situ diagnostics coupled with material models provide a pathway for qualification of AM whereby a prime objective is to capture data that inform or validate models or theory. Part of this is to understand the solidification and cooling of the material through diagnostics in order to ensure the part is being built correctly and that microstructures and properties are predictable. We have utilized high-energy X-ray diffraction to provide a unique probe for bulk material characterization in-situ during additive manufacture. The current work is focused on presenting the opportunities and potential pitfalls associated with extracting microstructural information from diffraction data that is necessarily limited due to the dynamic nature of the process. We present diffraction measurements and Rietveld refinement of stainless steel wire-arc line depositions using 71 keV X-rays, providing information on temperature, phase evolution, and residual stress during the deposition of a single-layer of 308L stainless filler wire on a 304L stainless steel substrate. In addition to observing both the liquid/solid and solid-state phase transformations, this methodology can be used to map the extent of the melt pool, identify thermal gradients, and measure residual stresses in materials during deposition.

Practical Investigation of FSS (AISI 430) Weldments Welded by Pulse MIG Welding Process

Ferritic stainless steels are iron-chromium alloys having chromium content usually in the range of 10.5–27%. In these steels the predominant metallurgical phase present is ferrite. These steels are Fe-Cr-C alloys with sufficient chromium or chromium plus other ferrite stabilizer, such as aluminium, niobium, molybdenum, titanium, used to inhibit the formation of austenite phase on heating. Ferritic stainless steel (FSS) is generally considered to have poor weldability when compared to austenitic stainless steel (ASS) but has recently drawn greater attention owing to their lower costs and better resistance to stress corrosion resistance than austenitic stainless steel. Ferritic stainless steels have been widely used in vessels, vehicles, household appliances, kitchen equipments and building decoration because of its excellent stress corrosion and spot corrosion resistance addition to good strength. Because it does not contain nickel, it is a cheaper alternative of austenitic stainless steel. In this work weldments of FSS welded by pulse MIG welding using argon as a shielding gas were investigated. The austenitic stainless steel (ER309L) and ferritic stainless steel (ER430) electrode wires were used to prepare the weldments. To obtain a good welded joint the welding process parameters were experimentally optimised. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the prepared weldments were investigated. In the weldment welded by austenitic stainless steel electrode wire dendritic austenitic phase was observed in the weld metal zone. In heat affected zone intragranular carbide precipitation and grain boundary martensite were observed. In case of weldments welded by ferritic stainless steel electrode wire coarse grains were formed in weld metal zone and heat affected zone. Grain boundary martensite, ferrite and intragranular carbide precipitation were found in weld metal zone and heat affected zone. Impact strength of the weldments welded by austenitic stainless steel electrode wire was found higher due to formation of austenite phase in the weld metal zone. Impact strength of the weldments welded by ferritic stainless steel electrode wire was found very low due to formation of coarse grain and martensite in the weld metal zone. The ultimate tensile strength and percentage elongation of the weldments welded by austenitic stainless steel electrode wire were found higher than the weldments welded by ferritic stainless steel electrode wire. Hence weldments of ferritic stainless steel having superior mechanical properties will be obtained by using austenitic stainless steel electrode wire. During the tensile test the specimens were broken outside the welded joint (in base metal) which confirms the good quality of the joints

Can bone marrow aspirate improve mandibular fracture repair in camels (Camelus dromedarius)? A preliminary study.

BackgroundMandibular fractures are common in camels, leading to considerable economic losses. This study explored methods of improving mandibular fractures repair, adjuvant with interdental wire, or bone plate fixation. Autologous bone marrow (BM) injection enhances osteogenesis and rapid healing.ObjectivesTo investigate the effect of autologous BM aspirate as an adjuvant treatment for repairing mandibular fractures in camels with interdental wire, or bone plate fixation.MethodsThirty dromedary camels aged 5–8 years and of both sexes were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups: group 1 (n = 10) treated with stainless steel wire fixation and BM injection at the fracture line, group 2 (n = 10) treated with plate fixation and BM injection at the fracture line, group 3 (n = 5) treated with stainless steel bone wire fixation and placebo saline injection at the fracture line, and group 4 (n = 5) treated with plate fixation and placebo injection at the fracture line. The mandibular fractures were followed weekly for 12 weeks postoperatively to assess improvement and healing based on clinical evaluation, radiographic union scale, and bone turnover markers (i.e., bone alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, pyridinoline, and deoxypyridinoline).ResultsCompared to other groups, elevated bone turnover markers in group 1 were demonstrated (p < 0.05) on the seventh postoperative day. Likewise, compared to other groups, both clinical findings and radiographic union scale significantly improved (p < 0.05) in group 1 on the 56th postoperative day.ConclusionsBM aspirate has a promising beneficial osteogenic effect on mandibular fracture repair in camels, most notably when combined with interdental wire fixation.

A Comparative Study of Management of Femoral Shaft Fracture in Children: A Prospective Study

Context: Femoral shaft fracture is the most common major pediatric orthopedic fractures and treatment of them carries a lot of controversies. Aims: The aim of this study was to compare the functional outcome after internal fixation with titanium elastic nail and stainless steel Kirschner wire in unstable femoral shaft fracture in children. Settings and Design: This prospective study was conducted at Sharda University between December 2010 and December 2017 and were followed up for 12 months. Materials and Methods: A total of hundred children between the ages of 2–14 years having closed unstable fracture of the femoral shaft were included in the present study. Fifty children were managed with titanium nails (Group 1) and the same number of children was managed with stainless steel Kirschner wires (K-wires) (Group 2). Functional outcomes were evaluated using the criteria of Flynn et al. Statistical Analysis Used: Statically analysis was limited to calculation of percentage of patients who had unions, malunions, delayed unions, or nonunions and excellent, good, and poor outcomes. Results: Based on the Flynn criteria, 92% of patients had excellent results, 8% had satisfactory results, and no one showed poor results. There was no clinically significant difference between the two groups with respect to time to union, functional outcome, and complication. Conclusion: The clinic-radiological results were not significantly different between titanium nail and Kirschner wire at 1-year follow-up as observed by our study. The cost of Kirschner wire is one-third the cost of titanium nail.

Comparison of the Anchorage Value of the First Molars Supported with Implant and First Molars Supported with Second Molar during En Masse Retraction.

Aims and Objectives:The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of mini-implants as adjuncts for intraoral anchorage units for en masse retraction of maxillary anterior teeth in bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion cases.Materials and Methods:The study sample consisted of 15 patients (10 females and 5 males). The samples were compared for anchorage loss with the implant-supported molar and conventional molar contralaterally in both the maxilla and mandible after six months of retraction period. The mini-implants used were 1.5 mm in diameter and 8 mm in length and were inserted in the first and third quadrant between the roots of second premolar and first molar under local anesthesia at an angle of 45°. For en masse retraction, active tiebacks with ligating (100g) were used bilaterally extending from molar hooks to J-hook on a 0.019” × 0.025” stainless steel arch wire. Lateral cephalograms were taken before and after retraction for assessing the loss of anchorage in maxillary and mandibular first molars.Results:Anchorage loss of 1.46 mm in the maxilla and 1.36 mm in mandible was found with conventional molar anchorage, whereas no statistically significant anchorage loss was found in the implant-supported molar side.Conclusion:Implant-supported molar side showed better anchorage compared with the conventional molar side. Hence, implant-supported molar can be used as an absolute anchorage unit in the en masse retraction of anterior teeth.

The effect of electro-thermal treatment of stainless steel arch wire on mechanical properties and cell proliferation

Abstract Background Electric resistance heat treatment may be performed on orthodontic arch wires, but it remains unclear whether this procedure reliably provides better mechanical properties or whether an austenite phase transition affords less cytotoxicity and less arch wire width change. Methods Stainless steel (SS) arch wires of 0.017 × 0.025 and 0.019 × 0.025 inches in size were heat-treated using a spot welder for eight seconds at power settings of 2, 4, 6 and 8. The surface morphology, coefficient of friction (COF), flexural modulus, cytotoxicity, austenitic content, colour change and arch width of the samples were subsequently analysed. Results The COF, flexural modulus and austenitic content of the orthodontic SS arch wires increased after heat treatment. SS wires appearing brownish-yellow and blue exhibited higher flexural moduli. The heat treatment of the SS wires did not significantly increase arch wire width or cause cytotoxicity. Conclusions Electric resistance heat treatment of SS arch wires is a feasible method to improve the flexural modulus without widening the arch wire and increasing cytotoxicity. The colour of the wire helps determine the heating status, and the maximum flexural modulus of the wires is obtained when the colour changes to brownish-yellow.

Wire-Based Additive Manufacturing of Stainless Steel Components

Three different wire-fed additive manufacturing (AM) processes were employed to evaluate differences between laser, arc, and electron beam heat sources used for high-deposition-rate AM on the order of 1 kg/h. Optimum weld and build parameters were developed independently to match the characteristics of each heat source using 308L stainless steel welding wire as the feedstock. Laser-wire AM was made with the lowest energy per unit length of weld and had the best control of the melt pool and surface finish. Wire arc-based AM had an intermediate energy per unit length of weld of approximately 5× that of the laser process, while electron beam wire AM had the highest energy per unit length of weld at approximately 10× that of the laser process. Analysis of the parts that were built included evaluation of mechanical properties and microstructures, and these properties are discussed with respect to the difference in input energy and cooling rates. Results show that all three processes build parts with properties that exceed those of annealed 304L wrought stainless steel. How-ever, significant differences exist between the processes, and the results presented here can be used to help select the best wire-fed process for a given high-deposition-rate application.

Evaluation of magnetic properties in ferromagnetic martensite particle using type 304 stainless steel wire

In this study, the magnetic properties of a single martensite particle were investigated using type 304 stainless wire, which can reduce the number of crystal grains per unit area. First, the magnetization curve of wire specimens with different martensite fractions was measured by a SQUID magnetic flux meter. Then, the coercivity and susceptibility parameters were evaluated from the magnetization curve and factors contributing to these parameters were discussed. It was found that the coercivity values along the long and short axes of wire specimens with a diameter of 0.4 mm increased and subsequently decreased with an increase in the martensite fraction. Further, the susceptibility values of the same specimen along the long axis increased and along the short axis decreased with increasing martensite fractions. The results indicate that the coercivity and susceptibility of a martensite particle are affected by the size of variant clusters and the shape anisotropy of the martensite particle.

The Maryland bridge retainer: A modification of a Maryland bridge

Preservation of the maxillary lateral incisor space after orthodontic treatment in an adolescent patient traditionally requires the use of a retainer with a lateral pontic, commonly referred to as a "flipper," which is minimally effective in the long term. This article illustrates a technique for chairside fabrication of a Maryland bridge retainer for semi-permanent retention. A stainless steel braided palatal wire is bonded to the anterior teeth. A pontic is then built intraorally with flowable composite, using the palatal wire as scaffolding. The retainer is maintained until the patient is of age for a more permanent restoration.

The contribution of orthodontic braces to aluminum exposure in humans: an experimental in vitro study.

There is limited information on whether metals such as aluminum (Al) can migrate from orthodontic braces to saliva and subsequently contribute to its exposure in humans. This study aimed to assess this experimentally by incubating elastomeric orthodontic ligatures in artificial saliva for 30days and other components of orthodontic braces (brackets, arch wires, and retainers) up to 180days. As demonstrated, significantly higher levels of Al were leached from elastomeric ligatures (mean ± SD 28.2 ± 6.8μg compared with their stainless steel counterparts (3.6± 0.1μg) during 30days. The higher the incubation time, the greater levels of Al leaching to artificial saliva were observed with the highest levels found for CNA β arch wire (252 ± 12μg), Ni-Ti-Al arch wire (224 ± 11μg), ceramic brackets (199 ± 10μg), stainless steel arch wire (108 ± 5μg), and metallic brackets (81.0 ± 4.2μg) after 180days of incubation. However, considering the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) established by the European Food Safety Authority, the intraoral use of orthodontic braces considered in this study would in the worst case constitute 0.04% and 0.09% of TWI in 70-kg adults and 30-kg children, respectively. In conclusion, the orthodontic braces considered in this study have no contribution to Al exposure in humans and can be considered safe in this regard.

Surgical Management with Self-Locking Pins and Circumferential Wiring for Treating Comminuted Patella Fractures Achieved Seiza-Style Sitting

Surgical fixation of comminuted patella fractures is technically challenging. Despite the fact that tension band wiring or screw fixation are the most common surgical procedures, these surgical techniques have crucial limitations for laterally scattered fragments. We demonstrate two cases with comminuted patella fractures undergoing surgical fixation with self-locking pin and circumferential wiring, confirming the rigid fixation achieving deep knee flexion. After midline longitudinal skin incision, 2.0 mm stainless pins (AiMedic MMT, Tokyo, Japan) were inserted radially to penetrate each fragment and 1.2 mm stainless wire was circumferentially looped and self-locked in the holes on the pins, which satisfied rigid fixation. Any restrictions in range of motion and weight bearing were required postoperatively and 3- to 6-month postoperative cares achieved seiza-style sitting with deep knee flexion.

Failure Analysis of a Jet Boat Steering Linkage

As part of a steering linkage mechanism in a jet boat, two D-ring shackle pins were safety wired together in order to prevent either of the shackle pins from falling out. Relative movement of the D-ring shackles from maneuvering the boat caused fluctuating stresses in the stainless steel safety wire, resulting in a fatigue fracture of the wire. Without the constraint of the safety wire, a pin from one of the D-ring shackles became dislodged, resulting in the failure of the steering mechanism, loss of control and crash of the boat. As well as a demonstration of the key features of the components that led to the determination of a fatigue fracture, the significant flaws in the installation and configuration of the steering linkage are discussed.

Super-fine stainless wires enabled multifunctional and smart reactive powder concrete

Super-fine stainless wire (SSW) with excellent mechanical, electrical, thermal and electromagnetic characteristics can form a widely-distributed reinforcing network in reactive powder concrete (RPC) at low dosage, thus endowing RPC with desired mechanical performance and functional property. The multi-functional and smart properties of SSW reinforced RPC were investigated in this paper. The research results indicated that the flexural strength, compressive strength and flexural toughness of RPC reinforced with 1.5% SSWs are 31.9%, 41.2% and 114.4% higher than that of RPC without SSW. The electrical resistivity of composites is reduced by six orders of magnitude and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy only shows small flat arcs in the first quadrant. SSW reinforced RPC exhibits stable piezoresistive response under cyclic compressive loading. Meanwhile, the gauge factor of 1.5% SSWs reinforced RPC under monotonic compressive loading can reach 153.9. The addition of 1.5% SSWs leads to 19.9% increase in damping ratio of RPC as well as 202.9% increase for electromagnetic wave shielding efficiency at the frequency of 4 GHz. The electromagnetic wave absorbing property of RPC reinforced with 1.5% SSWs exceeds 125.0% of that of RPC without SSW in the frequency range of 17–18 GHz. The addition of SSW can effectively increase the thermal conductivity and wear resistance of RPC. SSW reinforced RPC has great potential for developing multi-functional and smart infrastructures, thus improving their safety, longevity and function.
