Objective: The aim of this retrospective study is to identify risk factors, sociodemographic and psychiatric characteristics of child and adolescents admitted to Ondokuz May›s University Faculty of Medicine (Samsun, Turkey) Pediatric Emergency Unit with suicide attempts. We also sought to determine the results of these suicide attempts. Methods: Medical records of 347 cases who accepted to Pediatric Emergency Room were analized and the sociodemographic characteristics and factors leading suicidal attempts have been assessed. Results: Demographic characteristic; 202 (58,2%) of the cases were living urban places, and 220 of these cases were students, 311 suicide attemps including overdose drug ingestion (89,6%) and 126 (36,3%) of these drug were antidepressants, The causes that pushed them to attmept suicide; 157(%45,2) because of familial problembs, 95 (27,4%) school problems, 78 (22,5%) social environment problems, 27 (%7,8 ) psychiatric problems. After the psychiatry consultations, 162(47%) of the cases were disgnosed depression. All the cases were discharged except one who died. Conclusions: In chilhood and adolescence suicide attempts , giving importance to the education of the family, assesing the family together with the patient, enlightening the healty staff, school teachers and pshchiatric consultants working at schools about depression and thus identifying depression clearly enough and treating it are the most important principals that can decrease suicide attempts.
