‘But He Has Broken Every Jar in the Place, as He Said He Would …’: Letters of Petrie to von Bissing: A Short Contribution to the History of Egyptology

The Archives of the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam contain a stack of letters from W. M. Flinders Petrie to the German Egyptologist von Bissing, dating from between 1899 to 1911. Among other subjects, the letters refer to Petrie’s conflict with the French excavator Amélineau, his rival for the concession at Abydos, asking von Bissing to keep an eye on him. Furthermore, Petrie gives short reports about his work in Abydos, Heracleopolis, the Fayum and Memphis, sometimes with otherwise unpublished details. Personal details, complaints on the bureaucracy of the Service des Antiquités are other important subjects occurring in the letters. [Formula: see text]

Development of a Fully Automated Circulating Letter Sorting Machine.

We have developed a machine that can sequence 2 000 letters into a specified order in 15 minutes. It singles out a letter from a stack of letters supplied into the feeder, transports it to a bar code reader that reads the address information, and stacks it in a bin according to the address. To increase the throughput, we have developed downward feeder, instead of upward feeder and switchback mechanism. As sorting algorithm, we have applied the radix sorting method, because of the higher throughput and simple arrangement. To sequence letters based on the method, it is necessary to repeat the sorting. After all letters have been stacked into bins, the letters are transferred from the bins to the feeder automatically. An interchanging bin / feeder mechanism makes circulating possible.

When I was a child growing up in the 1950s, my family used to gather around the television set to watch The Perry Como Show. One of my strongest memories from that show was the segment in which a chorus sang, Letters, we get letters, we get stacks and stacks of letters. Dear Perry, would you be so kind to fill a request and sing those songs we like best. And then Perry Como, sitting on a stool with one foot on the floor and one foot on the rung and wearing that famous sweater and casual, bemused smile, would croon a few tunes. Or so I remember it.
