Abstract
When I was a child growing up in the 1950s, my family used to gather around the television set to watch The Perry Como Show. One of my strongest memories from that show was the segment in which a chorus sang, Letters, we get letters, we get stacks and stacks of letters. Dear Perry, would you be so kind to fill a request and sing those songs we like best. And then Perry Como, sitting on a stool with one foot on the floor and one foot on the rung and wearing that famous sweater and casual, bemused smile, would croon a few tunes. Or so I remember it. Whatever the truth of that memory, it is a fact that C&EN does get stacks and stacks of letters.
