The problem of what the criterion is for the formation of a stable vacancy superlattice in metals, is addressed. Calculations are made for alkali metals, whose elastic anisotropy parameter is negative; they indicate a vacancy superlattice stability at lattice spacings approximately 3 in both Na and K. (DLC)
