Early impact assessment of the paninvasive polyphagous shot hole borer beetle on commercial pear production

AbstractThe polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB) beetle, Euwallacea fornicatus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), and its phytopathogenic fungal symbiont (Fusarium euwallaceae Freeman et al.) threaten commercial and urban tree species worldwide. This pest–fungus complex has been newly discovered in the commercial deciduous fruit industry (Western Cape, South Africa), where its effect is still unknown. This study explored the impact of PSHB infestation on fruit quality and plant water‐use efficiency (WUE) – as indicated by carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios – of commercially cultivated Packham's Triumph pear trees within the first year of invasion, as well as changes in phenotypic plasticity (trait expression range). The impact of PSHB infestation is currently most evident in fruit quality traits, with a clear distinction between the control and most densely attacked tree categories. Fruit and leaf traits showed high variation and a significant change in phenotypic plasticity. Increased PSHB attack density was associated with smaller, duller‐toned, sweeter fruit at the time of harvest and data tended towards reduced plant WUE. Producers can expect significant variation in fruit quality and plant WUE even in hosts without branch dieback, visible plant stress or extensive beetle breeding, especially in orchards where infestations persist beyond the first year. These findings necessitate additional research to describe the long‐term impact, examine the threat to other deciduous fruit crops and cultivars and assess the need for adapted management or harvesting methods.

Elucidating carbon sources of hydrothermal vent animals using natural 14C abundances and habitat water temperature

AbstractDeep‐sea hydrothermal vents host exceptional ecosystems with lush animal communities primarily relying on organic matter (OM) produced by chemoautotrophic microbes. Though energy sources and food webs at vents have been extensively studied, the exact carbon sources of chemosynthetic primary production, such as methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the vent fluid or bottom water, have not been elucidated quantitatively across spatial scales. Here, we investigate carbon and nitrogen sources of 12 vent animal species at the Iheya North field, Okinawa Trough inhabiting different distances from the central venting area and with various feeding ecologies using natural‐abundance radiocarbon (Δ14C) in combination with conventional stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N). Our results show that generally, animals living closer to vent orifices were more depleted in 14C, indicating they assimilate more carbon from vent fluid CO2. Those relying on methanotrophs, however, exhibited low Δ14C values regardless of distance due to the lack of methane in the non‐vent‐influenced bottom water. Organisms with low Δ14C values also tend to exhibit low δ15N values, implying NH4+ assimilation into biomass in environments with high NH4+ concentrations. Our results demonstrate that 14C can clearly distinguish between chemoautotrophically fixed carbon originating from the vent fluid and detrital OM derived from surface primary production, and also discriminate between CO2‐ and CH4‐based chemoautotrophy. Although vent animals rely on vent fluid energetically, our results highlight that the dependency on vent fluids as carbon source varies greatly depending on habitat, as well as carbon fixation pathways of microbial primary producers.

Estimating whisker growth rates and foraging profiles for northern fur seal pups and adult females using stable isotope analysis

Changing ratios of stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes in consumer tissues reflect foraging patterns over time and can be used to inform studies on historically vulnerable populations. Northern fur seals (NFS; Callorhinus ursinus) at San Miguel Island (SMI), California, have been severely impacted by climate events such as El Niño and remain susceptible to future environmental disturbances, necessitating the need to further understand their foraging ecology. We analyzed sequential δ13C and δ15N values along single NFS whiskers sampled from five pups and five unrelated post-parturient females at SMI and reconstructed temporally aligned stable isotope profiles for each whisker. Pup profiles consistently showed increases in postnatal δ13C and δ15N values that likely stem from pup consumption of maternal milk and changes in maternal foraging locations after parturition. Adult female profiles indicated predominantly heterogeneous foraging strategies and minimal foraging outside the Southern California Bight. These findings provide initial characterizations of longitudinal, stable isotope-derived foraging data for NFS from SMI and offer insight into the inference of otariid foraging ecology with sequential δ13C and δ15N values.

Stable isotope analysis provides novel insights for measuring lake ecosystem recovery following acidification

Unstable and simplified freshwater food webs impair the resilience of Canadian fisheries facing environmental stressors. This study utilizes stable isotope analyses to assess trophic recovery to explore food web resiliency in lakes historically impacted by metal mining in Sudbury, Ontario. Carbon (δ 13C) and nitrogen (δ 15N) stable isotope ratios were quantified in yellow perch (Perca flavescens), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), and baseline organisms to develop quantitative population metrics and describe dietary niche partitioning. The most severely damaged lake with a barren watershed had the lowest trophic positioning, smallest body size and niche area, and greatest niche overlap among fish species. Semi-barren and forested watershed lakes were more similar to reference lakes in isotopic metrics; however elevated niche overlap and reduced trophic positioning suggests recovery in these lakes is ongoing. We found that including stable isotope analyses in lake recovery studies provided critical insights not captured by traditional biomonitoring approaches.

Changes in Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen Stable Isotope Ratios and Mercury Concentrations in Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) during and after Lactation

The changes in the stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N), oxygen (δ18O), and mercury (Hg) concentrations in muscle and liver tissues during and after lactation were studied in killer whales stranded along the coast of Hokkaido, in the northern area of Japan (n = 16). Calf muscles displayed δ13C- and δ15N-enriched peaks and a δ18O-depleted peak during lactation. The δ13C- and δ15N-enriched peaks appear to reflect the extensive nursing of 13C- and 15N-enriched milk and the onset of weaning, whereas the δ18O-depleted peak may be attributable to the extensive nursing of 18O-depleted milk and the onset of weaning. The δ13C and δ15N values tended to gradually increase after the weaning, whereas the δ18O values tended to decrease. The δ13C and δ15N levels in calves were similar between liver and muscle samples, whereas those in mature animals were higher in liver than in muscle samples. The isotopic turnover rates of C and N may be similar between the liver and muscle tissues in calves, which are rapidly growing animals. The Hg concentrations in muscle tissues were slightly higher in small calves than in large calves, probably due to the Hg transfer across placenta. The Hg concentrations in liver and muscle samples increased with increasing body length, and those in two liver samples from mature animals exceeded the high-risk threshold for marine mammal health effects (82 μg/wet g).

Environmental conditions in the Massif Central during the Upper Palaeolithic using stable isotope tracking (13C, 15N) of bone collagen from large herbivores

ABSTRACTThe environmental conditions experienced by hunter‐gatherers during the second part of the Upper Palaeolithic (ca. 28 000–15 000 cal bp) are poorly known in the mid‐elevation volcanic mountains of the Massif Central in southern France. The stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen (13C/12C and 15N/14N expressed as δ13C and δ15N values) in bone collagen of large herbivores can track their diet and habitat, reflecting local abiotic conditions (temperature, aridity, altitude). Due to poor preservation of skeletal organic matter in the region, new radiocarbon dating was conducted on a limited number of quality‐controlled collagen samples, based on a minimum carbon content of 30%. They document three main phases of occupation corresponding to the Final Gravettian, the Badegoulian and the Magdalenian, each of which is represented in different regions of the Allier and Loire valleys. Over time, a decrease in horse δ15N values, the best documented species of large herbivores, is found between the Final Gravettian (ca. 26 700–25 600 cal bp), around the Last Glacial Maximum and the Badegoulian (ca. 21 900–19 200 cal bp), followed by an increase in δ15N and δ13C values during the Magdalenian (ca. 19 100–16 600 cal bp). During the Badegoulian, the δ15N values of the horses were lower than those of their counterparts in southwestern France, testifying to harsh climatic conditions favourable to a tundra‐like landscape, also reflected in the higher horse and reindeer δ13C values in the Allier valley compared to those in southwestern France. The relatively high δ13C and low δ15N values of a Final Gravettian wolf from the Allier valley suggests reindeer as a preferred prey, in line with their high abundance in the archaeological sites. Game access, rather than climatic conditions or lithic resources, seems to have motivated human groups to occupy the Massif Central during the Upper Palaeolithic.

Shrouded in history: Unveiling the ways of life of an early Muslim population in Santarém, Portugal (8th- 10th century AD).

In around 716 AD, the city of Santarém, Portugal, was conquered by the Berber and Arab armies that swept the Iberian Peninsula and went on to rule the region until the 12th century. Archaeological excavations in 2007/08 discovered an Islamic necropolis (Avenida 5 de Outubro #2-8) that appears to contain the remains of an early Muslim population in Santarém (8th- 10th century). In this study, skeletal material from 58 adult individuals was analysed for stable carbon (δ13Ccol; δ13Cap), nitrogen (δ15N) and sulphur (δ34S) isotope ratios in bones, and stable oxygen (δ18O), carbon (δ13Cen) and radiogenic strontium (87Sr/86Sr) isotopes in tooth enamel. The results of this study revealed a dietary pattern of predominantly C3-plant and domestic C3-fed herbivore consumption during adulthood (δ13Ccol and δ15N, respectively) but a higher proportion of C4-plant input during childhood (δ13Cen) for some individuals-interpreted as possible childhood consumption of millet porridge, a common practice in North Africa-in those with unorthodox burial types (Groups 1 and 2) that was not practiced in the individuals with canonical burials (Group 3). In this first mobility study of a medieval Muslim population in Portugal, δ18ODW values revealed greater heterogeneity in Groups 1 and 2, consistent with diverse origins, some in more humid regions than Santarém when compared to regional precipitation δ18O data, contrasting the more homogenous Group 3, consistent with the local precipitation δ18O range. Ancient DNA analysis conducted on three individuals revealed maternal (mtDNA) and paternal (Y-chromosome) lineages compatible with a North African origin for (at least) some of the individuals. Additionally, mobility of females in this population was higher than males, potentially resulting from a patrilocal social system, practiced in Berber and Arab communities. These results serve to offer a more detailed insight into the ancestry and cultural practices of early Muslim populations in Iberia.

Stable isotopes delineate regional pelagic food web structure in British Columbia’s coastal ocean

The pelagic food webs of British Columbia’s (BC) coastal oceans have never had a comprehensive review of their trophic structure. In this study, we analyzed carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios of pelagic food web components collected from four regions in southern BC: Juan de Fuca Strait, the Strait of Georgia, Queen Charlotte Strait, and Queen Charlotte Sound during an August 2019 survey. In addition, conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD), chlorophyll, and nutrient data were collected to assess the oceanographic basis for regionalization. Between regions, we observed differences in the isotopic baseline driven by regional oceanography. Likewise, we also observed oceanography-driven differences in regional food chain length, carbon range, and isotopic overlap. Species-specific trophic level and isotopic niche were determined. For common pelagic species, we described how trophic level varied regionally, was not always in line with previously published dietary data, and instead largely tracked regional changes in food chain length. We conclude that variable food web properties and trophic ecology can manifest across the small spatial scales of the BC coast’s discrete regions.

Trophodynamics and potential health risk assessment of heavy metals in the mangrove food web in Yanpu Bay, China

Mangroves are the cradle of coastal water biodiversity and are susceptible to heavy metal pollution. However, the trophic transfer mechanism of heavy metals in the mangrove food web and the resulting human health risks are not fully understood. Heavy metal concentration (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, V, Co) and stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) were evaluated in sediments and particulate organic matter, litter, and aquatic organisms (plankton, arthropods, mollusks, omnivorous fish, and carnivorous fish) from the Yanpu Bay mangroves. The results revealed that heavy metals exhibited different trophic transfer patterns. As and Hg were efficiently biomagnified, with trophic magnification factors of 1.17 and 1.42, respectively; while Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, V, and Co were efficiently biodiluted. Zn exhibited a trophic magnification factor > 1 and was not significantly correlated with δ15N (p > 0.05), suggesting no biomagnification or biodilution. The heavy metals in the important fishery species (omnivorous fish and carnivorous fish) were below the permissible limits, except for Zn in Ophichthus apicalis. The assessment of probabilistic health risks revealed that fish consumption in adults and children posed an acceptable risk (total target hazard quotient <1).

Effects of lipid extraction on stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in muscles of freshwater fish

ABSTRACT The extraction of lipids by the Folch method from the muscles of all the fish studied led to statistically significant differences in the values of δ 15N. At the same time, lipid extraction led to a statistically significant increase in δ 13C in pike and roach, and to a statistically insignificant decrease in δ 13C in perch and bream. Thus, lipid extraction cannot serve as a universal method of sample preparation for the analysis of the isotopic composition of carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N) in fish muscles. The differences between the δ 13C values in the samples before and after lipid extraction were statistically investigated by different models. It is shown that mathematical correction method models can be used, but the results are depending on the fish types.

Niche overlap between native Cirrhinus molitorella and potential invasive competitors

Biological invasion is one of the important reasons for the decline of freshwater biodiversity in China and even in the world. The Pearl river basin is one of the most threatened areas in China by biological invasion. Over the past four decades, mrigal carp Cirrhinus mrigala and rohu Labeo rohita have invaded the Pearl river. They potentially pose a huge threat to a well-known economic species, native mud carp Cirrhinus molitorella. However, little is known about the likely habitat distributions of these two invasive species, which limits our management of them. In this study, we detected the stable isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon for fish and quantified their niche overlap with nicheROVER in R. The result showed that the individuals of two invasive species had a higher probability to be found in niche region of native C. molitorella (i.e., 65 % for C. mrigala and 74 % for L. rohita). Moreover, to increase understanding of their habitat distributions and potential range of spread, the existing habitats data of these three fish species obtained from previous literatures and the high-resolution bioclimatic parameters from WorldClim were analyzed via Maxent model. The results stressed that niche overlap was high among species, which could have an impact on local biodiversity in future. Furthermore, the visualization of habitat distributions could help show the dynamic habitat changes of invasive and native species over time, while also provide new insights into the subsequent prevention and control for invasive species in other river regions around the world.

Male, female, and mixed-sex poplar plantations support divergent soil microbial communities.

Males and females of dioecious plants have sex-specific adaptations to diverse habitats. The effects of inter- and intrasexual interactions in poplar plantations on composition, structure, and function of soil microbiota have not been explored in degraded areas. We conducted a series of greenhouse and field experiments to investigate how belowground competition, soil microbial communities, and seasonal variation nitrogen content differ among female, male, and mixed-sex Populus cathayana plantations. In the greenhouse experiment, female neighbors suppressed the growth of males under optimal nitrogen conditions. However, male neighbors enhanced stable isotope ratio of nitrogen (δ15 N) of females under intersexual competition. In the field, the root length density, root area density, and biomass of fine roots were lower in female plantations than in male or mixed-sex plantations. Bacterial networks of female, male, and mixed-sex plantations were characterized by different composition of hub nodes, including connectors, modules, and network hubs. The sex composition of plantations altered bacterial and fungal community structures according to Bray-Curtis distances, with 44% and 65% of variance explained by the root biomass, respectively. The total soil nitrogen content of mixed-sex plantation was higher than that in female plantation in spring and summer. The mixed-sex plantation also had a higher β-1,4-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase activity in summer and a higher nitrification rate in autumn than the other two plantations. The seasonal soil N content, nitrification rate, and root distribution traits demonstrated spatiotemporal niche separation in the mixed-sex plantation. We argue that a strong female-female competition and limited nitrogen content could strongly impede plant growth and reduce the resistance of monosex plantations to climate change and the mixed-sex plantations constitutes a promising way to restore degraded land.

Trophic structure of fish assemblages in two offshore islands (Ulleungdo and Dokdo) of Korea revealed using stable isotope analysis

The objective of this study was to characterize the trophic structure of fish assemblages on the coasts of offshore islands and the eastern mainland of the Korean Peninsula. We compared the seasonal variability in the trophic structure of fish assemblages between the coasts of two island sites (Ulleungdo and Dokdo) and one mainland site (Hupo), which are on a similar latitude. We analyzed the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of fish assemblages during spring (April) and summer (August) 2021. No temporal differences in the isotope values of fish and basal resources (i.e., suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM)) were found over the sampling period at the Hupo site. In contrast, at the Ulleungdo and Dokdo sites, the fishes and SPOM showed seasonal differences in the δ13C and δ15N values between the two seasons. In particular, the fish δ15N values at the island sites were relatively higher in summer compared to those in spring, suggesting the seasonal variation in the food chains and/or trophic status between consumers and their dietary sources. These regional isotopic variations also result in differences in the seasonal tendencies of the isotopic niche parameters of fish assemblages between the mainland and island coasts. Such differences in the seasonal isotopic patterns of fish assemblages suggest a relatively substantial shift in the dietary resources available to fish consumers on island coasts compared to those on the mainland coast. Overall, our results suggest that fish assemblages in offshore island coasts have distinct seasonal variability in trophic characteristics in response to changing environmental conditions, including basal resources, compared with fish food webs on the mainland coast at similar latitudes.

Changes in urinary stable nitrogen isotope ratios during controlled short-term energy deficit: a proof-of-principle analysis

PurposeStable isotope ratios of nitrogen (δ15N) have previously been shown to increase in human hair during periods of catabolism. The goal of this study was to assess changes in δ15N in urinary urea (δ15Nurea) and Δ15N during a short-term controlled energy deficit.MethodsWe analyzed samples from 6 recreationally active men (25 ± 1 years, BMI: 23.5 ± 0.6 kg/m2) who participated in a repeated measures cross-over study involving 4 days of energy deficit (ED, ~ 15 kcal/kg FFM) without and with exercise (ED-EX, ED + EX) and control conditions in energy balance (CON-EX, CON + EX). δ15Nurea was analyzed from urine samples, and Δ15N was calculated as δ15Nurea–δ15Ndiet, with δ15Ndiet obtained from diet prescriptions.Resultsδ15Nurea was significantly elevated in ED-EX (4.4 ± 0.2‰) when compared to CON-EX (3.7 ± 0.1‰; p = 0.026) and CON + EX (3.34 ± 0.13‰, p = 0.001). As a consequence, Δ15N was positive in ED-EX (0.2 ± 0.2‰) and remained negative in ED + EX (− 0.6 ± 0.5‰), CON-EX (− 1.0 ± 0.2) and CON + EX (− 1.1 ± 0.2). Differences in Δ15N were significant between ED-EX and CON-EX (p = 0.005) and ED-EX and CON + EX (p = 0.006).ConclusionOur results suggest that δ15Nurea and subsequently Δ15N are responsive to a short-term energy deficit, likely due to increased amino acid oxidation to meet energy demands and preferable elimination of 14N.

Are lipids always depleted? Comparison of hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen isotopic values in the muscle and lipid of larval lampreys.

Stable isotope ratios in organisms can be used to estimate dietary source contributions, but lipids must first be accounted for to interpret values meaningfully. Lipids are depleted in heavy isotopes because during lipid synthesis light isotopes of carbon (12C) and hydrogen (1H) are preferentially incorporated. Prior work in larval lampreys has noted unusual lipid effects, which suggest lipids are enriched in the heavy isotope of carbon (13C), but still depleted in the heavy isotope of hydrogen (deuterium; 2H); nitrogen, a relatively rare element in lipids, has not been identified as being as sensitive to lipid content. Our objective was to determine if stable isotope ratios of hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen behaved as expected in larval lampreys, or if their lipids presented different isotopic behavior. The δ2H, δ13C, and δ15N were measured from the muscle of four lamprey species before and after lipid extraction. In addition, muscle of least brook lamprey (Lampetra aepyptera) was collected every three months for a year from two streams in Maryland. Isotopic ratios were measured in bulk and lipid-extracted muscles, as well as in extracted lipids. The difference between muscle samples before and after lipid extraction (Δδ2H, Δδ13C, Δδ15N) was positively related to lipid proxy (%H or C:N ratio) and were fit best by linear models for Δδ2H and Δδ15N, and by a non-linear model for Δδ13C. The difference between lipid-extracted muscle and lipid δ13C (ΔMLδ13C) was negative and varied between months (ANOVA, F3,53 = 5.05, p < 0.005). Our work suggests that while lipids are often depleted in 13C, this is not a universal rule; however, the depletion of 2H in lipid synthesis appears broadly true.

Isotope ratios of total C, N, and S in particulate matter simultaneously calibrated by mixed USGS and IAEA reference materials

This study presents a method for calibrating the isotope ratios of the total carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur in particulate matter (PM) collected from the Seoul metro using an elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometer (EA-IRMS). Mixtures of isotope reference materials (MRMs) from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reference materials formed an input dataset for generalized least squares (GLS) regression to yield calibration lines. The analytical method proposed in this study enabled the measurement of stable isotope ratios of total carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur simultaneously. Results showed good linearity and repeatability for carbon and nitrogen isotopes, but poor results for sulfur isotopes due to peak broadening. Reference values with uncertainties for the isotope ratios of total carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur were determined for the collected PM, demonstrating twice as much uncertainty as that of the USGS and IAEA reference materials. Homogeneity was the biggest uncertainty source for the calibrated values.

Effect of starvation on physiological and survival traits of Mimachlamys varia (Linneaus, 1758)

In order to better understand Mimachlamys varia (Linneaus, 1758) response to nutritional stress, a controlled-condition experiment was conducted. Two scallop batches (i.e. juveniles and adults) were completely food-deprived for 3 months. Changes in mass and energy content of tissues (adductor muscle, digestive gland, rest of the soft tissues), as well as stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of the adductor muscle were monitored weekly. Both batches exhibited a 3-phase response to starvation. For adults, phase 1, was characterized by a fast loss in mass, an δ15N-enrichment, a stable calorific power, and a low mortality, corresponding to a transitional stage associated with protein-storage consumption. Phase 2 (day 28–42) exhibited a stabilization of mass and δ15N values, coinciding with a digestive gland calorific power drop and an acceleration in mortality. This corresponds to a “protein sparing” stage where highly energetic fuel such as lipids, which are stored especially in the digestive gland in pectinids, are consumed in priority. Juveniles exhibited a distinct response characterized by a significant mass loss and an increase in calorific power during the first phase (day 0–28). This body weight decrease may involve the remobilization of low-caloric biochemical compounds (e.g. proteins) using the structure as internal fuel, thus limiting somatic maintenance costs. During the second month, body mass and calorific power stabilized, indicating a “protein sparing” stage. In a third phase for both age classes, mass decreased again together with a sharp increase in mortality: essential structure was ultimately remobilized. The survival rate of juveniles was higher than that of adults during the first two months of the experiment (97% and 64%, respectively). Although the time required for starvation to deplete of half the cohort is higher for juveniles than for mature individuals, increase in mortality rate after reaching the “Point of No Return”, (e.g. the beginning of the last phase) was higher in juveniles than in adults. These results highlight the potential impacts of starvation at the population level, beyond the direct impact on individual survival. For instance, individuals may not effectively contribute to reproduction during the spawning period if exposed to a prolonged winter starvation episode. In particular, since highly energetic compounds stored in the digestive gland are often used as fuel to initiate gametogenesis in pectinids. Similarly, decrease in somatic weight in juveniles may delay their sexual maturity and hence their ability to contribute to population reproductive potential.

Abstract Understanding consumer trophic status and long‐term dietary changes can yield information about impacts of altered habitats on their ecology. In Hawai'i, coastal ecosystems have been significantly modified by the introduction of invasive seaweeds and mangroves, high nutrient load and overfishing, but so far, much is still to be understood about how these changes have affected the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). This study analyzed stable carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur isotope ratios in the bone tissue of modern and museum specimens of green turtles collected from 1901 to 2020 in Oahu and the North‐western Hawaiian Islands to understand how their isotopic niche has changed through time, a crucial step towards restoring the ecological role of a formerly decimated species. The standard ellipse size and the total area of the convex hull of the isotopic niche of green turtles in three periods (1901–1951, 1992–2008, and 2018–2020) were calculated. The stable isotope values of ancient green turtles (1901–1951) suggest that they relied heavily on macroalgae even before the introduction of exotic species and eutrophication promoted the development of algal pastures. However, a few ancient green turtles relied heavily on seagrasses, and others complemented their macroalgae‐based diets with significant amounts of animal matter. Such diet specialists were missing from the sample of current green sea turtles, suggesting that these foraging strategies are less common or perhaps even absent in the current population. The results suggest that green turtles have converged on the use of the most abundant resource, red macroalgae, likely because of the homogenization and simplification of coastal habitats and food webs due to anthropogenic influences. Restoring the population size of herbivorous fishes and a more diverse ecosystem structure may be necessary to recover the array of trophic strategies formerly present in the Hawaiian green turtle population.

Integrated approach for the isotope trophic position of black-tailed gull (Larus crassirostris) eggs over a decade: Combining stable isotopes of amino acids and fatty acids composition

Recently, compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) using the amino acid nitrogen stable isotope ratio (δ15NAAs) has been widely used for accurate estimation of trophic position (TP). In addition, a quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) offers insights into diet sources. In this study, we used these techniques to estimate the TP for seabirds that rely on diverse food sources across multiple ecosystems. This allows for the proper combination of factors used in TP calculation which are different for each ecosystem. The approach involved the application of a multi-mixing trophic discrimination factor (TDF) and mixing β which is a Δδ15N between trophic and source amino acid of primary producer. Since the black-tailed gulls (BTGs) are income-breeding seabirds, which rely on energy sources obtained around their breeding sites, they and their eggs could be useful bioindicators for environmental monitoring. However, the ecological properties of BTGs such as habitats, diets, and TP are not well known due to their large migration range for wintering or breeding and their feeding habits on both aquatic and terrestrial prey. In this study, the eggs were used for estimating TP and for predicting TP of mother birds to overcome difficulties such as capturing birds and collecting non-invasive tissue samples. Eggs, sampled over a decade from three Korean islands, showed spatial differences in diet origin. Considering both the food chain and physiology of BTG, the TP of eggs was estimated to be 3.3–4.0. Notably, the TP was significantly higher at site H (3.8 ± 0.1) than at site B (3.5 ± 0.2), which indicated a higher contribution of marine diet as confirmed by QFASA. Using a reproductive shift of δ15NAAs, the TP of the mother birds was predicted to be 3.6–4.3, positioning them as the top predator in the food web. The advanced integration of multiple approaches provides valuable insights into bird ecology.
