Electrophilic Sulfides(II) as a Novel Catalyst. V. Structure, Nucleophilicity, and Steric Compression of Stabilized Sulfur Ylides as Observed by 13C-NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract 13C chemical shifts and 13C–H spin coupling constants (179.7 Hz) of the ylide carbons of two dialkylsulfonium phenacylides show that the ylide carbons are basically sp2. Large upfield shifts (−9.5–−11.8 ppm) of carbonyl carbon signals (δC 181.7 and 179.2) of the ylides from those of the corresponding salts (δC 191.2 and 191.0) suggest significant contribution of a betaine structure. The 13C-NMR spectrum of methylisopropylsulfonium phenacylide showed two non-equivalent methyl signals (δC 17.9 and 18.4) for the isopropyl group. Steric γ-effects on ylide carbon chemical shifts were observed with several alkylsulfonium bis(methoxycarbonyl)methylides and trialkylsulfonium salts.

AbstractS‐Methylation of 6‐S‐benzyl‐6‐deoxy‐1,2‐O‐isopropylidene‐3‐O‐methyl‐α‐D‐xylo‐6‐thiohexofuranos‐5‐ulose (1) gave the expected sulfonium salt 2 which on alcaline treatment yielded the stable sulfur ylide 3. This compound constitutes an useful synthetic intermediate in carbohydrate chemistry. On heating in 1,2‐dimethoxyethane, it underwent a Stevens rearrangement which led to an extension of the carbon chain of the sugar and, reacted with Michael acceptors, it gave cyclopropanation reactions.

Dimethylsulfonium acetylmethoxycarbonylmethylide (Ia) was found to react with quinoline 1-oxide (II) in the presence of benzoyl chloride to give three compounds : 1-methoxycarbonyl-2-oxo-3-(2-quinolyl)-1, 2-dihydropyrrolo[1, 2-α]quinoline (III), 1-methoxycarbonyl-2-oxo-1, 3-di (2-quinolyl)-1, 2-dihydropyrrolo[1, 2-α]quinoline (IV), and 2-benzoyloxy-1-methoxycarbonyl-3-(2-quinolyl) pyrrolo[1, 2-α]quinoline (V). Similarly, the reaction of dimethylsulfonium diacetylmethylide (Ib) with II gave 4-benzoyl-1-methyl-2-methylthio-3-oxo-3H-pyrido[1, 2-α]quinoline (XII).

Abstract Tropylium ion reacted with stable sulfur ylides accompanying with the rearrangement of the seven membered ring to afford benzal derivatives. Analogous reaction of alkoxytropylium ion afforded o- and p-alkoxybenzylidene derivatives.
