Stability of rock wedges in tunnel roofs

The stability of an overhanging wedge in a tunnel roof subjected to a stress field is evaluated. Closed form solutions are derived for symmetric and asymmetric wedges on the basis of an elastoplastic approach. The importance of the deformability of the symmetric wedge on the stress redistribution and factor of safety of the wedge is investigated. A non-linear stress-strain law is suggested for the joints forming the wedge. The analytical solutions are compared to numerical ones for various geometries and mechanical properties.

More rapid analysis of rock slopes

When the normals to two discontinuities forming a tetrahedral wedge in a rock slope lie in the opposite halves of a spherical projection divided by a diameter through the line of intersection of the discontinuities, sliding will take place down the line of intersection of the discontinuities if this is statically possible. This new criterion simplifies the analysis of the stability of rock wedges whose motion is driven only by gravity and resisted only by friction. A factor of safety can be simply calculated for all these wedges from plots of the normals to discontinuities on an overlay of a polar, equal-area spherical projection to which the great circles of a similar equatorial projection have been added. Influence of the in-situ stress field and joint stiffness on rock wedge stability in underground openings

Rock wedges in the roofs of underground excavations may be wholly or partly self-supporting due to the mobilization of shear resistance on discontinuities bounding such wedges. The extent of the mobilization, which occurs as the wedge deforms, is markedly influenced by the magnitude of the stress field tangential to the opening and the relative stiffness of the intact rock and the shear and normal stiffnesses of the discontinuities. Analytical and numerical models are described for determining the upper and lower bounds of the failure loads for two-dimensional asymmetric and symmetric rock wedges. Experiments conducted on physical models indicate that the stability of rock wedges may be substantially reduced by loosening and that the analytical solutions may overestimate the load necessary to cause failure. Excavation unloading effect in rock wedge stability analysis

The stability of a rock wedge resting on two intersecting discontinuities is examined under excavation unloading forces. The variation of the factor of safety as well as the external force required to restore a certain factor of safety is examined for a range of values of ambient stress coefficient and for a variation in the distance of a crack from the cut face of the wedge.

Hydrodynamical Stability of Salt Wedge

The hydrodynamical stability of a salt wedge is examined in terms of a simple example consisting of two layers of fluids in uniform shear. The upper fluid is lighter than the lower fluid and is bounded by a free surface at the top. Salt wedge stability has been studied through the growing and decaying modes of the system. Neutral stability curves have been established in terms of the dimensionless parameter, the wave number, and the thickness ratio of the upper layer to the shear layer. The stabilizing influences of the free surface and the interface have been found to be dependent on the wave number. Critical values of the dimensionless parameter have been predicted to occur between 0.1 and 0.6 (depending on the thickness of the upper layer), below which stable flows can persist; its minimum value (0.1) agrees with the experimental measurements made by Esch.

Stability of wedge and channel flow of highly viscous and elastic liquids

Experiments are reported on the flow of a highly elasticoviscous polymer solution into a slit, in which instability was observed. This instability was manifest as an irregularity in the output along the slit and as an unsteadiness in the extentional flow into the slit. The onset of irregular flow was well-defined, and its intensity increased with flow rate. Similar results were noted for axial flow into a tube. Simplified linearized stability analyses bearing on the observed flow are given briefly in Appendixes 2 and 3. It is concluded that existing theories are inadequate to explain the observed phenomena.

AbstractWe obtain a simple new proof of Bonsall's characterization theorem for type 1 semi-algebras of continuous functions. An extension of our methods produces several new results on stability properties of wedges.
