Identification of priority areas to provide insights for ecological protection planning: A case study in Hechi, China

The prolonged disregard for the Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) has limited the effectiveness of regional ecological conservation. However, identifying and safeguarding areas with high GEP, and optimizing their distribution and spatial structure, are of great immense for preserving ecosystem services (ESs). Our goal is to refine the spatial configuration of ecological network (EN), and subsequently augment and sustain the stability of ESs. We have specifically chosen Hechi City, situated in the Karst region of southwest China, as our case study. Firstly, we devised a GEP evaluation system to pinpoint crucial areas as ecological sources. Subsequently, we utilized the circuit theory and minimum cumulative resistance model to construct the preliminary EN. Through the circuit theory model identified the key nodes in the EN and optimized the EN. Finally, by combining complex network analysis methods, we evaluated the robustness and topological characteristics of the EN. Our results showed that the area of ecological sources increased from 71 to 161 after optimization. The number of corridors increased from 161 to 423, resulting in an overall increment of 8.8% in the source area. The connectivity and stability of the optimized EN can be significantly enhanced. The addition of new nodes increases the overall importance of the network, making the importance of each node more balanced. Additionally, the complex network analysis method provided a detailed understanding about the spatial topology of the overall and local elements of the EN. The study results can provide a valuable reference for optimizing, restoring and evaluating ENs in karst areas.

Recognition of Area without Understory Vegetation Based on the RGB-UAV Ultra-High Resolution Images in Red Soil Erosion Area

Understory vegetation plays an important ecological role in maintaining the diversity of the ecosystem, the stability of ecosystem services, and the accumulation of nutrient elements, as an important part of a forest ecosystem. In this study, a new method of recognizing areas without understory vegetation is proposed. The method makes full use of the advantages of spectral characteristics, spatial structure information and temporal resolution of UAV images, and can quickly and simply distinguish understory, without vegetation cover. Combined with fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) and vegetation dispersion, understory, with no vegetation area, can be successfully recognized, and the Pr, Re and F1 are all above 85%. The proportion of bare soil under forest in our study area is 20.40%, 19.98% and even 41.69%. The study area is located in Changting County, Fujian Province, which is a typical red soil area in China where serious soil erosion is taking place in the forest. The method provides a promising, quick and economic way of estimating understory vegetation coverage with high spatial accuracy.

Vegetation Productivity and Precipitation Use Efficiency across the Yellow River Basin: Spatial Patterns and Controls

In arid and semi-arid climate zones, understanding the spatial patterns and biogeographical mechanisms of net primary production (NPP) and precipitation use efficiency (PUE) is crucial for assessing the function and stability of ecosystem services, as well as directing ecological restoration. Although the vegetation coverage has changed dramatically after the construction of several ecological restoration projects, due to limited observation data, fewer studies have provided a thorough understanding of NPP and PUE’s recent spatial patterns and the controlling factors of different vegetation types in the Yellow River Basin (YRB). To narrow this gap, we integrated remote-sensing land-cover maps with long-term MODIS NPP and meteorological datasets to comprehend NPP and PUE spatial patterns in YRB. Furthermore, we applied structural equation models (SEM) to estimate the effect intensity of NPP and PUE controlling factors. The results showed that along geographical coordinates NPP and PUE decreased from southeast to northwest and trends were roughly consistent along latitude, longitude, and elevation gradients with segmented patterns of increasing and decreasing trends. As for climate gradients, NPP showed significant linear positive and negative trends across the mean annual precipitation (MAP) and the arid index (AI), while segmented changes for PUE. However, the mean annual average temperature (MAT) showed a positive slope for below zero temperature and no change above zero temperature for both NPP and PUE. SEM results suggested that AI determined the spatial pattern of NPP, whereas PUE was controlled by MAP and NPP. As the AI becomes higher in the further, vegetation tends to have decreased NPP with higher sensitivity to water availability. While artificial vegetation had a substantially lower NPP than original vegetation but increased water competition between the ecosystem and human society. Hence further optimization of artificial vegetation is needed to satisfy both ecological and economic needs. This study advanced our understanding of spatial patterns and biogeographic mechanisms of NPP and PUE at YRB, therefore giving theoretical guidance for ecological restoration and ecosystem function evaluation in the face of further climate change.

Habitat compression indices for monitoring ocean conditions and ecosystem impacts within coastal upwelling systems

Upwelling ecosystems are characterized by intense seasonal productivity that supports highly dynamic species populations, high diversity of mid and upper trophic levels, and a myriad of important fisheries. Climate variability and long-term change will impact upwelling intensity, timing and persistence, thereby potentially threatening resilience of coastal food webs and stability of ecosystem services. The spatial footprint of cool upwelled waters in the surface mixed-layer supports trophic transfer and ultimately the productivity of fisheries. The spatial area of upwelled water in eastern boundary upwelling systems can vary dramatically in response to both local and remote atmospheric forcing. These variations contribute to dynamic habitats that impact the structure, function, and spatial characteristics of marine ecosystems. We quantified the variability in “cool-water thermal habitat” area as a new ecological indicator, the Habitat Compression Index (HCI), for the nearshore (within 150 km of the coast) waters of the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME). The HCI can be easily updated from ocean model products and satellite observations of sea surface temperature. We describe standardization of the HCI, regional variability, and evaluate HCI relationships with other indicators commonly used to inform ecosystem context within the CCLME. Importantly, our approach to calculating the HCI is easily extendable to other upwelling ecosystems. Further, we discuss the management context of the HCI such as assessing risk of whale entanglement in a highly profitable fishery, and implications for monitoring ecosystem shifts in coastal upwelling systems and the fisheries they support.

Crop Diversification for Improved Weed Management: A Review

Weeds are among the major constraints to any crop production system, reducing productivity and profitability. Herbicides are among the most effective methods to control weeds, and reliance on herbicides for weed control has increased significantly with the advent of herbicide-resistant crops. Unfortunately, over-reliance on herbicides leads to environmental-health issues and herbicide-resistant weeds, causing human health and ecological concerns. Crop diversification can help manage weeds sustainably in major crop production systems. It acts as an organizing principle under which technological innovations and ecological insights can be combined to manage weeds sustainably. Diversified cropping can be defined as the conscious inclusion of functional biodiversity at temporal and/or spatial levels to improve the productivity and stability of ecosystem services. Crop diversification helps to reduce weed density by negatively impacting weed seed germination and weed growth. Additionally, diversified farming systems are more resilient to climate change than monoculture systems and provide better crop yield. However, there are a few challenges to adopting a diversified cropping system, ranging from technology innovations, government policies, farm-level decisions, climate change, and market conditions. In this review, we discuss how crop diversification supports sustainable weed management, the challenges associated with it, and the future of weed management with respect to the diversification concept.

Spatial transferring of ecosystem services and property rights allocation of ecological compensation

Ecological compensation is an important means to maintain the sustainability and stability of ecosystem services. The property rights analysis of ecosystem services is indispensable when we implement ecological compensation. In this paper, ecosystem services are evaluated via spatial transferring and property rights analysis. Take the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) as an example, we attempt to classify the spatial structure of 31 categories of ecosystem services into four dimensions, i.e., local, regional, national and global ones, and divide the property rights structure into three types, i.e., private property rights, common property rights and state-owned property rights. Through the case study of forestry, farming industry, drainage area, development of mineral resources, nature reserves, functional areas, agricultural land expropriation, and international cooperation on ecological compensation, the feasible ecological compensation mechanism is illustrated under the spatial structure and property rights structure of the concerned ecosystem services. For private property rights, the ecological compensation mode mainly depends on the market mechanism. If the initial common property rights are “hidden,” the implementation of ecological compensation mainly relies on the quota market transactions and the state investment under the state-owned property rights, and the fairness of property rights is thereby guaranteed through central administration.

Stability of pollination services decreases with isolation from natural areas despite honey bee visits

Sustainable agricultural landscapes by definition provide high magnitude and stability of ecosystem services, biodiversity and crop productivity. However, few studies have considered landscape effects on the stability of ecosystem services. We tested whether isolation from florally diverse natural and semi-natural areas reduces the spatial and temporal stability of flower-visitor richness and pollination services in crop fields. We synthesised data from 29 studies with contrasting biomes, crop species and pollinator communities. Stability of flower-visitor richness, visitation rate (all insects except honey bees) and fruit set all decreased with distance from natural areas. At 1 km from adjacent natural areas, spatial stability decreased by 25, 16 and 9% for richness, visitation and fruit set, respectively, while temporal stability decreased by 39% for richness and 13% for visitation. Mean richness, visitation and fruit set also decreased with isolation, by 34, 27 and 16% at 1 km respectively. In contrast, honey bee visitation did not change with isolation and represented > 25% of crop visits in 21 studies. Therefore, wild pollinators are relevant for crop productivity and stability even when honey bees are abundant. Policies to preserve and restore natural areas in agricultural landscapes should enhance levels and reliability of pollination services.
