Rosai Dorfman Disease –A Rare Presentation: Case Report

We diagnosed it based on the characteristic cytological and histomorphological findings and confirmed it using Immunohistochemistry. Correlation of academic scores with blood group among first MBBS medical students

Background: The theory that there is a possible correlation between blood types and personality characteristics, other diseases, neurological disorders have been floating for a long time. Aim: The aim of our study was to explore a possible correlation between blood groups and scholastic performance in a large sample of medical students in south India. Materials: The study was conducted at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute, Chikkarayapuram, Chennai, India during October 2011- October 2014 Participants: Our study included 450 first year MBBS Medical students of the age group 18 to 19 years. Methods: Blood groups were collected and for assessment of scholastic performance we used +2 (twelfth standard) marks and overall internal assessment marks of the first MBBS students. Analysis of data was done using SPSS software (version 15). Conclusion: Our study revealed a considerable difference in academic scores between the blood groups O and A. Conversely, when the analysis was done individually for male and female students, there was significant correlation between academic scores. This implies gender was probably a confounding factor responsible for the initial difference in academic scores. So, the conclusion of our study was that there was no definite correlation between blood groups and academic scores.

Professional examination stress induced hemodynamic changes in first year MBBS students

Background: In recent years there has been a rising optimistic reception on the stresses involved in professional examination as this may affect student’s wellbeing, learning and academic performance.Competitiveness in today’s world has made stress inevitable in life. Medical students face stress in all stages of their academic career, including pre-clinical, paraclinical, and clinical years. The students of first M.B.B.S. probably face a major stress especially during the first credit examination. Materials and Methods: Study was carried out among first year MBBS students of Sri Muthukumaran Medical College during November 2012. First year MBBS students were randomly selected and first part of study captured personal data. The rest comprised anthropometric measurements [ht(cms) , wt(kgs)] and pulse rate and blood pressure recordings ten days before, on the day(one hour before the examination) and ten days after first credit examination. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software version 2.0. Student’s t- test was used to compare the data and p value < 0.05 was considered significant. Result: The overall response rate was 72% (108 out of 150 students). It was observed that 29 males (60 %) and 32 (53%) females students were having increase in pulse rate and systolic blood pressure one hour before the examination compared to pulse rate(PR) and systolic blood pressure(SBP) ten days before and ten days after the examination. Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was also increased one hour before the examination compared toten days before examination, though the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: It is evident that the first year MBBS students undergo stress during their academic examinations and need of the hour is to use interventions like social and psychological to improve the quality of life. Student advisors and counsellors can train students about stress management.
