A Case of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Kidney Manifesting After Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy for Renal Pelvic Calculi

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) of the kidney is a rare neoplasm usually associated with long-standing nephrolithiasis. This disease has a poor outcome as it is highly aggressive and presents at an advanced stage. In this case report, we offer the SCC of the kidney in a middle-aged man who underwent Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for long-standing renal stones. After a few days, there were recurrent episodes of pyelonephritis. After proper evaluation, renal mass was detected, and the patient underwent a radical nephrectomy. SCC was diagnosed from histopathology, and systemic therapy was started, but the patient died. So, the possibility of this rare neoplasm should be considered while treating long-standing nephrolithiasis. Bangladesh J. Urol. 2022; 25(1): 62-66

: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of kidney is very rare finding and is rarely reported in literature. The disease is very aggressive in nature and carries poor prognosis with 5yr survival rate of <10%. We report here a case of 48yr old female who presented with complaints of pain in left side of abdomen, intermittent fever and was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of kidney. The patient underwent radical nephrectomy.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney is a rare malignancy of the upper urothelium usually seen at advanced stage due to delay in diagnosis and or presentation. Mostly seen in patients with history of untreated chronic urolithiasis, chronic renal infection or analgesic abuse. A 46-years-old man who presented with right recurrent loin pain that radiates to the right groin of 10 years duration which worsened 2 weeks prior to presentation, he had history of recent haematuria, right loin pain, significant weight lost with associated history of untreated right renal calculi. General examination was not remarkable, ultrasound scan revealed a huge right renal mass with calculi. Intravenous urogram showed a non-functioning right kidney. Right radical nephrectomy was done, cut surface showed replacement of the renal parenchyma with greyish white tumour with stones in some blind calyxes. Histology revealed moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the right kidney. We report a case of moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the right kidney in a patient with a long history of untreated renal calculi. High index of suspicion for malignancy should be kept when seeing patients with long history of untreated renal calculi.

Serial Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography Scan Distinguishing Infected Seroma from Recurrence in a Necrotic Lymph Node in a Case of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Right Kidney.

Seroma can occur as a complication following nephroureterectomy. We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney, postnephroureterectomy where serial fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography images helped in distinguishing the diagnostic dilemma between lymph node recurrence and infected seroma.

Primary renal squamous cell carcinoma – A rare entity

Squamous cell carcinoma of kidney is the extremely rare entity of upper urinary tract neoplasm. The most common type of kidney cancer is clear cell renal cell carcinoma followed by papillary and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma. We report a case of renal cell carcinoma who presented with complaints of pain abdomen and hematuria. Radiologic investigation showed a renal mass and calculi in the left kidney. The patient subsequently underwent left radical nephrectomy. Pathological diagnosis of SCC of idney was made.We report a rare case of primary renal squamous cell carcinoma involving whole of the kidney. Renal Squamous Cell Carcinoma of a Native Kidney After Renal Transplant: A Case Report

BackgroundRenal squamous cell carcinoma is a rare primary tumor of the kidney that rapidly invades local structures and has a poor prognosis. Presentation is usually nonspecific and is associated with renal stone disease and chronic infection. Immunosuppressed renal transplant recipients are more likely to develop a malignancy than the general population. Squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney in the context of a renal transplant and long-term immunosuppression has not previously been described in the literature. Case ReportA 46-year-old white man with previous renal stones and recurrent urinary infections underwent a right nephrectomy and subsequent renal transplantation owing to failure of the remaining kidney. Five years posttransplant, an abdominal ultrasound scan was performed owing to recurrent urinary infections and ongoing pyuria. This was reported as normal, but he later developed a discharging sinus in his left flank. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a tracking perinephric abscess with an associated cystic lesion of the left kidney. A left nephrectomy was performed and histologic examination suggested an invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. The patient later required major surgery for chronic infection, and further imaging revealed metastatic disease, resulting in the decision to manage palliatively. ConclusionGiven the nonspecific nature of the symptoms and the poor prognosis, health care professionals should have a lower threshold for diagnostic imaging in these patients. Abdominal ultrasonography was unhelpful and only a later CT scan revealed the underlying malignancy. This should be expedited if there is a persistent abnormality on urinalysis. Once diagnosed, a change in immunosuppressant regime to include sirolimus should be considered.

The diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is usually unsuspected due to the rarity and inconclusive clinical and radiological features. Most of the patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage and are with poor outcome. Radical nephrectomy is the mainstay of the treatment. We reported a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney in a 50-year-old female who presented with the right sided abdomen pain. The patient was treated with radical nephrectomy.

Insidious onset of symptom and inconclusive clinical and radiological features leads to locally advanced or metastatic disease at presentation; resulting in poor prognosis. Here we are reporting two cases of squamous cell carcinoma of kidney having renal calculi to highlight its clinical presentation and to document the association of squamous cell carcinoma in longstanding nephrolithiasis due to its rarity.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of kidney: a case report

Neoplasms of the kidney are most commonly adenocarcinomas. Squamous cell carcinoma of renal pelvis and ureter are very rare and account for 6-15% of all renal tumours. Very few such cases have been reported. Most are associated with calculus disease or hydronephrosis. Our case was a 44year old female having pain & lump in right flank since six months. Contrast CT abdomen showed an 8.8x8.8x6.4 cm renal upper pole mass with well-defined rounded calcification invading directly into the liver. There was no calculus or hydronephrosis. Ultrasound guided tru-cut biopsy was inconclusive, showing only dysplastic cells. On exploration, the mass was found to be arising from postero-superior pole of right kidney, with direct invasion into the liver. A nephroureterectomy with wedge resection of liver was performed. Histopathology of the specimen showed well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of renal pelvis extending into liver.

Primary Well Differentiated Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Kidney: A Rare Entity

Cancers of the kidney and renal pelvis are the ninth most common malignant cancer and form the 12th most common cause of all cancer-related deaths. Among malignant renal tumors, squamous cell carcinoma is rare neoplasm and form only about 0.5–8%. We present a case of 60 years old male with complaints of pain in the loin and hematuria for past 2 months. The patient underwent nephrectomy for renal mass on ultrasonography (USG) and computerized tomography (CT) scan, which turned out to be squamous cell carcinoma on histopathological examination.

Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the kidney is a rare clinical entity involving the upper urinary tract.These patients characteristically presents in advanced stage. This rare malignancy of the kidney lacks the characteristic clinical presentation of common renal cell carcinoma like hematuria, pain and a palpable mass. We report a 60 year old male who presented with a history of recurrent colicky right flank pain for 6 months duration which worsened in intensity and increased in frequency from last 1 month. He also had a history of untreated right renal calcular disease. On evaluation, he was found to have right renal mass with CT guided biopsy revealing Squamous cell carcinoma of kidney.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of kidney - a case report of unusual local recurrence with literature review

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney is a rare clinical entity. Primary squamous cell carcinoma is more frequently reported in urinary bladder and male urethra than in kidney. Primary renal squamous cell carcinoma (RSCC) accounts for less than 5% of urothelial tumours in urinary system. Very few cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma of kidney have been reported in the world literature. Only forty-six cases over forty four years had been reported from Mayo Clinic. These neoplasms are highly aggressive and locally advanced or metastatic at the time of presentation. Here we report such a case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of kidney in a 50-year-old lady at a locally recurrent stage with fistulous tract formation. Palliative radiotherapy came out to be a good clinical modality even in locally recurrent stage in this patient. Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Kidney – Rarity Redefined: Case Series with Review of Literature

Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis and ureter is a rare malignancy, having an incidence of 6% to 15% (of all urothelial tumors). Few cases of primary squamous cell carcinoma of kidney have been reported in the world literature. The insidious onset of symptom and lack of any pathognomonic sign, leads to delay in the diagnosis and subsequent treatment, resulting in grave prognosis for these patients. Herein, we report 5 cases (three males and two females) of advanced primary squamous cell carcinoma of kidney that were treated at our centre during the last 6 years. The average age was 57 years (range 50-65 years). Three of the patients had history of long standing renal calculus disease while 3 had history of smoking and 1 patient had history of analgesic abuse. These cases were unique because in few of them; all the calyces were involved by the tumor - a field change type of pattern normally seen in transitional cell carcinoma of the kidney. In one patient, thrombus of the inferior vena cava was also present along with infi ltration of the duodenum by the tumor. Despite prompt nephroureterectomy, 4 out of 5 patients died within 6 months of treatment. Only one patient was surviving at 5 months of follow up. Nephrectomy with or without ureterectomy is the treatment of choice in patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney. There is lack of evidence of survival benefi ts of chemo-radiation following surgery but is advocated by some with the hope that it might increase survival. Biopsy from the renal pelvis or calyceal wall is advocated at the time of stone removal in patients having long-standing history of large renal calculi or staghorn calculus since such patients are capable of harboring occult or overt malignancy.

A Study On Culprit Factors, Ultimately Demanding Nephrectomy.

Nephrectomy is a major operation requiring skilled and experienced hands to perform. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This astudy was performed to identify major culprit factors, which demands nephrectomy, at all. And to identify association between renal stone and squamous cell carcinoma, if any. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 78 cases of nephrectomy were collected over a two year study period. All cases were examined for their gross pathology and histopathogical examination was done using H& E staining. CONCLUSION: We found chronic pyelonephritis to be the most common lesion, followed byrenal cell carcinoma and pyonephrosis next in frequency. A statistically significant association was found between renal stone and squamous cell carcinoma of kidney (p=0.1814).

Simultaneous renal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of kidney

A unique case of a collision tumor of the kidney composed of a renal cell carcinoma and a squamous cell carcinoma is reported. Although a few cases of combined tumors of the kidney have been reported previously, we were unable to find any similar case in the literature. Squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney usually behaves aggressively. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment before the tumor has extended beyond the capsule offer the best hope of cure.
