The one-day colloquium on photoemission, organized jointly by the Institute and Society and the IEE's Professional Group on Electronic Valves and Tubes attracted 180 people, including 25 from overseas, to Savoy Place on 20 September. This gives an indication of the wide interest in this specialist field, which is of concern to both the sponsoring bodies. The papers presented generally reflected the three aspects predominant in the subject: understanding of the physics of photoemission, the search for new photoemitters and work on improving existing photocathodes.
