Effect of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag, Silica Fume and Nano Silica on the Strength & Durability Properties of Concrete: A Contemporary Review

This paper provides a contemporary review of the usage of Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS), Silica Fume, and Nano Silica in Materialistic form over the deterministic aspects of conventional concrete. The main purpose of this literature learning is to enumerate the effect of GGBS, Silica Fume, and Nano Silica on strength of concrete. The GGBS, Silica Fume and Nano-silica is a restored substitute as compared to orthodox additives like CaCl2 and SiO2 because of their effectiveness with a lesser amount of consumption. It was found that the GGBS, Silica Fume, and nano-silica have an optimistic effect on the unconfined compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength of concrete.

Effect compressive strength and split tensile strength of concrete using aggregate from Tana Toraja district with fly ash substitution

Development in Indonesia is increasing day by day. This has resulted in the construction sector from year to year experiencing a lot of progress both in terms of planning/design and in terms of updating the construction methods used. Tana Toraja regency is precise in Saluputti districts. the Maulu river is a source of a lot of coarse and fine aggregates that can be used as a material for mixing concrete. Because this area is the meeting point between the largest rivers. especially in Tana Toraja. Therefore. in this study. coarse and fine aggregates from Tana Toraja. Saluputti district are used as research objects with fly ash as an additional ingredient. The research objective was to determine the effect of fly ash substitution on compressive strength and split tensile in concrete with Tana Toraja aggregate and to determine the characteristics of the concrete produced using the aggregate from Tana Toraja with fly ash substitution. The research method is a sample testing method. in which 72 samples were tested consisting of 36 samples of compressive strength and 36 samples of split tensile strength. The test was carried out at the Concrete Structure and Material Laboratory. Department of Civil Engineering. Universitas Kristen Indonesia Paulus – Makassar South Sulawesi. The results showed that the use of fly ash as a partial substitute for cement would reduce the strength of concrete compared to concrete without the use of fly ash. The greater the level of fly ash given. the strength of the concrete will be reduced by using the aggregate from Tana Toraja district.

Pengaruh Penambahan Serbuk Seng (Zno Powder) Terhadap Berat, Kuat Tekan Dan Kuat Tarik Belah Beton

Indonesia is a developing country that has quite advanced industrial prospects, one of which is the zinc industry. Increased zinc production, will also increase zinc waste. Based on the nature of ZnO which readily reacts with other compounds, this compound can be used as a mixture in making concrete so that it can produce quite good structural strength. This study aims to determine how the effect of using zinc powder on weight, compressive strength and split tensile strength of concrete. The variations in the addition of zinc powder consisted of 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% by weight of the cement used. The test object used is a cylinder with a size of 15 cm x 30 cm. Tests for weight, compressive strength and split tensile strength were carried out when the concrete was 28 days old. The results obtained are for the weight of concrete with variations in the addition of zinc powder as much as 0%, 0.25%, 0.75% and 1% respectively of 2294 Kg / m3, 2305 Kg / m3, 2311 Kg / m3, 2305 Kg / m3, 2323 Kg / m3. Meanwhile, the compressive strength is 30.49 MPa, 30.356 MPa, 32.92 MPa, 32.69 MPa and 31.573 MPa. And for the tensile strength of concrete with the same variations, namely 11.306 MPa, 10.597 MPa, 11.976 MPa, 13.07 MPa and 13.426 MPa.

Behaviour of Concrete Filled Double Skin (CFDS) Steel Tube by Partial Replacement of Coarse Aggregate with Brickbats

Objectives: To find the optimum percentage replacement of brickbats in concrete by performing fresh and hardened concrete tests and is incorporated into CFDS steel tube column to study its behaviour analytically. Methods: The behaviour of a double skin CFST column with brickbats partially substituting the coarse material with Brickbats. Part of the coarse aggregate was replaced with grouted class I brick bats with percentages of 5 to 25%. A study of the compressive and split tensile strength of concrete was conducted fresh and hardened tests on concrete specimens (cubes and cylinders). Performance of CFDS steel tube column partially replacing coarse aggregate with brickbats is examined analytically using ANSYS. Findings: The compressive and split tensile strength of 10 percent replacement brickbats improved by 8.5 and 13 percent, respectively, while the compressive and split tensile strength of 5 percent replacement brickbats increased by 1.67 and 6 percent, respectively. When compared to nominal cube strength, partially replace brickbats compressive strength increases gradually up to 10% brickbat replacement and then tends to decrease from 15percent brickbat replacement. When compared to different mixtures, it was discovered that adding 10% brickbats increases strength, and this amount was deemed the best mix proportion. The highest load taken by CFDS with 10% brickbats is 649.36kN, whereas standard CFDS is 705.16kN. The CFDS tube was replaced by CFDS tube, which took 1.15 percent more load than brick bats. Novelty/Applications: This research yields good result and can be adopted for the construction of tall composite buildings. Effect of Curing Methods on Strength of Self-Compacting Concrete

In this paper three different curing techniques with variation in compressive strength of medium strength, self-compacted concrete are discussed. To achieve the mix design of medium strength self-compacting concrete initially numbers of trials were carried out. Super plasticizer of 0.7% and an internal curing agent, Superabsorbent Polymer of 0.3% together to the weight of cement were added. Once the mix design was achieved, as per ASTM standard three batches of concrete cubes were casted. Slump flow test was carried out in order to determine workability of self-compacting concrete. Concrete cube cured in a curing tank in the laboratory was taken as first batch. The second batch was cured by the application of an internal curing compound. The third batch was cured by Gunny bag Method. Three cubes were tested for compressive strength, from every batch at 7 days, 28 days and 60 days age of concrete. The split tensile strength of concrete was also considered. Graphs were drawn with analyzed results. So it was concluded that to get improved strength and sustainability of self-compacted concrete in areas with shortage of water, curing compound found to be more effective.

Mechanical Properties of Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete with Recycled Aggregates

ABSTRACT Scarcity of the construction resources such as money, labour, material, land and technology is creating a big chaos and so the nations are facing problems of low GDP’s. This research focuses on reuse of laboratory waste used aggregate and studying the mechanical properties of concrete with glass fiber and varying percentages of recycled aggregates. The study focuses on use of higher percentages of recycled aggregates and analyse optimum mix that can be used for structural applications by adding glass fibers without compromising the strength parameters. The behaviour of compressive, flexural and split tensile strength of concrete using glass fibers is studied where normal aggregates are partially replaced with recycled aggregates in proportions of 40%, 60%, 70%, 80% and 100% and usage of 0.25% glass fibers as addition by weight. After analyzing results it was observed that on addition of recycled aggregates strength decreases but mix designation CR80G0.25 (80% replacement of normal aggregates with recycled aggregates and addition of 0.25% of glass fibers) has least reduction 8.23% in compressive strength. Flexural and split tensile strength shows a reduction of 2.95% and 1.76% respectively for mix designation CR70G0.25 (70% replacement of normal aggregates with recycled aggregates and addition of 0.25% of glass fibers). This shows that Mix designation CR80G0.25 can be used for compression members like columns in buildings and Mix designation CR70G0.25 can be used in construction of beams and slabs.

Thermal Conductivity and Strength Properties of Nanosilica and GGBS Incorporated Concrete Specimens

An important property which affects the heat transfer process in buildings and to minimize the usage of artificial energy in buildings is thermal conductivity. The transfer of heat through walls and roofs determines the amount of artificial energy required in the buildings. The conventional methods used to determine the thermal conductivity of buildings are transient and steady state methods. The objective of this paper is to measure the thermal conductivity of concrete specimens replacing nanosilica and GGBS by weight of ordinary Portland cement. Nanosilica was replaced by weight of cement in different proportions ranging from 1% to 5%. Addition of nanosilica and GGBS in concrete improves the compressive strength and split tensile strength of concrete by around 10%. Improvement in strength properties is mainly due to densification of concrete microstructure by filling pores in concrete specimens. In addition to the strength characteristics, nanosilica incorporated concrete specimens showed better thermal resistance as compared with conventional concrete mix. Lower heat transfer rate is due to the better particle packing nature of nanoparticles in concrete. Nanosilica acts as better heat retarding agent in concrete and thus it minimizes the use of artificial energy in the buildings. It is concluded that utilization of nanosilica reduces the heat transfer rate in to the buildings and the optimum amount of nanosilica was found to be 3% by weight of cement.

Experimental investigation of the effect of Nano-silica on the mechanical properties of concrete

Construction Industry is one of the leader in deterioration of environment. The production of cement consumes large quantities of raw materials, energy, heat and releases greenhouse gases. This paper focus to minimize the use of cement in the production of concrete. Concrete cubes and cylinders were prepared with 0,2, 4 and 6% nano-silica and cured. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength, Split tensile strength, Flexural Strength and Sulphate attack of concrete were obtained and compared with conventional concrete for 7 days, 14 days and 28days curing. The tests results shows 4% of nano-silica in concrete increases the Compressive and Split tensile strength of concrete.

Use of bamboo fiber on the relationship between compressive strength and split tensile strength of high strength concrete

This study was to determine the influence of fiber bamboo on the split tensile strength of concrete and to know the relationship between compressive and tensile strength. In the concrete mixture, fibre bamboo is added with a percentage of 0%, 0.5%, 1% and 1.5% of cement. Concrete strength of the design is 60 MPa with w/cvalue of 0.25. The coarse aggregate used had a maximum diameter of 12 mm, while the plasticizer used was 2% of cement. Testing was carried out at 28 days. For 0% fiber bamboo, the obtained strength was 62.47 MPa and a split tensile strength was 4.15 MPa. For 0.5% fiber, the obtained strength was 59.83 MPa and a split tensile strength was 5.12 MPa. For 1% fiber, the obtained strength value was 59.07 MPa and a split tensile strength was 5.91 MPa. For 1.5% fiber, the obtained strength value was 54.92 MPa and a split tensile strength was 6.48 MPa. Using fiber bamboo of the test shows a decrease in compressive strength, where the use of 0.5% fiber bamboo in concrete was the most optimal value. The use of the highest-fiber bamboo content of 1.5% achieved the optimum value of split tensile strength of 6.48 MPa.

Research on Dynamic Splitting Tensile Mechanical Properties of Carbon Nanofibers Reinforced Concrete

The dynamic splitting tensile tests of five kinds of concrete with different content of carbon nanofibers were carried out by split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) device. The dynamic splitting tensile mechanical properties of carbon nanofibers reinforced concrete (CNFC) are analyzed in terms of the relationships between the stress-time curve, dynamic splitting tensile strength, dynamic splitting tensile increase factor (DTF) and the content of carbon nanofibers as well as strain rate. The results show that: the dynamic splitting tensile strength of concrete is enhanced by carbon nanofibers; at the same strain rate level, with the increase of the content of carbon nanofibers, the dynamic splitting tensile strength of concrete shows a trend of first increasing and then decreasing; when the content of carbon nanofibers is the same, as the strain rate increases, the dynamic splitting tensile strength of concrete continues to increase.

Strength and microstructure correlation of binary cement blends in presence of waste marble powder

Marble industry produces stone slurry and solid waste that is not properly disposed and is usually dumped in open land which leads to land contamination. Marble waste deposition is one of the major environmental issues in the marble industry. This study emphasizes the reuse of waste material in concrete as a sustainable construction practice. The work is based on substitution of cement partially by marble powder (0, 5, 10, 15, & 20% by weight) to produce grades M30 concrete with water cement ratio as 0.45. The compressive, flexural and split tensile strength of concrete was analyzed at 7 and 28 days. The study reveals that by substituting 5% of cement by marble dust powder, there was an initial strength improvement up to 25 percent for both 7 and 28 days of curing. However, afterwards with increasing marble dust substitution, there was an irregular decrease in strength for all the mixes. The microstructure studies showed improved pore structure due to filling effect of marble powder at lower substitution. The experimental work signifies the use of marble powder at an optimum amount for enhancing the strength of concrete. Thus, marble powder incorporation in concrete can be used to reduce its harmful environmental effects and to produce economically beneficial green concrete.

Influence of carbon steel fibers on the flexural crack width of RC beam

Reinforced concrete beams are the significant structural elements in the structure. They improve resistivity against flexural loads. The concrete portion in the reinforced concrete beam is good in compression but at the time of bending reinforcement will take about the structural element. When the flexural stresses exceed the flexural capacity of the reinforced concrete beam cracks will occur at the flexural portion. In this investigation for avoiding and delaying flexural cracks, carbon steel fibres are incorporated into the concrete mix. The carbon steel fibres are added in concrete concerning the total volume of concrete. Different percentages like 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% of carbon steel fibres are added to the conventional concrete. Another side large amount of CO2 emission occurs while manufacturing the cement in the industry. Because of that the cement content is replaced 30% with GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag). The mix design used in this investigation is M30 with a water-cement ratio of 0.4. Cubes, cylinders and RC beams of 1.5 m X 0.23 m X 0.23 m are cast and placed in curing for 7 days and 28 days respectively. In this investigation single crack and multiple crack behaviour is analysed. The compression and split tensile strength of concrete are enhanced by incorporating carbon steel fibres in the conventional concrete. The RC beams with 28 days effective curing were tested under the loading frame of 2000T capacity. The result shows the initial crack propagation time is increased by increasing fibres content because at the time of crack propagation fibers present in the concrete mix will resist the entry of crack in the concrete and crack width is reduced by increasing fibres content compared with conventional concrete.

EFFECT OF PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF CEMENT WITH EGGSHELL ASH (ESA) ADMIXED WITH PLASTIMENT BV-40 IN CONCRETE

The use of eggshells ash for partial cement replacement in concrete has been well established in earlier studies. The effect of such partial replacement of cement with an eggshell ash and Plastiment BV-40 was investigated in this. Tests including slump test, compressive strength test, splitting tensile strength test and concrete density test were carried out on concrete in which cement was partially replaced with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% eggshell ash and presented. The test results indicate that eggshell ash decreases the workability of concrete. Also, for the compressive strength at 5% content, after which there is decrease in the compressive strength with increase in the ash content. Furthermore, eggshell ash is found to increase the concrete splitting tensile strength. It was concluded that eggshell ash has the potential of being utilized in concrete as partial replacement of cement.

A novel method to predict pozzolanic nature of concrete with sintered clay using soft computing techniques

This research focuses on studying the effect of different pozzolanic materials (Metakaolin, fly ash, silica ash, micro clay, ordinary clay and their combinations) on strength of concrete cured for a period of time - 56 days. This work primarily deals with the compressive strength and split tensile strength of concrete. First four mixes were made by adding 1-2% of pozzolanic materials in concrete. Next five mixes were made by increasing the percentage of clay and lime as a substitute of cement in concrete. A comparative study is done between experimental data and predicted data. Bountiful research works were done using soft computing tools to predict the strength characteristics of concrete, in this work we had employed Levenberg-Marquardt and Bayesian Regularization approach to predict. ANN is employed to measure the outcome performance of admixtures added while varying the curing period. Best fit models were arrived using back propagation method of ANN, R2 values were obtained in the range of 0.91 showing the effectiveness of the study. It is suggested that this proposed algorithm can be employed to predict the strength characteristics of concrete.

Mechanical Properties of Concrete by using M- Sand and Basalt Fibre in Concrete

This paper presents the impact of the basalt fibre in concrete.Basalt fibre is a relatively new material and it is a high performance non-metallic fibre made from basalt rock melted at a high temperature. It is economical and having good strength characteristics, and also resists against temperature and alkaline environment. The Main aim of this paper is to find the compressive, flexural and split tensile strength of Concrete with M-sand and Basalt Fibre. The length of basalt fibre 12mm was used with in the range of 0.1% to 0.3%with total volume of concrete. Due to lack of river sand, it is partially replaced with M-sand by 50%and 60% in this work. This paper shows the enhancement of mechanical properties of concrete by adding Basalt fibre and partial replacement of river sand with M-sand.

Predicting the split tensile strength of Saw Dust Ash - Fine aggregate concrete

The industrial waste, Saw Dust Ash (SDA), has played a key role in concrete mix research. It has served as an alternative or complementary material to some of the traditional materials of concrete. In this study, SDA was used to replace 5% of the fine aggregate (sand), as the other three ingredients, cement, granite, and water remained constant. Scheffe’s simplex lattice was used for five mix ratios in a {5,2} component mix, which resulted in additional ten mix ratios. Additional fifteen mix ratios were generated for verification and testing. The thirty concrete mix ratios were subjected to laboratory experiments to determine the 28 days Split Tensile Strengths. The results of the first fifteen Split Tensile strengths were used for the calibration of the model constant coefficients using Scheffe’s simplex approach, while those from the second fifteen were used for the model verification. A mathematical regression model was derived from the experimental results, with which the Split Tensile Strengths were predicted. The derived model was subjected to a two-tailed t-test with 5% significance, which ascertained the model to be adequate with an R2 value of 0.8099. The study revealed that SDA can replace 5% of fine aggregate and promote sustainability, without compromising the 28 days Split Tensile Strength.

Enhancement of Properties of Geopolymer concrete with Crimped Steel Fibers

Geopolymer technology is nascent technology in the world of concrete. Indian standard code is not available for geopolymer concrete. However, at the initial stage, mix design of plain geopolymer concrete is done by testing various parameters. Calcium based, sodium based and potassium based solutions are available in the market. Sodium based alkaline solutions are used in the present research. Here, 100% replacement of cement is done with fly ash. Fly ash used is Pozzocrete 63. Geopolymer concrete with addition of crimped steel fibers are used in the research. Molarity is finalized as 13M and ratio of Na2SiO3/NaOH is finalized as 2.Alkaline solution to fly ash ratio is taken in the research. Crimped steel fibers of aspect ratio 70 and 100 are added in geopolymer concrete. Results obtained shows that as aspect ratio of crimped steel fibers increases there is increase in compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength of concrete. It is observed that as the aspect ratio of fibers increased up to some extent, its compressive strength is also increased.

The Effect of Roving Fibers Addition on the Compressive and Tensile Strength of No-Fines Concrete

The addition of fiber in the concrete mixture has proven to increase the tensile strength of concrete for non-structural purposes. Natural materials and easily obtainable can be generally used for non – structural purposes. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of roving fiber addition on the compressive and tensile strength of the no-fines concrete. The results of this study were expected to be an input for the society, especially for the construction materials industry, and can be useful for further research. The test specimens used in this study, for each type of variable, were 3 cylinders for compressive strength test and 3 cylinders for tensile strength test. The volume ratio between the cement and gravel on the mixture was as follows: 1: 5, 1: 6, 1: 7, 1:8, 1: 9. In addition, the length of the roving fibers used in this study was 3 cm. The addition of roving fibers of each mixture was 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% of the weight of the cement. The results showed that the addition of roving fiber increased the compressive strength and tensile strength of no-fines concrete. The optimal compressive strength was achieved at the 5% addition of fiber roving. Furthermore, the optimal splitting tensile strength of concrete was achieved on the 5% addition of fiber roving.

The effects of different polymer materials on concrete properties containing superabsorbent polymers (SAP)-experimental study

The use of admixtures in concrete production has become more common in the last decades due to the promising development in concrete technology. Each one of these admixtures can be used to enhance one or more of concrete properties in the fresh, hardened or both concrete conditions. Superabsorbent Polymers (SAP) is one of the polymer admixtures that is recently used for internal curing by controlling and absorbing water within concrete. This could provide several benefits, most important being, durability of concrete. The aim of this study is to experimentally investigate the effect of different polymeric materials represented by Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and Polypropylene Fibers (PF) on the mechanical properties of concrete containing Superabsorbent Polymers (SAP). The results of this study revealed the fact that using SAP in concrete mixes improves durability. Despite this, a notable reduction in compressive strength can be observed. The use of both SAP and PF had an undesirable influence on the strength and workability of concrete. Using SBR in concrete mixes containing SAP assisted in recuperating the hardened splitting tensile strength of concrete.

Effect of Silica Fume and Fly Ash as Partial Replacement of Cement on Strength of Concrete

Concrete is the most versatile construction material because it can be designed to withstand most stringent environments while taking on the most inspirational forms. It is one of the most frequently used building materials. Nowadays, most concrete mixture contains auxiliary cementitious material which forms part of the cementitious constituent. In this era, as the growth of world economy increased, the demand of concrete made buildings are also increased. So for this the demand of cement is also increased. Unfortunately, production of cement involves emission of large amounts of carbon–dioxide gas into the atmosphere which is very harmful for the environment. Cement manufacturing industries emits 5% of global carbon di-oxide which in turns leads to the main causes for the global warming. To decrease the effects we can change the cement with industrial by- product like silica fume, fly-ash and so on. Basically the Fly Ash and Silica Fumes are industrial by-products. The consumption of these industrial by products is becoming popular throughout the world because of the minimization of their potential perilous effects on environment. This paper investigates the individual effects of Silica Fume and Fly Ash as a partial replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) on compressive strength, flexural tensile strength and split tensile strength of Concrete.
