Construction and Standardisation of Parental Aspiration Scale

The investigator constructed a scale on parental aspiration about their children career. The scale was developed and standardized by administrating it on a sample of 200 selected parents through quota sampling technique. At the preliminary stage it was planned to construct a five-point ‘Likert-type scale’ so that the test items were constructed in form of statements. At first 45 statements were prepared on the basis of suggestion from experts, some statements were modified, and some were removed. Finally the scale was developed by reducing the number of statements from 30–45 and these statements classified into six areas, namely educational attitude, encouragement and motivation, future concern, participation in school activities, socialisation of child, time and talking together. All statements are positive in nature. The reliability of scale was determined through test–retest and spilt-half method. The test–retest and split-half reliability coefficient of scale came out to be 0.89 and 0.87 for the assessment of validity; scale was sent to renowned subject experts. The item analysis was done to eliminate the inconsistent items from tool.

Improving Students’ Performance in Stoichiometry through the Implementation of Collaborative Learning

The study was designed to foster the implementation of collaborative learning in stoichiometry among secondary school students. It was hypothesized that students who were exposed to collaborative learning will not perform significantly better than those exposed to lecture method. The design of the study was a pretest – posttest non-equivalent control group design. Two hundred and eighty seven Senior Secondary class 2 students from Special Science Schools in Anambra State, Nigeria participated in the study. The reliability of the instrument, Stoichiometry Achievement Test (SAT) was established using split-half reliability coefficient. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the null hypothesis after obtaining the mean of the pretest and posttest scores. The results revealed that collaborative learning significantly enhanced students’ performance in stoichiometry, as students who were exposed to collaborative learning outperformed those exposed to lecture method. Based on the findings of the study educational practices in Nigeria were urged to promote and implement collaborative learning and decrease on the structure of transmission model.

Construction and Psychometric Properties of Sentence Repetition Test (SRT) for Latvian Primary School Children

This study was conducted to determine psychometric properties of newly developed Sentence Repetition Test (SRT). The test evaluates ability to recall orally presented sentences in Latvian language, and it was constructed specifically for junior primary school children. The sample consisted of 136 first and second graders aged 7 to 9 years (52% girls). Final version of Sentence Repetition Test is composed of 12 items in increasing level of difficulty. Spearman-Brown split-half reliability coefficient of the test is sufficiently high to recognize SRT as reliable. Convergent and concurrent validities of the test were determined in smaller sub-sample of 64 children, using measurements of Digit Span sub-test from Latvian edition of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (Wechsler, 2003) and Phoneme Segmentation Fluency from Latvian edition of Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS Next) (Good & Kaminski et al., 2011; Rascevska et al., 2013a). Sentence Repetition Test has medium strong statistically significant correlations with both tests. The study affirms sufficient reliability and validity of the new test. The Problems in the teaching and learning of Accounting as a vocational subject in Nigeria Secondary Schools

This study is designed to identify the problems facing the teaching and learning of Accounting as a vocational subject in secondary schools in Ondo State and to proffer solution. The study population was about 150 senior accounting teachers in those schools that registered students for accounting at the SSC Examination for at least the past five years. Samples of 50 senior accounting teachers, one teacher per school, were selected from eight out of the 18 local government areas. A questionnaire was used for data collection and was validated by experts. The split half reliability coefficients of the two scales in the questionnaire (I8-item problems and 12-item solutions) were 0.85 and 0.75 respectively. Data were analyzed using mean responses, independent t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Findings revealed that 14 out of the 18-items problems were identified and accepted. All the 12-item solution was also accepted. The hypothesis tested showed that there was a significant difference in the perception/rating of the problems by the accounting teachers in public and private schools (t = 2.51, df = 34, P<0.05); (2) There was no significant difference in the perception/rating of the problems by the accounting teachers in either boys, girls only or mixed school (F (2,51) = 0.0143, P < 0.05); (3) There was no significant difference in the perception/rating of the problems by the accounting teachers in the secondary schools in the various local government areas.

Validation of selected temperament and personality questionnaires for diagnosing drivers’ aptitude for safe driving. A Polish study

This paper presents the results of a study aimed at validating psychological questionnaires evaluating temperamental and personality features. It discusses their usefulness in diagnosing drivers’ aptitude for safe driving and working as professional drivers. Three psychological questionnaires were validated: the Formal Characteristics of Behaviour – Temperament Inventory (FCB-TI), the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire – Revised and Short Scale (EPQ-R (S)) and the Impulsiveness Questionnaire (IVE). Three groups of drivers (n=246) aged 19–75 participated in the study. Group I (professional drivers; n=96) and Group II (nonprofessional drivers; n=75) had never been involved in road crashes, whereas Group III (nonprofessional drivers; n=75) were offenders involved in fatal injury road crashes. Criterion-related validity, Cronbach's alpha and Guttman split-half reliability coefficient were in assessing the psychometric properties of the questionnaires. There were some significant differences between Groups II and III for most traits. However, contrary to expectations, higher Emotional Reactivity, Perseveration and lower Endurance as well as higher Neuroticism, Impulsiveness and Venturesomeness were determined for Group II than for Group III. Additionally, the temperament and personality profile of Group II turned out to be less fitted to the profile of safe drivers than that of Group III, whose profile was actually similar to that of Group I. This seems to result from a high tendency for a positive self-presentation among Group I and Group III (a significantly higher result on the Lie scale in comparison with Group II). The results suggest that if psychological tests are to decide on whether a person may be a professional driver or may drive vehicles, the three questionnaires (FCB-TI, EPQ-R(S) and IVE) do not provide a valid diagnosis of professional drivers’ aptitude because of drivers’ high tendency for positive self-presentation. However, they can be used in job counselling and in screening high-risk drivers.

Purpose: This study is a methodological research study for development of a tool for measurement of care satisfaction of home health nursing in patients who have received care through home health nursing and to test the validity and reliability of the tool. Method: Based on Watson's theory of caring and its constituent factors, the literature related to home health nursing was reviewed, and the standard of home health nursing was compared and analyzed. For verification of the validation and reliability of the final tool which has been developed, data were collected from 166 people who were receiving home health nursing care. Result: According to results of analysis of the factors based on Kaiser and scree test, 10 factors with an eigenvalue greater than 1.0 were extracted, and they explained 72.26% of the total variance. In addition, the factor loadings of 56 questions were greater than .30. For verification of reliability, Cronbach's alpha for all 56 items was .98 and Guttman split half reliability coefficient was .90. Conclusion: This tool based on Watson's theory of caring contributed to development and application of the nursing theory through verification of the theory.

Reliability and validity of the brief version of dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep

Objective To evaluate the reliability and validity of the brief version of dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep(DBAS-16). Methods Participants were out-patients who with insomnia or insomnia comorbided depression disorder or anxiety disorder. All of them were assessed by DBAS-16, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), self-rating depression scale (SDS), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS). 30 of them were evaluated by DBAS-16 two weeks later. Results 230 patients were assessed, 212 pieces of questionnaire with integral answers were collected. The Cronbach α Coefficient of DBAS-16 was 0.786, the Cronbach α coefficients of four subscales were 0.424-0.703. Split-half reliability coefficient of total score was 0.775, split-half reliability coefficient of four subscales were 0.424-0.719. Item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.602 to 0.283(all P<0.05). The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.928, and coefficient of each subscales ranged from 0.709 to 0.907(all P<0.05). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to estimate the construct validity. The fit indices: χ2/df was 1.623, the adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) was 0.882, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) was 0.054, incremental fit index (IFI)was 0.899, non-normed fit index (NNFI) was 0.871, comparative fit index (CFI) was 0.895.Total DBAS-16 score significantly correlated with PSQI(r=-0.311, P<0.01), SDS(r=-0.192, P<0.01), SAS(r=-0.162, P<0.01). Conclusion The reliability and validity of the brief version of DBAS-16 are adequate. Key words: Insomnia; Reliability; Validity; Beliefs; Attitudes

Translation and validation of the Chinese version of the Quality OF Life Radiation Therapy Instrument and the Head & Neck Module (QOL-RTI/H&N).

BackgroundTo translate and validate the Chinese version of the Quality Of Life Radiation Therapy Instrument and the Head & Neck Module (QOL-RTI/H&N), a disease-specific scale to measure quality of life (QOL) for patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) who received radiotherapy.MethodsThe QOL-RTI/H&N was translated and validated according to the standard process: a translation and back-translation procedure, pilot testing and a validation study. HNC patients were enrolled from the Cancer Center of Sun Yat-sen University and assessed using the QOL-RTI/H&N, QLQ-C30 and QLQ-H&N35. Reliability (internal consistency reliability, split-half reliability and test-retest reliability), validity (content validity, construct validity, criterion validity and discriminant validity), and responsiveness analysis were performed to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the QOL-RTI/H&N.ResultsA total of 238 patients (99.2%) completed the questionnaire. Item RTI23 had 16.0% missing data. Other items had low percentages of missing data (0.4% or 0.8%) or no missing data. The average time to finish the scale was 9.8 minutes. Cronbach's alpha of the domains ranged from 0.41 to 0.77. The split-half reliability coefficients ranged from 0.43 to 0.77. All of the intra-class correlation coefficients were equal to or greater than 0.8. All of the item-own domain correlation coefficients were greater than those of the item-other domain. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that Comparative Fit Index, Normed Fit Index and Non-Normed Fit Index were equal to 1.00. Root Mean Square Error of Approximation was 0.01, with 90% CI (0.00, 0.10). The domain scores of the QOL-RTI/H&N were significantly correlated with those of the QLQ-C30 or QLQ-H&N3. All domain scores of patients in different radiotherapy stages were statistically significant (P < 0.05), apart from the speech domain.ConclusionsThe Chinese version of the QOL-RTI/H&N is a valid, reliable and responsive scale to measure QOL in HNC patients and can be used to assess the effects of radiotherapy treatment on these patients.

The psychometric properties of pain self-efficacy questionnaire in multiple sclerosis patients

Background: Given the importance of pain self-efficacy in adapting to chronic pain, the aim of the present study was to determine the psychometric properties of Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Methods: The sample consisted of 237 patients with MS that were selected through convenience sampling in Isfahan MS Society. The participants completed the Persian version of Self Questionnaire (PSEQ) and West-Haven Multidimensional Inventory (WHMPI). The factor structure of Self Scale was evaluated by exploratory factor analysis. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was measured by Cronbach’s alpha. Spearman-BrownSplit-Half reliability and concurrent validity of this scale were also examined. Results: The findings indicated that the internal consistency of the scale was (a=0.896). Spearman-Brown Split-Half reliability coefficient was equivalent to 0.85. Results of factor analysis indicated a factor called Pain Self- Efficacy that accounted for 52.511% of the total variance with minimal factor loading of 0.6. Moreover, the significant correlation between PSEQ and 4 subscales of WHMPI indicated an acceptable concurrent validity for this questionnaire. Conclusion: Findings suggested that Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) has appropriate psychometric properties that might be applicable in research and practice with multiple sclerosis patients.

Determinants of Breastfeeding Patterns among Women in South West Nigeria

The study investigated the determining factors that account for different types of breastfeeding methods among Women in South West Nigeria. The research design used was the descriptive research design of the survey type. The population for the study was made up of women with breastfeeding experience. The sample consisted of 1,385 women selected from three states in South West Nigeria. Multistage random sampling technique was used. The research instrument used was titled Determinants of Breastfeeding Pattern among Women (DBPW). The instrument was valid and reliable; it was construct validated and a split half reliability coefficient of 0.87 was obtained. The study was carried out to exposed mothers to the realistic expectation of their infant’s breastfeeding behavior to support the decision to breastfeed and avoid unnecessary supplementation. Specifically, the study examined the different breastfeeding methods adopted with respect to mothers’ education and employment status. From literature it was observed that despite exclusive breastfeeding being the optimal way of feeding an infant, the percentage of mothers who exclusively breastfed drop from over 75% who initiate to less than 11% at six months, well short of the Healthy People 2010 initiative goal of 50% of infants being exclusively breastfed for six months. The result of the findings revealed that women with high level of education were not well disposed to exclusive breastfeeding; so also, women that are government and private company employees found it very difficult to engage in full breastfeeding. It was concluded that unfriendly working environment can make it difficult to breastfeed on demand. Hence it was recommended among others that the present level of public campaign is stepped up.

Translation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Chinese Version of Functional Digestive Disorders Quality of Life Questionnaire

BackgroundFew useful patient-reported outcomes scales for functional dyspepsia exist in China.AimsThe purpose of this work was to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Functional Digestive Disorders Quality of Life Questionnaire (FDDQL) from the English version to Chinese (in Mandarin).MethodsThe following steps were performed: forward translations, synthesis of the translations, backward translations, pre-testing and field testing of FDDQL. Reliability, validity, responsiveness, confirmatory factor analysis, item response theory and differential item functioning of the scale were analyzed.ResultsA total of 300 functional dyspepsia patients and 100 healthy people were included. The total Cronbach’s alpha was 0.932, and split-half reliability coefficient was 0.823 with all test–retest coefficients greater than 0.9 except Coping With Disease domain. In construct validity analysis, every item correlated higher with its own domain than others. The comparative fit index of FDDQL was 0.902 and root mean square error of approximation was 0.076. Functional dyspepsia patients and healthy people had significant differences in all domains. After treatment, all domains had significant improvements except diet. Item response theory analysis showed the Person separation index of 0.920 and the threshold estimator of items was normally distributed with a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1.27. The residuals of each item were between −2.5 and 2.5, without statistical significance. Differential item functioning analysis found that items had neither uniform nor non-uniform differential item functioning in different genders and age groups.ConclusionsThe Chinese version of FDDQL has good psychometric properties and is suitable for measuring the health status of Chinese patients with functional dyspepsia.

Reliability and validity of dermatology life quality index: assessment of quality of life in human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients with pruritic papular eruption

ObjectiveTo test the reliability and validity of dermatology life quality index (DLQI) in simplified Chinese language by assessing the quality of life (QoL) in HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)/AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) patients with pruritic papular eruption (PPE). MethodsA study of simplified-Chinese-version DLQI was carried out in Henan province, China. The reliability and validity were tested by means of statistical method. Data were processed with SPSS 19.0. ResultsOne hundred and seven subjects participated in the study and 106 (99.07%) finished the questionnaire. Eighteen patients were mildly affected; 62 were moderately affected, 24 were highly affected, and 2 were extremely affected. Reliability analysis showed that the split-half reliability coefficient of questionnaire was 0.556 and the reliability of the full test estimated with Spearman-Brown. correction was 0.7146. The Cronbach alpha was 0.673. According to validity analysis, the correlation between the scores of items and the total scores ranged from 0.208 to 0.529 (P<0.05). Three factors were abstracted from10 questions with the principal component analysis and the contribution rate of the 3 common factors was 59.95%. ConclusionThe simplified-Chinese-version DIQL is an acceptable and valid scale for HIV/AIDS patients with PPE. It can be used to evaluate the QoL of HIV/AIDS patients with PPE in China.

Inter-individual and intra-individual variability of the N2 component: On reliability and signal-to-noise ratio

The nogo N2 component, an anterior negative peak supposed to be generated in the anterior cingulate cortex, has been used as an indicator of conflict monitoring and response conflict in basic and clinical research. Here, we investigate the reliability and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of inter-individual differences of the N2 amplitudes as well as of intra-individual standard deviations of N2 amplitudes. Effects of the number of nogo epochs, type of summary measure (peak vs. average amplitude), and filter cut-offs (1–12Hz vs. 1–30Hz) are investigated. A sample of N=32 participants, performed a go/nogo task. Excellent Cronbach’s alpha coefficients (⩾.90) were obtained for the fronto-central average N2 amplitude at 40 nogo epochs and for the peak N2 amplitude at 60 nogo epochs. The SNR was higher for the average nogo N2 amplitude compared to the peak N2 amplitude. Split-half reliability coefficients of the intra-individual standard deviation of the nogo N2 amplitudes were at least moderate. Based on these results we provide suggestions for a reliable N2 measurement. Moreover, although intra-individual variability has often been conceived as noise the present findings support the idea that intra-individual N2 variability incorporates systematic variance.

Roles of short form-36 health survey scale in the evaluation of quality of life in patients with deep vein thrombosis

To explore the roles of short form-36 health survey scale in the evaluation of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) patients. A total of 179 DVT patients were recruited from Department of Vascular and Thyroid Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital, Xinjiang Medical University from June 2009 to March 2013. They were surveyed with short form-36 health survey scale. Then the feasibility, reliability, validity, responsibility, ceiling effect and floor effect were analyzed. Feasibility analysis: completion time was (10.4 ± 2.9) min and finishing rate 100%. Reliability analysis: all split-half reliability coefficients and Cronbach's α were above 0.8. all internal consistency coefficients were above 0.6. Validity analysis: all Pearson coefficients were above 0.6. Two principal components were extracted by factor analysis and it accounted for 67.011% of total variance. After maximal variance rotation, two common factors were generated. And it was almost the same with the theoretic structural assumption of scale. Responsibility analysis: all score of every degree at post-treatment were higher than at pre-treatment. And it was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Ceiling and floor effects: there was remarkable ceiling effect on role physical (RP) and emotional role (RE) (24.81%, 36.62%). Remarkable floor effect on RP was 31.76%. Short form-36 health survey scale is satisfactory in the evaluation of quality of life among DVT patients. But specific items need further improvement.

Psychometric Validation of a Music-Based Attention Assessment: Revised for Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury

An estimated 1.5 to 2 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year in the United States. Impairments in attention following TBI severely limit everyday functioning in a multifaceted manner. A precise assessment is critical in identifying the types of attention impairments and in recommending appropriate tasks to aid in attention rehabilitation. A Music-based Attention Assessment (MAA) was developed to fill this need and revised to reflect variations of attention ability that exist in the general population. The purpose of the study was to investigate the theoretically-based constructs of the Music-based Attention Assessment-Revised (MAA-R) using a factorial approach and to examine item properties and test reliability in relation to the exploratively-derived factor constructs. The MAA-R is a 54-item multiple-choice, melodic contour identification test, designed to assess three different types of auditory attention including sustained, selective, and divided attention. The psychometric validation of the MAA-R was conducted with healthy adults (n = 165) and patients diagnosed with a moderate to severe TBI (n = 22). Exploratory factor analysis identified five factor constructs, including Sustained-Short, Sustained-Med to Long, Selective-Noise, Selective & Divided, and Divided-Long. After item elimination, the final 45-item MAA-R provided evidence of high internal consistency as computed by split-half reliability coefficients (r = .836) and Cronbach's alpha (alpha = .940). The aggregate findings suggest that the MAA-R is a valid and reliable measure that provides assessment information in regards to the different types of auditory attention deficits frequently observed in patients with TBI. Development and revision issues as well as the use of melodic contours in auditory attention assessment are discussed along with suggestions for future research.

On measurements and their quality: Paper 1: Reliability – History, issues and procedures

This is the first in a short series of papers on measurement theory and practice with particular relevance to intervention research in nursing, midwifery, and healthcare. In this article I discuss reliability, its origins in classic measurement theory, important issues to consider when operationally defining reliability for a particular study, correlational procedures for assessing the reliability of data once collected, including test–retest reliability, split-half reliability, and Cronbach's coefficient α. Some important insights into reliability provided by attenuation theory are also offered.

Development of national neglect norm for urban primary school students of China

To develop the national neglect norms for urban primary school students in China. According to multi-stage stratified cluster sampling principle, 24 cities of 13 provinces (municipalities) in China were selected during December 1 to 31, 2008. A total of 1491 students in grade 1 - 3 and 2236 students in grade 4 - 6 were selected. Questionnaire was designed by authors and the final norms were determined through several statistical analysis methods, such as item analysis method, factor analysis method, reliability analysis method. The reliability analysis and validity analysis were used to test the stability and reliability of the norms. The evaluation criteria of the scale was determined by the percentile method, then the initial development of the norm was completed. The two questionnaires of grade 1 - 3 and grade 4 - 6 students consisted of 55 and 57 items, respectively, whose item loadings were ranged from 0.301 to 0.687 and 0.321 to 0.730, which met the statistical requirements. For grade 1 - 3 students, the scale's total Cronbach α coefficients was 0.914, the total split-half reliability coefficients was 0.896, the Cronbach α coefficients of four level was above 0.737 except medical and social neglect, split-half reliability was ranged from 0.461 to 0.757; for grade 4-6 students, the scale's total Cronbach α coefficients was 0.916, split-half reliability was 0.883, except social neglect, the Cronbach α coefficients of other level was ranged 0.457 to 0.856, split-half reliability was ranged from 0.500 to 0.798. The total neglect cut-off score of the two scales grade 1-3 and 4-6 were 125 and 155, respectively. The structure of two norms was reasonable. The scales have good stability and reliability.

A Scale to Measure Teachers’ Self-Efficacy in Deaf-Blindness Education

Introduction The Teacher Efficacy in Deafblindness Education Scale (TEDE) was developed to expand the construct of self-efficacy to teach children with deaf-blindness. Methods Eighty-seven special educators in the United States were asked to rate their confidence to perform a variety of tasks that are associated with teaching children who are deaf-blind on 36 Likert-type items and to respond to open-ended questions on teaching children who are deaf-blind. Results Analyses based on item response modeling indicated strong internal consistency and split-half reliability coefficients. Construct modeling indicated good respondent and item fit. Discussion The study provides evidence of the validity of a construct of teacher self-efficacy to teach children with deaf-blindness. Suggestions for future iterations of the TEDE were offered in addition to suggestions for future research on self-efficacy in teaching children with deaf-blindness. Implications for practitioners The development of the TEDE and the analysis of its scores can help educators to understand self-efficacy and its importance in supporting students with deaf-blindness. Practitioners who provide technical service to teachers of students with deaf-blindness may find value in the construct of self-efficacy and the TEDE as a tool to measure it.

Excessive daytime sleepiness assessed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and its association with health related quality of life: a population-based study in China

BackgroundExcessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common condition worldwide that has many negative effects on people who were afflicted with it, especially on their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) is a commonly used method for evaluating EDS in English-speaking countries. This paper reported the prevalence of subjective EDS in China as assessed by the Mandarin version of the ESS; tested the scale’s response rate, reliability and validity; and investigated the relationship between ESS scores and HRQOL.MethodsA population-based sample of 3600 residents was selected randomly in five cities in China. The demographic information was collected, subjective EDS was assessed by the Mandarin version of the ESS (ESS scores >10), and HRQOL was evaluated by the Mandarin version of the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36).ResultsThe Mandarin version of ESS had very few missing responses, and the average response rate of its eight items was 97.92%. The split-half reliability coefficient and Cronbach’s α coefficient were 0.81 and 0.80, respectively. One factor was identified by factor analysis with an eigenvalue of 2.78. The ESS scores showed positive skewness in the selected sample, with a median (Q1, Q3) of 6 (3, 0). 644 (22.16%) respondents reported subjective EDS, and all of the scores of the eight dimensions of the SF-36 were negatively correlated with ESS scores.ConclusionsThe Mandarin version of ESS is an acceptable, reliable, and valid tool for measuring EDS. In addition, subjective EDS is common in China, based on the ESS results, and impairs HRQOL.

Development and evaluation of Chinese medicine fire-heat syndrome scale in oral cavity for measuring Chinese herb toothpaste

To formulate the standard measuring tool for the evaluations on fire-heat syndrome in oral cavity by means of Chinese medicine (CM). The measuring scale for fire-heat syndrome in the oral cavity by means of CM was investigated by symptom collection, item pool formulation, item selection, pre-investigation, evaluations on the reliability, validity and reactivity of the measuring scale, according to the principles for measuring scale design and under the guidance of CM theories. The measuring scale was composed of two integrative parts: the self-filling section and the interview section. As far as the reliability was concerned, the total Cronbach α coefficient of the measuring scale was 0.866, the total test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.726 and the split-half reliability coefficient was 0.851. As far as the validity was concerned, the scores for the subjects of fire-heat syndrome in oral cavity and healthy people in their oral cavity in the items of symptoms were statistically different (P<0.01); three common divisors were extracted according to the theoretical dimensions, the accumulated contribution rate was 63.468%. As far as the reactivity was concerned, the difference between the symptom scores before and after the test in which 31 subjects used the Chinese herb toothpaste was statistically significant (P<0.01). This measuring scale has relatively good reliability, validity and reactivity, and it can be used in an objective quantitative evaluation on patients suffering from fire-heat syndrome in oral cavity, and thus lay the foundations for the evaluations on the therapeutic effects of Chinese herb toothpaste on fire-heat syndrome in oral cavity.
