We have studied the ant imicrobial proper t ies of substances extracted from sp ice -a romat ic and medicinal plants. For evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of preparat ions isolated from plants, essential and extractive oils, a lcohol-water extracts , f resh ly prepared s lur ry , and also tissue juices of the original raw mater ia l a re used in general pract ice [1-3]. Substances isolated from plants that possess an t imicrobial charac te r i s t i cs are r e f e r r ed to different groups of compounds by their chemical s t ructure [2, 4]. Exis t ing methods for obtaining these substances do not assure sufficiently complete extract ion of the an t imic robial complex from plant raw material ; in the extraction process the plant raw mater ia l is subjected to thermal and chemical action, as a result of which breakdown of active products may take place. In this connection, the use of liquid carbon dioxide has been proposed for extraction of these complexes from plant raw mater ia l [5].
