The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which teacher‐subjects’ ratings of videotape samples of children's speech would correspond to ratings of the speech that teachers might presume to hear from children of certain ethnic and social status groups. Using a previously developed semantic differential instrument, ratings of stereotype descriptions of children as well as videotape samples of children presumed to be representative of the stereotype descriptions were obtained from fifteen subjects. Results indicated a correspondence between teacher's ratings of stereotyped descriptions and videotape speech samples of children.
