The Hearing Function and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Older Adults.

To examine the association between hearing function, assessed with pure-tone average (PTA) of air conduction thresholds, and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (BP) in older adults. Cross-sectional study. A total of 1404 community-dwelling individuals aged ≥65 years from the Seniors-ENRICA cohort were examined. Hearing loss was defined as PTA > 40-AudCal hearing loss decibels (dB-aHL) in the better ear for standard frequency (0.5, 1, and 2 kHz), speech frequency (0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz), and high frequency (3, 4, and 8 kHz). Circadian BP patterns were calculated as the percentage decline in systolic BP during the night, and participants were classified as dipper, nondipper, and riser. Ambulatory hypertension was defined as BP ≥ 130/80 mm Hg (24 hour), ≥135/85 (daytime), and ≥120/70 (nighttime) or on antihypertensive treatment. Analyses were performed with linear- and logistic-regression models adjusted for the main confounders. In multivariable analyses, the PTA was associated with higher nighttime systolic BP [β coefficient per 20 dB-aHL increment standard frequency (95% confidence interval, CI): 2.41 mm Hg (0.87, 3.95); β (95% CI) per 20 dB-aHL increment speech frequency 2.17 mm Hg (0.70, 3.64)]. Among hypertensive patients, hearing loss at standard and high-frequency PTA was associated with the riser BP pattern [odds ratio: 2.01 (95% CI, 1.03-3.93) and 1.45 (1.00-2.09), respectively]; also, hearing loss at standard PTA was linked to uncontrolled nighttime BP [1.81 (1.01-3.24)]. PTA was associated with higher nighttime BP, and hearing loss with a riser BP pattern and uncontrolled BP in older hypertensives.

A Prospective Comparative Study of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Patients of Head and Neck Cancers Treated with 2-D RT vs 3-D CRT

Background: SNHL is disabling for the patient, since it has a chronic and often Progressive natural history. sensorineural hearing loss is irreversible, whereas conductive hearing loss (as often found after radiotherapy) is mainly reversible. Material and Methods: This prospective randomized study was conducted in Department of Radiation Oncology, S P medical college Bikaner, Rajasthan. The study was done from November 2020 to October 2021. After taking informed consent total of 50 patients of biopsy proven squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck region randomly distributed among Group A who received 2D RT (2Gy/Fr in 30 to 35 fractions for 6 to 7 weeks) and Group B who received 3D CRT (2Gy/fr) in 30 to 35 fractions for 6 to 7 weeks).Result: After completion of treatment SNHL assessment was done in patients treated with conventional and conformal radiotherapy which was for speech frequency 15% and 8 % respectively and for high frequency was 45% and 28% respectively. After 3 month of completion SNHL for speech frequency 27.5% and 12% respectively and for high frequency was 62.5% and 32% respectively. Conclusion: High-frequency hearing loss can have a significant impact on quality of life because it affects speech discrimination, conventional radiotherapy experienced greater hearing loss as compared of conformal.

Autocorrect of a Word in a Sentence using Text Feature Analysis with Natural Language Processing

In text editing software, auto-correct is a crucial tool that helps users correct spelling mistakes and improve the grammatical accuracy of their written content. The unique method for auto-correction proposed in this paper combines test feature analysis with natural language processing (NLP). The algorithm makes use of NLP techniques to examine the original sentence's context and spot any potential mistakes. After that, it runs a number of tests to produce correction suggestions for the word in question. This strategy is predicated on the idea that test characteristics like word frequency, word length, and part of speech can be utilized to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate word patterns. The efficiency of the suggested strategy in correctly correcting words inside a phrase is shown by experimental findings.

Cross-Cultural Pragmatics: Analysing Speech Acts in Different Cultures

Cross-cultural communication entails understanding the nuanced differences in speech acts across diverse cultural contexts. This study aimed to explore these variations, focusing on pragmatic differences and similarities in speech acts among participants from various cultural backgrounds. Employing qualitative methods, communicative scenarios were devised to elicit speech acts, and interactions were recorded for analysis. The participants' cultural backgrounds were diverse, representing a range of ethnicities, languages, and socio-cultural contexts. Data analysis involved categorizing and comparing speech acts across cultures, identifying patterns, and examining cultural influences on speech act usage. Results indicated significant variations in the frequency, form, and interpretation of speech acts among different cultural groups. Cultural norms, values, and communication styles were found to shape participants' understanding and enactment of speech acts, highlighting the intricate relationship between language and culture in communication. These findings have important implications for intercultural communication, language education, and international business. Understanding cultural differences in speech act usage can enhance communication effectiveness in diverse settings, fostering mutual understanding and reducing misunderstandings. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of research on cross-cultural pragmatics, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive approaches to communication in an increasingly globalized world.

The Early Subcortical Response at the Fundamental Frequency of Speech Is Temporally Separated from Later Cortical Contributions.

Most parts of speech are voiced, exhibiting a degree of periodicity with a fundamental frequency and many higher harmonics. Some neural populations respond to this temporal fine structure, in particular at the fundamental frequency. This frequency-following response to speech consists of both subcortical and cortical contributions and can be measured through EEG as well as through magnetoencephalography (MEG), although both differ in the aspects of neural activity that they capture: EEG is sensitive to both radial and tangential sources as well as to deep sources, whereas MEG is more restrained to the measurement of tangential and superficial neural activity. EEG responses to continuous speech have shown an early subcortical contribution, at a latency of around 9 msec, in agreement with MEG measurements in response to short speech tokens, whereas MEG responses to continuous speech have not yet revealed such an early component. Here, we analyze MEG responses to long segments of continuous speech. We find an early subcortical response at latencies of 4-11 msec, followed by later right-lateralized cortical activities at delays of 20-58 msec as well as potential subcortical activities. Our results show that the early subcortical component of the FFR to continuous speech can be measured from MEG in populations of participants and that its latency agrees with that measured with EEG. They furthermore show that the early subcortical component is temporally well separated from later cortical contributions, enabling an independent assessment of both components toward further aspects of speech processing.

Comparison of reverberation times and average absorption coefficients in classrooms, based on in situ measurements versus calculated from material databases as during design

Reverberation time (RT) is an acoustic descriptor used widely by acousticians for characterizing indoor acoustic environments, as specified in standards such as ANSI S12.60 “Acoustical Performance Criteria, Design Requirements, and Guidelines for Schools”. It is often calculated in the design phase for simple spaces by applying equations like Sabine’s or Eyring’s, requiring information on room dimensions and the surface areas and acoustic absorption coefficients across frequency of room materials. In this project, measured RTs from a recent survey of over 200 K-12 classrooms are compared against the RTs predicted across speech frequency octave bands using Sabine’s and Eyring’s equations. Agreement between predicted and measured values varies based on the octave band and material selection. The working group currently revising ANSI S12.60 is considering providing guidance on the desired average absorption coefficient in classrooms, rather than reverberation time, so this study also compares the average absorption coefficients for the classrooms. The coefficients are back-calculated from the measured RTs using Sabine’s and Eyring’s equations, and compared against those calculated from surface dimensions and commonly available material absorption coefficients.

Hearing Loss and Urinary trans,trans-Muconic Acid (t,t-MA) in 6- to 19-Year-Old Participants of NHANES 2017-March 2020.

Hearing loss (HL) is associated with poorer language development and school performance. Ototoxic substances such as metals and solvents, including benzene, are a risk factor associated with HL. This study examines potential associations between the benzene metabolite trans,trans-muconic acid (t,t-MA) and HL in youth of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Logistic regression calculated adjusted odds ratio (aOR) associations between HL and urinary t,t-MA quartiles, natural-log transformed, and doubled urinary t,t-MA. Hearing threshold pure-tone average (PTA) at speech frequencies (SF) 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz and high frequencies (HF) 3, 4, and 6 kHz were analyzed for slight HL (PTA > 15 dB) and mild HL (PTA > 20 dB). Urinary t,t-MA was statistically significantly associated with both slight SF and HF HL. For each doubling of t,t-MA there were increased odds of having slight SFHL (aOR = 1.42; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.92), slight HFHL (aOR = 1.31; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.66), mild SFHL (aOR = 1.60; 95% CI: 1.10, 2.32), and mild HFHL (aOR = 1.45; 95% CI: 1.03, 2.04). To our knowledge, this is the first population-based report of an association between SFHL, HFHL, and the benzene metabolite t,t-MA in youth 6 to 19 years old.

Glaucoma, Pseudoexfoliation and Hearing Loss: A Systematic Literature Review.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation and hearing loss (HL). Methods: A systematic literature search following PRISMA guidelines was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Cochrane databases from 1995 up to 28 August 2023. Results: Thirty studies out of the 520 records screened met the inclusion criteria and were included. Most articles (n = 20) analysed the association between pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFS) and HL, showing XFS patients to have higher prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) at both speech frequencies (0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 kHz), and higher frequencies (4 and 8 kHz) compared to controls in most cases. No significant differences in prevalence or level of HL between XFS and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (XFG) were detected in most studies. Eight articles analysed the relationship between primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and HL. Overall, a positive association between the two conditions was highlighted across all studies except for two cases. Similarly, articles focusing on NTG and HL (n = 4) showed a positive association in most cases. The role of autoimmunity and, in particular, the presence of antiphosphatidylserine antibodies (APSA) in patients with NTG and HL suggested an underlying autoimmune or vascular mechanism contributing to their pathogenesis. Only one study analysed the relationship between angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) and HL, showing higher incidence of ACG in patients with SNHL compared to normal hearing controls. Conclusions: Most studies detected an association between XFS and HL as well as POAG/NTG/ACG and HL, suggesting the presence of a similar pathophysiology of neurodegeneration. However, given the strength of the association of XFS with HL, it remains unclear whether the presence of XFG is further associated with SNHL. Further research specifically targeted to assess the correlation between glaucoma, XFS and HL is warranted to provide a more comprehensive understanding of this association.

Improved tactile speech perception using audio-to-tactile sensory substitution with formant frequency focusing

Haptic hearing aids, which provide speech information through tactile stimulation, could substantially improve outcomes for both cochlear implant users and for those unable to access cochlear implants. Recent advances in wide-band haptic actuator technology have made new audio-to-tactile conversion strategies viable for wearable devices. One such strategy filters the audio into eight frequency bands, which are evenly distributed across the speech frequency range. The amplitude envelopes from the eight bands modulate the amplitudes of eight low-frequency tones, which are delivered through vibration to a single site on the wrist. This tactile vocoder strategy effectively transfers some phonemic information, but vowels and obstruent consonants are poorly portrayed. In 20 participants with normal touch perception, we tested (1) whether focusing the audio filters of the tactile vocoder more densely around the first and second formant frequencies improved tactile vowel discrimination, and (2) whether focusing filters at mid-to-high frequencies improved obstruent consonant discrimination. The obstruent-focused approach was found to be ineffective. However, the formant-focused approach improved vowel discrimination by 8%, without changing overall consonant discrimination. The formant-focused tactile vocoder strategy, which can readily be implemented in real time on a compact device, could substantially improve speech perception for haptic hearing aid users.

Evaluation of an Integrated Fluency and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Intervention for Adolescents and Adults Who Stutter.

Developmental stuttering is a complex and multifaceted neurodevelopmental disorder that may cause pervasive negative consequences for adults who stutter (AWS). Historically, intervention for AWS has primarily addressed speech fluency, with less focus on the covert psychosocial aspects of the disorder. The purpose of this article is to report on a feasibility trial evaluating a novel integrated intervention that combines traditional stuttering management techniques with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for AWS. Twenty-nine AWS participated in the feasibility trial. All participants successfully completed a combined fluency and ACT intervention, titled the fluency and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Stuttering (fACTS) Program. As this was a feasibility study, no control group was included. Intervention was administered by two certified practicing speech-language pathologists, over eight 60- to 90-min sessions. Generalized linear mixed modeling was used to determine change from pre- to post-intervention and follow-up. Significant pre- and post-intervention improvements in self-efficacy, psychosocial functioning, and psychological flexibility were observed, along with significant reductions in observable stuttering behaviors (i.e., stuttered speech frequency). Intervention gains for all variables of interest were maintained 3 and 6 months post-intervention. The fACTS Program was created to be a holistic and flexible intervention to promote self-efficacy beliefs and address stuttering-related psychosocial impacts and speech fluency goals of AWS. Preliminary results indicated positive improvement in all psychosocial outcomes (i.e., self-efficacy, psychosocial impact, and psychological flexibility) and observable speech fluency following completion of the program. Future clinical trials of the fACTS Program with an included control group will further investigate the mechanisms of change for the positive effects observed.

Frequency and characteristics of echoes and self-repetitions in minimally verbal and verbally fluent autistic individuals.

Nongenerative speech is the rote repetition of words or phrases heard from others or oneself. The most common manifestations of nongenerative speech are immediate and delayed echolalia, which are a well-attested clinical feature and a salient aspect of atypical language use in autism. However, there are no current estimates of the frequency of nongenerative speech, and the individual characteristics associated with nongenerative speech use in individuals across the autistic spectrum are poorly understood. In this study, we aim to measure and characterize spontaneous and nongenerative speech use in minimally verbal and verbally fluent autistic children and adolescents. Participants were 50 minimally verbal and 50 verbally fluent autistic individuals aged 6 to 21 years. Spontaneous and nongenerative speech samples were derived from SALT transcripts of ADOS-2 assessments. Participants' intelligible speech utterances were categorized as spontaneous or nongenerative. Spontaneous versus nongenerative utterances were compared between language subgroups on frequency of use and linguistic structure. Associations between nongenerative speech use and a series of individual characteristics (ADOS-2 subscale scores, nonverbal IQ, receptive vocabulary, and chronological age) were investigated over the whole sample and for each language subgroup independently. Almost all participants produced some nongenerative speech. Minimally verbal individuals produced significantly more nongenerative than spontaneous utterances, and more nongenerative utterances compared to verbally fluent individuals. Verbally fluent individuals produced limited rates of nongenerative utterances, in comparison to their much higher rates of spontaneous utterances. Across the sample, nongenerative utterance rates were associated with nonverbal IQ and receptive vocabulary, but not separately for the two language subgroups. In verbally fluent individuals, only age was significantly inversely associated with nongenerative speech use such that older individuals produced fewer nongenerative utterances. In minimally verbal individuals, there were no associations between any of the individual characteristics and nongenerative speech use. In terms of linguistic structure, the lexical diversity of nongenerative and spontaneous utterances of both language subgroups was comparable. Morphosyntactic complexity was higher for spontaneous compared to nongenerative utterances in verbally fluent individuals, while no differences emerged between the two utterance types in minimally verbal individuals. Nongenerative speech presents differently in minimally verbal and verbally fluent autistic individuals. Although present in verbally fluent individuals, nongenerative speech appears to be a major feature of spoken language in minimally verbal children and adolescents. Our results advocate for more research on the expressive language profiles of autistic children and adolescents who remain minimally verbal and for further investigations of nongenerative speech, which is usually excluded from language samples. Given its prevalence in the spoken language of minimally verbal individuals, nongenerative speech could be used as a way to engage in and maintain communication with this subgroup of autistic individuals.

The role of speech style, frequency, and density in recognition memory for spoken words.

What determines whether listeners remember a spoken word? The Effortfulness Hypothesis claims that memory is modulated by a word's intelligibility during real-time processing, while the Distinctiveness Hypothesis claims that it is modulated by a word's distinguishing characteristics. We tested these differing predictions using American English words that varied along three dimensions known to affect both intelligibility and distinctiveness: speech style (clear versus casual), frequency (high versus low), and neighborhood density (high versus low). In a recognition memory experiment, participants (n = 66) listened to a set of study words, and then gave yes/no judgments to indicate whether or not they had heard the word earlier. Results showed that those words which exhibited distinctive characteristics - whether due to clear speech style, low frequency, or low density - were remembered better. The finding supports the Distinctiveness Hypothesis, suggesting that our capacity for remembering words relies on their distinctiveness, rather than on our capacity for recognizing them in real time.

Investigating the Effects of Face Mask on Word Recognition Score Test During the COVID-19 Outbreak: Considerations and Limitations

Introduction: Using personal protective equipment, especially face masks, in the COVID-19 pandemic era may make verbal communication difficult. Furthermore, acoustic changes in mask-wearing conditions may affect speech audiometry results. This study investigates the effect of wearing a face mask on the word recognition score and the role of speech frequency content in this effect.
 Materials and Methods: This study was planned and conducted in two phases. In the first phase, the validity and reliability of two speech material lists, high-pitch and low-pitch, were determined. In the second phase, the word recognition score was measured for “mask-wearing” and “covering mouth without a mask.”
 Results: The statistical analysis showed that the content validity ratio was 0.92, and the content validity index was 0.8. Therefore, both speech lists were valid. For these lists, the mixed analysis of variance analysis showed that the scores for “mask-wearing” were significantly lower than “covering mouth without a mask,” and there was more reduction in scores for the high-pitched list (F=8.7, df=1, P<0.005).
 Conclusion: In terms of the impact of a face mask on speech, explaining how speech audiometry is performed, especially in monitoring treatments, may help limit the probability of misinterpretation of speech test findings. Furthermore, understanding the impact of face masks on word recognition scores in adopting sufficient auditory rehabilitation procedures is necessary.

Study on the Effectiveness of Commitment Speech Act from the Perspective of Force Dynamics Theory

Commitment speech acts play an important role in various fields, but compared to other speech acts, they have not yet received sufficient attention. In political discourse, the implementation frequency of commitment speech acts is quite high, while their usage characteristics, pragmatic strategies, and the influence of social domain factors still need to be explored. The correct implementation of commitment speech acts is helpful to achieve the purpose of communication and promote the success of communication. Therefore, based on Talmy’s force-dynamic theory, this paper collects relevant language materials of commitment speech acts contained in British Prime Minister’s “Brexit” political speech discourse, attempts to consider pragmatic factors on the basis of the force-dynamics model to construct force dynamics models about commitment speech acts for analysis. By analyzing the working mechanism between internal and external parameters in force dynamic schema under different promise strategies, this paper explores the action mode of “illocutionary force” in speech acts of commitment and the implementation path of commissives under the influence of social domain factors and other factors. This paper interprets commitment speech act from the cognitive perspective, expecting to broaden the research paradigm of commitment speech acts and provide ideas for future multi-dimensional study on speech act theory.

Association of serum 25-hydroxyvitamins D2 and D3 with hearing loss in US adults: analysis from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2015-2016.

Hearing loss (HL) is increasingly recognized as a significant global public health issue, and research on its relationship with vitamin D levels has gained wider attention. However, the association between serum biomarkers 25-hydroxyvitamin D2 (25(OH)D2) and D3 (25(OH)D3) with different types of HL remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the potential association of serum 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 with HL in US adults. A sample of 3,684 individuals aged 20-69 years from the 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANES) was analyzed in this study. HL was defined as a pure tone average > 25 dB in either ear at low frequencies (500, 1,000, 2000 Hz), speech frequencies (500, 1,000, 2000, 4,000 Hz), and high frequencies (3,000, 4,000, 6,000, 8,000 Hz). Logistic regression was employed to examine the association between serum 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 and HL. The study population was then stratified by age, gender, race, and education level to analyze potential differences between adults in different subgroups. In the multivariate analysis, it was found that serum 25(OH)D2 was independently associated with low-frequency hearing loss (LFHL) (OR: 1.012 [95% CI, 1.005-1.020]) and speech-frequency hearing loss (SFHL) (OR: 1.011 [95% CI, 1.003-1.018]). Restrictive cubic spline analysis demonstrated a linear dose-response relationship between serum 25(OH)D2 levels and LFHL (p for linearity <0.001), as well as SFHL (p for linearity = 0.001). Conversely, an L-shaped association was observed between serum 25(OH)D3 levels and both LFHL (p for nonlinearity = 0.014) and SFHL (p for nonlinearity = 0.025), with threshold values identified at 35.3 and 36.5 nmol/L, respectively. Higher levels of serum 25(OH)D3 were associated with a lower probability of high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) (OR: 0.994 [95% CI, 0.989-0.999]), with a threshold value identified at 53.9 nmol/L. Furthermore, a significant interaction between diabetes and serum 25(OH)D2 in LFHL was revealed through subgroup analysis (p = 0.041). In the non-diabetic population, serum 25(OH)D2 maintained its association with LFHL. Our findings suggested a positive association between serum 25(OH)D2 concentrations and both LFHL and SFHL in the studied cohort. Additionally, an L-shaped relationship was found between serum 25(OH)D3 and LFHL and SFHL, and higher levels of serum 25(OH)D3 were identified to be associated with a lower risk of HFHL.

Primary Endoscopic Stapedotomy

Background: Otosclerosis is a progressive disease of the otic capsule which presents with conductive hearing loss with an intact tympanic membrane. The description of the disease was first given by Valsalva in 1704. Since then, several techniques are described for otosclerosis. All these procedures have traditionally been performed with microscope. New modifications of surgical techniques have been introduced time to time. The concept of minimally invasive surgical techniques has sprung up lately. Recent advances in optics such as high-definition endoscopes have revolutionized the surgeries in otology. Aim: The study aimed to study the feasibility of primary endoscopic stapedotomy. Objectives: (1) The objectives of the study were to evaluate Air-bone gap (ABG) closure in primary endoscopic stapedotomy and (2) to study intra- and post-operative complications in primary endoscopic stapedotomy. Methodology: Thirty patients with otosclerosis underwent stapedotomy using the standard 0.4 mm 18 cm endoscope and high-definition camera system. Results: Of the 30 cases, 17 were males and 13 were females, with a mean age of 39.84 years. A minimal removal of posterosuperior bony canal wall was required in 21 (70%) cases. The average operative time was 65 min. Among intraoperative complications, chorda tympani injury was seen in 2 (6%) cases, and incus subluxation and stapes footplate subluxation in 1 (3%) case each. Pure-tone audiograms done at an interval of 4 months demonstrated improvement across the three speech frequencies (500–2000 Hz) (50.2 dB vs. 23.7 dB). The average postoperative ABG was within 10 dB in twenty (66%) ears and between 10 and 25 dB in the rest ten (33%) ears. Conclusion: Endoscopic stapedotomy is a good alternative tool to conventional operating microscope. It offers better visualization, less trauma while elevating tympanomeatal flap flap, lesser bone curettage, and provides equivalent results.

A Comparative Study of Chinese and American Political Speech on COVID-19 from the Perspective of Speech Act Theory

As crucial instruments of power, political speeches significantly impact individuals’ political lives. Utilizing Austin’s Speech Act theory as a theoretical framework, this study comparatively analyzes the initial speeches given by the presidents of China and the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to uncover the manner in which both presidents convey their political attitudes through illocutionary acts and investigate the value disparities embedded within their speech acts. The results indicate that the Chinese political address related to COVID-19 includes a greater frequency of directive and representative speech, accentuating the significance of summation and guidance while mirroring China’s status as a socialist nation that prioritizes its citizens. Conversely, the American discourse features more expressive and directive language, underlining the role of speech in modulating public emotions and articulating the speaker’s personal political agenda. This research substantiates and illustrates the practicality of employing Speech Act Theory in political discourse analysis, aiming to enlighten future research within the realm of discourse investigation.

Introduction. The dominant illocutionary goal of institutional advertising discourse is to exercise a suggestive (implicit) influence on a wide range of recipients. An urgent task of modern discourse is to determine a basic list of speech act alternations to ensure the perlocutionary effect necessary for the producer. Identifying their functional and pragmatic potential will make it possible to develop specific recommendations for achieving the initial operational goals of advertising. Materials and Methods. The main techniques of discourse-modus analysis allow analyzing the correlation of the formal explication of the addressee’s voluntary space and, based on consideration of conventionalization markers as the focal mechanism for promoting the author’s intentions into the general space of relevance, to form a list of the most effective descriptive speech acts. Analysis. There is a shortage of adequate terminological tools that allow precise nomination of the type and kind of speech act alternation in systemic analysis of the functional pragmatics of variable speech acts in advertising communication. Based on the contamination of various criteria features, the author’s classification was created, taking into account the illocutionary-semantic correlations of the utterance as a whole, the type and strength of the illocutionary function, the recipient’s focus and the initial prediction of the stimulus-reactive action in objective reality. Results. Meta-realization of the illocutionary goal in advertising communication is carried out within the framework of verbal conventionalization based on the use of commissives, expositives, and permissives; with verbal representation in the phatic-regulatory aspect through satisfactives, regulatives; in the process of discursive dialogization with the help of requests, invitives, injunctives, instructions and suggestions; in discursive reflection in narratives, argumentatives, descriptives and constatives. Direct instructions, instructions and suggestions, which demonstrate low frequency in institutional advertising discourse, have the greatest potential for message performatization. The degree of suggestive influence corresponding to the dominant illocutionary goal demonstrates an inverse relationship with the intensity and frequency of speech act alternations in the text.

Perception of voice cues in school-age children with hearing aids.

The just-noticeable differences (JNDs) of the voice cues of voice pitch (F0) and vocal-tract length (VTL) were measured in school-aged children with bilateral hearing aids and children and adults with normal hearing. The JNDs were larger for hearing-aided than normal-hearing children up to the age of 12 for F0 and into adulthood for all ages for VTL. Age was a significant factor for both groups for F0 JNDs, but only for the hearing-aided group for VTL JNDs. Age of maturation was later for F0 than VTL. Individual JNDs of the two groups largely overlapped for F0, but little for VTL. Hearing thresholds (unaided or aided, 500-400 Hz, overlapping with mid-range speech frequencies) did not correlate with the JNDs. However, extended low-frequency hearing thresholds (unaided, 125-250 Hz, overlapping with voice F0 ranges) correlated with the F0 JNDs. Hence, age and hearing status differentially interact with F0 and VTL perception, and VTL perception seems challenging for hearing-aided children. On the other hand, even children with profound hearing loss could do the task, indicating a hearing aid benefit for voice perception. Given the significant age effect and that for F0 the hearing-aided children seem to be catching up with age-typical development, voice cue perception may continue developing in hearing-aided children.
