Species Scale and Primordial Gravitational Waves

AbstractThe species scale is a field‐dependent UV cut‐off for any effective field theory weakly coupled to gravity. In this letter, it is shown that in the context of inflationary cosmology, a detection of primordial gravitational waves will set an upper bound on the decay rate of the species scale. Specifically, this is derived in terms of the tensor‐to‐scalar ratio of power spectra of primordial perturbations. Given the targets of current and next generation experiments, it is shown that any successful detection would signify that this upper limit is of the order of unity, which is consistent with recent discussions in the literature.

The second data release from the European Pulsar Timing Array

The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) and Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA) collaborations have measured a low-frequency common signal in the combination of their second and first data releases, respectively, with the correlation properties of a gravitational wave background (GWB). Such a signal may have its origin in a number of physical processes including a cosmic population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs); inflation, phase transitions, cosmic strings, and tensor mode generation by the non-linear evolution of scalar perturbations in the early Universe; and oscillations of the Galactic potential in the presence of ultra-light dark matter (ULDM). At the current stage of emerging evidence, it is impossible to discriminate among the different origins. Therefore, for this paper, we consider each process separately, and investigated the implications of the signal under the hypothesis that it is generated by that specific process. We find that the signal is consistent with a cosmic population of inspiralling SMBHBs, and its relatively high amplitude can be used to place constraints on binary merger timescales and the SMBH-host galaxy scaling relations. If this origin is confirmed, this would be the first direct evidence that SMBHBs merge in nature, adding an important observational piece to the puzzle of structure formation and galaxy evolution. As for early Universe processes, the measurement would place tight constraints on the cosmic string tension and on the level of turbulence developed by first-order phase transitions. Other processes would require non-standard scenarios, such as a blue-tilted inflationary spectrum or an excess in the primordial spectrum of scalar perturbations at large wavenumbers. Finally, a ULDM origin of the detected signal is disfavoured, which leads to direct constraints on the abundance of ULDM in our Galaxy.

Solution for cosmological observables in the Starobinsky model of inflation

Euclid: The search for primordial features

Primordial features, in particular oscillatory signals, imprinted in the primordial power spectrum of density perturbations represent a clear window of opportunity for detecting new physics at high-energy scales. Future spectroscopic and photometric measurements from the Euclid space mission will provide unique constraints on the primordial power spectrum, thanks to the redshift coverage and high-accuracy measurement of nonlinear scales, thus allowing us to investigate deviations from the standard power-law primordial power spectrum. We consider two models with primordial undamped oscillations superimposed on the matter power spectrum described by 1 + 𝒜X sin (ωXΞX + 2 πϕX), one linearly spaced in k space with Ξlin ≡ k/k* where k* = 0.05 Mpc−1 and the other logarithmically spaced in k space with Ξlog ≡ ln(k/k*). We note that 𝒜X is the amplitude of the primordial feature, ωX is the dimensionless frequency, and ϕX is the normalised phase, where X = {lin, log}. We provide forecasts from spectroscopic and photometric primary Euclid probes on the standard cosmological parameters Ωm, 0, Ωb, 0, h, ns, and σ8, and the primordial feature parameters 𝒜X, ωX, and ϕX. We focus on the uncertainties of the primordial feature amplitude 𝒜X and on the capability of Euclid to detect primordial features at a given frequency. We also study a nonlinear density reconstruction method in order to retrieve the oscillatory signals in the primordial power spectrum, which are damped on small scales in the late-time Universe due to cosmic structure formation. Finally, we also include the expected measurements from Euclid’s galaxy-clustering bispectrum and from observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We forecast uncertainties in estimated values of the cosmological parameters with a Fisher matrix method applied to spectroscopic galaxy clustering (GCsp), weak lensing (WL), photometric galaxy clustering (GCph), the cross correlation (XC) between GCph and WL, the spectroscopic galaxy clustering bispectrum, the CMB temperature and E-mode polarisation, the temperature-polarisation cross correlation, and CMB weak lensing. We consider two sets of specifications for the Euclid probes (pessimistic and optimistic) and three different CMB experiment configurations, that is, Planck, Simons Observatory (SO), and CMB Stage-4 (CMB-S4). We find the following percentage relative errors in the feature amplitude with Euclid primary probes: for the linear (logarithmic) feature model, with a fiducial value of 𝒜X = 0.01, ωX = 10, and ϕX = 0: 21% (22%) in the pessimistic settings and 18% (18%) in the optimistic settings at a 68.3% confidence level (CL) using GCsp+WL+GCph+XC. While the uncertainties on the feature amplitude are strongly dependent on the frequency value when single Euclid probes are considered, we find robust constraints on 𝒜X from the combination of spectroscopic and photometric measurements over the frequency range of (1, 102.1). Due to the inclusion of numerical reconstruction, the GCsp bispectrum, SO-like CMB reduces the uncertainty on the primordial feature amplitude by 32%–48%, 50%–65%, and 15%–50%, respectively. Combining all the sources of information explored expected from Euclid in combination with the future SO-like CMB experiment, we forecast 𝒜lin ≃ 0.010 ± 0.001 at a 68.3% CL and 𝒜log ≃ 0.010 ± 0.001 for GCsp(PS rec + BS)+WL+GCph+XC+SO-like for both the optimistic and pessimistic settings over the frequency range (1, 102.1).

Exploring Primordial Curvature Perturbation on Small Scales with the Lensing Effect of Fast Radio Bursts

Cosmological observations, e.g., cosmic microwave background, have precisely measured the spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation on larger scales, but smaller scales are still poorly constrained. Since primordial black holes (PBHs) could form in the very early Universe through the gravitational collapse of primordial density perturbations, constraints on the PBH could encode much information on primordial fluctuations. In this work, we first derive a simple formula for the lensing effect to apply PBH constraints with the monochromatic mass distribution to an extended mass distribution. Then, we investigate the latest fast radio burst observations with this relationship to constrain two kinds of primordial curvature perturbation models on small scales. This suggests that, from the null search result of lensed fast radio bursts in currently available observations, the amplitude of primordial curvature perturbation should be less than 8 × 10−2 at the scale region of 105–106 Mpc−1. This corresponds to an interesting mass range relating to binary black holes detected by LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA and future Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer.

Log-periodic gravitational-wave background beyond Einstein gravity

Periodic patterns of logarithmic oscillations can arise in primordial curvature perturbation spectra and in the associated gravitational-wave background via different mechanisms. We show that, in the presence of log oscillations, the spectral shape of the stochastic background has a unique parametrization independent of its physical origin. We also show that this log-periodic modulation can be generated in any scenario beyond Einstein gravity endowed with an approximate discrete scale invariance, a symmetry typical of deterministic fractal spacetimes that could emerge in quantum gravity under certain conditions. We discuss how a log-oscillatory spectral shape arises from concrete inflationary models beyond Einstein gravity and the prospects for detection in Einstein Telescope and other next-generation gravitational-wave observatories. We find that these instruments will be sensitive to log-periodic features if the detection is made with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and that the error scales as .

Primordial black hole mass function with mass gap

ABSTRACT Primordial black holes (PBHs) are mainly characterized by their mass function, in which there may be some huge suppression for certain mass spans. If this is the case, the absence of these PBHs will form mass gaps. In this paper, we investigate the PBH mass function with the mass gap. First, to obtain a data-supported PBH mass function with the mass gap for subsolar masses PBHs, we fine-tune the coefficients of a model-independent power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations. Then we take this unique PBH mass function into consideration and calculate the energy-density spectrum of the stochastic gravitational-wave background from PBH mergers. We find the location of its first peak almost has no relationship with the mass gap and is only determined by the probability distribution of frequencies at which PBH binaries merge. Apart from the first peak, there must be an accompanying smaller trough at a higher frequency resulting from the mass gap. Therefore, the detection of this smaller trough will provide more information about inflation and PBH formation.

Primordial black holes from a curvaton scenario with strongly non-Gaussian perturbations

We investigate the production of primordial black holes (PBHs) in a mixed inflaton-curvaton scenario with a quadratic curvaton potential, assuming the curvaton is in de Sitter equilibrium during inflation with 〈χ〉 = 0. In this setup, the curvature perturbation sourced by the curvaton is strongly non-Gaussian, containing no leading Gaussian term. We show that for m 2/H 2 ≳ 0.3, the curvaton contribution to the spectrum of primordial perturbations on CMB scales can be kept negligible but on small scales the curvaton can source PBHs. In particular, PBHs in the asteroid mass range 10-16 M ⊙ ≲ M ≲ 10-10 M ⊙ with an abundance reaching F PBH = 1 can be produced when the inflationary Hubble scale H ≳ 1012 GeV and the curvaton decay occurs in the window from slightly before the electroweak transition to around the QCD transition.

Understanding large scale CMB anomalies with the generalized nonminimal derivative coupling during inflation

We study the observational implications of a class of inflationary models wherein the inflaton is coupled to the Einstein tensor through a generalized nonminimal derivative coupling (GNMDC). In particular, we explore whether these models can generate suitable features in the primordial spectrum of curvature perturbations as a possible explanation for the large-scale anomalies associated with the angular power spectrum of CMB temperature anisotropies. We derive model-independent constraints on the GNMDC function for such a scenario, considering both the scalar and tensor perturbations. We modify cosmomc to accommodate our GNMDC framework and investigate different classes of inflationary models using a fully consistent numerical approach. We find that the hilltop-quartic model with a specific choice of the GNMDC function provides a considerable improvement over the best-fit reference $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{CDM}$ model with a nearly scale-invariant power spectrum. While the large-scale structure observations should be able to provide independent constraints, future CMB experiments, such as CMB-S4 and CMB-Bharat, are expected to constrain further the parameter space of such beyond canonical single-field inflationary models.

Study of the Inflationary Spectrum in the Presence of Quantum Gravity Corrections

After a brief review of the different approaches to predicting the possible quantum gravity corrections to quantum field theory, we discuss in some detail the formulation based on a Gaussian reference frame fixing. Then, we utilize this scenario in the determination of the inflationary spectrum of primordial perturbations. We consider the quantization of an inhomogeneous, free, massless scalar field in a quasi-classical isotropic Universe by developing a WKB expansion of the dynamics of the next order in the Planckian parameter, with respect to the one at which standard QFT emerges. The quantum gravity corrections to the scale-invariant spectrum are discussed in a specific primordial cosmological setting and then in a general minisuperspace formalism, showing that there is no mode-dependent effect, and thus the scale invariant inflationary spectrum is preserved. This result is discussed in connection to the absence of a matter backreaction on the gravitational background in the considered paradigm.

Bayesian Implications for the Primordial Black Holes from NANOGrav’s Pulsar-Timing Data Using the Scalar-Induced Gravitational Waves

Assuming that the common-spectrum process in the NANOGrav 12.5-year dataset has an origin of scalar-induced gravitational waves, we study the enhancement of primordial curvature perturbations and the mass function of primordial black holes, by performing the Bayesian parameter inference for the first time. We obtain lower limits on the spectral amplitude, i.e., A≳10−2 at 95% confidence level, when assuming the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations to follow a log-normal distribution function with width σ. In the case of σ→0, we find that the primordial black holes with 2×10−4−10−2 solar mass are allowed to compose at least a fraction 10−6 of dark matter. Such a mass range is shifted to more massive regimes for larger values of σ, e.g., to a regime of 4×10−3−0.2 solar mass in the case of σ=1. We expect the planned gravitational-wave experiments to have their best sensitivity to A in the range of 10−4 to 10−7, depending on the experimental setups. With this level of sensitivity, we can search for primordial black holes throughout the entire parameter space, especially in the mass range of 10−16 to 10−11 solar masses, where they could account for all dark matter. In addition, the importance of multi-band detector networks is emphasized to accomplish our theoretical expectation.

Reconstruction of power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales from primordial black hole binaries scenario of LIGO/VIRGO detection

As a candidate bound for the Binary Black Hole (BBH) merger events detected by LIGO/Virgo, Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) provide a useful tool to investigate the primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. Using the GWTC-1 to GWTC-3 catalogs, under the scenario that PBHs originate from large primordial curvature perturbations on small scales during inflationary epoch, we for the first time reconstruct the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. It is found that the value of the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum is enhanced to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$ on scales $\mathcal{O}(1)$ pc. This may imply the validity of PBH as a possible BBH merger candidate.

Towards a reliable reconstruction of the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation on small scales from GWTC-3

Primordial black holes (PBHs) can be both candidates of dark matter and progenitors of binary black holes (BBHs) detected by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration. Since PBHs could form in the very early Universe through the gravitational collapse of primordial density perturbations, the population of BBHs detected by gravitational waves encodes much information on primordial curvature perturbation. In this work, we take a reliable and systematic approach to reconstruct the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation from GWTC-3, under the hierarchical Bayesian inference framework, by accounting for the measurement uncertainties and selection effects. In addition to just considering the single PBH population model, we also report the results considering the multi-population model, i.e., the mixed PBH and astrophysical black hole binaries model. We find that the maximum amplitude of the reconstructed power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation can be ∼2.5×10−2 at O(105)Mpc−1 scales, which is consistent with the PBH formation scenario from inflation at small scales.

Emergent universe: tensor perturbations within the CSL framework

We calculate the primordial power spectrum of tensor perturbations, within the emergent universe scenario, incorporating a version of the Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) model as a mechanism capable of: breaking the initial symmetries of the system, generating the perturbations, and also achieving the quantum-to-classical transition of such perturbations. We analyze how the CSL model modifies the characteristics of the B-mode CMB polarization power spectrum, and we explore their differences with current predictions from the standard concordance cosmological model. We have found that, regardless of the CSL mechanism, a confirmed detection of primordial B-modes that fits to a high degree of precision the shape of the spectrum predicted from the concordance Lambda CDM model, would rule out one of the distinguishing features of the emergent universe. Namely, achieving a best fit to the data consistent with the suppression observed in the low multipoles of the angular power spectrum of the temperature anisotropy of the CMB. On the contrary, a confirmed detection that accurately exhibits a suppression of the low multipoles in the B-modes, would be a new feature that could be considered as a favorable evidence for the emergent scenario. In addition, we have been able to establish an upper bound on the collapse parameter of the specific CSL model used.

Primordial black holes and gravitational waves from dissipation during inflation

We study the generation of a localized peak in the primordial spectrum of curvature perturbations from a transient dissipative phase during inflation, leading to a large population of primordial black holes. The enhancement of the power spectrum occurs due to stochastic thermal noise sourcing curvature fluctuations. We solve the stochastic system of Einstein equations for many realizations of the noise and obtain the distribution for the curvature power spectrum. We then propose a method to find its expectation value using a deterministic system of differential equations. In addition, we find a single stochastic equation whose analytic solution helps to understand the main features of the spectrum. Finally, we derive a complete expression and a numerical estimate for the energy density of the stochastic background of gravitational waves induced at second order in perturbation theory. This includes the gravitational waves induced during inflation, during the subsequent radiation epoch and their mixing. Our scenario provides a novel way of generating primordial black hole dark matter with a peaked mass distribution and a detectable stochastic background of gravitational waves from inflation.

Toward inflation with ns=1 in light of the Hubble tension and implications for primordial gravitational waves

Recently, it has been found that complete resolution of the Hubble tension might point to a scale-invariant Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum of primordial scalar perturbation, i.e., ${n}_{s}=1$ for ${H}_{0}\ensuremath{\sim}73\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{km}/\mathrm{s}/\mathrm{Mpc}$. We show that, for well-known slow-roll models, if inflation ends by a waterfall instability with respect to another field in the field space while inflaton is still at a deep slow-roll region, then ${n}_{s}$ can be lifted to ${n}_{s}=1$. A surprise of our result is that with prerecombination early dark energy, chaotic ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{2}$ inflation, strongly disfavored by $\mathrm{Planck}+\mathrm{BICEP}/\mathrm{Keck}$ in standard $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{CDM}$, can be revived, which is now well within testable region of upcoming cosmic microwave background B-mode experiments.

Planckian discreteness as seeds for cosmic structure

We propose a model of inflation driven by the relaxation of an initially Planckian cosmological constant due to diffusion. The model can generate a (approximately) scale invariant spectrum of (adiabatic) primordial perturbations with the correct amplitudes and red tilt without an inflaton. The inhomogeneities observable in the CMB arise from those associated to the fundamental Planckian granularity that are imprinted into the standard model Higgs scalar fluctuations during the inflationary phase. The process admits a semiclassical interpretation and avoids the trans-Planckian problem of standard inflationary scenarios based on the role of vacuum fluctuations. The deviations from scale invariance observed in the CMB are controlled by the self coupling constant of the Higgs scalar of the standard model of particle physics. The thermal production of primordial black holes can produce the amount of cold dark matter required by observations. For natural initial conditions set at the Planck scale the amplitude and tilt of the power spectrum of perturbations observed at the CMB depend only on known parameters of the standard model such as the self coupling of the Higgs scalar and its mass.

Primordial black holes and gravitational waves in hybrid inflation with chaotic potentials

We study the formation of primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter and the generation of scalar induced secondary gravitational waves (SIGWs) in a non-supersymmetric model of hybrid inflation with chaotic (polynomial-like) potential, including one-loop radiative corrections. A radiatively corrected version of these models is entirely consistent with Planck's data. By adding non-canonical kinetic energy term in the lagrangian, the inflation experiences a period of ultra-slow-roll, and the amplitude of primordial power spectrum is enhanced to O(10−2). The enhanced power spectra of primordial curvature perturbations can have both sharp and broad peaks. A wide mass range of PBHs is realized in our model with the frequencies of scalar induced gravitational waves ranged from nHz to kHz. We present several benchmark points where the PBH mass generated during inflation is around (1−100)M⊙, (10−9−10−7)M⊙ and (10−16−10−11)M⊙. The PBHs can make up most of the dark matter with masses around (10−16−10−11)M⊙ and (1−100)M⊙, and their associated SIGWs can be probed by the upcoming ground and space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatories. The evidence of stochastic process recently reported by NANOGrav may be interpreted as SIGWs associated with the formation of PBHs. These SIGWs may also be tested by future interferometer-type GW observations of SKA, DECIGO, LISA, BBO, TaiJi, TianQin, CE and ET.

Slow-roll inflation at N3LO

The next generation of cosmological observations will be sensitive to small deviations from a pure power law in the primordial power spectrum of the curvature perturbations. In the context of slow-roll inflation, these deviations are expected, they correspond to the so-called running of the spectral index. Their measurement would bring as much information as the discovery of deviations from scale invariance. However, robust parameter inference requires to marginalize over any possible higher-order uncertainties which have been, up to now, not fully determined. We tackle this issue by deriving the inflationary scalar and tensor slow-roll power spectra at next-to-next-to-next to leading order, fully expanded around an observable pivot wave number, for all single-field inflationary models having minimal and nonminimal kinetic terms. Our result therefore encompasses string-inspired inflationary models having a varying speed of sound.

Toward early dark energy and ns=1 with Planck , ACT, and SPT observations

We investigate the constraints on early dark energy (EDE) by combining the most recent CMB observations available, ACT DR4, SPT-3G, and Planck2018 ($\ell_\text{TT,max}=1000$) data. This combined CMB dataset favors non-zero EDE fractions and large Hubble constants. The inclusion of BAO+Pantheon data has little effect on the results, leads to $H_0=71.6( 72.9)_{-1.5}^{+2.0}$ and $73.17(72.74)^{+0.55}_{-0.77}$ km/s/Mpc for axion-like EDE and AdS-EDE, respectively. The axion-like EDE can fit the data significantly better ($\Delta \chi^2 \lesssim -10$) than $\Lambda$CDM, which is mainly driven by the ACT data. It is found again that if the current $H_0$ measured locally is correct, complete resolution of the Hubble tension seems to be pointing towards a scale invariant Harrison-Zeldovich spectrum of primordial scalar perturbation, i.e. $n_s=1$ for $H_0\sim 73$ km/s/Mpc.
