Estimating turbidity concentrations in highly dynamic rivers using Sentinel-2 imagery in Google Earth Engine: Case study of the Godavari River, India.

Turbidity is an essential biogeochemical parameter for water quality management because it shapes the physical landscape and regulates ecological systems. It varies spatially and temporally across large water bodies, but monitoring based on point-source field observations remains a difficult task in developing countries due to the need for logistics and costs. In this study, we present a novel semi-analytical approach for estimating turbidity from remote sensing reflectance in moderate to highly turbid waters in the lower part of the Godavari River (i.e., locations near Rajahmundry). The proposed method includes two sub-algorithms-Normalized Difference Turbidity Index (NDTI) and semi-empirical single-band turbidity ( ) algorithm-to retrieve spectral reflectance information corresponding to the study locations for turbidity modeling. Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Imager data have been used to quantify the turbidity in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The correlation analysis was observed between spectral reflectance values and in situ turbidity data using cubic polynomial regression equations. The results indicated that the , which uses the only red-edge wavelength, identified turbidity as the most accurate across all locations (highest R2 = 0.91, lowest RMSE = 0.003), followed by NDTI (highest R2 = 0.85, lowest RMSE = 0.05), respectively. The remote sensing data application provides a better way to monitor turbidity at large spatio-temporal scales in attaining the water quality standards of the Godavari River.

High-resolution multi-spectral snapshot 3D imaging with a SPAD array camera.

Currently, mainstream light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems usually involve a mechanical scanner component, which enables large-scale, high-resolution and multi-spectral imaging, but is difficult to assemble and has a larger system size. Furthermore, the mechanical wear on the moving parts of the scanner reduces its usage lifetime. Here, we propose a high-resolution scan-less multi-spectral three-dimensional (3D) imaging system, which improves the resolution with a four-times increase in the pixel number and can achieve multi-spectral imaging in a single snapshot. This system utilizes a specially designed multiple field-of-view (multi-FOV) system to separate four-wavelength echoes carrying depth and spectral reflectance information with predetermined temporal intervals, such that one single pixel of the SPAD array can sample four adjacent positions through the four channels' FOVs with subpixel offset. The positions and reflectivity are thus mapped to wavelengths in different time-bins. Our results show that the system can achieve high-resolution multi-spectral 3D imaging in a single exposure without scanning component. This scheme is the first to realize scan-less single-exposure high-resolution and multi-spectral imaging with a SPAD array sensor.

Estimation of Year of Construction of Bridges in Cambodia by Analyzing the Landsat Normalized Difference Water Index

Inspection data can be used to comprehend and plan effective maintenance of bridges. In particular, the year of initial construction is one of the most important criteria for formulating maintenance plans, making budget allocations, and estimating soundness. In an initial survey of bridges in Cambodia, it was concluded that the year of construction of only 54% of 2439 bridges surveyed is known, with the remaining 46% remaining unknown. In this research, Landsat satellite data is used to estimate the year of construction of these bridges. Landsat provides spatial spectral reflectance information covering more than 30 years, and for longer bridges this can be used to estimate the year of construction by visual judgement. However, limited image resolution means this is not possible for shorter bridges. Instead, a method using the Landsat Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) is used to estimate the year of construction. Three pixels are selected from Landsat image data in such a way that one lies on the current location of a bridge and two other reference pixels are placed on similar terrain at a certain distance perpendicular to the bridge axis. NDWI values are plotted over time for the three pixels and the difference in value between the bridge pixel and the two reference pixels is then compared. Before the bridge is constructed, all three pixels should have similar NDWI values, but after construction the value of the target bridge pixel should differ from the other two because the NDWI value of a bridge surface is different from that of the surrounding vegetation. By looking for this change, the year of construction of a bridge can be estimated. All the bridges in the Cambodian database are classified into three categories based on length (which affects their visibility in Landsat images) and year of construction is estimated. The results show that estimated year of construction has the same accuracy in all three categories.

Point Cloud Data Processing Optimization in Spectral and Spatial Dimensions Based on Multispectral Lidar for Urban Single-Wood Extraction

Lidar can effectively obtain three-dimensional information on ground objects. In recent years, lidar has developed rapidly from single-wavelength to multispectral hyperspectral imaging. The multispectral airborne lidar Optech Titan is the first commercial system that can collect point cloud data on 1550, 1064, and 532 nm channels. This study proposes a method of point cloud segmentation in the preprocessed intensity interpolation process to solve the problem of inaccurate intensity at the boundary during point cloud interpolation. The entire experiment consists of three steps. First, a multispectral lidar point cloud is obtained using point cloud segmentation and intensity interpolation; the spatial dimension advantage of the multispectral point cloud is used to improve the accuracy of spectral information interpolation. Second, point clouds are divided into eight categories by constructing geometric information, spectral reflectance information, and spectral characteristics. Accuracy evaluation and contribution analysis are also conducted through point cloud truth value and classification results. Lastly, the spatial dimension information is enhanced by point cloud drop sampling, the method is used to solve the error caused by airborne scanning and single-tree extraction of urban trees. Classification results showed that point cloud segmentation before intensity interpolation can effectively improve the interpolation and classification accuracies. The total classification accuracy of the data is improved by 3.7%. Compared with the extraction result (377) of single wood without subsampling treatment, the result of the urban tree extraction proved the effectiveness of the proposed method with a subsampling algorithm in improving the accuracy. Accordingly, the problem of over-segmentation is solved, and the final single-wood extraction result (329) is markedly consistent with the real situation of the region.

Spectral missing color correction based on an adaptive parameter fitting model.

With the development of remote sensing technology, true-color visualization of hyperspectral LiDAR echo signals has become a hotspot for both academic research and commercial applications. The limitation of the emission power of hyperspectral LiDAR causes the loss of spectral-reflectance information in some channels of the hyperspectral LiDAR echo signal. The color reconstructed based on the hyperspectral LiDAR echo signal is bound to have serious color cast problem. To solve the existing problem, a spectral missing color correction approach based on adaptive parameter fitting model is proposed in this study. Given the known missing spectral-reflectance band intervals, the colors in incomplete spectral integration are corrected to accurately restore target colors. Based on the experimental results, the color difference between color blocks and the hyperspectral image corrected by the proposed color correction model is smaller than that of the ground truth, and the image quality is higher, realizing the accurate reproduction of the target color.

A dataset of UAV remote sensing images of Lanzhou Botanical Garden in 2021

In the study, we used a small drone carrying a visual monitoring camera to obtain the spectral reflectance information of the red, green and blue bands in Lanzhou Botanical Garden. And on the basis of the drone data of Lanzhou Botanical Garden from March First to December 30, 2021, we prepared a dataset of remote sensing images. During the data collection process, the UAV conducted 72 aerial surveys, and took a total of 15,696 images. After aerial triangulation and orthophoto correction, we spliced the images to obtain the digital orthophoto map (DOM), and further calculated the vegetation index results. This dataset includes two kinds of data: DOM and vegetation index. Lanzhou Botanical Garden is located in Anning District, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, with rich vegetation varieties and high spatial heterogeneity in the study area. This dataset has certain potential for researchers to explore in urban vegetation phenology, urban ecological monitoring, and urban thermal environment.

Enhancing Aboveground Biomass Estimation for Three Pinus Forests in Yunnan, SW China, Using Landsat 8

The estimation of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) using Landsat 8 operational land imagery (OLI) images has been extensively studied, but forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is often difficult to estimate accurately, in part due to the multi-level structure of forests, the heterogeneity of stands, and the diversity of tree species. In this study, a habitat dataset describing the distribution environment of forests, Landsat 8 OLI image data of spectral reflectance information, as well as a combination of the two datasets were employed to estimate the AGB of the three common pine forests (Pinus yunnanensis forests, Pinus densata forests, and Pinus kesiya forests) in Yunnan Province using a parametric model, stepwise linear regression model (SLR), and a non-parametric model, such as random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM). Based on the results, the following conclusions can be drawn. (1) As compared with the parametric model (SLR), the non-parametric models (RF and SVM) have a better fitting performance for estimating the AGB of the three pine forests, especially in the AGB segment of 40 to 200 Mg/ha. The non-parametric model is more sensitive to the number of data samples. In the case of the Pinus densata forest with a sample size greater than 100, RF fitting provides better fitting performance than SVM fitting, and the SVM fitting model is better suited to the AGB estimation of the Pinus yunnanensis forest with a sample size of less than 100. (2) Landsat 8 OLI images exhibit superior accuracy in estimating the AGB of the three pine forests using a single dataset. Variables, such as texture and vegetation index variables, which can reflect the comprehensive reflection information of ground objects, play a significant role in estimating AGBs, especially the texture variables. (3) By incorporating the combined dataset with characteristics of tree species distribution and ground object reflectance spectrum, the accuracy and stability of AGB estimation of the three pine forests can be improved. Moreover, the employment of a combined dataset is also effective in reducing the number of estimation errors in cases with AGB less than 100 Mg/ha or exceeding 150 Mg/ha.

Forest Tree Species Classification Based on Sentinel-2 Images and Auxiliary Data

Most research on forest tree species classification based on optical image data uses information such as spectral reflectance, vegetation index, texture, and phenology data. However, owing to the limited spectral resolution of multispectral images and the high cost of hyperspectral data, there is room for improvement in the classification of tree species in large areas based on optical images. The combined application of multispectral images and other auxiliary data can provide a new method for improving tree species classification accuracy. Hence, Sentinel-2 images were used to extract spectral reflectance, spectral index, texture, and phenological information. Data for topography, precipitation, air temperature, ultraviolet aerosol index, NO2 concentration, and other variables were included as auxiliary data. Models for forest tree species classification were constructed through feature combination and feature optimization using the random forest (RF), gradient tree boost (GTB), support vector machine (SVM), and classification and regression tree (CART) algorithms. The classification results of 16 feature combinations with the 4 classification methods were compared, and the contributions of different features to the classification models of forest tree species were evaluated. Finally, the optimal classification model was selected to identify the spatial distribution of forest tree species in the study area. The model based on feature optimization gave the best results among the 16 feature combination models. The overall accuracy and kappa coefficient were increased by 18% and 0.21, respectively, compared with the spectral classification model, and by 17% and 0.20, respectively, compared with the spectral and spectral index classification model. By analyzing the feature optimization model, it was found that terrain, ultraviolet aerosol index, and phenological information ranked as the top three features in terms of importance. Although the importance of spectral reflectance and spectral index features was lower, the number of feature variables accounted for a large proportion of the total. The importance of commonly used texture features was limited, and these features were not present in the feature optimization model. The RF algorithm had the highest classification accuracy, with an overall accuracy of 82.69% and a kappa coefficient of 0.80, among the four classification algorithms. The results of GTB were close to those of RF, and the difference in overall classification accuracy was only 0.14%. However, the results of the SVM and CART algorithms were relatively weaker, with overall classification accuracies of about 70%. It can be concluded that the combined application of Sentinel-2 images and auxiliary data can improve forest tree species classification accuracy. The model based on feature optimization achieved the highest classification accuracy among the 16 feature combination models. The spectral reflectance and spectral index data extracted from optical images are useful for tree species classification, but the effect of texture features was very limited. Auxiliary data, such as topographic features, ultraviolet aerosol index, phenological features, NO2 concentration features, topographic diversity features, precipitation features, temperature features, and multi-scale topographic location index data, can effectively improve forest tree species classification accuracy. The RF algorithm had the highest accuracy, and it can be used for tree species classification space distribution identification. The combined application of Sentinel-2 images and auxiliary data can improve classification accuracy, but the highest accuracy of the model was only 82.69%, which leaves room for improvement. Thus, more effective auxiliary data and the vertical structural parameters extracted from satellite LiDAR can be combined with multispectral images to improve forest tree species classification accuracy in future research.

Estimation of Rice Aboveground Biomass by Combining Canopy Spectral Reflectance and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Red Green Blue Imagery Data.

Estimating the aboveground biomass (AGB) of rice using remotely sensed data is critical for reflecting growth status, predicting grain yield, and indicating carbon stocks in agroecosystems. A combination of multisource remotely sensed data has great potential for providing complementary datasets, improving estimation accuracy, and strengthening precision agricultural insights. Here, we explored the potential to estimate rice AGB by using a combination of spectral vegetation indices and wavelet features (spectral parameters) derived from canopy spectral reflectance and texture features and texture indices (texture parameters) derived from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) RGB imagery. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the combined spectral and texture parameters and improve rice AGB estimation. Correlation analysis was performed to select the potential variables to establish the linear and quadratic regression models. Multivariate analysis (multiple stepwise regression, MSR; partial least square, PLS) and machine learning (random forest, RF) were used to evaluate the estimation performance of spectral parameters, texture parameters, and their combination for rice AGB. The results showed that spectral parameters had better linear and quadratic relationships with AGB than texture parameters. For the multivariate analysis and machine learning algorithm, the MSR, PLS, and RF regression models fitted with spectral parameters (R2 values of 0.793, 0.795, and 0.808 for MSR, PLS, and RF, respectively) were more accurate than those fitted with texture parameters (R2 values of 0.540, 0.555, and 0.485 for MSR, PLS, and RF, respectively). The MSR, PLS, and RF regression models fitted with a combination of spectral and texture parameters (R2 values of 0.809, 0.810, and 0.805, respectively) slightly improved the estimation accuracy of AGB over the use of spectral parameters or texture parameters alone. Additionally, the bior1.3 of wavelet features at 947 nm and scale 2 was used to predict the grain yield and had good accuracy for the quadratic regression model. Therefore, the combined use of canopy spectral reflectance and texture information has great potential for improving the estimation accuracy of rice AGB, which is helpful for rice productivity prediction. Combining multisource remotely sensed data from the ground and UAV technology provides new solutions and ideas for rice biomass acquisition.

DARCLOS: a cloud shadow detection algorithm for TROPOMI

Abstract. Cloud shadows are observed by the TROPOMI satellite instrument as a result of its high spatial resolution compared to its predecessor instruments. These shadows contaminate TROPOMI's air quality measurements, because shadows are generally not taken into account in the models that are used for aerosol and trace gas retrievals. If the shadows are to be removed from the data, or if shadows are to be studied, an automatic detection of the shadow pixels is needed. We present the Detection AlgoRithm for CLOud Shadows (DARCLOS) for TROPOMI, which is the first cloud shadow detection algorithm for a spaceborne spectrometer. DARCLOS raises potential cloud shadow flags (PCSFs), actual cloud shadow flags (ACSFs), and spectral cloud shadow flags (SCSFs). The PCSFs indicate the TROPOMI ground pixels that are potentially affected by cloud shadows based on a geometric consideration with safety margins. The ACSFs are a refinement of the PCSFs using spectral reflectance information of the PCSF pixels and identify the TROPOMI ground pixels that are confidently affected by cloud shadows. Because we find indications of the wavelength dependence of cloud shadow extents in the UV, the SCSF is a wavelength-dependent alternative for the ACSF at the wavelengths of TROPOMI's air quality retrievals. We validate the PCSF and ACSF with true-colour images made by the VIIRS instrument on board Suomi NPP orbiting in close proximity to TROPOMI on board Sentinel-5P. We find that the cloud evolution during the overpass time difference between TROPOMI and VIIRS complicates this validation strategy, implicating that an alternative cloud shadow detection approach using co-located VIIRS observations could be problematic. We conclude that the PCSF can be used to exclude cloud shadow contamination from TROPOMI data, while the ACSF and SCSF can be used to select pixels for the scientific analysis of cloud shadow effects.

Influence of flight hours on spectral behavior of rice (Oryza Sativa L.) and soybean (Glycine Max L.) cultivars in images obtained by remotely piloted aircraft system

The research aimed to evaluate the spectral behavior of remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) images taken of agricultural crops during the day to answer the following hypotheses: (1) there are no significant differences between spectral reflectance information obtained through RPAS images and data from spectroradiometry; (2) the survey time can be defined as a limiting factor in obtaining accurate reflectance data; and (3) it is possible to characterize homogeneous observation windows throughout the day. With regular intervals of 1 h, 12 surveys were made in rice and soybean cultivars, using a Sequoia® camera, embedded in RPAS, and the FieldSpec®3 spectroradiometer, to validate the image spectra. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI), and Transformed Chlorophyll Absorption Reflectance Index (TCARI) derived from aerial images were subjected to Kruskal–Wallis and hierarchical cluster tests to define homogeneous observation times. The Sequoia® system made it possible to obtain reflectance data that met the validation criteria, even operating under varying interaction factors during the day, so the flight schedule did not result in loss of information about the vegetation. The hierarchical cluster analysis allowed the detection of temporal patterns of NDVI, OSAVI, and TCARI throughout the day. For rice and soybeans, three more homogeneous observation windows were characterized. In terms of temporal pattern of NDVI, OSAVI, and TCARI, the Kruskal–Wallis analysis was quite sensitive to the inherent variation of the crops throughout the day, so a hypothesis of homogeneous monitoring windows input throughout the day could not be proven.

Hyperspectral inversion of nitrogen content in maize leaves based on different dimensionality reduction algorithms

Fast, accurate, and non-destructive detection of the nitrogen (N) content in corn leaves is of great significance for the precise dynamic management of nitrogen fertilizer application for corn. Hyperspectral data can provide an important means for detecting the nitrogen content in plants. Existing research has mainly focused on using various vegetation indices or 3–5 band combinations to estimate leaf nitrogen content, ignoring the different in spectral characteristics of hyperspectral data and failing to characterize most of the spectral information. Some scholars have used principal component analysis and wavelet analysis dimensionality reduction algorithms, but used different bands for these models. Therefore, more and different inversion models need to be introduced to improve the use of spectral data and increase the universality of the model. The present study selected three different methods to reduce data dimensionality, including the Successful Projections Algorithm (SPA) and the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and the Elastic Net (EN) algorithms. Then the processed spectral reflectance information and observational data for synchronous leaf nitrogen content were used to construct an inversion model used to predict leaf nitrogen content. Nine inversion models were constructed based on different dimensionality reduction and regression methods. Based on the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE), the accuracy of each model was tested. The main results follow: (1) Dimensionality reduction processing of hyperspectral data can effectively prevent data from overfitting, limit the correlation between adjacent frequency bands, and reduce data redundancy. An EN dimensionality reduction algorithm (EN-Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR)) model R2 = 0.96, RMSE = 0.19) was better than a SPA (SPA-PLSR model R2 = 0.90, RMSE = 0.26) and LASSO (LASSO-PLSR model R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 0.37) dimensionality reduction algorithm. (2) For the same dimensionality reduction method, the accuracy of the regression model based on PLSR was higher than that of other models. Among the nine inversion models in this paper, the EN-PLSR inversion model has the best fitting effect (R2 = 0.96, RMSE = 0.19). (3) Obvious changes in nitrogen content have little effect on the overall hyperspectral reflectance curve. This study provides a reference for high-efficiency and non-destructive testing of corn nitrogen content using hyperspectral technology.

Detection of citrus black spot symptoms using spectral reflectance

Citrus black spot (CBS) disease can usually result in fruit blemish and yield loss on all citrus. Spectral reflectance was utilized to detect CBS symptoms in this study. Hyperspectral images of both healthy and diseased citrus were collected in the spectral region of 396−1010 nm. After raw image calibration, spectral reflectance of diseased (early hard spot, advanced hard spot, cracked spot, early virulent, and virulent) and healthy samples were extracted and used as independent variables for classification. Effective wavelengths were selected using regression coefficients based on partial least squares analysis. K-nearest neighbor models were established to classify the symptoms in each group (early hard spot vs. advanced hard spot, early virulent vs. virulent, hard spot vs. cracked spot, hard spot vs. virulent, cracked spot vs. virulent, diseased vs. healthy, and early stage vs. advanced stage). In diseased vs. healthy group, the models yielded the correct classification accuracies of 99.4 % (using full wavelengths) and 100.0 % (using selected wavelengths) for diseased samples. The correct classification accuracies were 92.5 % (using full wavelengths) and 93.8 % (using selected wavelengths) for early stage samples (early disease). Besides, the selected wavelengths were 549, 668, 706, and 790 nm for diseased vs. healthy group, and 675, 711, and 835 nm for early stage vs. advanced stage group. The overall results demonstrated that spectral reflectance information has the potential to classify different symptoms of CBS.

Mapping hydrothermal alteration mineral deposits from Landsat 8 satellite data in Pala, Mayo Kebbi Region, Southwestern Chad

The different image attribute extracting techniques, spectral enhancement ability, pixel classification methods have been applied on the Landsat 8 OLI satellite image data to map geological features and spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration zones, which have been recorded to be associated with gold mineralization in the Pala, Mayo Kebbi region of southwestern Chad. Radiometric calibrated, noise filtered and image enhanced Landsat 8 OLI data were subjected to colour composite, band rationing and crosta analyses in order to enhance spectral reflectance and compositional information, create colourful multispectral images which enable the mapping of desired spectral bands into principal component images for the purpose of accentuating salient information needful to delineate hydrothermal alteration zones within the study area.Composite ratios 4/2-6/7-6/5 indicate relative spatial distribution of iron-oxide in the southeast while clays and hydroxyl minerals occur in the west and northwestern part of the study area. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues for hydroxyl minerals from the crosta analysis indicate highest loadings of opposite signs (-0.721498 & 0.649465; bands 6 & 7) in PC3, representing ‘’H’’ image. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues for iron-oxides on the other hand present highest loading of opposite signs (0.895721 & -0.443283; bands 2 & 4) in PC4, representing the “F” image. The white coloured pixels within the bright reflections generated from Crosta composite image of H, H+F & F in RGB delineate hydrothermal alteration zones. The plot of delineated zones of hydrothermal alteration on the Landsat 8 true colour indicate spatial distribution of the alteration areas within the host greenstone belt belonging to the Precambrian Goueygoudoum series and they plot mainly along major structural features, suggesting structural control. Field control revealed that some areas delineated by band rationing as hydrothermal alteration zones appear to be the result of intense weathering. Accordingly, we recommend that remote sensing delineation of hydrothermal alteration zones should be checked by a relevant ground-observation based control procedure.

Spectral Reflectance Estimation Using Projector with Unknown Spectral Power Distribution

A lighting-based multispectral imaging system using an RGB camera and a projector is one of the most practical and low-cost systems to acquire multispectral observations for estimating the scene's spectral reflectance information. However, existing projector-based systems assume that the spectral power distribution (SPD) of each projector primary is known, which requires additional equipment such as a spectrometer to measure the SPD. In this paper, we present a method for jointly estimating the spectral reflectance and the SPD of each projector primary. In addition to adopting a common spectral reflectance basis model, we model the projector's SPD by a low-dimensional model using basis functions obtained by a newly collected projector's SPD database. Then, the spectral reflectances and the projector's SPDs are alternatively estimated based on the basis models. We experimentally show the performance of our joint estimation using a different number of projected illuminations and investigate the potential of the spectral reflectance estimation using a projector with unknown SPD.

Dynamic Influence Elimination and Chlorophyll Content Diagnosis of Maize Using UAV Spectral Imagery

In order to improve the diagnosis accuracy of chlorophyll content in maize canopy, the remote sensing image of maize canopy with multiple growth stages was acquired by using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a spectral camera. The dynamic influencing factors of the canopy multispectral images of maize were removed by using different image segmentation methods. The chlorophyll content of maize in the field was diagnosed. The crop canopy spectral reflectance, coverage, and texture information are combined to discuss the different segmentation methods. A full-grown maize canopy chlorophyll content diagnostic model was created on the basis of the different segmentation methods. Results showed that different segmentation methods have variations in the extraction of maize canopy parameters. The wavelet segmentation method demonstrated better advantages than threshold and ExG index segmentation methods. This method segments the soil background, reduces the texture complexity of the image, and achieves satisfactory results. The maize canopy multispectral band reflectance and vegetation index were extracted on the basis of the different segmentation methods. A partial least square regression algorithm was used to construct a full-grown maize canopy chlorophyll content diagnostic model. The result showed that the model accuracy was low when the image background was not removed (Rc2 (the determination coefficient of calibration set) = 0.5431, RMSEF (the root mean squared error of forecast) = 4.2184, MAE (the mean absolute error) = 3.24; Rv2 (the determination coefficient of validation set) = 0.5894, RMSEP (the root mean squared error of prediction) = 4.6947, and MAE = 3.36). The diagnostic accuracy of the chlorophyll content could be improved by extracting the maize canopy through the segmentation method, which was based on the wavelet segmentation method. The maize canopy chlorophyll content diagnostic model had the highest accuracy (Rc2 = 0.6638, RMSEF = 3.6211, MAE = 2.89; Rv2 = 0.6923, RMSEP = 3.9067, and MAE = 3.19). The research can provide a feasible method for crop growth and nutrition monitoring on the basis of the UAV platform and has a guiding significance for crop cultivation management.

Spectral-divergence based pigment discrimination and mapping: A case study on The Scream (1893) by Edvard Munch

ABSTRACT An important application of imaging spectroscopy or hyperspectral imaging is the classification or discrimination of pigments based on the obtained spectral reflectance information. As opposed to being a point-analysis tool, this non-invasive method captures the entire surface of interest. This means that its potential is not only in the discrimination of pigments but also in their mapping. However, the challenge lies in the fact that in a real painting, there is no clear-cut edge between regions with certain pure pigments or of the exact same mixture. Pigments and other paint materials mix seamlessly and continuously in the physical domain. In this article, we introduce a divergence-based approach to pigment discrimination and mapping. The methodology is then applied to Munch’s masterpiece The Scream (1893), whose pigments and materials have been identified for several points in the painting in a previous study. Through the introduced methodology, we have been able to extend the point analyzes of pigments and materials to the entire surface of the painting, recto and verso.

RDCRMG: A Raster Dataset Clean & Reconstitution Multi-Grid Architecture for Remote Sensing Monitoring of Vegetation Dryness

In recent years, remote sensing (RS) research on crop growth status monitoring has gradually turned from static spectrum information retrieval in large-scale to meso-scale or micro-scale, timely multi-source data cooperative analysis; this change has presented higher requirements for RS data acquisition and analysis efficiency. How to implement rapid and stable massive RS data extraction and analysis becomes a serious problem. This paper reports on a Raster Dataset Clean & Reconstitution Multi-Grid (RDCRMG) architecture for remote sensing monitoring of vegetation dryness in which different types of raster datasets have been partitioned, organized and systematically applied. First, raster images have been subdivided into several independent blocks and distributed for storage in different data nodes by using the multi-grid as a consistent partition unit. Second, the “no metadata model” ideology has been referenced so that targets raster data can be speedily extracted by directly calculating the data storage path without retrieving metadata records; third, grids that cover the query range can be easily assessed. This assessment allows the query task to be easily split into several sub-tasks and executed in parallel by grouping these grids. Our RDCRMG-based change detection of the spectral reflectance information test and the data extraction efficiency comparative test shows that the RDCRMG is reliable for vegetation dryness monitoring with a slight reflectance information distortion and consistent percentage histograms. Furthermore, the RDCGMG-based data extraction in parallel circumstances has the advantages of high efficiency and excellent stability compared to that of the RDCGMG-based data extraction in serial circumstances and traditional data extraction. At last, an RDCRMG-based vegetation dryness monitoring platform (VDMP) has been constructed to apply RS data inversion in vegetation dryness monitoring. Through actual applications, the RDCRMG architecture is proven to be appropriate for timely vegetation dryness RS automatic monitoring with better performance, more reliability and higher extensibility. Our future works will focus on integrating more kinds of continuously updated RS data into the RDCRMG-based VDMP and integrating more multi-source datasets based collaborative analysis models for agricultural monitoring.

A Dempster Shafer-based fuzzy multisensor fusion system using airborne lidar and hyperspectral imagery

ABSTRACTNowadays, accurate spectral reflectance information is provided by hyperspectral (HS) data while light detection and ranging (lidar) data provides precise information about the height and geometrical properties of the surfaces. In the most research papers, data fusion of disparate sensors significantly improves object classification performance compared to that of just an individual sensor. Previous researches on fusion of these two sensors had problems such as crisp classifiers or simple fuzzy decision-making systems. This article tries to overcome these weaknesses by accurate support vector machine (SVM) and Fuzzy SVM as classifiers in crisp and fuzzy decision fusion system and fusion of two sensors by two different methods based on precise theories of Bayesian and Shafer. Also, the proposed method tries to compare the results of fusion of both data using decision fusion system with stacked features strategy. This study focuses on HS and lidar fusion through three main phases. The first phase is based on the using of Noise Weighted Harsanyi-Farrand-Chang method and principal component analysis to overcome the high dimensionality problem of HS data. The second phase is based on the feature extraction and selection strategy on lidar data. Finally, fuzzy SVM and Dempster Shafer methods are applied as fuzzy classification and fuzzy decision fusion strategies on the feature spaces. A co-registered HS and lidar data set from Houston of U.S.A. by 15 classes was available to examine the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results of this study highlight that the combination of HS and lidar data enable reliable mapping of land cover.

Towards prediction of soil erodibility, SOM and CaCO3 using laboratory Vis-NIR spectra: A case study in a semi-arid region of Iran

Soil Visible–Near-Infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy has become an applicable and interesting technique to evaluate a number of soil properties because it is a fast, cost-effective, and non-invasive measurement technique. The main objective of the study to predict soil erodibility (K-factor), soil organic matter (SOM), and calcium carbonate equivalent (CaCO3) in calcareous soils of semi-arid regions located in south of Iran using spectral reflectance information in the Vis-NIR range. The K-factor was measured in 40 erosion plots under natural rainfall and the spectral reflectance of soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory. Various soil properties including the CaCO3, soil particle size distribution, SOM, permeability, and wet-aggregate stability were measured. Partial least-squares regression (PLSR) and stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR) were used to obtain effective bands and develop Spectrotransfer Function (STF) using spectral reflectance information and Pedotransfer Function (PTF) to predict the K-factor, respectively. The derived STF was compared with developed PTF using measurable soil properties by Ostovari et al. (2016) and the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) predictions of the K-factor. The results revealed that the USLE over-predicts (0.030thMJ−1mm−1) the K-factor when compared to the ground-truth measurements (0.015thMJ−1) in the semi-arid region of Iran. Results showed that developed PTF had the highest performance (R2=0.74, RMSE=0.004 and ME=−0.003thMJ−1mm−1) to predict K-factor. The results also showed that the PLSR method predicted SOM with R2 values of 0.67 and 0.65 and CaCO3 with R2 values of 0.51 and 0.71 for calibration and validation datasets, respectively. We found good predictions for K-factor with R2=0.56 and ratio of predicted deviation (RPD)=1.5 using the PLSR model. The derived STF (R2=0.64, RMSE=0.002 and ME=0.001thMJ−1mm−1) performed better than the USLE (R2=0.06, RMSE=0.0171 and ME=0.0151thMJ−1mm−1) for estimating the K-factor.
