Modeling Blazar Broadband Emission with a Convolutional Neural Network. I. Synchrotron Self-Compton Model

Modeling the multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of blazars provides key insights into the underlying physical processes responsible for the emission. While SED modeling with self-consistent models is computationally demanding, it is essential for a comprehensive understanding of these astrophysical objects. We introduce a novel, efficient method for modeling the SEDs of blazars by the mean of a convolutional neural network (CNN). In this paper, we trained the CNN on a leptonic model that incorporates synchrotron and inverse Compton emissions, as well as self-consistent electron cooling and pair creation–annihilation processes. The CNN is capable of reproducing the radiative signatures of blazars with high accuracy. This approach significantly reduces the computational time, thereby enabling real-time fitting to multiwavelength data sets. As a demonstration, we used the trained CNN with MultiNest to fit the broadband SEDs of Mrk 421 and 1ES 1959+650, successfully obtaining their parameter posterior distributions. This novel framework for fitting the SEDs of blazars will be further extended to incorporate more sophisticated models based on external Compton and hadronic scenarios, allowing for multimessenger constraints in the analysis. The models will be made publicly available via a web interface at the Markarian Multiwavelength Data Center to facilitate self-consistent modeling of multimessenger data from blazar observations.

The Remarkable Predictive Power of Infrared Data of Blazars

Blazars are the brightest and most abundant persistent sources in the extragalactic γ-ray sky. Due to their significance, they are often observed across various energy bands, where the data of which can be used to explore potential correlations between emission at different energies, yielding valuable insights into the emission processes of their powerful jets. In this study we utilized IR data at 3.4 and 4.6 μm from the Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Reactivation Mission, spanning 8 yr of observations, X-ray data from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory collected throughout the satellite’s lifetime, and 12 years of γ-ray measurements from the Fermi Large Area Telescope’s all-sky survey. Our analysis reveals that the IR spectral slope reliably predicts the peak frequency and maximum intensity of the synchrotron component of blazar spectral energy distributions, provided it is uncontaminated by radiation unrelated to the jet. A notable correlation between the IR and γ-ray fluxes was observed, with the BL Lacertae subclass of blazars displaying a strong correlation coefficient of r = 0.80. IR band variability is more pronounced in flat spectrum radio quasars than in BL Lacertae objects, with mean fractional variability values of 0.65 and 0.35, respectively. We also observed that the synchrotron peak intensity of intermediate-high-energy-peaked objects can forecast their detectability at very high γ-ray energies. We used this predicting power to identify objects in current catalogs that could meet the detection threshold of the Cerenkov Telescope Array extragalactic survey, which should encompass approximately 180 blazars.

Bjet_MCMC: A New Tool to Automatically Fit the Broadband Spectral Energy Distributions of Blazars

Multiwavelength observations are now the norm for studying blazars’ various states of activity, classifying them, and determining the possible underlying physical processes driving their emission. Broadband emission models became unavoidable tools for testing emission scenarios and setting the values of physical quantities such as the magnetic field strength, Doppler factor, or shape of the particle distribution of the emission zone(s). We announce here the first public release of a new tool, Bjet_MCMC, that can automatically fit the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of blazars. The complete code is available on GitHub and allows for testing leptonic synchrotron self-Compton models with or without external inverse-Compton processes from the thermal environment of supermassive black holes (accretion disk and broad-line region). The code is designed to be user-friendly and computationally efficient. It contains a core written in C++ and a fully parallelized SED fitting method. The original multi-SSC zone model of Bjet is also available on GitHub but is not included in the Markov Chain Monte Carlo fitting process at the moment. We present the features, performance, and results of Bjet_MCMC, as well as user advice.

IXPE and Multiwavelength Observations of Blazar PG 1553+113 Reveal an Orphan Optical Polarization Swing

The lower-energy peak of the spectral energy distribution of blazars has commonly been ascribed to synchrotron radiation from relativistic particles in the jets. Despite the consensus regarding jet emission processes, the particle acceleration mechanism is still debated. Here, we present the first X-ray polarization observations of PG 1553+113, a high-synchrotron-peak blazar observed by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We detect an X-ray polarization degree of (10 ± 2)% along an electric-vector position angle of ψ X = 86° ± 8°. At the same time, the radio and optical polarization degrees are lower by a factor of ∼3. During our IXPE pointing, we observed the first orphan optical polarization swing of the IXPE era, as the optical angle of PG 1553+113 underwent a smooth monotonic rotation by about 125°, with a rate of ∼17° day–1. We do not find evidence of a similar rotation in either radio or X-rays, which suggests that the X-ray and optically emitting regions are separate or, at most, partially cospatial. Our spectropolarimetric results provide further evidence that the steady-state X-ray emission in blazars originates in a shock-accelerated and energy-stratified electron population.

Gamma‐ray production in supermassive black hole binary OJ 287

AbstractOJ 287 is one of the most studied BL Lac objects with very long optical measurements whose spectrum has been well measured through radio to X‐ray band. The most outstanding characteristic of OJ 287 is its 12‐year period, which is discovered in the optical range and has also been confirmed in the X‐ray band. OJ 287 is supposed to be a binary black hole system in which a secondary black hole passes the accretion disk of the primary black hole and produces two impact flashes per period. It has also been proposed to be a GeV–TeV source. Observations of OJ 287 in the GeV–TeV energy range reveal the variable γ‐ray connected with the flare activity of this object. The spectral energy distributions of blazars consist of two broad peaks. The first, lower frequency peak is due to the synchrotron emissions of relativistic electrons in the jet. Leptonic and hadronic emission mechanisms are considered to describe the second, higher frequency spectrum part. The inverse Compton emissions of the same electrons (synchrotron self‐Compton model) or combined with an external Compton mechanism are considered in the leptonic scenario. The last one supposes the existence of the external to jet photon cloud. The high‐energy spectrum part is also supposed to be generated due to the acceleration of the cosmic ray hadrons in shock produced by outflow, which expands and then collides with the wind of the primary black hole. The detection of GeV–TeV energy fluxes can help find the parameters of the configuration of the two‐black hole system.

X-ray spectra, light curves and SEDs of blazars frequently observed by Swift

ABSTRACT Blazars research is one of the hot topics of contemporary extragalactic astrophysics. That is because these sources are the most abundant type of extragalactic γ-ray sources and are suspected to play a central role in multimessenger astrophysics. We have used Swift$\_$xrtproc, a tool to carry out an accurate spectral and photometric analysis of the Swift-XRT data of all blazars observed by Swift at least 50 times between December 2004 and the end of 2020. We present a database of X-ray spectra, best-fit parameter values, count rates and flux estimations in several energy bands of over 31 000 X-ray observations and single snapshots of 65 blazars. The results of the X-ray analysis have been combined with other multifrequency archival data to assemble the broad-band Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) and the long-term light curves of all sources in the sample. Our study shows that large X-ray luminosity variability on different time-scales is present in all objects. Spectral changes are also frequently observed with a ‘harder-when-brighter’ or ‘softer-when-brighter’ behaviour depending on the SED type of the blazars. The peak energy of the synchrotron component (νpeak) in the SED of HBL blazars, estimated from the log-parabolic shape of their X-ray spectra, also exhibits very large changes in the same source, spanning a range of over two orders of magnitude in Mrk421 and Mrk501, the objects with the best data sets in our sample.

An explanation about the flat radio spectrum for Mrk 421

It is well known that a flat radio spectrum is a common property in the spectral energy distribution of blazars. Although one-zone leptonic models are generally successful in explaining the multi-wave band emission, they are problematic in reproducing the radio spectrum. In the study of Mrk 421, one-zone models suggest that in order to avoid overproducing the radio flux, the minimum electron Lorentz factor should be larger than a few hundred at least, even considering the synchrotron self-absorption effect. This result suggests that the model predicted spectral index in the radio band of Mrk 421 should be -1/3. On the basis of this result, by assuming there is a neglected region that will also contribute the radio emission and its electron energy index naturally originates from the simplest first-order Fermi acceleration mechanism, we can get a superimposed flat radio spectrum. In this paper, a two-zone model is proposed to reproduce the quiescent state spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421. In addition to taking into account the emission from a conventional radiation zone, we further consider emission from the acceleration zone in which particles are accelerated at a shock front. With the present model, our fitting result suggests that the low frequency flat radio spectrum of Mrk 421 might be explained as a superposition of the synchrotron emission from acceleration zone and radiation zone.

On the Origin and Evolution of Curvature of the Spectral Energy Distribution of Fermi Bright Blazars

Abstract The origin and evolution of spectral curvature in blazar spectral energy distribution (SED) is still unclear. Since the observed SED curvature is related to an intrinsic curvature in emitting electron energy distribution (EED), we study this question by employing a log-parabolic EED with a curvature parameter and peak energy to model the quasi-simultaneous broadband SEDs of selected blazars in the Fermi-LAT Bright AGN Sample using synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) processes. We find that the log-parabolic IC model can successfully explain the emission in all blazars in our sample. On average, FSRQs have higher magnetic field, Doppler factor, and curvature than BL Lac objects. The BL Lac objects show an anticorrelation between the curvature parameter of the EED and its peak energy, which is a signature of stochastic acceleration. FSRQs do not manifest such correlation and rather show a mild positive relationship between these parameters. This suggests that the evolution of spectral curvature in the BL Lac objects is dominated by a strong stochastic acceleration component, whereas the curvature in FSRQs evolves in a cooling dominated regime due to an additional external Compton component. The strong cooling in FSRQs not only restricts the electron peak energy but also adds extra curvature to the high energy tail of emitting EED. Since the curvature decreases from FSRQs toward high peak BL Lac objects (HBLs), opposite to peak energy, the curvature parameter can be considered a third parameter of the blazar sequence in addition to peak frequency and luminosity.

Observational signatures of gamma-rays from bright blazars and wakefield theory

ABSTRACTGamma-ray observations have revealed strong variability in blazar luminosities in the gamma-ray band over time-scales as short as minutes. We show, for the first time, that the correlation of the spectrum with intensity is consistent with the behaviour of the luminosity variation of blazar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) along a blazar sequence for low synchrotron peak blazars. We show that the observational signatures of variability with flux are consistent with wakefield acceleration of electrons initiated by instabilities in the blazar accretion disc. This mechanism reproduces the observed time variations as short as 100 s. The wakefield mechanism also predicts a reduction of the electron spectral index with increased gamma-ray luminosity, which could be detected in higher energy observations well above the inverse Compton peak.

Magnetic energy dissipation and origin of non-thermal spectra in radiatively efficient relativistic sources

ABSTRACT The dissipation of turbulent magnetic fields is an appealing scenario to explain the origin of non-thermal particles in high-energy astrophysical sources. However, it has been suggested that the particle distribution may effectively thermalize when the radiative (synchrotron and/or Inverse Compton) losses are severe. Inspired by recent particle-in-cell simulations of relativistic turbulence, which show that electrons are impulsively heated in intermittent current sheets by a strong electric field aligned with the local magnetic field, we instead argue that in plasmas where the particle number density is dominated by the pairs (electron–positron and electron–positron–ion plasmas): (i) as an effect of fast cooling and of different injection times, the electron energy distribution is dne/dγ ∝ γ−2 for γ ≲ γheat (the Lorentz factor γheat being close to the equipartition value), while the distribution steepens at higher energies; (ii) since the time-scales for the turbulent fields to decay and for the photons to escape are of the same order, the magnetic and the radiation energy densities in the dissipation region are comparable; (iii) if the mass energy of the plasma is dominated by the ion component, the pairs with a Lorentz factor smaller than a critical one (of the order of the proton-to-electron mass ratio) become isotropic, while the pitch angle remains small otherwise. The outlined scenario is consistent with the typical conditions required to reproduce the spectral energy distribution of blazars, and allows one to estimate the magnetization of the emission site. Finally, we show that turbulence within the Crab Nebula may power the observed gamma-ray flares if the pulsar wind is nearly charge separated at high latitudes.

X-Ray Spectral Variations of Synchrotron Peak in BL Lacs

Abstract The spectral energy distribution of blazars around the synchrotron peak can be well described by the log-parabolic model that has three parameters: peak energy (E p), peak luminosity (L p), and the curvature parameter (b). It has been suggested that E p shows relations with L p and b in several sources, which can be used to constrain the physical properties of the emitting region and/or acceleration processes of the emitting particles. We systematically study the E p–L p and E p–(1/b) relations for 14 BL Lac objects using the 3–25 keV RXTE/PCA and 0.3–10 keV Swift/XRT data. Most objects (9/14) exhibit positive E p–L p correlations, three sources show no correlation, and two sources display negative correlations. In addition, most targets (7/14) present no correlation between E p and 1/b, five sources pose negative correlations, and two sources demonstrate positive correlations. 1ES 1959+650 displays two different E p–L p relations in 2002 and 2016. We also analyze E p–L p and E p–(1/b) relations during flares lasting for several days. The E p–L p relation does not exhibit significant differences between flares, while the E p–(1/b) relation varies from flare to flare. For the total sample, when L p < 1045 erg s−1, there seems to be a positive E p–L p correlation. L p and the slope of E p–L p relation present an anticorrelation, which indicates that the causes of spectral variations might be different between luminous and faint sources. E p shows a positive correlation with the black hole mass. We discuss the implications of these results.

Spectral energy distribution of blazars

AbstractThis study focuses on spectral energy distributions and light-curves of blazars and radio galaxies, and the testing of the existing models with a view to appropriately predict a new model that will nearly accurately present the nature of the energy outflows of these super-massive bodies. Understanding blazar emission is very important as it relates more directly to the physics of the AGN’s central black hole. X-ray, radio and gamma-ray wavelength range data on blazars and radio galaxies from archived data has been collected and a detailed investigation of the spectral energy distribution patterns of the blazars and radio galaxies carried out so as to fit the data in the various models. The results of this investigation will be discussed in detail in this presentation.

Probing the Emission Mechanism and Magnetic Field of Neutrino Blazars with Multiwavelength Polarization Signatures

Abstract The characteristic two-component blazar spectral energy distribution (SED) can be of either leptonic and/or hadronic origins. The potential association of the high-energy neutrino event IceCube-170922A with the flaring blazar TXS 0506+056 indicates that hadronic processes may operate in a blazar jet. Despite multiwavelength follow-ups of the event and extensive theoretical modelings, the radiation mechanisms and the underlying magnetic field strength and configuration remain poorly understood. In this paper, we consider generic leptonic and hadronic blazar spectral models with distinct magnetic field strengths and radiation mechanisms. We analytically reproduce the SEDs and neutrino flux of hadronic models, and predict their X-ray to γ-ray polarization degrees. Furthermore, by performing relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations taking into account the polarization-dependent radiation transfer, we study the time-dependent multiwavelength polarization variability of the proton synchrotron (PS) model under a shock scenario. Our results suggest that the high-energy polarization degree and the neutrino flux can be jointly used to pinpoint the leptonic and/or hadronic blazar radiation mechanisms in the X-ray and γ-ray bands, and to infer the magnetic field strength in the emission region. In addition, the temporal multiwavelength polarization signatures in the PS shed light on the jet energy composition and the dynamical importance of magnetic fields in the blazar emission region. Future multiwavelength polarimetry facilities such as the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-ray Observatory together with neutrino telescopes such as IceCube can provide unprecedented observational constraints to probe the blazar radiation mechanisms and jet dynamics.

Particle Acceleration and Synchrotron Self-Compton Emission in Blazar Jets. I. An Application to Quiescent Emission

Abstract There are still some important unanswered questions about the detailed particle acceleration and escape occurring during quiescent epochs. As a result, the particle distribution that is adopted in the blazar quiescent spectral model has numerous unconstrained shapes. To help remedy this problem, we introduce an analytical particle transport model to reproduce the quiescent broadband spectral energy distribution of blazars. In this model, the exact electron distribution is solved from a generalized transport equation that contains the terms describing the first-order and second-order Fermi acceleration, the escape of particles due to both advection and spatial diffusion, and energy losses due to synchrotron emission and inverse-Compton scattering of an assumed soft photon field. We suggest that advection is a significant escape mechanism in blazar jets. We find that in our model, the advection process tends to harden the particle distribution, which enhances the high-energy components of the resulting synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton spectra from the jets. Our model is able to roughly reproduce the observed spectra of the extreme BL Lac object 1ES 0414+009 with reasonable assumptions about the physical parameters.

Decomposing blazar spectra into lepto‐hadronic emission components

The recently reported coincidences between high‐energy neutrino events and major blazar outbursts reinforce the relevance of lepto‐hadronic emission models for blazars. We study the influence of physical parameters on the neutrino output by modeling blazar spectral energy distributions self‐consistently assuming a relativistically propagating acceleration zone surrounded by a larger cooling zone. We find that the gross features of the spectral energy distribution can readily be explained with the model. A rigorous test requires time‐resolved measurements of blazar spectral energy distributions during an outburst and high‐statistics neutrino measurements to discriminate the leptonic and hadronic emission components.

Exploring the radio and GeV-TeV γ-ray connection in the different blazar sub-classes

AbstractAs revealed by the Fermi-LAT, blazars represent the dominant population of γ-ray emitters. An essential step for understanding blazar physics and the emission mechanisms is the investigation of a possible connection between the observed low- and high-energy emission. A number of works report on the existence of a significant correlation between radio emission and 0.1-100 GeV γ rays. How does this correlation evolve when very high energy (VHE, E > 0.1 TeV) γ rays are considered? The possible radio-VHE emission connection is still elusive mainly because of the lack of a homogeneous VHE sky coverage. In this work we explore the connection between the parsec-scale radio emission and GeV-TeV γ rays by using two unbiased blazar samples extracted from the 1FHL ( E > 10 GeV) and 2FHL (E > 50 GeV) Fermi catalogs. For comparison, we perform the same analysis by using the 3FGL 0.1-300 GeV γ-ray energy flux. Overall, we find out that there is no significant connection between radio and γ-ray emission above 10 GeV for all the blazar sub-classes with the exception of high synchrotron peaked objects. Conversely, when 0.1-300 GeV γ-ray energies are considered, a strong and significant correlation is found for all of the blazar sub-classes. We interpret these results within the context of the blazar spectral energy distribution properties.

Update on the Multi-Frequency Monitoring of Blazars with Medicina and Noto

AbstractThe Medicina and Noto radiotelescopes have been employed for over 14 years to monitor the flux density variations of a vast sample of blazars at different radio frequencies. Radio data are essential components of blazar spectral energy distribution (SED, spanning from radio waves to gamma rays), whose trend with luminosity and shape changes provide decisive information on the physics of extra-galactic jets and, eventually, on the mechanism extracting energy from the central black hole in radio-loud AGN. Observations presently carried out at 5, 8 and 24 GHz have taken advantage of the continually evolving control system installed at the antennas. A new, batch-wise analysis tool was also produced, in order to easily handle and reduce the datasets acquired in monthly sessions. We here describe the latest developments and achievements.

The sequence of Compton dominance in blazars based on data from WISE and Fermi-LAT

The two-component broad-band spectral energy distributions of blazars were suggested to form a sequence in which (1) the peak frequency of the low-energy (synchrotron) component nu_syn is anticorrelated with the synchrotron luminosity L_syn, and (2) the luminosity ratio of the high-energy (inverse Compton) to synchrotron components q = L_IC / L_syn (Compton dominance) increases with L_syn from the BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) to the flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). The Compton dominance parameter is an important probe of plasma magnetisation in the blazar zones within relativistic jets. We investigate a sample of blazars detected by WISE in the mid-infrared (MIR) band and by Fermi/LAT in the GeV gamma-ray band, with the focus on the distribution of luminosities and photon indices. Our findings are the following: (1) the MIR photon index Gamma_W12 is a useful probe of the blazar sequence, with the exception of low-luminosity BL Lacs that are most likely contaminated by their host galaxies (L_W1 ~ 10^44 erg/s and Gamma_W12 < 1); (2) Gamma_W12 is correlated with the gamma-ray photon index Gamma_1-100GeV, with the MIR luminosity L_W1, and with the Fermi/WISE Compton dominance q_FW = L_1GeV/L_W1; (3) a clean separation between FSRQs and BL Lacs can be seen in the parameter space of Gamma_W12 and q_FW; (4) the observed distribution of MIR luminosity L_W1 vs. Compton dominance q_FW for the entire sample of blazars can be modeled as a sequence of lepto-magnetic jet powers in the range (log_10 P_eB) in [42:45] with the preference for sub-equipartition magnetic fields P_B/P_e in [0.05:1], assuming fixed bulk Lorentz factor Gamma_j = 15, fixed jet opening angle Gamma_j Theta_j = 0.3, fixed radiative efficiency of jet electrons epsilon_em = 50%, and that external radiation luminosity scales like L_ext propto (P_eB)^(1.6) (parameter degeneracies are discussed).

Exploring the connection between radio and GeV-TeV γ-ray emission in the 1FHL and 2FHL AGN samples

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) revealed that blazars, representing the most extreme radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) population, dominate the census of the gamma-ray sky, and a significant correlation was found between radio and gamma-ray emission in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range. However, the possible connection between radio and very high energy (VHE, E>0.1 TeV) emission still remains elusive, owing to the lack of a homogeneous coverage of the VHE sky. The main goal of this work is to quantify and assess the significance of a possible connection between the radio emission on parsec scale measured by the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and GeV-TeV gamma-ray emission in blazars, which is a central issue for understanding the blazar physics and the emission processes. We investigate the radio VLBI and high energy gamma-ray emission by using two large and unbiased AGN samples extracted from the first and second Fermi-LAT catalogs of hard gamma-ray sources detected above 10 GeV (1FHL) and 50 GeV (2FHL). For comparison, we perform the same correlation analysis by using the 0.1-300 GeV gamma-ray energy flux provided by the third Fermi-LAT source catalog. We find that the correlation strength and significance depend on the gamma-ray energy range with a different behavior among the blazar sub-classes. Overall, the radio and gamma-ray emission above 10 GeV turns out to be uncorrelated for the full samples and for all of the blazar sub-classes with the exception of high synchrotron peaked (HSP) objects, which show a strong and significant correlation. On the contrary, when 0.1-300 GeV gamma-ray energies are considered, a strong and significant correlation is found for the full blazar sample as well as for all of the blazar sub-classes. We interpret and explain this correlation behavior within the framework of the blazar spectral energy distribution properties.

An Investigation of Blazars without Redshifts: Not a Missing Population at High Redshift

Abstract We investigate a sample of 622 blazars with measured fluxes at 12 wavebands across the radio-to-gamma-ray spectrum but without spectroscopic or photometric redshifts. This sample includes hundreds of sources with newly analyzed X-ray spectra reported here. From the synchrotron peak frequencies, estimated by fitting the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs), we find that the fraction of high-synchrotron-peaked blazars in these 622 sources is roughly the same as in larger samples of blazars that do have redshifts. We characterize the no-redshift blazars using their infrared colors, which lie in the distinct locus called the WISE blazar strip, then estimate their redshifts using a KNN regression based on the redshifts of the closest blazars in the WISE color–color plot. Finally, using randomly drawn values from plausible redshift distributions, we simulate the SEDs of these blazars and compare them to known blazar SEDs. Based on all these considerations, we conclude that blazars without redshift estimates are unlikely to be high-luminosity, high-synchrotron-peaked objects, which had been suggested in order to explain the “blazar sequence”—an observed trend of SED shape with luminosity—as a selection effect. Instead, the observed properties of no-redshift blazars are compatible with a causal connection between jet power and electron cooling, i.e., a true blazar sequence.
