Determination of Botanical Composition and Rangeland Status of Yedigöller Region (Erzurum/Türkiye)

This study investigated the botanical composition, soil cover, and quality of a rangeland located in the Yedigöller region of İspir district, Erzurum province, Türkiye, in 2020. The Loop method was employed to determine these parameters. A total of 44 taxa were identified in the study area, with Asteraceae (13 taxa), Poaceae (8 taxa), and Lamiaceae (4 taxa) being the most dominant families. The overall soil cover was determined to be 70.29%. Poaceae species accounted for 40.38% of the vegetation cover, followed by Fabaceae (3.55%) and other families (56.07%). The rangeland quality was assessed as "Poor" with a quality index of 2.17. These findings indicate that the rangeland in the study area is of low quality and requires improvement measures.

The complete chloroplast genome of Phyllostachys aureosulcata McClure (Bambusoideae: Poaceae): Comparative genomics and phylogenetic analysis

Phyllostachys aureosulcata McClure is a resilient bamboo species that is cultivated primarily as an ornamental plant in Beijing, Henan, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, China. In this study, we sequenced and de novo assembled its complete chloroplast genome. The size of the complete genome was 139,701 base pairs (bp), which contained a large single-copy region of 83,223 bp, a small single-copy region of 12,882 bp, and a pair of inverted repeats of 21,798 bp each. Comparative analyses with 29 other species, including 17 from the genus Phyllostachys Torr., eight from the subfamily Bambusoideae, and four from the family Poaceae, revealed that Phyllostachys has a highly conserved chloroplast genome, showing similarities with other species within the subfamily and family. All analyzed genomes contained 111 unique genes, including 30 tRNAs, 4 rRNAs, and 77 protein-coding genes. Notably, the ycf1, ycf2, and accD genes were absent in all species of the family Poaceae. Phylogenetic reconstruction among 70 species of Bambusoideae, representing three tribes—Arundinarie, Bambuseae, and Olyreae—confirmed the monophyly of Phyllostachys, with a sister relationship between Phyllostachys aureosulcata and Phyllostachys propinqua McClure. The chloroplast genome-based phylogeny also revealed a sister relationship between the tribes Bambuseae and Olyreae, with their shared node rooted by Arundinarie. The comprehensive analysis of chloroplast genomes provides valuable insights into the comparative genomics and phylogenetics of Phyllostachys and the Bambusoideae subfamily.

Comprehensive Identification and Expression Analysis of the Multidrug and Toxic Compound Extrusion (MATE) Gene Family in Brachypodium distachyon.

The Multidrug and Toxic Compound Extrusion (MATE) proteins serve as pivotal transporters responsible for the extrusion of metabolites, thereby playing a significant role in both plant development and the detoxification of toxins. The MATE gene family within the Brachypodium distachyon, which is an important model organism of the Poaceae family, remains largely unexplored. Here, a comprehensive identification and analysis of MATE genes that complement B. distachyon were conducted. The BdMATE genes were systematically categorized into five distinct groups, predicated on an assessment of their phylogenetic affinities and protein structure. Furthermore, our investigation revealed that dispersed duplication has significantly contributed to the expansion of the BdMATE genes, with tandem and segmental duplications showing important roles, suggesting that the MATE genes in Poaceae species have embarked on divergent evolutionary trajectories. Examination of ω values demonstrated that BdMATE genes underwent purifying selection throughout the evolutionary process. Furthermore, collinearity analysis has confirmed a high conservation of MATE genes between B. distachyon and rice. The cis-regulatory elements analysis within BdMATEs promoters, coupled with expression patterns, suggests that BdMATEs play important roles during plant development and in response to phytohormones. Collectively, the findings presented establish a foundational basis for the subsequent detailed characterization of the MATE gene family members in B. distachyon.

Ultrastructural and thermal analyses reveal novel insights into low-temperature survival mechanisms of hydrated seeds of Poaceae species from alpine regions

Global warming leads to snow cover loss in the alpine ecosystem, exposing seeds to extreme diurnal temperature fluctuations during the growing season. The risk of freezing increases as seeds have increased moisture content. Studying the survival mechanisms of seeds at low temperatures can help analyze changes in alpine meadow populations and target conservation efforts. Here, we used three species of Poaceae as a model to understand freezing stress.Fully imbibed Elymus dahuricus, Festuca elata, and Lolium multiflorum seeds were subjected to programmed cooling at fast and slow rates (-1.0/0.05°C/min) and then assessed for survival. Differential Scanning Calorimetry was used to analyze thermal transitions during cooling. HE-stained paraffin sections and a Transmission Electron Microscope were employed to observe internal morphology and ultrastructural changes.E. dahuricus seeds exhibited greater tolerance to low temperatures than those of the other two species, with an LT50 of approximately -20°C for both cooling rates and maintained relatively intact ultrastructure. The observed Low-temperature exotherm (LTE) correlated with seed survival, with viability decreasing extensively below LTE.Fast cooling caused fewer changes to seed morphology and ultrastructure than slow cooling, suggesting that the primary survival mechanism during fast cooling is freezing avoidance through supercooling. Seeds exhibited greater freeze tolerance under slow than fast cooling, primarily by migrating intracellular water to extracellular spaces where it froze, causing considerable damage to cell ultrastructure and forming apparent cavities in some seeds.

Exploring Evolutionary Pathways and Abiotic Stress Responses through Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of the Alternative Oxidase (AOX) Gene Family in Common Oat (Avena sativa).

The alternative oxidase (AOX), a common terminal oxidase in the electron transfer chain (ETC) of plants, plays a crucial role in stress resilience and plant growth and development. Oat (Avena sativa), an important crop with high nutritional value, has not been comprehensively studied regarding the AsAOX gene family. Therefore, this study explored the responses and potential functions of the AsAOX gene family to various abiotic stresses and their potential evolutionary pathways. Additionally, we conducted a genome-wide analysis to explore the evolutionary conservation and divergence of AOX gene families among three Avena species (Avena sativa, Avena insularis, Avena longiglumis) and four Poaceae species (Avena sativa, Oryza sativa, Triticum aestivum, and Brachypodium distachyon). We identified 12 AsAOX, 9 AiAOX, and 4 AlAOX gene family members. Phylogenetic, motif, domain, gene structure, and selective pressure analyses revealed that most AsAOXs, AiAOXs, and AlAOXs are evolutionarily conserved. We also identified 16 AsAOX segmental duplication pairs, suggesting that segmental duplication may have contributed to the expansion of the AsAOX gene family, potentially preserving these genes through subfunctionalization. Chromosome polyploidization, gene structural variations, and gene fragment recombination likely contributed to the evolution and expansion of the AsAOX gene family as well. Additionally, we hypothesize that AsAOX2 may have potential function in resisting wounding and heat stresses, while AsAOX4 could be specifically involved in mitigating wounding stress. AsAOX11 might contribute to resistance against chromium and waterlogging stresses. AsAOX8 may have potential fuction in mitigating ABA-mediated stress. AsAOX12 and AsAOX5 are most likely to have potential function in mitigating salt and drought stresses, respectively. This study elucidates the potential evolutionary pathways of the AsAOXs gene family, explores their responses and potential functions to various abiotic stresses, identifies potential candidate genes for future functional studies, and facilitates molecular breeding applications in A. sativa.

EPAD1 Orthologs Play a Conserved Role in Pollen Exine Patterning.

The pollen wall protects pollen during dispersal and is critical for pollination recognition. In the Poaceae family, the pollen exine stereostructure exhibits a high degree of conservation with similar patterns across species. However, there remains controversy regarding the conservation of key factors involved in its formation among various Poaceae species. EPAD1, as a gene specific to the Poaceae family, and its orthologous genes play a conserved role in pollen wall formation in wheat and rice. However, they do not appear to have significant functions in maize. To further confirm the conserved function of EPAD1 in Poaceae, we performed an analysis on four EPAD1 orthologs from two distinct sub-clades within the Poaceae family. The two functional redundant barley EPAD1 genes (HvEPAD1 and HvEPAD2) from the BOP clade, along with the single copy of sorghum (SbEPAD1) and millet (SiEPAD1) from the PACMAD clade were examined. The CRISPR-Cas9-generated mutants all exhibited defects in pollen wall formation, consistent with previous findings on EPAD1 in rice and wheat. Interestingly, in barley, hvepad2 single mutant also showed apical spikelets abortion, aligning with a decreased expression level of HvEPAD1 and HvEPAD2 from the apical to the bottom of the spike. Our finding provides evidence that EPAD1 orthologs contribute to Poaceae specific pollen exine pattern formation via maintaining primexine integrity despite potential variations in copy numbers across different species.

Effects of atmospheric CO2 concentration on transpiration and leaf elongation responses to drought in Triticum aestivum, Lolium perenne and Festuca arundinacea.

Leaf elongation is vital for Poaceae species' productivity, influenced by atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and climate-induced water availability changes. Although [CO2] mitigates the effects of drought on reducing transpiration per unit leaf area, it also increases total leaf area and water use. These complex interactions associated with leaf growth pose challenges in anticipating climate change effects. This study aims to assess [CO2] effects on leaf growth response to drought in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and wheat (Triticum aestivum). Plants were cultivated in growth chambers with [CO2] at 200 or 800ppm. At leaf six to seven unfolding, half of the plants were subjected to severe drought treatment. Leaf elongation rate (LER) was measured daily, whereas plant transpiration was continuously recorded gravimetrically. Additionally, water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content along with water and osmotic potentials in the leaf growing zone were measured at drought onset, mid-drought and leaf growth cessation. Elevated [CO2] mitigated drought impacts on LER and delayed growth cessation across species. A positive correlation between LER and soil relative water content (SRWC) was observed. At the same SRWC, perennial grasses exhibited a higher LER with elevated [CO2], likely due to enhanced stomatal regulation. Despite stomatal closure and WSC accumulation, CO2 did not influence nighttime water potential or osmotic potential. The marked increase in leaf area across species resulted in similar (wheat and tall fescue) or higher (ryegrass) total water use by the experiment's end, under both watered and unwatered conditions. In conclusion, elevated [CO2] mitigates the adverse effects of drought on leaf elongation in three Poaceae species, due to its impact on plant transpiration. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into CO2 and drought interactions that may help anticipate plant responses to climate change.

Analysis of the 5' Untranslated Region Length-Dependent Control of Gene Expression in Maize: A Case Study with the ZmLAZ1 Gene Family.

The untranslated regions (UTRs) within plant mRNAs play crucial roles in regulating gene expression and the functionality of post-translationally modified proteins by various mechanisms. These regions are vital for plants' ability to sense to multiple developmental and environmental stimuli. In this study, we conducted a genome-wide analysis of UTRs and UTR-containing genes in maize (Zea mays). Using the ZmLAZ1 family as a case study, we demonstrated that the length of 5' UTRs could influence gene expression levels by employing GUS reporter gene assays. Although maize and arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), as well as rice (Oryza sativa), have distinct functional categories of UTR-containing genes, we observed a similar lengthwise distribution of UTRs and a recurring appearance of certain gene ontology (GO) terms between maize and rice. These suggest a potentially conserved mechanism within the Poaceae species. Furthermore, the analysis of cis-acting elements in these 5' UTRs of the ZmLAZ1 gene family further supports the hypothesis that UTRs confer functional specificity to genes in a length-dependent manner. Our findings offer novel insights into the role of UTRs in maize, contributing to the broader understanding of gene expression regulation in plants.

Characterization of Fusarium solani Associated with Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) Root Rot in Henan, China.

The aim of this study was to characterize the Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) population obtained from tobacco roots with root rot symptoms by morphological characteristics, molecular tests, and assessment of pathogenicity. Cultures isolated from roots were white to cream with sparse mycelium on potato dextrose agar, with colony growth of 21.5 ± 0.5 to 29.5 ± 0.5 mm after 3 days. Sporodochia were cream on carnation leaf agar (CLA) and Spezieller Nährstoffarmer agar (SNA), and macroconidia formed in sporodochia were 3 to 6 septate and straight to slightly curved, with wide central cells, a slightly short blunt apical cell, and a straight to almost cylindrical basal cell with a distinct foot shape, ranging in size from 20.92 to 64.37 × 3.91 to 6.57 μm. Microconidia formed on CLA were reniform and fusiform, with 0 or 1 to occasionally 2 septa, that formed on long monophialidic conidiogenous cells, with a size range of 5.99 to 32.32 × 1.76 to 5.84 μm. Globose to oval chlamydospores were smooth- to rough-walled, 6.5 to 13.3 ± 0.37 μm in diameter, and terminal or intercalary and occurred singly, in pairs, or occasionally in short chains on SNA. Molecular tests consisted of sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the translation elongation factor-1 alpha (EF-1α), RNA polymerase II largest subunit, and second largest subunit regions. All the obtained sequences revealed 98.14 to 100% identity to F. solani in both Fusarium ID and Fusarium MLST databases. Phylogenetic trees of the EF-1α gene and concatenated three-locus data showed that isolates from tobacco in Henan grouped in the proposed group 5, which is nested within FSSC clade 3 (FSSC 5). Twenty-seven of the 28 isolates caused root rot in artificially inoculated tobacco seedlings, with a disease severity index ranging from 15.00 ± 1.67 to 91.11 ± 2.22. Cross-pathogenicity tests showed that three representative isolates were virulent to six species of Solanaceae and two species of Poaceae, with disease severity indexes ranging from 6.12 ± 0.56 to 84.44 ± 0.00, indicating that these isolates have a wide host range. The results may inform the control of tobacco root rot through improved crop rotations.

Net primary productivity response to precipitation varied with different ecosystems in the Tibetan Plateau over the past two millennia

The long-term pattern of terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) response to climate change is important for estimating aboveground biomass and assessing its ecosystem function. NPP accumulation generally increased during warming intervals. However, the relationship between terrestrial NPP and precipitation change has not been comprehensively elucidated owing to the lack of long-term quantitative NPP records. Here, we present an NPP sequence quantitatively reconstructed from annual layers of fossil pollen assemblages spanning the past two millennia. We also explore the relationship between NPP and precipitation during the periods dominated by different ecosystem types. The results revealed that the NPP variation is positively correlated with the alpine meadow, dominated by Cyperaceae species, and negatively correlated with the alpine steppe, dominated by Artemisia and Poaceae species. Additionally, the NPP sequence recorded a remarkable ∼200-year periodic oscillation, which was also recorded in the precipitation sequence. The periodic NPP showed an in-phase relationship with precipitation when the regional ecosystem was marked by the symbiosis of alpine steppe and alpine meadow, and showed an anti-phase relationship with precipitation when the regional ecosystem was dominated by alpine steppe. This study elucidates the relationships between terrestrial NPP and precipitation during the past two millennia and provides foundations for predicting future terrestrial productivity.

Identification and expression analysis of nuclear factor Y transcription factor genes under drought, cold and Eldana infestation in sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid)

BackgroundThe Nuclear Factor Y (NF-Y) transcription factor (TF) gene family plays a crucial role in plant development and response to stress. Limited information is available on this gene family in sugarcane.ObjectivesTo identify sugarcane NF-Y genes through bioinformatic analysis and phylogenetic association and investigate the expression of these genes in response to abiotic and biotic stress.MethodsSugarcane NF-Y genes were identified using comparative genomics from functionally annotated Poaceae and Arabidopsis species. Quantitative PCR and transcriptome analysis assigned preliminary functional roles to these genes in response to water deficit, cold and African sugarcane borer (Eldana saccharina) infestation.ResultsWe identify 21 NF-Y genes in sugarcane. Phylogenetic analysis revealed three main branches representing the subunits with potential discrepancies present in the assignment of numerical names of some NF-Y putative orthologs across the different species. Gene expression analysis indicated that three genes, ShNF-YA1, A3 and B3 were upregulated and two genes, NF-YA4 and A7 were downregulated, while three genes were upregulated, ShNF-YB2, B3 and C4, in the plants exposed to water deficit and cold stress, respectively. Functional involvement of NF-Y genes in the biotic stress response were also detected where three genes, ShNF-YA6, A3 and A7 were downregulated in the early resistant (cv. N33) response to Eldana infestation whilst only ShNF-YA6 was downregulated in the susceptible (cv. N11) early response.ConclusionsOur research findings establish a foundation for investigating the function of ShNF-Ys and offer candidate genes for stress-resistant breeding and improvement in sugarcane.

Plant diversity in the understory of Eucalyptus plantations on Hainan Island and its response to environmental factors

Research on understory plant diversity and its response to environmental factors helps in the sustainable development of plantation forests. We investigated the characteristics of understory plant diversity in Eucalyptus plantation forests located in Dongfang, Ding'an, Tunchang, and Lingao on Hainan Island by leveraging the plot survey method, and analyzing how the understory plant diversity in these Eucalyptus plantation forests responds to environmental factors. The results showed that a total of 124 plant species belonging to 62 families and 112 genera were recorded in the sampled plots of the Dongfang, Ding’an, Tunchang, and Lingao regional sites on Hainan Island, among which species of Fabaceae and Poaceae comprised the largest number of plants. The number of species and plant diversity indices of the shrub layer and herb layer in Eucalyptus plantation forests varied at different sites, The richest understory vegetation in Tunchang, located in the center of Hainan Island, and the highest α-diversity whether gauged by species or phylogenetically. The similarity of the understory plant community species was greatest between Ding’an and Tunchang, whereas the difference in composition was largest between Dongfang and the other three sites. Phylogenetically, the understory plant community at Ding’an had the most distant affinities among species, whereas that at Tunchang had the closest affinities among species. The results of the Mantel test and redundancy analysis revealed differing correlations between plant diversity in the shrub layer versus herb layer and various environmental factors. In particular, elevation and annual average temperature are the two main factors influencing plant diversity in the shrub layer, and soil available nitrogen and annual average sunshine duration are the two main factors influencing plant diversity in the herb layer. Variance decomposition showed that the combined effect of soil, climate, and topography factors is the main driver shaping plant diversity in the shrub layer of the understory in Eucalyptus plantation forests, while the combined effect of climate and soil factors is the main one determining plant diversity in their herb layer.

The impact of mixed planting of Poaceae species in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau region on forage yield, soil nutrients, and soil microbial communities.

Establishing cultivated grassland in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region is an effective method to address the conflict between vegetation and livestock. However, the high altitude, low temperature, and arid climate in the region result in slow regeneration and susceptibility to degradation of mixed cultivation grassland containing perennial legumes and gramineous plants. Therefore, we aim to through field experiments, explore the feasibility of establishing mixed cultivation grassland of Poaceae species in the region by utilizing two grass species, Poa pratensis L. and Puccinellia tenuiflora. By employing a mixture of P. pratensis and P. tenuiflora to establish cultivated grassland, we observed significant changes in forage yield over time. Specifically, during the 3rd to 6th years of cultivation, the yield in the mixed grassland was higher than in monocultures. It exceeded the yield of monoculture P. tenuiflora by 19.38% to 29.14% and surpassed the monoculture of P. pratensis by 17.18% to 62.98%. Through the analysis of soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial communities in the cultivated grassland, the study suggests that the mixed grassland with Poaceae species can enhance soil enzyme activity and improve soil microbial communities. Consequently, this leads to increased soil nutrient levels, enhanced nitrogen fixation efficiency, and improved organic phosphorus conversion efficiency. Therefore, establishing mixed grasslands with Poaceae species in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region is deemed feasible.

The Spartina alterniflora genome sequence provides insights into the salt-tolerance mechanisms of exo-recretohalophytes.

Spartina alterniflora is an exo-recretohalophyte Poaceae species that is able to grow well in seashore, but the genomic basis underlying its adaptation to salt tolerance remains unknown. Here, we report a high-quality, chromosome-level genome assembly of S. alterniflora constructed through PacBio HiFi sequencing, combined with high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) technology and Illumina-based transcriptomic analyses. The final 1.58 Gb genome assembly has a contig N50 size of 46.74 Mb. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that S. alterniflora diverged from Zoysia japonica approximately 21.72 million years ago (MYA). Moreover, whole-genome duplication (WGD) events in S. alterniflora appear to have expanded gene families and transcription factors relevant to salt tolerance and adaptation to saline environments. Comparative genomics analyses identified numerous species-specific genes, significantly expanded genes and positively selected genes that are enriched for 'ion transport' and 'response to salt stress'. RNA-seq analysis identified several ion transporter genes including the high-affinity K+ transporters (HKTs), SaHKT1;2, SaHKT1;3 and SaHKT1;8, and high copy number of Salt Overly Sensitive (SOS) up-regulated under high salt conditions, and the overexpression of SaHKT2;4 in Arabidopsis thaliana conferred salt tolerance to the plant, suggesting specialized roles for S. alterniflora to adapt to saline environments. Integrated metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses revealed that salt stress activate glutathione metabolism, with differential expressions of several genes such as γ-ECS, GSH-S, GPX, GST and PCS in the glutathione metabolism. This study suggests several adaptive mechanisms that could contribute our understanding of evolutional basis of the halophyte.

New records in the flora of Siberia and Kazakhstan

New data on the occurrence of 14 vascular plant species of Cruciferae, Liliaceae, Poaceae and Rosaceae in Kazakhstan and Siberia are reported. Fritillaria leucanthta, Potentilla exuta, P. kryloviana and P. × habievii are recorded for the first time from Kazakhstan; Cardamine occulta and Sisymbrium irio – from Siberia. Erysimum amurense is a novelty for the flora of Yakutia; Cardamine hirsuta, Сynodon dactylon and Rorippa austriaca are newly found in Altai Krai; Potentilla agrimonioides is for the first time recorded from the Kalbinskiy Ridge. For Potentilla crantzii, the first reliable finding in Kazakhstan is presented, and the second locality of P. × jakovlevii, a narrow neoendemic of Altai-within-Kazakhstan, is registered. Сynodon is recorded as a new genus for the flora of the Altai Krai while occurrence of Lepidium affine in Kemerovo Province is not confirmed. For each species, a list of recorded localities and brief data on general distribution are provided supplied with morphological comments where needed. Additionally, photos of Fritillaria leucanthta and Potentilla crantzii in their natural habitat are presented along with an image of the herbarium specimen of Potentilla × jakovlevii and morphological comparison of inflorescence and spikelet of Cynodon vs. Digitaria.

Halophytic Bacterial Endophyte Microbiome from Coastal Desert-Adapted Wild Poaceae Alleviates Salinity Stress in the Common Wheat Triticum aestivum L.

Abiotic stresses threaten the strategic crops of Poaceae (Gramineae) worldwide. Habitat-adapted microbiome of wild plants has the potential to alleviate abiotic stresses in alternate hosts. Persian Gulf's coastal deserts are colonized by halophyte plants hosting habitat-adapted halophytic microbiota. Here, endophytic bacteria from wild Poaceae in coastal deserts of the north Persian Gulf at Hormozgan province, Iran, were isolated and screened for mitigating salinity stress in wheat. Accordingly, seven dominant species of wild Poaceae in the region, i.e., Aeloropus lagopoides, Aeloropus litiralis, Chrysopogon aucheri, Cymbopogon olivieri, Desmostachya sp., Halopayrum mucronatum, and Sporbuls arabicus, were explored. In total, 367 endophytic bacteria were isolated, 90 of which tolerated 2.5-M NaCl. Of these, 38 strains were selected based on their bioactivity and applied for in vitro wheat-interaction assays under 250-mM NaCl stress. Five superior strains promoted seed germination and growth indices in rain-fed winter wheat cv. Sardari, i.e., Bacillus subtilis B14, B19, & B27, Bacillus sp. B21, and Bacillus licheniformis Ba38. In planta assays in saline soil (2.7 dS m-1) using the superior strains indicated that Bacillus sp. B21 and Bacillus licheniformis Ba38 increased germination and root and shoot lengths and their dry and fresh weights in wheat seedlings. Moreover, phenolics and flavonoids contents of wheat seedlingswere influenced by endophyte application. Thus, the coastal desert-adapted microbiome of wild Poaceae could alleviate abiotic stress and promote growth in cultivated species of Poaceae, such as wheat.

New Records of Iranian Grass Gall Midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae)

The diversity of plant species belonging to the Poaceae family in Iran is very rich with about 500 known species. Many species of gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) have a feeding relationship with plants of the Poaceae family. Despite the great species richness of Poaceae in Iran and the association between Cecidomyiidae/Poaceae, only 6 species of gall midges have been collected and identified from the plants of the Poaceae in Iran. In the present investigation related to the gall midge fauna of Iran, 3 genera namely, Calamomyia Gagné, 1969, Epicalamus Sylvén, 1998 and Mayetiola Kieffer, 1896 and 13 species namely, C. echinochloa Felt, 1916, Contarinia festucae Jones, 1940, C. floricola (Oettingen, 1927), C. lolii Metcalfe, 1933, Dasineura alopecuri (Reuter, 1895), E. phalaridis Sylvén, 1998, Lasioptera arundinis Schiner, 1854, L. calamagrostidis Rübsaamen, 1893, L. donacis Coutin, 2001, Mayetiola poae (Bosc, 1817), Stenodiplosis sorghicola (Coquillett, 1899), S. geniculati (Reuter, 1895) and S. panici Plotnikov 1926 are reported for the first time from the country. The adult specimens were obtained by rearing from their larvae on 13 genera and 13 species of Poaceae. The genus Calamomyia Gagné 1969, which is distributed in the Nearctic region, is reported for the first time from the Palearctic region.

Utilization of Plants as Traditional Food by The Dayak Iban Community of Mensiau Village, Batang Lupar District, Kapuas Hulu Regency

The Iban Dayak people use forest plants from non-timber forest products (NTFPs) as traditional food. The purpose of the study was to study traditional foods and to record the types of forest plants used, processing methods, and efforts to maintain their sustainability by the Dayak Iban community in Mensiau Village, Batang Lupar District, Kapuas Hulu Regency. Interviews with the determination of respondents by purposive sampling. The Iban Dayak tribe has 14 types of traditional foods that are used for daily needs, certain holidays, and traditional ceremonies using 56 types of forest plants (33 families). The families with the most species were 8 species of Arecaceae, 6 species of Zingiberaceae, and 5 species of Poaceae. A total of 37 species have the greatest usefulness value (UV) (1). The most widely used habitus were herbs (26,78%) The most widely used plant parts were leaves (49,25%). How to process it by cooking boiled, sauteed, and eaten directly (lalap). Conservation efforts are carried out based on the local wisdom of the Iban Dayak community with certain rules and carry out plant cultivation in forests, fields, gardens, and house yards.

Surveying and mapping cereals and legumes wild relatives in Mount Hermon (Bekaa, Lebanon).

Crop Wild Relatives (CWR) should be highly prioritized, monitored, and conserved as they have an immense effect on sustainability and livelihood. In this study we aim to survey and map cereal and legume wild relatives of Fabaceae and Poaceae families. Mount Hermon, Bekaa side, Lebanon. A set of 46 CWR species were targeted based on desk selection analysis and prioritization by the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas genebank for their potential importance in breeding programs. A botanical survey of 17 sites of the various habitats of Mount Hermon was performed during April-June 2021 using a systematic transect/quadrate sampling method. Recorded genera and species were accurately georeferenced and then mapped with the DIVA-GIS program. In total, 854 occurrences were observed belonging to 34 species of Fabaceae and 12 species of Poaceae. High H' Shannon diversity values were recorded in three sites (Al Fakiaa, Sham El Hafour and Ain Ata- al Berke) of the Mount with values ranking between 2.45 and 2.83. This was confirmed by the richness distribution maps of genera and species. Richness distribution maps provide relevant clues on candidate sites for high concentrations of each of the species under study. At least the three sites, hosting 87% of the surveyed CWR's species, can be considered for further insitu conservation actions.
