Contribution to the Lithuanian flora of lichens and allied fungi. IV.

Abstract Four species of lichens and two species of lichenicolous fungi were reported as new to Lithuania: Chaenotheca sphaerocephala, Endophragmiella franconica, Merismatium decolorans, Ochrolechia androgyna, Pertusaria ophthalmiza, Stereocaulon taeniarum. Endophragmiella franconica was reported on a new host - Cladonia coniocraea. The teleomorph of Abrothallus suecicus was recorded for the first time in the country. Three species, Chaenotheca sphaerocephala, Endophragmiella franconica and Stereocaulon taeniarum, were recorded for the first time in the Baltic states. Microcalicium arenarium, previously known in Lithuania only from literature data, was confirmed with certainty for the first time. A revision of the Candelaria concolor complex revealed that only C. pacifica is known in Lithuania.

Lichen-Forming and Lichenicolous Fungi New to Kazakhstan

Although there is a published lichen flora of Kazakhstan, the diversity of lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi of this country is incompletely known. Here we publish records of 41 species of lichens and 2 species of lichenicolous fungi for the first time from Kazakhstan. All collections are from the Kazakh Altai and the Saur Mountains, East Kazakhstan. Caloplaca monacensis, Immersaria iranica, Lepraria elobata, L. rigidula and Parmelina pastillifera are new for the wider surroundings of Kazakhstan, as they have neither been found in Central Asia so far, nor in southern Siberia. Several species are new to Central Asia, but were already known from the nearby Siberia.

New species of lichenicolous fungi from the Canary Islands

Three new species of lichenicolous fungi from the Canary Islands (Leightoniomyces canariensis, Lichenodiplis anomalus and Perigrapha phaeophysciae), are described as new to science. A description of each species is given together with notes on their chemistry, distribution, ecology and taxonomy. Similar species are briefly discussed.

A Contribution to the Knowledge of Lichenized and Lichenicolous Fungi in Albania

Hence the number of taxa recorded from Albania is raised by more than 100 percent. Species which are of special interest because of their biogeography and their connection with conservation priorities are Baeomyces placophyllus, Caloplaca diphyodes, C. fuscorufa, Degelia atlantica, D. plumbea, Evernia illyrica, Heterodermia speciosa, Lobaria amplissima, Lobarina scrobiculata, Leptogium palmatum, Lethariella intricata, Megalaria grossa, Pachyphiale carneola, Pannaria conoplea, Parmeliella triptophylla, Parmotrema robustum, Physcia biziana, Physconia venusta, Ramalina canariensis, Sticta fuliginosa, and Verrucaria limborioides.

Lichenicolous Fungi from the Caucasus: New Records and a First Synopsis

Laeviomyces pertusariicola and Perigrapha superveniens are reported new to Russia and Asia, Sclerococcum simplex new to Asia and Unguiculariopsis lettaui new to Russia. The genus Laeviomyces is resurrected in order to distinguish L. pertusariicola.

New species of lichenicolous fungi from Bolivia

Lichenicolous fungi from the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia

Abstract Fifty-one species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from Kamchatka, all but three being new to the area. Epinephroma gen. nov., Endococcus peltigericola sp. nov. (on Peltigera membranacea), Epinephroma kamchatica sp. nov. (on Nephroma parile) and Stigmidium buelliae sp. nov. (on Buellia disciformis) are described as new to science. Phoma lobariicola is new to Asia and Russia, Epicladonia stenospora, Plectocarpon peltigerae, Sphaerellothecium propinquellum and Tremella cetrariicola are new to Asia, Zwackhiomyces sphinctrinoides is new to Russia.

Phylogenetic placement of lichenicolous Phoma species in the Phaeosphaeriaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes)

More than twenty species of lichenicolous fungi have been described in Phoma, a large anamorphic genus of primarily plant-associated pathogens with broad geographic distributions. We obtained nuclear and mitochondrial rDNA sequences from 19 fungal cultures isolated from specimens representing four described and two undescribed lichenicolous species in the genus. Our multilocus phylogeny indicates that lichenicolous Phoma species represent at least two phylogenetically distinct clades in the Phaeosphaeriaceae, one including a new species, Phoma puncteliae, isolated from a specimen of Punctelia rudecta collected in Maryland, USA, and another group of primarily lichenicolous species. This latter group includes four described lichenicolous Phoma species, an unidentified melanized rock fungus, and a new lichenicolous Phoma species isolated from Xanthomendoza species collected in Canada that we are naming P. xanthomendozae. Some specimens in this clade collected from different lichen genera and species were found to be very similar genetically, which calls into question the recent practice of recognizing lichenicolous Phoma species mainly by differences in host preference.

Phaeospora rimosicola (Verrucariaceae, Ascomycota) – новий для України вид ліхенофільних грибів

The data concerning species of lichenicolous fungi – Phaeospora rimosicola (Leight. ex Mudd) Hepp ex Stein that is new for Ukraine, are presented. Ph. rimosicola differs from morphologically similar species, Muellerella lichenicola (Sommerf.) D. Hawksw., having 3–4-septate spores and 8-spores asci and from related species, Phaeospora parasitica (Lönnr.) Arnold, having perithecia, asci and ascospores with smaller sizes. Keywords: Ukrainian Carpathians, Carpathian biosphere reserve, Rhizocarpon , Phaeospora parasitica , Muellerella lichenicola .

Some noteworthy lichenicolous fungi from Khabarovsk Territory of Russia.

Eight species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from the Russian Far East, seven of which are new to the area. Species concepts of Endococcus pseudocyphellariae and Subhysteropycnis maculiformans are broadened, and both species are for the first time reported from the Northern Hemisphere and on Pseudocyphellaria perpetua. Evernia esorediosa is a new host species for Lichenostigma maureri and Parmelia squarrosa for Phoma physciicola.

Twenty species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from “Stolby” Reserve, 17 of which are new to its territory. Cornutispora ciliata and Hawksworthiana peltigericola are new to Asia and Russia, Polycoccum peltigerae is new to Asia, Tremella everniae is new to Russia.

Epiphytic Lichen Mycota of the Virgin Forest Reserve Rajhenavski Rog (Slovenia)

A list of 128 taxa (127 species) of lichens, 6 species of lichenicolous fungi and 2 non-lichenized fungi traditionally included in lichenological literature from the virgin forest Rajhenavski Rog and its surroundings in the southeastern part of Slovenia is presented. The lichen Gyalecta derivata, the lichenicolous fungus Homostegia piggotii, and the non-lichenized fungus Mycomicrothelia pachnea are new to Slovenia. The lichenized fungi Chaenotheca trichialis, C. xyloxena, Lecanactis abietina, Lecanora thysanophora, Pertusaria ophthalmiza, the lichenicolous fungi Monodictys epilepraria, Tremella hypogymniae, Taeniolella friesii, and the non-lichenized fungus Chaenothecopsis pusilla are new to the Dinaric phytogeographical region of Slovenia.

A Note About Lichenicolous Fungi from Ardahan (Turkey)

As a result of lichenological exploration in Ardahan (Turkey), thirty-four species of lichenicolous fungi belonging to 15 genera were determined on 20 different lichenized fungi. Three lichenicolous fungi — Intralichen lichenicola, Lichenoconium lichenicola, Polycoccum evae — are reported as new to Turkey and the Middle East. In addition Lichenostigma rupicolae, firstly reported from Turkey was also found on Pertusaria sp. for the second time in the world. Their geographical distribution are presented.

A Preliminary Checklist of Lichens and Lichenicolous Fungi from the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina, USA

From 242 collections 120 determined species representing 68 genera of lichens are reported from a two-day survey of privately owned and protected bluff and bottomland forests in Darlington and Florence Counties of South Carolina in May 2008. We also report a handful of specimens representing apparently undescribed species in the genera Arthonia, Melaspilea and Phaeographis. Two species of lichenicolous fungi, Sphinctrina tubiformis and Minutoexcipula tuckerae, are also reported (both from Pertusaria thalli). Species richness and composition suggests a healthy forest environment.

New records of lichens and lichenicolous fungi for Russia and the Caucasus

Four species of lichens and 11 species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from the Republic of Daghestan for the first time for the Caucasus region. Of these, 7 taxa are new to Russia: Caloplaca badioreagens Tretiach & Muggia, Caloplaca polycarpa (A.Massal.) Zahlbr., Lichenothelia renobalesiana D.Hawksw. & V.Atienza, Stigmidium rouxianum Calat. & Triebel, Toninia episema (Nyl.) Timdal, Toninia leptogii Timdal, and Verrucaria latericola Erichsen. Comments on their geographic distribution, habitats, substrate, and comparisons with morphologically similar taxa are presented.

Lichens and lichenicolous fungi of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, Alaska, in a global biodiversity context

The lichen flora of southeast Alaska has been explored for over 100 years, but remains poorly known. In the first survey of its kind from the region, we report 766 taxa of lichens and lichenicolous fungi from the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park. Coming from a park only 53 km 2 in size, this represents one of the largest numbers of lichenized and lichenicolous fungi per unit area ever reported and the largest number ever reported from any United States National Park of any size. One lichen genus, four lichen species and one species of lichenicolous fungus are described as new to science: Steineropsis alaskana gen. et sp. nov. (Peltigerales), Coccotrema hahriae and Pertusaria mccroryae (both Pertusariales), Stereocaulon klondikense (Lecanorales) and Corticifraga scrobiculatae (Lecanoromycetes incertae sedis). The new combinations Coccotrema minutum and Nesolechia fusca are made and Parmelia elongata is reduced to synonymy under Hypogymnia duplicata. Seventy-five taxa could not be assigned a species name at this time and represent a pool of critical and/or potentially undescribed taxa. Thirty-four taxa are new or confirmed for North America, including seventeen lichen taxa, one species of saprophytic Dothideomycetes, and sixteen species of lichenicolous fungi. Five taxa of eastern North American distribution are reported for the west for the first time. A total of 196 taxa are new for Alaska. We report the presence of novel secondary chemical compounds in Bryoria, Cladonia, Hypogymnia and Pertusaria. Based on a Chao analysis of single and two-time occurrences we estimate we have captured not more than 83% of the macrolichen and 64% of the microlichen flora, with the total flora likely exceeding 1000 taxa. We provide an overview of the lichen inventories with highest species number worldwide and discuss the Klondike in the context of broader patterns in lichen richness. Global models of climate change in the coming century are unanimous in predicting greater temperature increases at higher latitudes than at low latitudes. We hope that our data will lead to a reconsideration of the potential extent of biodiversity at high latitudes.

Four new species of lichenicolous fungi, Athelia arachnoidea (Berk.) Jülich, Trichonectria hirta (A. Bloxam) Petch., Arthonia clemens (Tul.) Th. Fr. and Muellerella lichenicola (Sommerf.) D. Hawksw., are cited for Ukrainian Roztochya. Three of these species are reported for the physical-geographical region Roztochya for the first time. Keywords: lichenicolous fungi, Roztochya.

38 species of lichens and 2 species of lichenicolous fungi are recorded for the first time for Daghestan Reserve (Sarykum barkhan). 38 species are new for Daghestan Republic, and 5 species are new for Caucasus Mountains. Physcia aipolioides and Rinodina epiianthina are reported for the first time for Russia.

Pronectria pilosa (Hypocreaceae) sp. nov. and other lichenicolous fungi found on Collemataceae in the Iberian Peninsula

Ten species of lichenicolous fungi on Collemataceae in the Iberian Peninsula are recorded. A new species, Pronectria pilosa, on Collema furfuraceum is proposed and three new records from the Iberian Peninsula are indicated, Endococcus pseudocarpus, Nectria brutia and Toninia leptogii. The known distribution of several treated species is enlarged notably.

Notes on some lichenicolous fungi species from Turkey II

Nine species of lichenicolous fungi are reported from various provinces of Turkey. Five species of these (Endococcus janae, Lichenochora aprica, Pronectria xanthoriae, Sarcopyrenia cylindrospora, and Zwackhiomyces cervinae) are reported for the first time from Turkey. All these taxa, except Zwackhiomyces cervinae, are also new to Asia. Comments on their habitats and substrata and a short diagnosis are provided for each new taxon new to Turkey.
