Fibre materials for advanced technical textiles

In this article, most kinds of fibre materials used for advanced technical textiles are systematically introduced. The definition of advanced technical textiles and the scope of fibre materials used for advanced technical textiles are given in the introductory chapter, PET, nylon and PP fibres are explained as three major conventional fibres for advanced technical textiles. High mechanical performance fibres such as carbon fibre and aramid fibre, and high heat resistance fibres such as SiC fibre are introduced in chapters 3 and 4, respectively. Several kinds of function fibres such as separation function, optical, electric conductive, adhesive are introduced in chapters 5 to 10. Specialty material fibres such as PVA and PLA, modified fibres for specific function and modified fibres for specific end-use are also introduced in chapters 11 to 13. The final chapter is assigned to introduce nano-fibres which include three kinds of organic nano-fibres manufactured by bottom-up way, by electro-spinning and by top-down way, and also carbon nano-tube and nano-fibre.

A Method for Preparing Metal Specifications for Structural Components

Specifying requirements for metallic components subject to stress and wear has long been done in most industries using the “guess and test" method. The high quality application of the guess and test method includes post test characterization of the successful component using mechanical, chemical and microstructural analysis at the very least. This paper examines a semi-quantitative design and test method that can cut months off of a traditional design sequence. Integration of semi-quantitative stress analysis and failure analysis into the design procedure allows more straightforward problem elimination, when problems arise. A few examples of how to streamline the design process for steel components is given. Much of the approach is valid for other materials, with limitations based on anisotropy, which is more pronounced in many specialty materials than in steel.

Direct rapid high-temperature alloy prototyping by hybrid plasma-laser technology

Direct metal or end-use-material prototyping technology has received widespread attention in the world. However, it is difficult to obtain the full density metal or high performance specialty material parts only by using laser beam at present. The authors have thus conducted development research of direct and rapid plasma deposition manufacturing (PDM) by using plasma arc beam, but there are some problems such as the part accuracy and surface state are required to improve, and the energy is insufficient to melt high-temperature alloy and refractory materials perfectly if using micro-plasma arc gun although it is able to gain near net shape parts. In this paper, a new direct and rapid metal prototyping technology by using hybrid plasma-laser deposition manufacturing (PLDM) is developed for obtaining near net shape full density and good surface intractable high-temperature alloy prototype. Unlike PDM technology, a laser beam is entered into the plasma arc beam as assisting heat energy, and added for surface modify. In this study, attempts are made to improve part accuracy, basic performance of surface and inner. The results show that the laser beam can diminish the molten pool diameter, enhance the stability of the plasma arc beam, improve the surface state and make plasma arc-igniting easier. The inner layer of the part fabricated with this process has no porosity, and the deposition layers are metallurgical bonded. Thus the PLDM technology is able to overcome the shortcomings of existing RP and RT, and can be used for direct refractory and intractable materials prototyping.

Understanding organofluorine chemistry. An introduction to the C–F bond

Fluorine is the most electronegative element in the periodic table. When bound to carbon it forms the strongest bonds in organic chemistry and this makes fluorine substitution attractive for the development of pharmaceuticals and a wide range of speciality materials. Although highly polarised, the C-F bond gains stability from the resultant electrostatic attraction between the polarised C delta+ and F delta- atoms. This polarity suppresses lone pair donation from fluorine and in general fluorine is a weak coordinator. However, the C-F bond has interesting properties which can be understood either in terms of electrostatic/dipole interactions or by considering stereoelectronic interactions with neighbouring bonds or lone pairs. In this tutorial review these fundamental aspects of the C-F bond are explored to rationalise the geometry, conformation and reactivity of individual organofluorine compounds.
