A Schema for the Coordinated Education of Elementary School Teachers

SUMMARY: Just as it is vital for the teacher to have extensive knowledge and skills in those disciplines in which he teaches, he should also have the ability to draw upon knowledge and employ skills from fields of specialization in education. The implications for teaching specialized education courses are directed toward and adapted to normal classroom procedures. Student teachers should be placed in a setting where they will have the opportunity to observe and participate with individuals who possess expertise in the more esoteric roles of public school education. It is felt that the proposed plan would tie together the various facets of professional education and focus them more intensively on the problems of classroom teaching. As a result, the teacher candidate would have a more useful student teaching experience.

The Psychology of Deafness: Sensory Deprivation, Learning, and Adjustment

The author states that this monograph was prepared for advanced courses in audiology, language pathology, special education, and psychology. Especially fascinating is the first section on the nature and extent of deafness, treated from the psychological point of view. This section includes an excellent chapter on the effect of sensory deprivation on behavior. Most of this book deals with experimental evidence on the psychology of deafness, much of it statistically treated. This includes studies on deafness and mental development, motor functioning, personality, language, and the relation of these factors to other handicaps. This book will serve as an excellent authoritative reference work in its special field.

The March and April issues of EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN carried the main body of summer session offerings in the education of exceptional children in colleges and universities. This year, the listings were collated under the direction of Herbert Goldstein, president, CEC Division on Teacher Education. The offerings listed here were received after these issues went to press. For the earlier listing, please turn to page 336 in March and page 429 in April. This annual service feature appears as a professional service for all those interested in furthering their preparation in special education. All courses deal specifically with some phase of special education. The symbol “u” indicates undergraduate credit only, and the symbol “g” indicates graduate credit only. When courses can be taken for credit on either level “u-g” is used. Since summer session plans are sometimes changed during the season, students are advised to write to the institution for final confirmation of course offerings.
