The Impacts of Micro‐Porosity and Mineralogical Texture on Fractured Rock Alteration

AbstractGeochemically driven alterations of fractures in multi‐mineral media can create altered layers (ALs) at the fracture‐matrix interface. Spatial variations in the AL significantly influence mass transfer across the interface, and the hydraulic and mechanical properties of the fractured medium. A real‐rock based microfluidic experiment reported spatial variations in AL thickness despite the initially smooth fracture surface, suggesting potential effects of matrix heterogeneity on AL development. However, the respective contribution of structural and mineralogical characteristics is still poorly understood. Using the microfluidic experimental data and a micro‐continuum reactive transport model, we systematically evaluated how micro‐porosity and initial mineral texture impact AL development and thus the overall reactive transport behaviors. Our simulation results confirmed that the extent of AL spatial variations, mainly controlled by mineralogical texture, influences the evolution of reaction and permeability in different ways. Accounting for spatial heterogeneity in mineral distribution produces “channeling” structures in ALs and lower overall reaction (by up to 35.6%), but larger permeability increase (by up to 9.8%). The characteristic length of the reactive mineral cluster was observed to dominate the internal texture of ALs. Whereas the presence of micro‐porosity can enhance mineral accessibility via improving connectivity for flow and transport, and lead to both higher bulk reaction, that is, thicker ALs, and permeability enhancement. Considerations of surface roughness with characteristic length on the same order of magnitude as mineral texture did not change the overall development of AL, which further highlights the importance of accounting for rock matrix properties in predicting long‐term evolution of fractured media. The resulting spatial variations of ALs and their impacts on bulk properties, however, are expected to be further complicated by the coupling of chemical and mechanical processes, and may trigger matrix disaggregation, erosion and other mechanisms of fractured media alteration.

Spatial variations in effective elastic thickness and loading ratio in the Indo-Burma subduction zone based on the joint inversion of Bouguer coherence and admittance

Our knowledge of the mechanical structure and geodynamic evolution of the Indo-Burma Subduction (IBS) Zone is currently limited. The effective elastic thickness (Te) reflect the thermo-rheological characteristics of the subduction zone that aid in understanding the long-term deformation and geodynamic evolution. In the present study, we employed joint inversion of wavelet admittance and coherence to obtain the spatial variation in Te and the loading structure (F) over IBS based on satellite gravity and topography data. The spatial pattern of Te and F exhibit a remarkable correlation with the tectonic features of IBS. The Indo-Burma ranges (IBR) and the Central Myanmar basins (CMB) in the Burma Terrain (BT) are characterized by high lithospheric strength (Te = 35–40 km). In comparison, low lithospheric strength (Te = 15–20 km) prevails over the Shan Plateau (SP). High F (0.6–0.8) values over the Bay of Bengal and the SP indicate the dominance of the internal loading, while medium F (0.5–0.6) values over the CMB suggest mixed loading, probably related to the combined effect of thick sediments and dense downgoing slabs. Comparative analysis of Te with shear wave velocity and curie point depth indicates that the thermal state is crucial in controlling the lithosphere strength. Further, the absence of modern interplate seismic activity over the strong coupling zones characterized by high Te in BT suggests that the Indo-Burma megathrust is locked.

Diagenetic history and porosity evolution of the Middle Permian clastic-carbonate mixed system, Indus Basin, Pakistan: Implications for reservoir development

This study deals with unraveling the diagenesis-induced porosity evolution in a mixed clastic-carbonate sequence of the Middle Permian Indus Basin, Pakistan. Multiple data sets including outcrop, petrography, cathodoluminescence, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mineralogy, and geochemical isotopic compositions were integrated to establish a link between porosity evolution and diagenesis. The spatial thickness and facies variations of the strata at outcrop scale are inherently controlled by the underlying bathymetry of the basin with deepening westward trend. The low values of δ18O of the target strata, relative to average values of the Permian carbonate, hints to diagenetic alteration in the strata. The data sets used in this study reveal modification of the strata in four environments, that is, i) early marine diagenesis indicated by micritization, pervasive dolomitization and isopachous fibrous cements, followed by ii) meteoric dissolution, and iii) shallow burial diagenetic processes including the precipitation of blocky cement, compaction of skeletal and non-skeletal allochems, and stylolites, and iv) a deep burial environment, characterized by pressure solution, and micro-fractures. The clastic intervals host subangular to subrounded quartz grains, floating textures, and almost complete absence of deleterious clay minerals, consequently resulting in the preservation of primary porosity. The primary porosity of carbonate intervals is preserved in the form of intercrystalline and intracrystalline porosity. The secondary porosity evolved through various diagenetic phases in the form of fractures and dissolution. The diagenetic solution mediated by organic matter in carbonates may have experienced both bacterial decomposition and thermochemical sulfate reduction, precipitating sulfides within the pores. The plug porosity/permeability analyses generally suggest high porosity in the siliciclastic unit, and carbonates with wackestone fabric while lower values were observed for the inner shelf pure carbonate facies. However, both intervals show very low permeability values probably due to isolated moldic pores and intense micritization. Therefore, clastic intervals may provide an opportunity to serve as a moderate reservoir; however, the carbonate intervals possess very low permeability values and could generally be considered as low-moderate reservoir potential.

A comparative study of empirical and machine learning approaches for soil thickness mapping in the Joshimath region (India)

Precisely determining the thickness of soil, which is an essential parameter in environmental modelling, presents difficulties when applied to heterogenic large-scale areas. Current prediction models primarily concentrate on shallow soil depths and lack comprehensive spatial coverage. This study addresses this limitation by presenting the results of soil thickness assessment along three important roads in the Joshimath region (Indian Himalaya). Three different methods were examined incorporating geological and geomorphological data as input to obtain soil thickness maps: (1) a customized version of the conventional geomorphologically indexed soil thickness (GIST) model, modified specifically for the peculiarities of the research area, (2) the GIST model enhanced by Monte Carlo simulations (GIST-MCS), and (3) the random forest (RF) algorithm integrated with the GIST model (GIST-RF). By quantifying their errors and conducting validation using geophysical tests, the effectiveness of the models was assessed. Moreover, a critical comparison of the results provided useful insights to understand the peculiarities of the test site and how to adapt the site-specific customization of the models to the local features. The results indicate that the GIST model inadequately accounted for the substantial spatial variations in soil thickness observed across the study area. This is evident from the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 5.28 m and the mean absolute error of 3.94 m. In contrast, the GIST-MCS model showed improvements, achieving an RMSE of 4.48 m and a mean absolute error of 2.86 m. However, the GIST-RF model demonstrated superior performance, yielding an RMSE of 2.40 m and a mean absolute error of 1.64 m. From a practical perspective, the generated soil thickness maps are particularly significant because they may serve as a crucial input parameter for further studies, including geotechnical assessments, environmental modelling, and decision-making processes.

Three-dimensional wall-thickness distributions of unruptured intracranial aneurysms characterized by micro-computed tomography

Aneurysmal rupture is associated with wall thinning, but the mechanism is poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the three-dimensional wall-thickness distributions of unruptured intracranial aneurysms. Five aneurysmal tissues were investigated using micro-computed tomography. First, the wall thickness was related to the aneurysmal wall appearances during surgery. The median wall thicknesses of the translucent and non-translucent walls were 50.56 and 155.93 µm, respectively (p < 0.05) with significant variation in the non-translucent wall thicknesses (p < 0.05). The three-dimensional observations characterized the spatial variation of wall thicknesses. Thin walls showed a uniform thickness profile ranging from 10 to 40 µm, whereas thick walls presented a peaked thickness profile ranging from 300 to 500 µm. In transition walls, the profile undulated due to the formation of focal thin/thick spots. Overall, the aneurysmal wall thicknesses were strongly site-dependent and spatially varied by 10 to 40 times within individual cases. Aneurysmal walls are exposed to wall stress driven by blood pressure. In theory, the magnitude of wall stress is inversely proportional to wall thickness. Thus, the observed spatial variation of wall thickness may increase the spatial variation of wall stress to a similar extent. The irregular wall thickness may yield stress concentration. The observed thin walls and focal thin spots may be caused by excessive wall stresses at the range of mechanical failure inducing wall injuries, such as microscopic tears, during aneurysmal enlargement. The present results suggested that blood pressure (wall stress) may have a potential of acting as a trigger of aneurysmal wall injury.

The regional variation of laminar thickness in the human isocortex is related to cortical hierarchy and interregional connectivity.

The human isocortex consists of tangentially organized layers with unique cytoarchitectural properties. These layers show spatial variations in thickness and cytoarchitecture across the neocortex, which is thought to support function through enabling targeted corticocortical connections. Here, leveraging maps of the 6 cortical layers based on 3D human brain histology, we aimed to quantitatively characterize the systematic covariation of laminar structure in the cortex and its functional consequences. After correcting for the effect of cortical curvature, we identified a spatial pattern of changes in laminar thickness covariance from lateral frontal to posterior occipital regions, which differentiated the dominance of infra- versus supragranular layer thickness. Corresponding to the laminar regularities of cortical connections along cortical hierarchy, the infragranular-dominant pattern of laminar thickness was associated with higher hierarchical positions of regions, mapped based on resting-state effective connectivity in humans and tract-tracing of structural connections in macaques. Moreover, we show that regions with similar laminar thickness patterns have a higher likelihood of structural connections and strength of functional connections. In sum, here we characterize the organization of laminar thickness in the human isocortex and its association with cortico-cortical connectivity, illustrating how laminar organization may provide a foundational principle of cortical function.

Isolated Crustal Partial Melting in the Southern Tibetan Plateau From H‐κ‐c Method

AbstractThe crustal thickness and average Vp/Vs ratio are basic parameters to understand the current state and the tectonic processes in the Tibetan Plateau (TP). We gather receiver functions in the central‐southern TP and extract spatial variation of crustal thickness and Vp/Vs ratio using the H‐κ‐c method with careful quality control and stability analysis. Our results highlight the regions with high Vp/Vs ratios in the central‐southern Qiangtang block and two isolated patches around the Yarlung‐Zangbo suture, suggesting crustal partial melting. The disconnected high‐Vp/Vs patches imply a restrained pattern for present‐day crustal flow in the southern TP. Further correlation with mantle observations suggests that the high Vp/Vs region in the north can be attributed to mantle upwelling after lithospheric delamination, and the two isolated patches in the south may be related to the tearing of the Indian mantle lithosphere.

Effect of the Spatially-Varied Electron Mean Free Path on Vortex Matter in a Superconducting Pb Island Grown on Si (111)

In this work we report theoretical calculations of a superconducting island in a strong vortex confinement regime. The obtained results reveal the evolution of the superconducting condensate with an applied magnetic field, depending on the spatial profile of the electron mean-free path in the sample. The results of this study provide an insight about the emergent superconducting properties under such conditions, using the Ginzburg-Landau numerical simulations where spatial variation of thickness of the island and the corresponding variation of the mean free path, omnipresent in similar structures of Pb grown on Si (111), are taken into account. These results offer a new route to tailor superconducting circuits by nanoengineered mean free path, using for example the controlled ion-bombardment on thin films, benefiting from the here shown impact of the spatially-varying mean free path on the vortex distribution, phase of superconducting order parameter, and the critical fields.

Spatio-Temporal Heterogeneity of Soil Moisture on Shrub–Grass Hillslope in Karst Region

Influenced by the topography, the spatial variation of soil thickness on karst slopes is very large, and accordingly the spatial variation of soil moisture is also large. Therefore, analyzing the spatial heterogeneity of soil moisture on hillslopes is important for maintaining ecosystem stability. Combining geostatistical methods and GIS technology, the spatial variability and distribution pattern of soil moisture and the influencing factors of spatial variation and surface soil moisture (0–7 cm) on a typical karst shrub–grass hillslope were analyzed. The results showed that the mean soil moisture and coefficient of variation (CV) ranged between 25.7–42.6% and 10.3–20.9%, respectively, showing a moderate variation. The soil moisture presented a moderate or strong spatial autocorrelation in the sampling scale. The occurrence of rainfall events can exert a great influence on reducing the spatial heterogeneity of soil moisture. The spatial distribution pattern of soil moisture showed roughly plaque or stripe distribution. When soil moisture was much lower, the patch space fragmentation of soil moisture was higher. The soil moisture was higher in the low and middle parts of the plot. We can conclude that factors such as topography, vegetation, and weather conditions will exert a significant effect on soil moisture spatial variability. Areas with lower slope and higher vegetation coverage were more conducive to the retention of soil moisture.

Viscous flow through a thin‐walled elastic hollow ellipsoid—Experiments to demonstrate a potential flowmeter

AbstractLarge deformation of an elastic hollow ellipsoid may be used as the mechanism of a flowmeter. It is seen as being inspired by human biology, when passing through fluid internally. The investigation on this potential was carried out where simply the relationships among pressure drop across an ellipsoid, deformation, flowrate and fluid viscosity were obtained. The elastic hollow ellipsoid was made from Silicone, which has a long axis of 0.05 m, a short axis of 0.03 m, and a wall thickness of 3.5 × 10−4 ± 4.6 × 10−5 m. A monotonic relationship between fluid flowrate and a representative diameter of the ellipsoid was found. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) aqueous solutions were used as a more viscous media so the effect of viscosity was explored. Unlike the firm result on flowrate gauging, it was inconclusive on differentiating the effect of viscosity. When the inlet and the outlet of the fluid were switched over, the geometrical expansion of the ellipsoid was found to be sensitive to the small spatial variation of wall thickness (a non‐uniformity caused by manufacturing limitation). Nevertheless, this work has demonstrated an interesting flowmeter and further explorations on viscosity effect may be warranted.

Shell Microstructure as an Indicator of Changing Environmental Conditions in Coastal Oceans

Ocean ecosystems are undergoing pronounced changes in temperature and chemistry. Biomineralizing animals, such as mollusks, that produce calcium carbonate shells can be sensitive to these changes, and this may be reflected in the microstructure of their shells. Shell microstructure potentially offers conservation paleobiologists an additional tool for assessing spatiotemporal changes in environmental conditions resulting from human activities. Previous work suggests that environmental factors, such as temperature and pH, can affect how mollusks build their shells. Certain mollusks continuously lay down tablets of nacre on the interior of their shells, and the thickness of these tablets may reflect the temperature of the environment in which the organism lived. We have been investigating spatial and temporal variation in tablet thickness in two groups of marine mollusks. Our first case study focuses on a variety of present-day abalone species along a temperature gradient. Data were collected from individuals raised in aquaculture at controlled temperatures, as well as wild-grown individuals from different latitudes in the Pacific Ocean. Our second case study focuses on the marine bivalve Nucula proxima from the northern Gulf of Mexico. Live and dead Nucula proxima specimens were collected from 20 meters water depth offshore Louisiana and Alabama; radiocarbon analyses indicate that these specimens represent both present-day and pre-Industrial populations. Our preliminary results show: 1) little variation in tablet thickness among abalone grown in aquaculture at different temperatures, suggesting that fine scale variation in temperature has little effect on abalone microstructure; and 2) an increase in tablet thickness during the past 250 years for N. proxima offshore Louisiana, but little change in N. proxima microstructure in coastal Alabama over past centuries.

Integrated hydrogeophysical and GIS based demarcation of groundwater potential and vulnerability zones in a hard rock and sedimentary terrain of Southern India

This research has identified the groundwater potential and vulnerability zones in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, India. The Schlumberger electrode array has been used to conduct vertical electrical sounding (VES) at 95 sites with a maximum electrode spacing of 150 m. The study area comprises of hard rock and sedimentary formations. Geographical Information System (GIS) has been used to integrate the geoelectrical data and to prepare spatial variation maps for various parameters. Finally, groundwater potential and vulnerability zones have been demarcated, and these outputs have been validated using water level and nitrate data, respectively. The Dar-Zarrouk parameters such as longitudinal conductance (S), transverse unit resistance (T), and aquifer anisotropy (λ) have been used along with the spatial variation of resistivity and aquifer thickness to find out groundwater potential areas with the support of GIS. The thickness of topsoil, weathered zone and fractured zone are not uniform in the research area. Top soil plus weathered zone acts as a water table (phreatic) aquifer, which extends up to 38 m from the surface. Fractured zone extends up to 45 m, which acts as a kind of confined/semi-confined aquifer. Open and bore wells have been constructed to tap groundwater from the unconfined (water table) and confined/semi-confined aquifers, respectively. High to very high groundwater potential areas are associated with low resistivity, high thickness, low longitudinal conductance, high transverse unit resistance and high aquifer anisotropy areas. Very high groundwater potential areas are mostly confined to flood plain (alluvium) deposits in the central portion of the study area. High potential areas are noticed in the northern part, whereas low potential areas are noticed in the southern part. The areas with high longitudinal conductance indicate low permeable zones with less possibility of external pollution. Since agriculture is an important activity in the study region, this work will be useful to provide water supply for irrigation as well as for domestic needs.

The impact of thickness heterogeneity on soft tissue biomechanics: a novel measurement technique and a demonstration on heart valve tissue.

The mechanical properties of soft tissues are driven by their complex, heterogeneous composition and structure. Interestingly, studies of soft tissue biomechanics often ignore spatial heterogeneity. In our work, we are therefore interested in exploring the impact of tissue heterogeneity on the mechanical properties of soft tissues. Therein, we specifically focus on soft tissue heterogeneity arising from spatially varying thickness. To this end, our first goal is to develop a non-destructive measurement technique that has a high spatial resolution, provides continuous thickness maps, and is fast. Our secondary goal is to demonstrate that including spatial variation in thickness is important to the accuracy of biomechanical analyses. To this end, we use mitral valve leaflet tissue as our model system. To attain our first goal, we identify a soft tissue-specific contrast protocol that enables thickness measurements using a Keyence profilometer. We also show that this protocol does not affect our tissues' mechanical properties. To attain our second goal, we conduct virtual biaxial, bending, and buckling tests on our model tissue both ignoring and considering spatial variation in thickness. Thereby, we show that the assumption of average, homogeneous thickness distributions significantly alters the results of biomechanical analyses when compared to including true, spatially varying thickness distributions. In conclusion, our work provides a novel measurement technique that can capture continuous thickness maps non-invasively, at high resolution, and in a short time. Our work also demonstrates the importance of including heterogeneous thickness in biomechanical analyses of soft tissues.

3D S-wave velocity structure of the Ningdu basin in Jiangxi province inferred from ambient noise tomography with dense array

The Ningdu basin, located in southern Jiangxi province of southwest China, is one of the Mesozoic basin groups which has exploration prospects for geothermal energy. A study on the detailed velocity structure of the Ningdu basin can provide important information for geothermal resource exploration. In this study, we deployed a dense seismic array in the Ningdu basin to investigate the 3D velocity structure and discuss implications for geothermal exploration and geological evolution. Based on the dense seismic array including 35 short-period (5 s-100 ​Hz) seismometers with an average interstation distance of ∼5 ​km, Rayleigh surface wave dispersion curves were extracted from the continuous ambient noise data for surface wave tomographic inversion. Group velocity tomography was conducted and the 3D S-wave velocity structure was inverted by the neighborhood algorithm. The results revealed obvious low-velocity anomalies in the center of the basin, consistent with the low-velocity Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. The basement and basin-controlling fault can also be depicted by the S-wave velocity anomalies. The obvious seismic interface is about 2 ​km depth in the basin center and decreases to 700 ​m depth near the basin boundary, suggesting spatial thickness variations of the Cretaceous sediment. The fault features of the S-wave velocity profile coincide with the geological cognition of the western boundary basin-controlling fault, which may provide possible upwelling channels for geothermal fluid. This study suggests that seismic tomography with a dense array is an effective method and can play an important role in the detailed investigations of sedimentary basins.

Non‐Uniform Distribution of Current in Plane of Large‐Area Lithium Electrodes

AbstractThis work asserts that increasing the planar area of a lithium (Li) electrode is a challenge in view of ensuring a uniform plating and stripping and spatial uniformity for the state‐of‐health over the surface of lithium. A significant in‐plane heterogeneity is observed for the symmetric Li cells with the stack area in the range of 24 to 96 cm2. The cycling of the large‐area lithium electrodes is performed inside a dedicated home‐made electrochemical setup capable of incorporating electrodes of different sizes. The cycling data and post‐mortem analysis reveal a clear non‐uniformity in the distribution of current and aging for the lithium electrodes having a size larger than the coin‐cell and relevant to the commercial applications. It is shown that the inhomogeneous aging manifests mainly in the formation of dead Li film with a spatial variation in thickness and impedance over the surface of the Li electrode.

The interplay between deformation and deposition in a Pleistocene push moraine: New insight from structural interpretation and area-depth-strain analysis of the growth strata

There are many examples suggesting that push moraine formation requires building up of the proglacial wedge and then post-depositional folding and/or faulting. Only a few studies have been carried out on syntectonic deposition and erosion within proglacial sediment wedges; however, the resulting growth strata were determined based on the high variability in thickness and occurrence of erosional unconformities across the deformed sequence. This study shows how structural interpretation and the area-depth-strain (ADS) balancing method of the growth strata can be applied to better understand the interplay between deformation and deposition within an evolving push moraine primarily composed of a folded sequence of a glaciofluvial fan. This approach, together with analysis of the onlap/overlap relationships, allowed us to determine the relative rate between deposition and deformation. Moreover it provides an insight into the topography of the push moraine that may be inherited not only from the geometry of deformation structures but also from depositional processes controlling the spatial distribution and thickness variation of the growth strata. This study also gives an opportunity to reconstruct the ranges of probable parameters to quantitatively describe the heavily eroded push moraine in terms of the primary topography, height and relative time frame within which it formed. In addition, the probable thermo-hydro-mechanical properties of the deformed strata are interpreted in terms of drained/undrained conditions of volume strain evidenced by structural data and possibilities of lateral flow from beneath synclines into anticlines indicated by ADS-based balancing.

Thaw Settlement Monitoring and Active Layer Thickness Retrieval Using Time Series COSMO-SkyMed Imagery in Iqaluit Airport

Thaw consolidation of degrading permafrost is a serious hazard to the safety and operation of infrastructure. Monitoring thermal changes in the active layer (AL), the proportion of the soil above permafrost that thaws and freezes periodically, is critical to understanding the conditions of the top layer above the permafrost and regulating the construction, operation, and maintenance of facilities. However, this is a very challenging task using ground-based methods such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR) or temperature sensors. This study explores the integration of interferometric measurements from high-resolution X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and volumetric water content (VWC) data from SoilGrids to quantify detailed spatial variations in active layer thickness (ALT) in Iqaluit, the territorial capital of Nunavut in Canada. A total of 21 SAR images from COSMO Sky-Med (CSK) were first analyzed using the freely connected network interferometric synthetic aperture radar (FCNInSAR) method to map spatial and temporal variations in ground surface subsidence in the study area. Subsequently, we built an ALT retrieval model by introducing the thaw settlement coefficient, which takes soil properties and saturation state into account. The subsidence measurements from InSAR were then integrated with VWC extracted from the SoilGrids database to estimate changes in ALT. For validation, we conducted a comparison between estimated ALTs and in situ measurements in the airport sector. The InSAR survey identifies several sites of ground deformation at Iqaluit, subsiding at rates exceeding 80 mm/year. The subsidence rate changes along the runway coincide with frost cracks and ice-wedge furrows. The obtained ALTs, ranging from 0 to 5 m, vary significantly in different sediments. Maximum ALTs are found for rock areas, while shallow ALTs are distributed in the till blanket (Tb), the intertidal (Mi) sediments, and the alluvial flood plain (Afp) sediment units. The intersection of taxiway and runway has an AL thicker than other parts in the glaciomarine deltaic (GMd) sediments. Our study suggests that combining high-resolution SAR imagery with VWC data can provide more comprehensive ALT knowledge for hazard prevention and infrastructure operation in the permafrost zone.

Crustal structure and tectonic evolution of Greater Maldive Ridge, Western Indian Ocean, in the context of plume-ridge interaction

The Greater Maldive Ridge (GMR), consisting of the Maldive Ridge (MR) and Deep Sea Channel (DSC) region, is the N-S trending, middle segment of Chagos-Laccadive Ridge system. This ridge system is widely considered to be the repository representing the interaction between Central Indian Ridge spreading centre and Reunion plume. The present study investigates in detail, spatial variations in effective elastic thickness (Te), isostasy and crustal structure of GMR using high resolution satellite derived gravity, residual geoid and bathymetry data. Estimated Te values along the GMR from 2D and 3D flexural modelling ranges from 6.5–16.5 km with comparatively lower Te values over MR (7–9 km) and slightly higher values over the DSC region (>10 km). Geoid to Topography Ratio computed for two wavelength bands shows almost similar kind of variation along the ridge with a maximum value of 1.4 m/km in the DSC region, decreasing northwards to 0.6 m/km over MR. Integrating results from the present study with crustal thickness, Moho undulations and Curie depth along the entire length of the GMR suggest that MR was formed in the vicinity of spreading centre while DSC region was under a long transform fault which has given rise to the gap zone between Chagos Bank and Maldive Ridge during plume-ridge interaction.

Inverse design strategies for buckling-guided assembly of 3D surfaces based on topology optimization

Complex three-dimensional (3D) mesostructures in advanced functional materials are attracting increasing interest, due to their widespread applications. Mechanically-guided 3D assembly through compressive buckling provides deterministic routes to a rich diversity of 3D mesostructures and microelectronic devices, with feature sizes ranging from sub-microscale to millimeter-scale. Existing studies established inverse design methods that map the target 3D geometry onto an unknown 2D precursor, but mainly focusing on filamentary ribbon-type geometries. Although strategies relying on spatial thickness variation of 2D precursors have been reported to achieve inverse design of 3D surfaces, this could lead to a lack of compatibility with well-developed planar fabrication technologies. In the framework of buckling-guided 3D assembly, this paper presents a computational method based on topology optimization to solve the inverse design problem of 3D surfaces from 2D precursors with uniform thickness distributions. Specifically, curvy ribbon components were exploited to discretize nondevelopable target surfaces, and then optimized to ensure that the assembled 3D surface has the best match with the target geometry. Combined computational and experimental studies over a dozen of elaborate examples, encompassing both the caged and even general target surfaces, demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.

Machine learning based inverse modeling of full-field strain distribution for mechanical characterization of a linear elastic and heterogeneous membrane

Heterogeneous membranes or films are thin and soft structures with spatial variations in material property and thickness. Mechanical behavior of heterogeneous membranes is not well understood, mainly due to the difficulty in obtaining accurate and reliable material property data. To understand the mechanical behavior of these materials, accurate and efficient characterization methods for heterogeneous membranes are needed. In this paper, an inverse method based on machine learning is developed to efficiently extract mechanical properties from full-field strain distributions. This approach is demonstrated on a flat heterogeneous membrane with uniform thickness formed by up to four linear elastic synthetic materials in a grid arrangement, and deforming in a moderate strain range (true strain ∼10%). The results show that the machine learning method achieves accuracy comparable to the traditional inverse finite element method, and is 6 orders of magnitude faster in the demonstrated case studies.
