A self-consistent model for dust settling and the vertical shear instability in protoplanetary disks

Abstract The spatial distribution of dust particles in protoplanetary disks affects dust evolution and planetesimal formation processes. The vertical shear instability (VSI) is one of the candidate hydrodynamic mechanisms that can generate turbulence in the outer disk region and affect dust diffusion. Turbulence driven by the VSI has a predominant vertical motion that can prevent dust settling. On the other hand, the dust distribution controls the spatial distribution of the gas cooling rate, thereby affecting the strength of VSI-driven turbulence. Here, we present a semi-analytic model that determines the vertical dust distribution and the strength of VSI-driven turbulence in a self-consistent manner. The model uses an empirical formula for the vertical diffusion coefficient in VSI-driven turbulence obtained from our recent hydrodynamical simulations. The formula returns the vertical diffusion coefficient as a function of the vertical profile of the cooling rate, which is determined by the vertical dust distribution. We use this model to search for an equilibrium vertical dust profile where settling balances with turbulent diffusion for a given maximum grain size. We find that if the grains are sufficiently small, there exists a stable equilibrium dust distribution where VSI-driven turbulence is sustained at a level of αz ∼ 10−3, where αz is the dimensionless vertical diffusion coefficient. However, as the maximum grain size increases, the equilibrium solution vanishes because the VSI can no longer stop the settling of the grains. This runaway settling may explain highly settled dust rings found in the outer part of some protoplanetary disks.

Quantifying the Microstructure of Dried Deposits Using Height-Height Correlation Function.

Colloidal self-assembly has garnered significant attention in recent research, owing to applications in medical and engineering domains. Understanding the arrangement of particles in self-assembled systems is crucial for comprehending the underlying physics and synthesizing complex nano- and microscale structures. In this study, we introduce a novel methodology for analyzing the spatial distribution of particles in colloidal assemblies, focusing specifically on quantifying the microstructure of deposits formed by the evaporation of colloidal particle-laden drops. Utilizing a height-height correlation-function-based approach, we quantify variations in the height profile of deposits in radial and azimuthal directions. This approach enables the classification of the patterns into typical examples encountered in an evaporation-driven assembly. The method is demonstrated to be robust for quantifying synthetic and experimentally obtained deposit patterns, exhibiting excellent agreement in the estimated parameters. The mapping developed between pattern morphology and the quantitative measures introduced in this work may be used in a variety of applications including disease diagnosis as well as in developing pattern recognition tools.

Effect of particle size distribution variability on the permeability of hydrate-bearing sediments: A CFD study

Natural gas hydrates (NGH) are considered as a future clean energy in the era of carbon neutrality. The seepage behaviour of hydrate-bearing sediment (HBS) and its controlling factors are significant for developing effective production strategies. In this study, we aim to elucidate how the heterogeneous spatial distribution of clayey-silty sediment particles, particularly the non-uniform particle size distribution (PSD) affects the permeability of HBS. An algorithm was developed to generate the heterogeneous spatial distribution of sediment particles based on the PSD of hydrate-bearing cores extracted from Japan Nankai Trough (D50 = 122 μm). A series simulation of fluid flow in porous media based on CFD was conducted for the HBS with varying hydrate saturations (SH). The watershed segmentation algorithm was employed for the identification of pore structure, including pore space and pore throat with a detailed analysis on the pore structure evolution with SH. Host sediments with higher uniformity result in initial high permeability but the permeability reduction with increasing SH is more significant compared with that of lower uniformity. Pore throat width reduced to less than 5 μm with SH above 50% compared with its original width of ∼30 μm. Tortuosity exhibits a linear increase with SH, while permeability decreases exponentially with increasing tortuosity. We propose an improved permeability model (KCpro) based on the classical Kozeny-Carman model accounting for the change in specific surface area for non-uniform PSD in HBS with good agreement. This study confirmed the applicability of CFD modelling as a promising tool to study the seepage behaviour of HBS complementary to classical permeability experimental tests. Results of this study provide fundamental understanding on how permeability evolves in HBS with significant PSD variations in natural gas hydrate reservoirs in nature.

CFD-DEM modeling of particle dissolution behavior in stirred tanks

A CFD-DEM particle dissolution model was established to study the particle dissolution process in a stirred tank. Firstly, the model's accuracy in simulating particle size and solute concentration was validated against experimental results, the errors were 6.13% and 12.5%, respectively. Secondly, the study delved into the mechanism of mass transfer dissolution from three dimensions: solute concentration distribution, particles spatial distribution, and energy dissipation rate of particles. It was found that the larger the concentration gradient, the better the dissolution of particles. As the dissolution progresses, the coupling force between the fluid and the particles weakens, and smaller particles are more easily suspended. Lastly, the dissolution behavior of particles at different rotation speeds was investigated. Stirring speed can significantly improve the dissolution rate of particles in the particle suspension and dispersion stage, but the difference of different rotational speeds on the dissolution rate becomes smaller in the particle circulation flow stage.

Investigation of sheath structure in surface flashover induced by high-power microwave

Flashover is a major limiting factor for the transmission and miniaturization of high-power microwave (HPM) devices. We conducted a study to investigate the developmental process of surface flashover on HPM dielectric windows through particle-in-cell-Monte Carlo collision simulations. A one-dimensional spatial distribution and three-dimensional velocity distribution model is established, encompassing the entire process of surface flashover, which includes electrode field emission, single-surface multipactor, outgassing, and gas breakdown. The nonuniform mesh generation method is employed to enhance the simulation accuracy. The growth rates of electron and ion densities increase as gas pressure rises. Additionally, the discharge transitions gradually from multipactor to gas ionization dominance. Notably, a space-charge-limited (SCL)-like sheath occasionally forms during an rf cycle near the surface under intermediate background pressure (∼0.05 Torr). The SCL-like sheath cannot exist stably. Instead, it periodically disappears and appears as the rf electric field changes. The underlying physics are explained by the variations of the rf electric field, which lead to the variations in the surface charge density, thereby affecting the normal electric field. The normal electric field interacts with the spatial distribution of charged particles, ultimately leading to the formation of the SCL-like sheath. This work may facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the developmental processes of surface flashover.

On reinforcing the friction stir weld joints of AA5086-H116 using the plasma spray coatings

The fatigue properties of friction stir weld joints of AA5086-H116 alloy, reinforced with Al2O3 particles using the plasma spray coating method, were investigated after single and double weld passes. A relatively uniform distribution of reinforced particles was achieved with superior properties, even higher than that of the parent alloy. The reinforced joints had enhanced hardness as well as joint efficiency, the double pass being superior to the single pass, but at the cost of reduced total elongation. Furthermore, the reinforced double-pass joints exhibited a remarkable ∼ 55%, ∼ 14%, and ∼ 89% increase in fatigue strength compared to the as-weld, the base material, and single-pass joints, respectively. The fractographic examination mainly revealed a defect-free crack initiation mechanism with a few cases of the ones induced by defects. The superior fatigue performance was mainly attributed to the uniform spatial and size distribution of fine Al2O3 particles within the weld nugget zone, thanks to the novel weld reinforcement method used in this study, which provides a promising avenue for improving the fatigue properties of weld joints.

Intercomparisons of Tracker v1.1 and four other ocean particle-tracking software packages in the Regional Ocean Modeling System

Abstract. Particle tracking is widely utilized to study transport features in a range of physical, chemical, and biological processes in oceanography. In this study, a new offline particle-tracking package, Tracker v1.1, is introduced, and its performance is evaluated in comparison to an online Eulerian dye, one online particle-tracking software package, and three offline particle-tracking software packages in a small, high-resolution model domain and a large coarser model domain. It was found that both particle and dye approaches give similar results across different model resolutions and domains when they were tracking the same water mass, as indicated by similar mean advection pathways and spatial distributions of dye and particles. The flexibility of offline particle tracking and its similarity against online dye and online particle tracking make it a useful tool to complement existing ocean circulation models. The new Tracker was shown to be a reliable particle-tracking package to complement the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) with the advantages of platform independence and speed improvements, especially in large model domains achieved by the nearest-neighbor search algorithm. Lastly, trade-offs of computational efficiency, modifiability, and ease of use that can influence the choice of which package to use are explored. The main value of the present study is that the different particle and dye tracking codes were all run on the same model output or within the model that generated the output. This allows some measure of intercomparison between the different tracking schemes, and we conclude that all choices that make each tracking package unique do not necessarily lead to very different results.

Simulation and synoptic investigation of a severe dust storm originated from the Urmia Lake in the Middle East

Dried lake beds are one of the largest sources of dust in the world, causing environmental problems in the surrounding areas. In this study, the desiccated Urmia Lake was the primary source of dust for all nearby synoptic stations during the April 24-25, 2017 dust episode. Synoptic analysis revealed that the heavy dust storm was triggered by a strong Black Sea cyclone and a low-pressure system over central Iraq in conjunction with a vast high-pressure system. HYSPLIT-based trajectory analysis showed that high PM10 recorded over the Urmia Lake region on April 23-26, 2017, influenced western Azerbaijan, the south of the Caspian Sea, southwestern Kazakhstan, northwestern Uzbekistan, and western Turkmenistan. The dustiest air masses (PM10 > 400 µg m–3) affected the south of the Caspian Sea and western Azerbaijan. Furthermore, the WRF-Chem model was run to evaluate the spatial distribution of dust particles in the study region. The vertical profile revealed that the simulated dust concentration ascended to 5 km from the lake. The WRF-Chem dust schemes accurately simulated dust propagation and the vertical dust profile over Urmia Lake; however, the AFWA and GOCART dust schemes showed that PM10 fluctuating changes were earlier than the measured surface PM10 at five stations around Urmia Lake on April 23-26, 2017. Furthermore, the maximum amount anticipated by the model simulation was 12 h earlier than the maximum surface mass concentration of measured PM10 at the stations throughout the period.

Dust-gas coupling in turbulence- and MHD wind-driven protoplanetary disks: Implications for rocky planet formation

The degree of coupling between dust particles and their surrounding gas in protoplanetary disks is quantified by the dimensionless Stokes number. The Stokes number (St) governs particle size and spatial distributions, in turn establishing the dominant mode of planetary accretion in different disk regions. In this paper, we model the characteristic St of particles across time in disks evolving under both turbulent viscosity and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disk winds. In both turbulence- and wind-dominated disks, we find that collisional fragmentation is the limiting mechanism of particle growth. The water-ice sublimation line constitutes a critical transition point in dust settling, drift, and size regimes. For a fiducial disk evolution parameter α̃≃10−3, silicate particles inteior to the ice-line are characterized by low St (≲10−2) and sizes in the sub-mm- to 1cm-scale. Icy particles/boulders beyond the ice-line are characterized by high St (≳10−2) and sizes in the cm to dm size range. Hence, icy particles settle into a thin layer at the outer disk midplane and drift inward at velocities exceeding the gaseous accretionary flow due to substantial headwind drag. Silicate particles in the inner disk remain relatively well dispersed and are to a large extent advected inward with their surrounding gas.The St dichotomy across the ice-line translates to distinct planet formation pathways between the inner and outer disk. While pebble accretion proceeds slowly for rocky embryos within the ice-line (across most of parameter space), it does so rapidly for volatile-rich embryos beyond it, allowing for the growth of giant planet cores before disk dissipation. Through simulations of rocky planet growth, we evaluate the competition between pebble accretion and classical pairwise collisions between planetesimals. We conclude that the dominance of pebble accretion can only be realized in disks that are driven by MHD winds, slow-evolving (α̃≲10−3.5), and devoid of pressure maxima that may concentrate solids and give rise of planetesimal rings in which classical growth is enhanced. Such disks are extremely quiescent, with Shakura-Sunyaev turbulence parameters αν≲10−4. We conclude that for most of parameter space corresponding to values of αν reflected in observations of protoplanetary disks (≳10−4), pairwise planetesimal collisions constitute the dominant pathway of rocky planet accretion. Our results are discussed in the context of super-Earth origins, and lend support to the emerging view that they formed in planetesimal rings. Moreover, these results argue against a significant contribution (≳ 10%) of outer disk, carbonaceous material to the proto-Earth in the form of pebbles, in agreement with chemical and isotopic investigations of Earth’s accretion history.

Chiral structure induces spatial spiral arrangement of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to optimize electromagnetic wave dissipation

The spatial anisotropic arrangement of magnetic particles is expected to increase the magnetic resonance frequency of magnetic particles and optimize the magnetic loss. Herein, helical carbon nanocoils were used as a chiral template to induce the spatial spiral distribution of Fe3O4 particles. Meanwhile, a linear control group was constructed with carbon nanofibers as a template. The three-dimensional spiral structure promotes the confined growth and uniform distribution of Fe3O4 particles. Due to the enhanced magnetic property, chiral samples exhibited superior impedance matching compared to linear samples. Experimental tests and theoretical simulation confirm that the spatial anisotropic distribution helps to increase magnetic loss and optimize impedance matching. This work illustrates the important role of chiral structure in improving the magnetic anisotropy of magnetic nanoparticles and provides an effective strategy for optimizing electromagnetic wave dissipation.

Rotation-invariant rapid TRISO-fueled pebble identification based on feature matching and point cloud registration

The Pebble-bed reactor (PBR) utilizing TRISO-fueled pebbles is a promising Gen-IV reactor design due to its inherent safety and thermal efficiency. Identification of pebbles exiting the core may provide IAEA with additional information enhancing PBR safeguards help validate software predicting pebble flow behavior and burnup, and optimize fuel usage strategies should granular fuel management be needed. We propose a rapid, accurate pebble identification method applicable to commercial PBRs. Our approach relies on the unique spatial distribution of TRISO particles associated with each pebble, which can be extracted through X-ray CT. We developed an algorithm to identify a single pebble from 100,000 pebbles and achieved 100% identification accuracy in 90,000 trials, with arbitrary rotations and high noise levels. Remarkably, the outermost TRISO particle positions within a 0.6-mm shell suffice for unique identification. With an average identification time of under 50s per pebble, our method is compatible with PBR operational demands.

The influence of cation exchange on the possible mechanism of erionite toxicity: A synchrotron-based micro-X-ray fluorescence study on THP-1-derived macrophages exposed to erionite-Na

Fibrous erionite is the only zeolite classified as Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Carcinogenesis induced by erionite is thought to involve several factors as biopersistence, the iron role and cation exchange processes. To better understand these mechanisms, a detailed investigation at the micro scale was performed, collecting elemental information on iron and cation release and their distribution in biological systems by synchrotron micro-X-ray fluorescence mapping (SR-micro-XRF) and synchrotron micro-X-ray absorption spectroscopy (SR-micro-XANES) at the TwinMic beamline (Elettra synchrotron) and at the ID21 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). By microscopy and chemical mapping, highly detailed maps of the chemical and morphological interaction of biological systems with fibres could be produced. In detail, THP-1 cell line derived macrophages, used as in vitro model, were analysed during erionite-Na phagocytosis at different time intervals, after single dose exposure. For comparison, cellular fluorescent probes were also used to evaluate the intracellular free sodium and calcium concentrations. Synchrotron analyses visualised the spatial distribution of both fibre and mineral particle associated metals during the phagocytosis, describing the mechanism of internalisation of erionite-Na and its accessory mineral phases. The intracellular distribution of metals and other cations was mapped to evaluate metal release, speciation changes and/or cation exchange during phagocytosis. The fluorescent probes complemented microchemical data clarifying, and confirming, the cation distribution observed in the SR-micro-XRF maps. The significant cytoplasmic calcium decrease, and the concomitant sodium increase, after the fibre phagocytosis seemed due to activation of plasma membrane cations exchangers triggered by the internalisation while, surprisingly, the ion-exchange capacity of erionite-Na could play a minor role in the disruption of the two cations intracellular homeostasis. These results help to elucidate the role of cations in the toxicity of erionite-treated THP-1 macrophages and add knowledge to its carcinogenicity process.

Evaluation of the spatial distribution of aerosols produced by various respiratory activities

This study investigated the dispersion and evaporation characteristics of droplets and droplet nuclei emitted during human respiratory activities. A specially designed wind tunnel was filled with purified air, wherein selected subjects performed various respiratory activities with their heads positioned inside. An optical particle sizer was used to collect particles with sizes of 0.3–10 μm at 63 points in front of the mouth. The dilution factors were analyzed to investigate the impact of combining the exhaled airflow with ambient air on droplet evaporation. At a distance of 0.01 m from the mouth opening, the volume concentration of the particles was the highest during breathing, followed by coughing and speaking. The volumetric concentration of particles decreased with an increase in the distance from the inlet for all activities. The spatial volume concentration distribution of particles showed that coughing tended to disperse the particles in the forward direction, whereas speaking tended to disperse them laterally. Utilizing these findings in CFD analysis can provide in-depth insights into dispersion and evaporation dynamics. This can contribute significantly to the development of preventive measures through the implementation of proactive HVAC systems to effectively remove infectious particles and control the spread of infectious diseases. Future studies should explore a wider range of particle sizes and advanced sampling techniques for a clear understanding of respiratory particle dynamics and infection control strategies.

Dispersion of artificial tracers in ventilated caves

Artificial CO2 was used as a tracer along ventilated karst conduits to infer airflow and investigate tracer dispersion. In the karst vadose zone, cave ventilation is an efficient mode of transport for heat, gases and aerosols and thus drives the spatial distribution of airborne particles. Modelling this airborne transport requires geometrical and physical parameters of the conduit system, including the cross-sectional areas, the airflow and average air speed, as well as the longitudinal dispersion coefficient which describes the spreading of a solute. Four gauging tests were carried out in one mine (artificial conduit) and two ventilated caves (natural conduits). In this paper, we demonstrate that it is possible to gain reliable airflow rates and geometric information of ventilated karst conduits using CO2 as a tracer. Airflow was gauged along two caves and one mine and compared with punctual measurements made with a hot-wire anemometer. Cross-sectional areas estimated with CO2 tests were compared with those measured in situ. Moreover, breakthrough curve (BTC) analysis displayed an accentuated tailing along the investigated natural conduits due to the presence of dispersive singularities which possibly enable aerosol deposition. The long tailing observed in Milandre and Longeaigue Caves is probably due to cross-section variations. A 1-D advection-dispersion model tested for these sites was unable to fit BTC tailing in natural conduits. In Baulmes artificial conduit, where long tailing is not observed, the dispersion coefficient has been estimated using Chatwin’s method, and compared with the prediction of Taylor’s theory. Despite the regular geometry of Baulmes Mine, Taylor’s correlation significantly underestimates the dispersion coefficient deduced from field data, showing the need for more theoretical work on turbulent dispersion in mines. This paper gives a first insight into air motion and matter dispersion along ventilated karst conduits, preparing for proper aerosol dispersion modelling.

Determination of the influence of particle spatial distribution and interface heterogeneity on tensile fracture of ordinary refractory ceramics by applying discrete element modelling

AbstractThe microstructures and local characteristics of ordinary refractory ceramics are heterogeneous. The discrete element (DE) method was used to consider the variation in particle spatial distributions and statistically distributed interface properties (uniform, Weibull) between elements. In addition, three Weibull distributions with different shape parameters were evaluated. A uniaxial tensile test was used to study the effects of particle spatial distributions and interface property distributions on the stress–strain curve, tensile strength, and crack propagation. The results of the test show that the particle spatial distribution significantly influences crack propagation and fracture patterns, and the interface condition plays an important role in mechanical responses, crack propagation, and fracture mechanisms and patterns. The discrete element modelling of uniaxial tensile and compressive tests shows that brittle materials exhibit asymmetric mechanical responses to compression and tension loading including static Young’s modulus.

Comparative evaluation of electrical resistance tomography, positron emission particle tracking and high-speed imaging for analysing horizontal particle-liquid flow in a pipe

We evaluate three experimental techniques - electrical resistance tomography (ERT), positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) and high-speed imaging (HSI) – for analysing the local particle velocity field and spatial distribution in a horizontal particle-liquid pipe flow under varying conditions of solid concentration. A new ERT methodology is devised for estimating particle velocity, circumventing the limitations of the conventional cross-correlation technique. Furthermore, an enhanced HSI approach is introduced and systematically compared with PEPT and ERT. Results show that, under all conditions, PEPT provides the most accurate particle velocity field followed by HSI, whilst ERT yields the most accurate concentration field, followed by HSI. The enhanced HSI emerges as a simple cost-effective option compared to PEPT and ERT. A combined measurement approach using PEPT for local particle velocity and ERT for local concentration, however, delivers the best comprehensive two-phase flow characterization, highlighting potential synergies between these methods for complex flow studies.

Strength-ductility synergy in a novel carbon nanotube-high entropy alloy co-reinforced aluminum matrix composite

Here we present a novel design strategy for the manufacturing carbon nanotube (CNT)-high entropy alloy (HEA) particles co-reinforced aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) with heterogeneous structures. This strategy involves in situ synthesis of CNTs@HEA hybrid reinforcement. The results demonstrate that the fabricated CNTs@HEA/Al composites have bimodal grain structure and nano-reinforced particle spatial distribution. The dispersion of CNTs within the Al matrix was achieved via the transport of micron-sized HEA particles. Simultaneously, the formation of Al4C3 and Cr7C3 occurred at the HEA/CNTs/Al interface, thereby augmenting the load-bearing capacity of CNTs. The enhanced strength of CNTs@HEA/Al composites is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of load transfer, back stress strengthening, Orowan strengthening, grain refinements and stacking faults (SFs) strengthening. Moreover, the bimodal grains and SFs of the composite contribute sustained strain hardening, resulting in satisfactory tensile ductility.

Spectral characteristics of particle preferential concentration in turbulence computed by Eulerian and Lagrangian methods

This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the Fourier spectra characteristics of particle preferential concentration in turbulent flows obtained by Eulerian and Lagrangian modelling approaches for different Stokes numbers. Particle preferential concentration is characterized by clusters and voids in the spatial particle distributions formed in turbulent flows and can significantly influence processes such as droplet coalescence, evaporation, and gas-particle reactions. The research primarily focuses on comparing the performance of two Eulerian models—one with and one without second-order velocity moments—and one Lagrangian model, which are used to predict particle dispersion. Key findings include the impact of artificial diffusion in Eulerian methods, the superiority of methods incorporating second-order velocity moments contributions at higher Stokes numbers, and the sensitivity of the Lagrangian method to Poisson statistics. Notably, the study reveals minimal variation in mean velocity spectra across different Stokes numbers, as opposed to the marked variations in particle concentration, momentum, and energy spectra. Grid resolution emerges as a crucial factor in enhancing spectral energy predictions in Eulerian methods. The research underscores the nuanced distinctions between Eulerian and Lagrangian methods in modelling preferential concentration, providing a detailed spectral comparison of particle concentration, velocity, momentum, and energy, highlighting the importance of method selection based on specific modelling needs.

Bridging New Observational Capabilities and Process-Level Simulation: Insights into Aerosol Roles in the Earth System

Abstract The spatial distribution of ambient aerosol particles significantly impacts aerosol–radiation–cloud interactions, which contribute to the largest uncertainty in global anthropogenic radiative forcing estimations. However, the atmospheric boundary layer and lower free troposphere have not been adequately sampled in terms of spatiotemporal resolution, hindering a comprehensive characterization of various atmospheric processes and impeding our understanding of the Earth system. To address this research data gap, we have leveraged the development of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) and advanced measurement techniques to obtain mesoscale spatial data on aerosol microphysical and optical properties around the U.S. Southern Great Plains (SGP) atmospheric observatory. Our study also benefits from state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that include three-dimensional molecular imaging techniques enabled by secondary ion mass spectrometry and nanogram-level chemical composition analysis via micronebulization aerosol mass spectrometry. Through our study, we have developed a framework for observation–modeling integration, enabling an examination of how various assumptions about the organic–inorganic components mixing state, inferred from chemical analysis, affect clouds and radiation in observation-constrained model simulations. By integrating observational constraints (derived from offline chemical analysis of the aerosol surface using collected samples) with in situ UAS observations, we have identified a prominent role of organic-enriched nanometer layers located at the surface of aerosol particles in determining profiles of aerosol optical and hygroscopic properties over the SGP observatory. Furthermore, we have improved the agreement between predicted clouds and ground-based cloud lidar measurements. This UAS–model–laboratory integration exemplifies how these new advanced capabilities can significantly enhance our understanding of aerosol–radiation–cloud interactions.

Research on enhancement of screening performance of a novel drum screen based on the Discrete Element Method simulation

Screening is one of the most basic technologies for size classification of granular materials. Based on discrete element method simulations, a new built-in component was developed to address the problems of particle piling and poor segregation in drum screening process, and the particle dynamics and spatial distribution were carefully investigated. The results showed that, increasing the blade length will enhance the particle spreading, and a gap between the rotating blade end and the screen wall can lead to proper size segregation; Built-in slits can act as a ‘secondary screen’ by changing the volume ratio of large and small particles, and the curved-end blades can not only push the particles forward but also exert pressure on the ones underneath them; The screening efficiency changes non-linearly with the change in baffles' height; Contrastively, the screening efficiency of the optimized built-in component drum screen is significantly increased up to 82.34%.
