The Spanish toxic oil syndrome (TOS) caused a unique illness, including acute respiratory effects, eosinophilia, and muscle wasting, in 20 000 people in 1981; epidemiological evidence linked the disease with the consumption of rapeseed oils that had been denatured with aniline. In the study reported here, rapeseed oils were adulterated with aniline and processed to simulate the oils involved in TOS. The aniline-adulterated oils were investigated using radiotracer techniques, advanced sample preparation techniques, including preparative HPLC, and in uitro cell culture toxicity tests. HPLC and GC-MS analysis of the aniline-adulterated oils showed a profile similar to that of «case-related» oils (implicated in TOS), particularly with respect to the anilide contents
