The usefulness of accounting information for decision-making purposes in an Italian company from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century

Introduction: Accounting history research on cost accounting theory and practice is still at an early stage in Italy for two main reasons. The first relates to the im-portance that the double-entry bookkeeping technique assumes in Italy, charac-terised by a typical financial focus, and the second to the delay with which Italy en-tered the industrialisation process. Aim: The main aim of this study is to investigate the bookkeeping accounting sys-tems of an established, southern Italian family and long-lived firm, namely Amarelli, still operating in the liquorice industry, from the late nineteenth to the early twen-tieth century to unveil whether accounting information was used by Amarelli man-agers for control and decision-making purposes. Methodological approach: We used document analysis of the reports related to the Amarelli bookkeeping system and semi-structured interviews with one of the present-day owners. Main findings: The findings highlight that the different reports in which Amarelli's bookkeeping system was articulated, and specifically the reports related to Ama-relli's industrial activity, can be regarded as a response to the necessity to calcu-late and control the ‘cost' of the different ‘processes' as well as the specific ‘per-formance' of any single activity of Amarelli, together with the overall ‘perfor-mance' of the Amarelli factory. Originality: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the accounting systems used by a food industry firm in southern Italy, an under-developed territorial area, from an industrialised point of view during 1875-1925.

Understanding organisational metaphors to make sense of values and of obligation

The paper focuses on organisational culture and values in small family businesses during intergenerational succession. Specifically, it analyses what metaphors characterise the organisational culture of the family firms and what values draw from this culture are taken forward during intergenerational succession. Following a multiple case study approach, the paper investigates a set of southern Italian family firms and the respective actors' understanding and interpretations of metaphors and values at the time of intergenerational succession. Findings highlight actors' predisposition to feel a strong sense of obligation shaping organisational life and suggest that processes of intergenerational succession might follow patterns situated within the boundaries of traditionally defined visions of family and society.

A novel SLC1A4 homozygous mutation causing congenital microcephaly, epileptic encephalopathy and spastic tetraparesis: a video-EEG and tractography – case study

Biallelic mutations in the SLC1A4 gene have been identified as a very rare cause of neurodevelopmental disorders. l-serine transport deficiency has been regarded as the causal molecular mechanism underlying the neurological phenotype of SLC1A4 mutation patients. To date this genetic condition has been reported almost exclusively in a limited number of Ashkenazi-Jewish individuals and as a result the SLC1A4 gene is not routinely included in the majority of the genetic diagnostic panels for neurological diseases. We hereby report a 7-year-old boy from a Southern Italian family, presenting with epileptic encephalopathy, congenital microcephaly, global developmental delay, severe hypotonia, spasticity predominant at the lower limbs, and thin corpus callosum. Whole exome sequencing identified a novel segregating SLC1A4 gene homozygous mutation (c.1141G > A: p.Gly381Arg) as the likely cause of the disease in our family. In order to deeply characterize the electro-clinical and neurological phenotype in our index patient, long-term systematic video-electroencephalograms (EEG) as well as repeated brain imaging studies (which included tractographic reconstructions) were performed on a regular basis during a 7 years follow-up time.In conclusion, we suggest to carefully considering SLC1A4 biallelic mutations in individuals presenting an early onset severe neurodevelopmental disorder with variable spasticity and seizures, regardless the patients’ ethnic background.

Autosomal recessive progressive myoclonus epilepsy with ataxia and mental retardation

We describe two couples of sibs from a southern Italian family affected by epilepsy, myoclonus, mental retardation and slight ataxia. Onset was between 4 and 12 years and the course slowly progressive. The clinical picture suggested the diagnosis of Unverricht-Lundborg disease. Molecular study excluded linkage to EPM1. Other possible causes of progressive myoclonus epilepsy were also excluded.

Social exchange, reciprocity and amoral familism: Aspects of Italian chain migration to Australia

This paper examines new evidence on Italian chain migration to Australia. General theories stressing social and cultural differences between Northern and Southern Italians are challenged. The argument is in two parts. The first involves a critique of the idea of Southern Italian amoral familism, based on evidence of convergence between Northern and Southern patterns of chain migration and settlement. This finding is corrosive both of Banfield's work on Southern Italian family structure, and Putnam's more recent representation of Southerners as inescapably locked into cultural structures that militate against mutual aid and trust. In the second part of the argument an attempt is made to locate patterns of social exchange evident in the chain migration process. Models of reciprocity are rejected in favour of notions of sponsorship as a non-reciprocal gift among family, friends and paesani.

Interaction of rare illegitimate recombination event and a poly A addition site mutation resulting in a severe form of alpha thalassemia

The clinical diversity of thalassemia depends on interaction of diverse genetic defects. We have characterized a severe form of alpha thalassemia caused by coinheritance of a rare alpha-globin gene deletion and a nondeletional defect in a southern Italian family. The proband, a 7-year-old girl, exhibited an abnormal hemoglobin electrophoresis pattern with hemoglobin H and hemoglobin Barts, indicating inheritance of H and hemoglobin Barts, indicating inheritance of a severe form of alpha thalassemia. Southern blot analysis of DNA showed normal as well as aberrant alpha-globin gene fragments indicating heterozygosity for a deletional form of alpha thalassemia in the proband and her mother. The coinheritance of a nondeletional form of alpha thalassemia (alpha alpha T) was suspected because of the severity of the proband's phenotype and the presence of normal alpha-globin gene fragments in the father. Selective polymerase chain reaction of the paternal alpha 1- and alpha 2-globin genes in the proband followed by DNA sequence analysis showed an AATAAA to AATGAA mutation in the polyadenylation signal sequence of the alpha 2-globin gene. Genomic DNA mapping and sequence analysis of a unique polymerase chain reaction product generated across the deletion breakpoint of the maternal allele showed a 5,201-bp deletion extending from 870 nucleotides 5′ of the alpha 2-globin gene to nucleotide +519 in the alpha 1-globin gene. This deletion is similar to that previously suggested by blotting studies in a Greek family (Pressley et al, Nucleic Acids Res 8:4889, 1980) and removes the entire alpha 2-globin gene and a portion of the 5′ end of the alpha 1-globin gene. Sequence characterization of the resultant aberrant truncated alpha 1-globin gene from the proband showed a 27 nucleotide duplication corresponding to the 3′ end of the alpha-globin gene IVS-2 region separated by the insertion of a tetranucleotide (GGTT), suggesting that this deletion is caused by an illegitimate recombination event.

A G→C change at the donor splice site of intron 1 causes lipoprotein lipase deficiency in a Southern-Italian family

We describe a new case of lipoprotein lipase deficiency in a proband from a Southern-Italian family. Enzyme activity and mass were absent. Amplification and sequencing of individual exons, intron boundaries and the regulatory region revealed only one homozygous G→C transversion at the first nucleotide of intron 1. The single strand conformation polymorphism analysis proved to be a helpful tool for the identification of the single base mutation. Northern hybridization failed to reaveal the presence of mature lipoprotein lipase mRNA. The mutation, which destroys the conserved dinucleotide at the junction site of intron 1, causes defective mRNA splicing and it is responsible for the deficiency.

Mitochondrial DNA mutation in an Italian family with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy

Mitochondrial (mt) DNA from a Southern Italian family with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy was analyzed for the presence of the reported mutation at position 11778 of the ND4 subunit gene. The point mutation was found in mt DNA extracted from peripheral blood in all members of the family with the exclusion of the father, and was present in a homoplasmic fashion, despite the phenotypic heterogeneity of disease presentation among family members.

The Southern Italian family in the early modern period: a discussion of co-residential patterns

La famille en Italie méridionale à l'époque moderne est généralement considérée par les historiens comme nombreuse, complexe et caractérisée par une série de tendances et de valeur dites ‘méditerranéennes’. Les études récentes fournissent cependant la preuve qu'il y a une grande diversité dans la composition des ménages, avec une prédominance de families nucléaires dans certaines régions et une présence du principe néo-local de la formation des familles fortement implantée. Une analyse de la relation entre la composition des ménages et les variables démographiques telles que l'âge au manage démontre qu'il n'existe pas de méthode typologique adéquate pour l'étude des systèmes familiaux en Italie méridionale. Cela démontre également la nécessité d'une analyse comparative des formes de coresidence, ce qui pourrait d'ailleurs remettre en question tout le concept du système de formation des ménages. De plus, l'analyse suggère que les historiens devraient tenir compte de toute la gamme des facteurs écologiques, socioeconomiques et juridiques qui ont une influence sur la composition des ménages, plutôt que de partir du postulat des liens fonctionnels ou des modèles culturels: l'etude des formes de ménages ne peut pas se passer de celle de la famille ou de la parenté.

The South Italian Family Revisited

Piecing together evidence from the historian, the archivist, the political scientist, and the ethnographer, Dr. Moss, in the C.S.A.S. Distinguished Lecture, describes the changing southern Italian family. In this brief essay he describes the traditional family as one adapted to a medieval feudal society that must now face the task of adjusting to an urban and industrialized society. The question of the survival of the unit is left unaswered but the reader is left with a real understanding of the dynamics of family life in South Italy; both yesterday and today.

HAEMOGLOBIN CASERTA: AN ABNORMAL HAEMOGLOBIN OBSERVED IN A SOUTHERN ITALIAN FAMILY.

An abnormal haemoglobin, observed in a southern Italian family, is described. The electrophoretic and chromatographic behaviour of this haemoglobin is reported. This haemoglobin appears to differ from previously described abnormal haemoglobins and it has thus been named haemoglobin Caserta. The average amount of haemoglobin Caserta present in heterozygotes is 12 per cent. The fingerprinting analysis of haemoglobin Caserta has revealed an alteration, which has tentatively been localized in the “core” region of the β peptide chain.

Interaction of Hemoglobin Lepore with Sickle Cell Trait and Microcythemia (Thalassemia) in a Southern Italian Family

Abstract An abnormal hemoglobin has been observed in a southern Italian family together with sickle cell hemoglobin and thalassemia (microcythemia). The hematologic study has shown that all the carriers of the abnormal hemoglobin are microcythemic. The hemoglobins of these individuals have been studied by paper, starch gel, starch block and agar gel electrophoresis. The abnormal hemoglobin has been isolated and identified by fingerprinting as Hb LeporeBoston. The combination of Hb LeporeBoston with thalassemia and sickle cell trait has been observed in members of this family. The hematologic and biochemical implications of the Hb Lepore/thalassemia disease are discussed.
