Fine and ultrafine particle emission factors and new diagnostic ratios of PAHs for peat swamp forest fires

Peatland fires are one of the major global sources of atmospheric particles. Emission factors for fine (PM1 and PM2.5) and ultrafine (PM0.1) particles and particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from plants in the peat swamp forest (PSF), including Melaleuca cajuputi leaves, M. cajuputi branches, M. cajuputi bark, Lepironia articulata (Retz.) Domin, forest leaf litter and peat were measured in a laboratory combustion chamber. From these measurements, new PAH diagnostic ratios for fine and ultrafine particles were proposed for identifying the forest burning source. The new emission factors for PM were PM0.1: 0.03–0.33, PM1: 0.69–2.11 and PM2.5: 1.12–4.18 g/kg; for PM-bound PAHs, the factors were PM0.1: 5.7–166.0, PM1: 31.5–1338.9 and PM2.5: 36.3–3641.1 μg/kg. The predominant PAHs for PSF burning were Pyr, BbF, DBA (in PM0.1), Flu, DBA, BghiPe (in PM1), and BbF, DBA and BghiPe (in PM2.5). We also presented new diagnostic ratios for PSF burning, including BaP/(BaP + Chr): 0.39–0.75, BaP/(BaP + BbF): 0.21–0.47 and BaA/(BaA + Chr): 0.36–0.53. Moreover, the physical and chemical characteristics of ambient fine and ultrafine particles in the Kuan Kreng forest during the 2019 forest fire (FF) and 2021 non-forest fire (NFF) periods were investigated. The mean PM0.1, PM1 and PM2.5 concentrations during the FF period were approximately 3.5–4.4 times as high as those during the 2021 NFF period. New PAH diagnostic ratios of BaP/(BaP + BbF) versus BaP/(BaP + Chr) were able to identify PAH burning sources in PM1 and PM2.5 but were less clear for PM0.1, which was dominated by a single source – M. cajuputi. Chemical mass balance studies identified peat forest burning emissions as the main source of fine and ultrafine particles during the FF period. This study suggests that the new PAH diagnostic ratios can be used to identify the burning source for more precise source apportionment.

Source identification and apportionment of ambient particulate matter in Beijing using an advanced computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) system

The use of electron microscopy to analyze the morphology, composition, and sources of atmospheric particles has been studied extensively worldwide. However, in China, there are few studies on single-particle source analysis based on computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM) technology for a large number of particles, and the related technical methods need to be established and improved. In this study, ambient particulate matter (PM) was collected simultaneously from urban, suburban, and background areas of Beijing in spring 2018 and subsequently characterized using the IntelliSEM-EPAS™ technology (an advanced CCSEM software). The deposition velocity model was used to deduce the size distribution and calculate the concentration of ambient PM. Based on the k-means algorithm and empirical rules, all particles investigated were quantitatively apportioned to nine major sources, including soil/road dust, carbonates-silicates, carbonates, irregular carbonaceous particles, irregular iron oxides, combustion/industry, calcium sulfate, secondary particles, and salt-related particles. The size-resolved contributions (mass and number) of different sources were calculated. For example, soil/road dust (65.1 %), carbonate-silicate (16.1 %), and carbonate (7.1 %) were the top three sources contributing to PM10 mass. This study was the first localized application of IntelliSEM-EPAS technology in China, demonstrating its great promise in PM source apportionment. For further accurate and refined source apportionment, it is essential to build localized individual particle source profiles.

Airborne Prokaryotic, Fungal and Eukaryotic Communities of an Urban Environment in the UK

Bioaerosols often contain human pathogens and allergens affecting public health. However, relatively little attention has been given to bioaerosols compared with non-biological aerosols. In this study, we aimed to identify bioaerosol compositions in Manchester, UK by applying high throughput sequencing methods and to find potential sources. Samples were collected at Manchester Air Quality Super Site at the Firs Environmental Research Station in November 2019 and in February 2020. Total DNA has been extracted and sequenced targeting the 16S rRNA gene of prokaryotes, ITS region of fungal DNA and 18S rRNA gene of eukaryotes. We found marine environment-associated bacteria and archaea were relatively more abundant in the February 2020 samples compared with the November 2019 samples, consistent with the North West marine origin based on wind back-trajectory analysis. In contrast, an OTU belonging to Methylobacterium, which includes many species resistant to heavy metals, was relatively more abundant in November 2019 when there were higher metal concentrations. Fungal taxa that fruit all year were relatively more abundant in the February 2020 samples while autumn fruiting species generally had higher relative abundance in the November 2019 samples. There were higher relative abundances of land plants and algae in the February 2020 samples based on 18S rRNA gene sequencing. One of the OTUs belonging to the coniferous yew genus Taxus was more abundant in the February 2020 samples agreeing with the usual pollen season of yews in the UK which is from mid-January until late April. The result from this study suggests a potential application of bioaerosol profiling for tracing the source of atmospheric particles.

A local marine source of atmospheric particles in the High Arctic

The chemical composition of non-refractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) was characterized at the Villum Research Station (Villum) at Station Nord in North Greenland during spring-summer 2016 using a Time of Flight Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ToF-ACSM). The composition is dominated by sulfate (48%) and organic species (40%). Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) identified three key factors corresponding to a primary hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA), and two types of secondary organic aerosol: oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA) and a marine organic aerosol (MOA). The HOA factor accounts for 5% of the organic aerosol mass, which is consistent with previous findings at Villum. The OOA factor accounts for 77% of the organic aerosol mass and correlates with accumulation mode particles, which supports previous findings indicating that oxidized organic aerosols are predominantly from long-range transport during winter and spring at Villum. The MOA factor was characterized by mass spectral fragments of methane sulfonic acid (MSA) from atmospheric oxidation of dimethyl sulfide, for which reason the MOA factor is considered to be of biogenic origin. MOA accounts for 18% of the organic aerosol mass and correlates with locally produced Aitken mode particles. This indicates that biogenic processes are not only a significant source of aerosols at Villum, but MOA also appears to be formed in the vicinity of the measurement site. This local geographical origin was confirmed through air mass back trajectory modelling and source-receptor analysis. During May, air masses frequently arrived from the east, with source regions for the MOA factor and therewith MSA located in the Barents Sea and Lincoln Sea with lesser contributions from the Greenland Sea. During June, air mass origin shifted to the west, with source regions for the MOA factor and MSA shifting correspondingly to Baffin Bay and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. While shifting transport patterns between May and June lead to shifting source regions, sea ice likely played a role as well. During May, marginal ice zones were present in the Barents Sea between Svalbard and Franz Josef Land, while during June, sea ice in the northern part of Baffin Bay retreated and sea ice in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago decreased. Although May and June experienced different transport patterns and sea ice conditions, levels of the MOA factor and MSA were similar between the months. This is likely due to similarities between marine biological activities in the Barents Sea and Baffin Bay. This research highlights the complex relationship between transport patterns, sea ice conditions, and atmospheric particle concentrations. Multiyear aerosol chemical composition from several High Arctic sites is encouraged to determine the full effects of ocean-atmosphere interactions and transport patterns on atmospheric aerosol concentrations.

Atmospheric Aerosols: Some Highlights and Highlighters, Past to Recent Years

The severe harmful impact of atmospheric aerosols over the environment leads to create the diverse human interests and concerns. Various progressive steps were taken by researchers and scientists to understand the fundamentals, such as nucleation and growth mechanisms, formalization of particle dynamics, characterization of the mechanisms for the particle-size dispensation, detection of chemical processes for atmospheric particle sources. The increase in population growth and different manmade activities have led to change in the environmental conditions causes to pollute the distinct vicinities. Different changes in the environment such as land use pattern, increased concentration of various greenhouse gases, and Industrial pollutants change the energy balance in our climatic conditions and affect the radiation budget of earth’ atmosphere. Such changes in climate and polluted environment leads to many health-related ailments to mankind. The present study outlines the recent research perspectives of atmospheric aerosols, their estimation through different modes, effects, and an overview of the current situations that need to be addressed before they become completely incorporated.

Source apportionment of atmospheric particle number concentrations with wide size range by nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF)

Quantifying the sources of atmospheric particles is essential to air quality control but remains challenging, especially for the source apportionment of particles based on number concentration with wide size range. Here, particle number concentrations (PNC) with size range 19–20,000 nm involving four modes Nucleation, Aitken, Accumulation, and Coarse are used to do source apportionment of PNC at the Guangdong Atmospheric Supersite (Heshan) during July–October 2015 by nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) with 6 factors. For July 2015, separated source apportionments for three different size ranges from collocated instruments nano scanning mobility particle sizer (NSMPS), SMPS, and aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) and for two different size ranges (below and above 100 nm) show similar quantitative source information with that for the one whole size range. The mean absolute difference of contribution percentages of total particle number concentrations (TPNC) based on 5 unique apportioned sources is 5.6 % (4.3–7.6 %) for the instrument segregated apportionment and 4.2 % (0–5.3 %) for the size range segregated apportionment respectively, relative to the one whole apportionment. Moreover, the contribution percentages of TPNC are close to the weighted sum of contribution percentages of all size bins, with a mean absolute difference of 1.1 % (0–3.4 %). In both these two aspects, the consistency among different technical paths proves the matrix factorization by NMF is practically desirable and the simplicity of reducing some steps or calculations saves time. Besides, dust can be identified with the wide size range including larger than 3000 nm. Six apportioned sources in the 4 months are Accumulation (32.4 %), Nucleation (20.0 %), Aitken (15.2 %), traffic (14.6 %), dust (10.6 %), and Coarse (7.1 %). Therefore, NMF would serve as a promising tool for PNC source apportionment with wide size range and conducting the apportionment with the whole size range in one matrix factorization procedure and using the single TPNC contribution percentage are feasible.

Biomass Burning is an Important Source of Organic Aerosols in Interior Alaska

AbstractBiomass burning (BB) affects air quality, the global cycling of carbon, climate, and human health. Intensive BB activities occur throughout the year due to wildfires and domestic wood burning in Fairbanks. We collected total suspended particle samples from the air in Fairbanks from June 2008 to June 2009. Here, we report seasonal variations in the molecular composition of organic aerosols and its BB contributions in Fairbanks. Levoglucosan is the dominant BB tracer (annual mean 67 ± 77 ng m−3), showing a winter maximum (145 ± 47 ng m−3) and spring minimum (12 ± 12 ng m−3). Levoglucosan showed significant correlations (p < 0.001) with organic carbon (OC), water‐soluble organic carbon (WSOC), and PM2.5, indicating a significant contribution of BB to hazes in Fairbanks. However, no correlation exists between levoglucosan and non‐sea salt potassium (nss‐K+), which has been proposed as a BB tracer. We hypothesize that nss‐K+ is removed by deposition on the inner surfaces of woodstove chimneys. Levoglucosan contributes 3.6% to OC and 6.3% to WSOC in winter, indicating that BB significantly affects carbonaceous aerosols in central Alaska. Moreover, positive matrix factorization analysis demonstrates that BB is an important source (47.5%) of Fairbanks year‐round aerosols. We conclude that domestic wood burning is an important source of atmospheric particles that impact the air quality of Fairbanks, especially in winter. We presumed that Fairbanks BB products might be transported to the remote Arctic, potentially affecting the chemical composition of Arctic aerosols. These findings will be useful to better understand the seasonal influence of BB on the Arctic and subarctic aerosols.

Bioaerosol Contribution to Atmospheric Particulate Matter in Indoor University Environments

Within the framework of the project “Integrated Evaluation of Indoor Particulate Exposure”, we carried out a 4-week field study to determine indoor bioaerosol, and its contribution to particulate matter (PM)10 and organic matter. The study was carried out in university classrooms, where most of the common indoor sources of atmospheric particles are missing. Bioaerosol was determined by a method based on propidium iodide staining, observation by fluorescence microscopy, and image analysis. Indoor bioaerosol concentrations were compared with outdoor values, which were determined simultaneously. The samplings periods were scheduled to divide weekday hours, when the students were inside, from night-time hours and weekends. Very high bioaerosol concentrations were detected inside the classrooms with respect to outdoor values. The mean difference was 49 μg/m3 when the students were inside, 5.4 μg/m3 during the night, and it became negative during the weekends. Indoor-to-outdoor ratios were 6.0, 4.2, and 0.7, respectively. Bioaerosol contributed 26% to organics and 10% to PM10. In indoor samples collected during the day, the microscope images showed numerous skin fragments, which were mostly responsible for the increase in the bioaerosol mass. People’s presence proved to be responsible for a significant increase in bioaerosol concentration in crowded indoor environments.

Biomass combustion produces ice-active minerals in biomass-burning aerosol and bottom ash

Ice nucleation and the resulting cloud glaciation are significant atmospheric processes that affect the evolution of clouds and their properties including radiative forcing and precipitation, yet the sources and properties of atmospheric ice nucleants are poorly constrained. Heterogeneous ice nucleation caused by ice-nucleating particles (INPs) enables cloud glaciation at temperatures above the homogeneous freezing regime that starts near -35 °C. Biomass burning is a significant global source of atmospheric particles and a highly variable and poorly understood source of INPs. The nature of these INPs and how they relate to the fuel composition and its combustion are critical gaps in our understanding of the effects of biomass burning on the environment and climate. Here we show that the combustion process transforms inorganic elements naturally present in the biomass (not soil or dust) to form potentially ice-active minerals in both the bottom ash and emitted aerosol particles. These particles possess ice-nucleation activities high enough to be relevant to mixed-phase clouds and are active over a wide temperature range, nucleating ice at up to -13 °C. Certain inorganic elements can thus serve as indicators to predict the production of ice nucleants from the fuel. Combustion-derived minerals are an important but understudied source of INPs in natural biomass-burning aerosol emissions in addition to lofted primary soil and dust particles. These discoveries and insights should advance the realistic incorporation of biomass-burning INPs into atmospheric cloud and climate models. These mineral components produced in biomass-burning aerosol should also be studied in relation to other atmospheric chemistry processes, such as facilitating multiphase chemical reactions and nutrient availability.

Multi-city comparative PM2.5 source apportionment for fifteen sites in Europe: The ICARUS project

PM2.5 is an air pollution metric widely used to assess air quality, with the European Union having set targets for reduction in PM2.5 levels and population exposure. A major challenge for the scientific community is to identify, quantify and characterize the sources of atmospheric particles in the aspect of proposing effective control strategies. In the frame of ICARUS EU2020 project, a comprehensive database including PM2.5 concentration and chemical composition (ions, metals, organic/elemental carbon, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) from three sites (traffic, urban background, rural) of five European cities (Athens, Brno, Ljubljana, Madrid, Thessaloniki) was created. The common and synchronous sampling (two seasons involved) and analysis procedure offered the prospect of a harmonized Positive Matrix Factorization model approach, with the scope of identifying the similarities and differences of PM2.5 key-source chemical fingerprints across the sampling sites. The results indicated that the average contribution of traffic exhausts to PM2.5 concentration was 23.3% (traffic sites), 13.3% (urban background sites) and 8.8% (rural sites). The average contribution of traffic non-exhausts was 12.6% (traffic), 13.5% (urban background) and 6.1% (rural sites). The contribution of fuel oil combustion was 3.8% at traffic, 11.6% at urban background and 18.7% at rural sites. Biomass burning contribution was 22% at traffic sites, 30% at urban background sites and 28% at rural sites. Regarding soil dust, the average contribution was 5% and 8% at traffic and urban background sites respectively and 16% at rural sites. Sea salt contribution was low (1–4%) while secondary aerosols corresponded to the 16–34% of PM2.5. The homogeneity of the chemical profiles as well as their relationship with prevailing meteorological parameters were investigated. The results showed that fuel oil combustion, traffic non-exhausts and soil dust profiles are considered as dissimilar while biomass burning, sea salt and traffic exhaust can be characterized as relatively homogenous among the sites.

Pollution sources of atmospheric fine particles and secondary aerosol characteristics in Beijing

To investigate the secondary formation and pollution sources of atmospheric particles in urban Beijing, PM2.5 and its chemical components were collected and determined by URG-9000D ambient ion monitor (AIM) from March 2016 to January 2017. Among water-soluble ions (WSIs), NO3−, SO42- and NH4+ (SNA) had the largest proportion (77.8%) with the total concentration of 23.8 μg/m3. Moreover, as fine particle pollution worsened, the NO3−, SO42- and NH4+ concentrations increased basically, which revealed that secondary aerosols were the main cause of particle pollution in Beijing. Furthermore, the particle neutralization ratio (1.1), the ammonia to sulfate molar ratio (3.4) and the nitrate to sulfate molar ratio (2.2) showed that secondary aerosols are under ammonium-rich conditions with the main chemical forms of NH4NO3 and (NH4)2SO4, and vehicle emission could be the main anthropogenic source of secondary aerosols in Beijing. Source analysis further indicated that secondary aerosols, solid fuel combustion, dust and marine aerosol were the principal pollution sources of PM2.5, accounting for about 46.1%, 22.4% and 13.0%, respectively, and Inner Mongolia and Hebei Provinces could be considered as the main potential sources of PM2.5 in urban Beijing. In addition, secondary formation process was closely related with gaseous precursor emission amounts (SO2, NO2, NH3 and HONO), atmospheric ozone concentration (O3), meteorological conditions (temperature and relative humidity) and particle components. Sensitive analysis of the thermodynamic equilibrium model (ISORROPIA II) revealed that controlling total nitrate (TN) is the effective measure to mitigate fine particle pollution in Beijing.

Impacts of Biomass Burning Emission Inventories and Atmospheric Reanalyses on Simulated PM10 over Indochina

Biomass burning (BB) is a major source of atmospheric particles over Indochina during the dry season. Moreover, Indochina has convoluted meteorological scales, and regional meteorological conditions dominate the transport patterns of pollutants. This study focused on the impacts of BB emission inventories and atmospheric reanalyses on simulated PM10 over Indochina in 2014 using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. Meteorological fields to input to CMAQ were produced by using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulation with the United States National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final (NCEP FNL) Operational Global Analysis or European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts Interim Reanalysis (ERA-interim). The Fire INventory from NCAR (FINN) v1.5 or the Global Fire Emissions Database including small fires (GFED v4.1s) was selected for BB emissions for the air quality simulation. The simulation case with NCEP FNL and FINN v1.5 (FNL + FINN) performed best throughout 2014, including the season when BB activities were intensified. The normalized percentage difference for maximum daily mean PM10 concentrations at Chiang Mai for FNL + FINN and the two simulation cases applying GFED v4.1s for BB emissions (−53% to −27%) was much larger than that between the FNL + FINN and ERA + FINN cases (10%). BB emission inventories more strongly impacted PM10 simulation than atmospheric reanalyses in highly polluted areas by BB over Indochina in 2014.

A New Geochemical Method for Determining the Sources of Atmospheric Particles: A Case Study from Gannan, Northeast China

The geochemical characteristics of atmospheric deposition can help trace the origin and assess the impacts of pollutants. Northeast China has always been a region seriously affected by sandstorms. This study aims to explain the potential source of sandstorms in Gannan County, Heilongjiang Provence, by collecting dust and analyzing geochemistry in one year where there is no significant industrial or anthropogenic pollution. Input fluxes of deposition show that Zn and Mn were more prevalent (36.7 g·hm−2·a−1 and 77.93 g·hm−2·a−1, respectively) than other elements. The geochemical composition of atmospheric deposition samples from 17 collection points in Gannan County were determined with regard to 20 elements including nine heavy metals, two metalloids, three nonmetallic elements, a transition metal, and five other major elements. The discriminate function (DF) and chemical index of alteration (CIA) indices indicate that Gannan County (agricultural production area) and Harbin (densely inhabited district) have similar geochemical characteristics of dry deposition. The integration of Na/Al and Ca/Mg ratios with an air mass back-trajectories model shows effects from Russian dust sources (36.6%) and from the northwest desert of China (13.3%). The results will assist in developing strategies for reducing dry deposition pollution inputs to agricultural soils in the area and will effectively target policies to protect soils from long-term contaminant accumulation.

Biogenic and anthropogenic sources of aerosols at the High Arctic site Villum Research Station

Abstract. There are limited measurements of the chemical composition, abundance and sources of atmospheric particles in the High Arctic To address this, we report 93 d of soot particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SP-AMS) data collected from 20 February to 23 May 2015 at Villum Research Station (VRS) in northern Greenland (81∘36′ N). During this period, we observed the Arctic haze phenomenon with elevated PM1 concentrations ranging from an average of 2.3, 2.3 and 3.3 µg m−3 in February, March and April, respectively, to 1.2 µg m−3 in May. Particulate sulfate (SO42-) accounted for 66 % of the non-refractory PM1 with the highest concentration until the end of April and decreasing in May. The second most abundant species was organic aerosol (OA) (24 %). Both OA and PM1, estimated from the sum of all collected species, showed a marked decrease throughout May in accordance with the polar front moving north, together with changes in aerosol removal processes. The highest refractory black carbon (rBC) concentrations were found in the first month of the campaign, averaging 0.2 µg m−3. In March and April, rBC averaged 0.1 µg m−3 while decreasing to 0.02 µg m−3 in May. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) of the OA mass spectra yielded three factors: (1) a hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA) factor, which was dominated by primary aerosols and accounted for 12 % of OA mass, (2) an Arctic haze organic aerosol (AOA) factor and (3) a more oxygenated marine organic aerosol (MOA) factor. AOA dominated until mid-April (64 %–81 % of OA), while being nearly absent from the end of May and correlated significantly with SO42-, suggesting the main part of that factor is secondary OA. The MOA emerged late at the end of March, where it increased with solar radiation and reduced sea ice extent and dominated OA for the rest of the campaign until the end of May (24 %–74 % of OA), while AOA was nearly absent. The highest O∕C ratio (0.95) and S∕C ratio (0.011) was found for MOA. Our data support the current understanding that Arctic aerosols are highly influenced by secondary aerosol formation and receives an important contribution from marine emissions during Arctic spring in remote High Arctic areas. In view of a changing Arctic climate with changing sea-ice extent, biogenic processes and corresponding source strengths, highly time-resolved data are needed in order to elucidate the components dominating aerosol concentrations and enhance the understanding of the processes taking place.

Impact of urbanization and steel mill emissions on elemental composition of street dust and corresponding particle characterization

Street Dust (SD) acts as a sink and source of atmospheric particles containing Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) and can pose a possible pathway of PTEs to human bodies. Comprehensive SD study, where 249 samples were collected from rural, urban and industrialized areas aimed to increase the understanding between sedimentation of atmospheric dust derived from anthropogenic activities and elemental composition of SD. Elemental composition for 53 elements (ICP-MS, aqua regia digestion) was determined on fraction <0.063 mm. Significantly increased levels of Sn-Cu-Sb-Bi-Ag-Ba-Mo-Pt-Pb and other elements have been detected in urban environments, compared to the rural ones. SEM/EDS investigation identified that main carriers of Ba, Cu and Sn are most likely particles derived from non-exhaust traffic emissions. Areas around steel mills show a strong enrichment with Cr, Mo, Ni and W, which exponentially decreases with the increased distance from the plant, reaching corresponding urban background 15 and 20 km from the source. SEM/EDS inspection identified spherical and melted irregular particles as the main carriers of the above-mentioned elements. City managers shall adapt measures to reduce amount of vehicular traffic and quantity of deposited SD on the public surfaces and encourage green city planning, while industrial emitters are encouraged to reduce their dust emissions.

Size-resolved particle emission factors of vehicular traffic derived from urban eddy covariance measurements

Road traffic is one of the major sources of atmospheric particles in urban areas. Modelling the contribution of this source to urban pollution requires reliable estimates of emission factors possibly resolved in size. In this work, size-resolved particle emission factors (EFs) of the mixed vehicle fleet were measured in the urban area of Lecce (south-eastern Italy). The approach used is based on vertical fluxes measured with eddy-covariance, counting of vehicles, and estimation of footprints. Results show that the average EF in number (range 0.009–3 μm) was 2.2*1014 #/Veh km, being dominated by ultrafine particles (Dp < 0.25 μm) due to exhaust emissions. EF number size distribution decreases with particle size. A reduction of more than four orders of magnitude was observed at Dp ≅ 0.9 μm. EF mass size distribution reaches a maximum around Dp ≅ 0.3 μm then decreases until Dp ≅ 0.9 μm. For larger particles EF in mass increases for the influence of non-exhaust emissions. Average emission factor of PM1 was 56 mg/Veh Km and that of PM2.5 was 63 mg/Veh Km. A comparison of measurements taken in 2010 and 2015 in the same area shows a decreasing trend of the average total EF in number of about 56%, likely as a consequence of the increased use of new generation vehicles following more restrictive limits for particle emissions.

Will wheat be damaged by heavy metals on exposure to coal fly ash?

The mining industry and coal-fired power plants are among the major sources of atmospheric particles that cause air pollution. Can crops be damaged as they are exposed to foliar deposits of particulate matter enriched with various metal(loid)s from coal-mining regions? This study investigated the effects of atmospheric particles on wheat seedlings grown in a region north of Xuzhou, East China, where five coal mines, three coal-fired power plants, two large fly ash yards, and several coal yards coexist. More than two-thirds of the land area of this region is cropland. Atmospheric deposition analysis showed that the daily bulk deposition fluxes of Cr were generally higher in this region than those in other regions worldwide, and the highest fluxes were found in the area between the two-major coal-fired power plants. Wheat was grown under different soil and atmospheric conditions in the coal-fired region (north of Xuzhou) and a non-coal-fired region (south of Xuzhou). Heavy metal analysis showed that the accumulation of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Cr, and As in the cell wall, cell organelles, and soluble fraction of wheat seedling shoots, particularly the percentage in the cell wall, was higher in the coal-fired region than in the non-coal-fired region. Analysis of the changes in the ultrastructure of seedling root and leaf cells revealed that atmospheric particles released in the coal-fired region damages the cellular structure of various parts of the wheat seedling and affects photosynthetic processes by damaging the chloroplasts.

Influential Factors and Dry Deposition of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in Atmospheric Particles at an Isolated Island (Pingtan Island) in Fujian Province, China

To explore the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) pollution characteristics of atmospheric particles, influential factors, and dry deposition fluxes, 28 PCB congeners were examined over a 2-year period in the environment of an isolated island in Fujian Province. In 2006 and 2007, PCB concentrations ranged from 1.12 to 87.32 pg m−3 and ND (not detected) to 44.93 pg m−3, respectively, and were predominantly highly-chlorinated PCBs. The levels were much lower than those from industrial, urban, and rural areas, but slightly higher than those found in coastal areas of Europe and in the ocean. Obvious seasonal variations were found in the PCB levels, with high levels appearing in the winter, whereas low levels appeared in the summer, which indicated a significant positive correlation with the atmospheric particle mass level. The distribution pattern of the PCB concentration was largely affected by the meteorological conditions and total organic carbon (TOC) levels. Moreover, air mass originating from Northern China may be responsible for the higher PCB levels over Pingtan Island during the winter, and tracing the source of atmospheric particles by the stable carbon isotope suggested that the PBC levels may be influenced by coal combustion during the “heating season” of Northern China. The total dry deposition flux of the 28 PCBs on Pingtan Island was 3.94 ng m−2 d−1 and 2.94 ng m−2 d−1 in 2006 and 2007, respectively, and the average yearly input to the adjacent waters was 7531.2 g y−1.

Magnetic, geochemical characterization and health risk assessment of road dust in Xuanwei and Fuyuan, China.

As an accumulation of solid organic and inorganic pollutant particles on outdoor ground surfaces, road dust is an important carrier of heavy metal contaminants and can be a valuable medium for characterizing urban environmental quality. Because the dusts can be an important source of atmospheric particles and take impact on human health, the aim of this study described in detail the mineralogical characteristics, morphology, and heavy metal content of road dust from Xuanwei and Fuyuan, locations with high lung cancer incidence. Our results show that the average concentrations of heavy metals in road dust were higher than their background values. Higher concentrations of heavy metals were found in the magnetic fractions (MFs) than in the non-magnetic fractions (NMFs). Magnetic measurements revealed high magnetic susceptibility values in the road dust samples, and the dominant magnetic carrier was magnetite. The magnetic grains were predominantly pseudo-single domain, multi-domain, and coarse-grained stable single domains (coarse SSD) in size. SEM/XRD analysis identified two groups of magnetic particles: spherules and angular/aggregate particles. Hazard index (HI) values for adults exposure to road dust samples, including MF, Bulk, and NMF, in both areas were lower or close to safe levels, while HI values for childhood exposure to magnetic fractions in both areas were very close or higher than safe levels. Cancer risks from road dust exposure in both areas were in the acceptable value range.
