The effect on true dry matter digestibility of Philippine feedstuffs was studied with different sources of rumen fluid inocula and varying fermentation time in an in vitro sysytem. In one experiment differences in true dry matter digestion in vitro were nil among three sources of rumen fluid inocula (buffalo, cattle-Philippines, cattle-Cornell University). For commonly fed tropical feedstuffs in the other experiment rumen fluid from the cattle at Cornell gave lower digestibilities. True dry matter digestibility in vitro increased for each 24h increase in fermentation periods of 48, 72, and 96h. Differences in digestibility between cattle and buffalo in metabolism studies (in vivo) cannot be explained by differences in rumen fluid.
