Drug prescription awareness among dental students in Kerala: a survey of current knowledge and awareness

Background: Prescribing medicine is a core skill for dentists, impacting patient safety and requiring knowledge of medications, dosages, and risks. This study evaluates dental students' awareness of these critical aspects in Kerala, India. Methods: This study aimed to assess drug prescription awareness among dental students in Kerala, India, highlighting current knowledge, standard practices, and areas for improvement. Results: Dental pain emerged as the most commonly treated condition (57.7%), with Amoxicillin reigning as the antibiotic of choice (69.2%-76.3%). Textbooks reigned supreme as the primary source of prescription information (66.4%-58.3%), even as most participants (78.1%-72.4%) acknowledged the WHO prescribing guidelines. While interns demonstrably boasted greater confidence in their knowledge, nearly half of all participants grappled with a lack of confidence in drug dosage and frequency. Incorrect dosage stood out as the Achilles' heel of prescription practices (71.9%-77.6%). Strengths included awareness of the correct route of delivery (61.6%-74.4%) and adherence to WHO guidelines. Conclusions: Dental students in Kerala demonstrate fair drug prescription awareness but have gaps in knowledge regarding dosage, frequency, and duration. Textbooks are the primary information source, highlighting the need for more in-depth education and reliance on evidence-based resources. Targeted interventions focused on these areas could enhance prescribing practices and patient safety.

Leveraging sensor-derived data as a primary information source, this study focuses on the development of predictive models for battery and charging station conditions, particularly concerning voltage levels and associated variables. The core contribution lies in the design and implementation of a multisensory monitoring system tailored explicitly for Battery Management Systems (BMS). Unlike existing proposals, this system is founded upon a set of fundamental requirements that distinguish its design and functionality. Notably, it introduces a variance-based detection scheme for assessing the State of Health (SOH), enabling the prediction of battery degradation and facilitating fault detection within EV systems.

Since the Proterozoic, considerable expansion of the continental crust has taken place. A significant amount of granitic plutons were deposited on the earth’s crust during this time. The dynamic structure of the earth plays a close role in the genesis of granites and related rocks. Information about the formation and development of the continental crust can be understood from the study of these rocks. The emplacement of large scale anorthosite massif in shield areas was another process that contributed to the Proterozoic expansion of the continental (Mukherjee, et al.,, 2005). One of the primary sources of information regarding the formation and evolution of the continents over geological time is the genesis of granite. Enclaves of supracrustal meta-sediments intrude the Chotanagpur Gneissic Complex (CGC), which is primarily composed of granites, granitoid gneisses, and migmatites exhibiting a wide range of structure, texture, and mineralogy variations.The granitic plutons exposed in the northern fringe of the Chotanagpur Gneissic Complex, CGC, and the associated anorthosites of the Barabar Anorthosite Complex along the northen margin of Bihar holds information about the various magmatic episodes that have taken place in that area millions of years ago.

The Effectiveness of Applying the Habits of Mind Approach on Developing Female Fifth Graders’ Reading Self-Efficacy

Self-efficacy, which refers to one’s own capabilities to perform a task successfully, has been found to be a significant predictor of various educational achievements. The current study emphasizes the role of self-efficacy in the context of reading, highlighting that students’ beliefs about their reading abilities can significantly shape their motivation and performance in reading. Consequently, unsuccessful outcomes in reading may not necessarily result from a lack of skills or knowledge but rather from a deficiency in the self-efficacy beliefs needed to apply those skills effectively (Carroll & Fox, 2017). Considering the narrow scope of research on reading self-efficacy, this quasi-experimental study aimed to extend previous work by exploring how reading self-efficacy changes among female fifth-grade students through a nine-week Habits of Mind (HoM) program. This program specifically targeted the four primary sources of information that affect reading self-efficacy: progress, observational comparison, social feedback, and physiological states. Participants comprised 66 female fifth-grade students from a public elementary school, split into an experimental group of 33 who participated in the HoM program and a control group of 33 students adhering to the standard curriculum. The findings indicate that participants in the HoM program reported significantly higher reading self-efficacy levels in four sources of reading self-efficacy compared to those in the control group. Results also indicated that the improvements in reading self-efficacy and its four foundational factors, attained through implementing the HoM program, were either sustained or experienced further growth over time. We recommend that this approach might help students develop a lifelong passion for reading, along with the confidence they need to overcome reading challenges.

Making 1H-1H Couplings More Accessible and Accurate with Selective 2DJ NMR Experiments Aided by 13C Satellites.

1H-1H coupling constants are one of the primary sources of information for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) structural analysis. Several selective 2DJ experiments have been proposed that allow for their individual measurement at pure shift resolution. However, all of these experiments fail in the not uncommon case when coupled protons have very close chemical shifts. First, the coupling between protons with overlapping multiplets is inaccessible due to the inability of a frequency-selective pulse to invert just one of them. Second, the strong coupling condition affects the accuracy of coupling measurements involving third spins. These shortcomings impose a limit on the effectiveness of state-of-the-art experiments, such as G-SERF or PSYCHEDELIC. Here, we introduce two new and complementary selective 2DJ experiments that we coin SERFBIRD and SATASERF. These experiments overcome the aforementioned issues by utilizing the 13C satellite signals at natural isotope abundance, which resolves the chemical shift degeneracy. We demonstrate the utility of these experiments on the tetrasaccharide stachyose and the challenging case of norcamphor, for the latter achieving measurement of all JHH couplings, while only a few were accessible with PSYCHEDELIC. The new experiments are applicable to any organic compound and will prove valuable for configurational and conformational analyses.

Heavy menstrual bleeding and dysmenorrhea in adolescents: A systematic review of self-management strategies, quality of life, and unmet needs.

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and dysmenorrhea (DM) are common gynecological problems. To systematically review the needs, quality of life (QOL), and effectiveness of self-management strategies among young women (12-25 years) with DM or HMB. Relevant terms were searched through PubMed, EBSCO, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and Ovid between 2010 and 2022. Qualitative and quantitative studies published in peer-reviewed journals, females aged 12-25, exploring DM or HMB, reporting supportive care needs, quality of life, self-treatment strategies, and/or treatment-seeking behavior. Abstracts were reviewed for eligibility by two researchers. Included studies were extracted and assessed for quality independently by two authors, with discrepancies resolved through consensus or the involvement of a third researcher. Data extracted included study details, menstrual history, symptoms, self-care strategies, and quality of life. The Joanna Briggs Institute checklists were used for quality assessment. The search returned 285 190 studies, of which 55 were eligible for inclusion. Prevalence rates of HMB and DM were in the ranges 4%-63% and 42%-94%, respectively. Over 80% of young women with DM and HMB experienced physical and psychological problems, including pelvic pain, sleep issues, mood disturbance, diarrhea, and nausea. Academic performance and daily activities were severely affected. Most (>62%) named their mothers as their primary source of information, and friends as the secondary source (10%-65%). Few studies explored needs, but they could be inferred and fell under school-related and social needs. QOL was poorer in those who had DM than those who did not. Pain was the most common issue that drove young women to find treatment. More than 70% used medication to reduce pain. More than half chose home remedies (e.g., heat therapy, massages, herbal tea, hot drinks). No studies provided information about the efficacy and dosage of medication and herbal remedies. HMB and DM have a large impact on daily living, with large areas of unmet need. Limited access to information impairs the management of symptoms and consequent QOL.

Patient-Reported Dry Eye Treatment and Burden of Care.

Dry eye is a common condition that can decrease the quality of life. This survey-based study of persons with dry eye investigated self-reported treatments (initial, current), out-of-pocket expenses, time spent on self-management, sources of care, and sources of information about their condition. Online dry eye newsletters and support groups were emailed a link to an electronic survey asking members to participate. Survey respondents were not required to answer every question. In total, 639 persons with self-reported dry eye responded (86% women, 14% men [n=623]; mean ± SD age, 55 ± 14 years [n=595]). Artificial tears were the most reported intervention (76% initially, 71% currently). The median (interquartile range) out-of-pocket treatment cost annually was $500 ($200-$1,320 [n=506]). In addition, 55% (n=544) estimated 5 to 20 min daily on self-management; 22% spent an hour or more. Ophthalmologists provided most dry eye care (67%, n=520). Only 48% (n=524) reported that their primary source of dry eye information came from their eye care clinician. Artificial tears are the primary treatment for dry eye. Ophthalmologists provide most dry eye care, but half of patients report that their eye care provider is not their primary source of information. Almost one fourth of patients spend an hour or more daily on treatments.

An Insight into Knowledge, Perspective, and Practices of Indian Optometrists towards Childhood Myopia.

The current understanding of clinical approaches and barriers in managing childhood myopia among Indian optometrists is limited. This research underscores the necessity and relevance of evidence-based practice guidelines by exploring their knowledge, attitude, and practice towards childhood myopia. A self-administered internet-based 26-item survey was circulated online among practicing optometrists in India. The questions assessed the demographics, knowledge, self-reported clinical practice behavior, barriers, source of information guiding their management, and extent of adult caregiver engagement for childhood myopia. Of 393 responses, a significant proportion of respondents (32.6-92.4%) were unaware of the ocular complications associated with high myopia, with less than half (46.5%) routinely performing ocular biometry in clinical practice. Despite the growing awareness of emerging myopia management options, the uptake remains generally poor, with single-vision distance full-correction spectacles (70.3%) being the most common mode of vision correction. Barriers to adopting optimal myopia care are medicolegal concerns, absence of clinical practice guidelines, and inadequate consultation time. Own clinical experience and original research articles were the primary sources of information supporting clinical practice. Most (>70%) respondents considered involving the adult caregiver in their child's clinical decision-making process. While practitioners' awareness and activity of newer myopia management strategies are improving, there is plenty of scope for its enhancement. The importance of evidence-based practice guidelines and continuing education on myopia control might help practitioners enhance their clinical decision-making skills.

Application of the Human Opportunity Index in Evaluating the Effectiveness of the Administration Process and Its Implication on Service Quality in Healthcare Units

This research aims to determine the inequality of opportunities in the health sector. Researchers identified three primary sources of information in a database search to construct the organizational health index: the permanent continuous household survey, the quarterly provincial household survey, and the administrative records of the Department of Health Statistics system. The study employed a data matching mechanism to merge the two databases but discovered discrepancies in the live birth and death data, leading to a lack of confidence in the data's quality. The results show that the evolution of health opportunities in the last decade is generally positive, although there are still gaps in access to health insurance and health checks during pregnancy. The study found that the gap was primarily due to socioeconomic differences between individuals. An analysis of changes in the organizational health index in the health sector shows that sectoral policies play a significant role in improving access to health services. This increase in access was primarily achieved by the region's health policies, which ensured proportional increases for all individuals. However, there needs to be a greater focus on equal opportunities for access to health services to ensure that all individuals have equal access to quality health services.

Research methodology For the design of this case study, the authors used primary sources of information from the shops visited by them in preparation of the case and website of Fred Perry and secondary sources of information from both academic and journalistic publications. Case overview/synopsis Fred Perry is a premium clothing brand, well-known for its polo shirts. It was created by Mr Fred Perry, a British tennis player. The brand’s stated values are integrity, personality and individuality. Throughout its history, the brand has been adopted by different British subcultures but recently it has faced a challenge because of the brand appropriation by the Proud Boys, a US far-right white supremacy group and other extremist groups as Antifa and hooligans. The nature and actions of the group mean that Fred Perry runs the risk of losing control over its brand equity. This brand hijack means that Fred Perry risks alienating some of its customers by openly opposing the group but also by embracing this subculture’s appropriation. Practically, the brand opposed the appropriation in a press release and by putting an end to the sale of the black and yellow polo shirts in the USA and Canada. Fred Perry has also made a lot of efforts to reposition the brand away from extremist groups while maintaining its strong historical and cultural roots. Through this case study, students will have the opportunity to discuss this topic and explore solutions for brands that face this type of dilemma. Complexity academic level This case is designed to be used in a marketing management, brand strategy or consumer behavior/culture course, especially in the subfield of market segmentation in the telecommunications sector. Specifically, this case is designed for college seniors or master students with basic strategic marketing training. This case will help students understand the difference between the brand identity that the brand owners intend and the brand image that consumers actually perceive. It provides the basis of discussions on the topics of brand management, consumer culture, consumers-brands relationships, brand architecture, brand equity, brand appropriation and repositioning strategy.

From womb to world: mapping gut microbiota-related health literacy among Italian mothers, a cross-sectional study

BackgroundThe gut microbiota is a key determinant of long-term health. Promoting maternal health literacy may enhance children well-being. Aim of the present study was to assess gut microbiota-related health literacy of Italian women and identify potential gaps in awareness.MethodsA cross-sectional survey study was conducted using an online questionnaire (17 questions) on determinants and long-term impact of infant gut microbiota. The survey targeted Italian pregnant women and mothers of children under 2 years old, and was distributed through various social media channels between September 28th and November 15th, 2022. A total score was calculated as the sum of positive answers. Data on demographics, pregnancy status, and pre-existing knowledge of the infant gut microbiota were also collected. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied.ResultsThe questionnaire was completed by 1076 women. Median total score was 9 [7–11]. The 81.7% of respondents declared prior knowledge of the gut microbiota. The internet was among the most commonly cited primary sources of information. Independent predictors of total score were having a university degree (B = 0.656, p = 0.002) and prior knowledge (B = 2.246, p < 0.001). Conversely, older age was associated with lower total scores (B = -0.092, p < 0.001). The least known determinants of infant gut microbiota were gestational BMI, prematurity, mode of delivery and NICU stay. Pregnant women failed to recognize the role of breastfeeding in the development of infant gut microbiota more frequently than non-pregnant women. The 97.5% of participants reported increased interest in the gut microbiota, with heightened interest associated with prior knowledge.ConclusionsOur study revealed a moderate level of knowledge about infant gut microbiota among respondents, emphasizing the positive impact of prior knowledge on understanding and interest. Targeted educational interventions are needed to address awareness gaps, especially concerning the influence of breastfeeding on infant gut microbiota. Healthcare providers have the potential to enhance women's knowledge and awareness of this topic.

Content validity of the electronic faces thermometer scale for pain in children: is a picture worth more than a thousand words?

Early recognition of pain in children is crucial, and their self-report is the primary source of information. However, communication about pain in healthcare settings can be challenging. For non-verbal communication regarding different symptoms, children prefer digital tools. The electronic Faces Thermometer Scale (eFTS) utilizes a universal design with colors, face emojis, and numbers on an 11-point scale (0-10) for pain assessment. The aim of this study was to establish content validity of the eFTS for pain assessments in children. A mixed methods design was used. The study took place at a university hospital in eastern Sweden, involving 102 children aged 8-17 years who visited outpatient clinics. Participants were presented with 17 pictures representing varying pain levels and asked to assess hypothetical pain using the eFTS. A think-aloud approach was employed, prompting children to verbalize their thoughts about assessments and the eFTS. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics, together with a qualitative approach for analysis of think-aloud conversations. A total of 1,734 assessments of hypothetical pain using the eFTS were conducted. The eFTS differentiated between no pain (level 0-1) and pain (level 2-10). However, no clear agreement was found in the differentiation between hypothetical pain intensity levels (level 2-10). The analysis revealed that children utilized the entire scale, ranging from no pain to high pain, incorporating numbers, colors, and face emojis in their assessments. The variability in assessments was influenced by prior experiences, which had an impact on the statistical outcome in our study. However, employing the think-aloud method enhances our understanding of how children utilize the scale and perceive its design, including the incorporation of emotion-laden anchors. Children express a preference for using the eFTS to assess their pain during hospital visits.

Application of E-Services in the Urban Local Government in Bangladesh: A Study on Rajshahi City Corporation

Public sector information and communication technology (ICT) has a long history of using mainframe operations in the 1970s and microcomputing in the 1990s. It is recognized by the Government of Bangladesh that ICT has a development impact, as it enhances access to information, the quality of public service delivery and strengthens good governance practices. Since the ending of 2019, the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic has revived the importance of e-governance. In the initial stage of this climacteric period when people were socially distanced, restricted in quarantine, and not interacting face-to-face with each other created a whale of a ponderosas of e-governance in Bangladesh. Without any doubt, e-governance is the prime catalyst for urban development. Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) is one of the oldest and leading municipalities in e-governance adaptation in Bangladesh. RCC, jointly with the local government division under the ministry of local government, has introduced e-governance through initiating an electronic birth registration information system (EBRIS) in 2001. This is one of the best paradigms for adapting e-governance at the urban local government level in Bangladesh. As a part of e-governance, RCC has launched Smart Auto-Rickshaw Management System (SARMS) to reduce traffic congestion on city roads. The study, based on primary sources of information, seeks to assess the role of SARMS in reducing traffic congestion on city streets as part of e-governance. In order to properly implement e-governance in Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), researchers have come up with two recommendations for e-service providers following two broad sections. A rich ICT infrastructure is a prerequisite for providing e-services to the recipients. This study is based on empirical research. This first section of this paper is equipped with the details of the respondents, overall opinions of the respondents on e-governance are covered by second section, the third section is depictured the status of e-services in RCC. However, the last section is enclosed by the specific opinions of the respondents on EBRIS and SARMS.

The correlation between the need for continuing care services, influencing factors, and social support and discharge readiness among discharged patients with pulmonary tuberculosis in China: A cross-sectional study

ObjectiveTo understand the relationship between the need for continuing care services and influencing factors, social support, readiness for discharge among discharged pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients. MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 170 patients from a database of discharged patients with PTB from September 2023 to January 2024. A demographic and disease characteristics questionnaire, continuing care services basic modality questionnaire, continuing care services need questionnaire, the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS) were used for this investigation. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the associated factors. ResultsThe mean total score for the need for continuing care services among patients with PTB discharged from the hospital was (121.61 ± 22.98). The dimension with the highest score was health education guidance need. Compared to the the original hospital medical personnel, the primary source of care information after discharge was the local medical institutions was statistically significant and negatively correlated with continuing care service need (P = 0.005). Social support was positively associated with need for continuing care services (P = 0.042). ConclusionDischarged PTB patients had a high degree of continuing care service need. Factors influencing the need for continuing care services are the primary source of care information after discharge was the local medical institutions, the social support. Medical staff need to provide targeted continuing care services based on relevant influencing factors to meet the discharge needs of patients.

Uncovering the Past Through Voices: Exploring Oral History as a Primary Source: A Case Study of the National Archives of Republic Indonesia [ANRI

This research explains the use of the oral history collection of the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) to optimize historical information as a primary source. Sources of information with this primary category relate to information from historical actors or eyewitnesses and witnesses to an event. Oral history archives are the main content of this research. The method used is descriptive qualitative, focusing on observing the content of oral history information published on websites and various social media platforms affiliated with ANRI. This research aims to analyze the oral history collection owned by ANRI and the historical information content contained in the collection. The results of this paper describe the content of oral history, which has primary information specifications based on the information needs in the archives. This information is helpful to complement information originating from textual sources. A Weighted Stacking Ensemble Model With Sampling for Fake Reviews Detection

Customers use reviews as a primary source of information to judge a product or service. Positive reviews help boost companies’ reputations, increasing their revenue by attracting new clients, and increasing the purchasing order size. On the other hand, negative reviews significantly reduce sales, which might be the case due to competitive advantage. Organizations can use fake (i.e., misleading or fraudulent) reviews to generate fast profits by deceiving customers into buying their products. Recently, various methods to assess the legitimacy of reviews have been introduced using advances in machine learning. However, existing methods fall short of achieving highly accurate detection results for unbalanced classes. We aimed to create a spam review identification model using ensemble-based learning while balancing classes using sampling techniques. This article proposes a weighted stacking ensemble model with sampling (WSEM-S) for efficient fake reviews detection. We used <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$n$</tex-math> </inline-formula> -gram models to effectively model language data for feature retrieval. The experimental results on three customer reviews datasets: YELPNYC, Deceptive Opinion Spam Corpus (DOSC) v1.4, and Deception datasets show that the proposed model outperforms the conventional machine learning techniques Naïve Bayes, logistic regression, K-nearest neighbor (KNN), random forest, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and convolutional neural network (CNN) as well as the state-of-the-art ensemble models.

INFLUENCE OF MASS MEDIA ON THE RESIDENTS OF GAINDAKOT, NEPAL DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Background: Effective communication during health crises is vital, yet the widespread distribution of information via diverse channels has led to an “infodemic,” propagating misinformation and malpractices adoption. This study aimed to examine the influence of mass media in the adoption of precautionary behavior, and the spreading of fear and panic during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was undertaken in Gaindakot, Nepal, encompassing individuals aged 18-59. Face-to-face interviews employing a structured questionnaire were employed to collect data from 380 participants selected through a multistage systematic random sampling method. The collected data underwent through SPSS version 20, for descriptive statistics, and bivariate and multivariate analyses. Results: More than two-thirds (69.2%) of the respondents demonstrated a high level of adopting precautionary measures, while 43.2% of participants reported feeling fear and panic due to information from mass media. Social media (61.6%) and television (32.9%) were identified as the primary sources of information during the COVID-19 pandemic. Precautionary behavior adoption was significantly associated with ethnicity, income, and access to mass media while the spreading of fear and panic was significantly associated with sex, marital status, and employment status of the respondent. Conclusions: Mass media plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions and behaviors during public health emergencies. This study recommends that accurate and targeted media messaging is crucial to promoting desirable health behaviors and reducing misinformation.

Exploring Jalaluddin Rumi's Philosophy of Love through YouTube Content ‘Ngaji Filsafat’ on MJS Channel

Currently, the YouTube platform has become the primary source of information and entertainment for many people. The YouTube platform offers a variety of engaging educational content, including content related to the study of philosophy. ‘Ngaji Filsafat’ is a segment that has been around for 10 years on the MJS Channel and has consistently presented philosophy discussions in a light and engaging manner. Episode 144, which explores the philosophy of love by Jalaluddin Rumi, became the most popular episode with 1.6 million viewers. This article aims to uncover how delivering content through this platform can influence the audience's perception and understanding of Rumi's philosophy of love. This research utilizes a qualitative approach, with data collection methods involving observation and document analysis. The collected data will be analyzed descriptively and analytically using the Miles and Huberman analysis model. The study indicates that delivering the concepts of Jalaluddin Rumi’s philosophy of love through the ‘ngaji filsafat’ content can enhance and deepen the viewers insights on the MJS Channel YouTube platform.

Pharmacological articles in the German magazine DIE ZEIT (THE TIME)-content, adequacy, and comprehensibility.

The German weekly magazine DIE ZEIT (THE TIME) reaches more than one million readers per issue, mainly from high-income social classes. Pharmacological content is frequent in DIE ZEIT. As it therefore reaches many people who generally have no in-depth knowledge of pharmacology, it can be assumed that DIE ZEIT is an important primary source of information. It should be its task to depict the drugs widely used by the population and to present them correctly and comprehensibly. This study analyzes 71 articles from 2012 to 2022 in terms of form, content, and comprehensibility. The analysis shows that in DIE ZEIT, drug groups largely correspond to the prescription figures and disease prevalence in Germany, with cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric, and pain medications being frequently discussed. There are deviations in the case of oncological drugs, for example, which are discussed more frequently than prescribed. New drug approvals are reported less frequently, and when they are, it is usually about the research phase. DIE ZEIT often reports on findings that are less than a week old and frequently quotes trustworthy experts, but no scientific sources can be found in around a quarter of the articles. A COVID-19 effect can also be identified in the years 2020 to 2022, as reporting on drugs for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) predominated. An important point of criticism was identified with regard to comprehensibility. Less than half of the articles achieved the cut-off value for general comprehensibility specified by the Textlab analysis program, and only one article achieved the value for target group-oriented comprehensibility. This analysis confirms the problem that science communication is often too complicated and incomprehensible. It discusses the tension between the prescribed drugs and the mission of DIE ZEIT to entertain and should serve as a basis for analyzing other newspapers. Finally, we make specific suggestions how presentation of pharmacological topics in lay media can be improved in the future.

Public Awareness of Common Age-Related Eye Diseases in Northern Saudi Arabia.

This population-based descriptive survey was conducted on 411 Saudi adults aged 18-70 residing in Arar City,Saudi Arabia, over six months from September 2023. Random sampling was employed, and awareness levels were assessed using a pre-designed questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS, version 20.0; IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY). Among the 411 participants, 225 (54.7%) were aged 18-29 years, 312 (76%) were females, and 299 (72.6%) held a bachelor's degree or diploma. Regarding awareness, 71.3% knew about cataracts, but nearly half erroneously believed it could be treated solely medically. For diabetic retinopathy (DR), 366 (89%) recognized lifestyle modifications, and 378 (92%) understood screening as preventive measures. Most participants understood prevention methods for all four diseases, but misconceptions about treatment options were observed. Awareness of glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) was lower. No significant age-related differences were found in awareness, except for cataracts (P = 0.001). Education significantly influenced awareness of cataracts, DR, and glaucoma (P = 0.001, 0.013, and 0.008, respectively), but not ARMD (P = 0.606). The study found that the internet is the primary source of information on AREDs for most participants, except for cataracts, where friends and relatives are prominent. The study reveals varying awareness levels of AREDs among Saudi adults. Although most participants understood preventive measures, misconceptions about treatment underscore the need for accurate education channels. Healthcare professionals must ensure information reliability to effectively combat misinformation and enhance awareness of AREDs.
