Characteristic, source apportionment and effect of photochemical loss of ambient VOCs in an emerging megacity of Central China

During the transportation from emission sources to sampling site, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) undergo photochemical losses which have significant effects for tropospheric ozone (O3) formation and VOCs source apportionment. In this study, based on hourly speciated VOC data from May 23, to July 8, 2019 with high O3 concentrations, the concentration level, chemical composition, and diurnal variation of observed VOCs were studied, and the initial concentration of VOCs was obtained by combining the local emission inventory in Zhengzhou, Central China. The impact of photochemical loss on source apportionment was evaluated using the Positive Matrix Factorization/Multilinear Engine 2-Species Ratio (PMF/ME2-SR) model based on observed and initial VOCs concentration (OC-PMF and IC-PMF). Results suggest that during the observed period, the average concentration of total VOCs (TVOCs) was 23.74 ± 9.20 ppbv, and alkanes (3.92 ± 2.40 ppbv) were the predominant component. The photochemical losses of TVOCs were approximately 10.15 ± 7.13 ppbv, with an average loss rate of 29.9%. The ozone formation potential (OFP) based on the initial VOCs concentration was 2.2 times higher than that observed VOCs concentration. Alkenes contributed the most to OFP and were also the largest contributors to photochemical losses. TVOC concentrations increased by 5.0% during O3 pollution compared to non-O3 pollution. Seven sources of VOCs were determined, including biomass burning, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), vehicle emission, industrial emission, solvent usage, gasoline evaporation, and biogenic emission. Compared to the results of IC-PMF, the contributions of these sources in OC-PMF were underestimated by 15.4%, 14.4%, 13.0%, 11.7%, 31.5%, 7.6%, and 4.7%, respectively. This study still exhibits certain limitations in calculation method, and further exploration can be conducted in the future.

Novel approach for identifying VOC emission characteristics based on mobile monitoring platform data and deep learning: Application of source apportionment in a chemical industrial park

Refined volatile organic compound (VOC) emission characteristics are crucial for accurate source apportionment in chemical industrial parks. The data from mobile monitoring platforms in chemical industrial parks contain pollution information that is not intuitively displayed, requiring further excavation. A novel approach was proposed to identify VOC emission characteristics using the class activation map (CAM) technology of convolutional neural network (CNN), which was applied on the mobile monitoring platform data (MD) derived from a typical fine chemical industrial park. It converts a large amount of monitoring data with high spatiotemporal complexity into simple and interpretable characteristic maps, effectively improving the identification effect of VOC emission characteristics, supporting more accurate source apportionment of VOC pollution around the park. Using this method, the VOC emission characteristics of eight key factories were identified. VOC source apportionment in the park was conducted for one day using a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and seven combined factor profiles (CFPs) were calculated. Based on the identified VOC emission characteristics, the main pollution sources and their contributions to surrounding schools and residential areas were determined, revealing that one pesticide factory (named LKA) had the highest contribution ratio. The source apportionment results indicated that the impact of the chemical industrial park on the surrounding areas varied from morning to afternoon, which to some extent reflected the intermittent production methods employed for fine chemicals.

VOC source apportionment, reactivity, secondary transformations, and their prioritization using fuzzy-AHP method in a coal-mining city in India.

This study assessed the air quality status in different functional zones of Dhanbad-a coal-mining and industrial hub, based on the measurement of aromatic and halogenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using gas chromatography. The study encompasses source apportionment of VOCs and their chemical reactivity in terms of OH radical loss rate (LOH), ozone-forming potential (OFP), and their secondary organic aerosol forming potential (SOAp). Furthermore, prioritization of VOCs based on a fuzzy-analytical hierarchical process (F-AHP) has also been done. The results found xylene species to have the highest concentration in all three seasons across traffic-intersection and industrial zones and toluene at the institutional zone. The study identified four sources using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, viz., mixed traffic exhaust (35%), coal combustion sources (30%), industrial (26%), and solvent usage (9%). LOH and SOAp were ~ 16 times more at the industrial and traffic-intersection zone than the institutional zone. The aromatic species contributed 97% to the OFP, and many species exhibited less contribution to the mixing ratio of VOCs but displayed a high contribution to LOH, OFP, and SOAp, suggesting the need to prefer reactivity-based strategies in addition to concentration-based strategies in the future for their regulation. The F-AHP-based priority component analysis identified 16 species out of 29 in the priority watch list (nine in tier-1, four in tier-2, and three in tier-3). The paucity of data and lack of ambient air quality standards on VOCs (except benzene) make it difficult to determine which aspect should be dealt with first and which species require more attention. Therefore, the F-AHP method used in this study could help identify the influencing parameters to be considered while devising efficient VOC management policies.

Ozone Pollution in Suzhou During Early Summertime: Formation Mechanism and Interannual Variation

This study investigated the concentrations of atmospheric pollutants in the urban area of Suzhou from May to June, 2017-2021. The variation characteristics and annual changes of ozone (O3), nitrogen oxide (NOx), total oxidant (Ox), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analyzed. The O3 formation mechanism and its annual changes were studied using an Observation-Based Model (OBM), and VOCs source apportionments and their trends were discussed. The results indicated that ① The volume fractions of Ox and the concentrations of NOx and CO have decreased in the urban area of Suzhou in recent years, while the volume fractions of VOCs have increased, and sufficient photochemical conditions for O3 formation still existed during polluted days. ② The O3-NOx-VOCs sensitivity in Suzhou was in the VOCs-limited regime. The long-term reduction ratio between VOCs and NOx should not be less than 5:1, and aromatics and alkenes were the critical VOCs for mitigating O3 pollution. ③ The results of VOCs source apportionment revealed that industrial emissions, gasoline vehicle exhaust, and diesel engine exhaust were the major sources of VOC emissions in Suzhou. Industrial emissions and solvent usage declined from 2017 to 2021; however, gasoline vehicle exhaust and gasoline evaporation, which possess higher O3 formation potential(OFP), increased significantly. ④ The OFP source apportionments results indicated that controlling VOC emissions from solvent usage and gasoline vehicle exhaust is crucial for O3 pollution control in Suzhou.

The importance of photochemical loss to source analysis and ozone formation potential: Implications from in-situ observations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Guangzhou, China

The chemical loss of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is influenced by atmospheric and is closely related to the photochemical formation of ozone (O3). Therefore, research on the atmospheric chemical transformation of VOCs is essential to understand their contribution to O3 formation. This study collected data on photochemical-related atmospheric components and meteorological factors in spring at a typical comprehensive observation platform in Guangzhou, China. The photochemical age method was used to evaluate the loss of VOCs due to atmospheric photochemical transformation and to analyze the contribution of such transformation to the source apportionment of VOCs and to the ozone formation potential (OFP). The results show that the mean photochemical loss of total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) during the observation period was 4.1 ppbv, accounting for approximately 15% of the initial TVOC content. Alkenes had the highest consumed concentration/initial concentration (C/I ratio) of 37.3%. A comparison of the source apportionment results obtained using observational positive matrix factorization (Ob-PMF) and in situ positive matrix factorization (In-PMF) revealed that photochemical losses significantly affected VOCs emitted from industrial and biological sources. Furthermore, neglecting the photochemical loss of VOCs in PMF source apportionment could lead to an underestimation of the contribution of VOCs from industrial and biological sources. The calculated values of OFP under VOC loss (OFPC–VOCs) showed that OFPC-VOCs constituted approximately 30% of the OFP of the initial VOCs. 93.2% of the OFP was attributed to the photochemical loss of alkenes and aromatic hydrocarbons, indicating their significant influence on O3 formation. This study emphasizes the importance of fully considering the photochemical loss of VOCs for accurately assessing their sources and contributions to ozone pollution. It also provides theoretical support for formulating VOC emission reduction strategies in the Pearl River Delta region.

Source apportionment of consumed volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere

Conventional source apportionments of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been based on observed and initial concentrations after photochemical correction. However, these results have not been related to ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Thus, the apportioned contributions could not effectively support secondary pollution control development. Source apportionment of the VOCs consumed in forming O3 and SOA is needed. A consumed VOC source apportionment approach was developed and applied to hourly speciated VOCs data from June to August 2022 measured in Laoshan, Qingdao. Biogenic emissions (56.3%), vehicle emissions (17.2%), and gasoline evaporation (9.37%) were the main sources of consumed VOCs. High consumed VOCs from biogenic emissions mainly occurred during transport from parks to the southwest and northwest of study site. During the O3 pollution period, biogenic emissions (46.3%), vehicle emissions (24.2%), and gasoline evaporation (14.3%) provided the largest contributions to the consumed VOCs. However, biogenic emissions contribution increased to 57.1% during the non-O3 pollution period, and vehicle emissions and gasoline evaporation decreased to 16.5% and 9.01%, respectively. Biogenic emissions and the mixed source of combustion sources and solvent use contributed the most to O3 and SOA formation potentials during the O3 pollution period, respectively.

Differences in compositions and effects of VOCs from vehicle emission detected using various methods

Vehicle exhaust and oil fuel evaporation emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The differences in VOC compositions and their effects determined using different methods have not been addressed sufficiently. In this study, VOC samples are obtained from single gasoline and diesel vehicle exhausts using a portable emission measurement system, from a tunnel in Yichang City, and from gasoline and diesel evaporation at gas stations. A total of 107 VOCs are analysed. The calculated VOC source profiles (based on VOC source profiles of single-vehicle type and vehicle fleet composition in the tunnel) and the tested source profiles (from a tunnel test) are compared. The results show that gasoline burning can reduce alkenes from a mass fraction of 53.1% (for evaporation) to 3.6% (for burning), as well as increase the mass fraction of alkenes from 1.3% (for diesel evaporation) to 34.0% (for diesel burning). The calculated VOC source profiles differed from the tested VOC source profiles, with a coefficient of divergence of 0.6. Ethane, ethylene, n-undecane, and n-dodecane are used to distinguish VOCs in gasoline and diesel exhausts. Cis-2-butene, 2-methylpentane, m/p-xylene, o-xylene, and n-decane can be used to separate gasoline from diesel. The xylene/ethylbenzene ratios accurately reveal the photochemical age. Gasoline burning increases health risks associated with VOCs compared with gasoline evaporation. Furthermore, it modifies the main contributor to ozone formation potential. This study is expected to facilitate refined VOC source apportionment and studies pertaining to speciated emission inventories.

Identify the key emission sources for mitigating ozone pollution: A case study of urban area in the Yangtze River Delta region, China

Ozone (O3) has become the most critical air pollutant in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region of China. Research on the O3 formation mechanism and its precursor sources (including nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)) could provide a theoretical basis for mitigating O3 pollution in this region. In this study, simultaneous field experiments were conducted for air pollutants in a typical urban area (Suzhou) in the YRD region in 2022. The capacity of in-situ O3 formation, O3-NOX-VOCs sensitivities and sources of O3 precursors were analyzed. The results showed that in-situ formation contributed 20.8 % of the O3 concentration in the warm season (April to October) of the Suzhou urban area. Compared with the warm season average, the concentrations of various O3 precursors increased on pollution days. The O3-NOX-VOCs sensitivity was the VOCs-limited regime based on the average concentrations during the warm season. O3 formation was most sensitive to anthropogenic VOCs, of which oxygenated VOCs, alkenes and aromatics were the key species. There was a VOCs-limited regime in spring and autumn, while a transitional regime in summer due to the changes in NOX concentrations. This study considered NOX emission from VOCs sources and calculated the contribution of various sources to O3 formation. The results of VOCs source apportionment showed that diesel engine exhaust and fossil fuel combustion had a dominant proportion, but O3 formation presented significant negative sensitivities to the above two sources because of their high NOX emissions. There were significant sensitivities of O3 formation to gasoline vehicle exhaust and VOCs evaporative emissions (gasoline evaporation and solvent usage). The contribution of VOCs evaporative emissions during the O3 pollution episode was significantly higher than the average; therefore, controlling VOCs evaporative emissions during the O3 pollution episode is critical. These results provide feasible strategies to mitigate O3 pollution.

A comprehensive investigation on source apportionment and multi-directional regional transport of volatile organic compounds and ozone in urban Zhengzhou

To understand the characteristics, source apportionment, and regional transport of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ozone (O3) in a typical city with severe air pollution in central China, we observed and analyzed 115 VOC species at an urban site in Zhengzhou from 29 July to 26 September 2021. During this period, observation- and emission-based approaches revealed that Zhengzhou was in a VOC-limited regime. The average concentration of total VOCs (TVOCs) was 162.25 ± 71.42 μg/m3, dominated by oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs, 34.49%), alkanes (24.29%), and aromatics (19.49%). Six VOC sources were identified using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, including paint solvent usage (25.32%), secondary production (24.11%), industrial production (19.22%), vehicle exhaust (16.18%), biogenic emission (8.87%), and combustion (6.30%). To assess the regional contribution and source apportionment of VOCs and O3, Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) with the Ozone Source Apportionment Technology (OSAT) was used for simulation. Results showed that the VOCs were significantly affected by local emissions (about 70%), while O3 was mainly attributed to regional and super-regional transport. Regarding multi-directional regional transport of VOCs and O3, dominant contributions were from the northeast and east-northeast directions, and O3 contributions were also predominantly from the east and east-southeast directions. In terms of source apportionment, the transportation and industrial sectors (including solvent usage) were the major contributors to O3 and VOCs. To alleviate VOCs and O3 pollution, transportation and industrial emission reduction should be strengthened, and regional coordination, especially from the northeast to east-southeast directions, should be emphasized in addition to local management.

Identifying the airport as a key urban VOC source in the Pearl River Delta, China

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main precursors of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in the atmosphere. The traditional positive matrix factorization (PMF) source apportionment method is mainly based on the time series of VOCs at a single site, and its results cannot indicate the difference spatially. In this study, a refined spatial distribution study was carried out in Shenzhen in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China, with 110 sampling sites covering the city. Ninety-two VOC compounds were quantitatively analyzed and the spatial distribution characteristics of various VOCs were obtained. Based on the PMF source apportionment of multisite samples, five types of sources and their spatial distributions of vehicle exhaust, gasoline leakage, industrial processes, airport-related sources and regional transport were identified. The airport source was resolved for the first time in the VOC source apportionment and was further verified by the measured source spectra in the airport. It is found that the airport-related sources accounted for 19% of the ambient VOC concentrations in Shenzhen and had strong Cl radical reaction activity, indicating that the airport-related sources may have a greater impact on O3 and SOA formation in coastal cities than previously expected.

Quantitative evidence from VOCs source apportionment reveals O3 control strategies in northern and southern China

Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution has received widespread attention because its rising trend and adverse ecological impacts. However, the extremely strong photochemical reactions of its precursor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) increase the difficulty of reducing VOCs emissions to alleviate O3. Here, we carried out a one-year comprehensive observation in two representative cities, Tianjin (TJ, Northern China) and Guangzhou (GZ, Southern China). By revealing the concentration characteristics of three different types of VOCs, i.e., initial VOCs without photochemical reaction (In-VOCs), consumed VOCs (C-VOCs), and measured VOCs after the reaction (M-VOCs), we elucidated the important role of C-VOCs in the formation of O3. Although the overall trends were similar in both cities, the average concentration level of VOCs in GZ was 8.2 ppbv higher than that in TJ, and the photochemical loss of VOCs was greater by 2.2 ppbv. In addition, various drivers affecting O3 generation from C-VOCs were specifically explored, and it was found that most alkenes of TJ were key substances for rapid O3 formation compared to aromatics of GZ. Meanwhile, favorable meteorological conditions such as high temperature (T > 31 °C in TJ, and T > 33 °C in GZ), low relative humidity (56% in TJ and 45% in GZ), and stable atmospheric environment (proper pressure and gentle wind speed) also contribute to the generation of O3. More importantly, we combined chemical kinetics and receptor model to quantify the three-type VOCs source contributions and assess the potential impact of C-VOCs sources on O3 production, thus proposing environmental abatement technologies corresponding to the three types of VOCs. The differences in the comparison results of the three-type VOCs highlight the need to reduce O3 pollution from C-VOCs sources, which provides insights for future clean air policies development.

Source apportionment of VOCs based on photochemical loss in summer at a suburban site in Beijing

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are critical precursors of photochemical smog. Quantitatively evaluating the VOC sources and their contributions to ozone formation provides valuable information for photochemical pollution abatement. However, due to the fast oxidization of VOCs during transport in the atmosphere, source apportionment via receptor models using measured VOC data inevitably has a systematic deviation. In this study, we conducted a field measurement of VOCs at a suburban site in Beijing and evaluated the influences of photochemical oxidization on VOC source contributions. The initial VOC concentration, defined as the sum of measured VOC concentration and their photochemical losses. The real-time photochemical age-based parameterization method and a sequential reaction model were applied to characterize the photochemical loss of VOCs. Also, the photochemical loss of VOCs was considered in the he positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. Photochemical losses, on average, accounted for 5.6% of total VOCs (TVOCs) and 59.2% of alkenes, indicating that the impact of photochemical reaction cannot be ignored. Alkanes were the most significant contributors to both measured and initial TVOCs, while the alkenes and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs), especially ethylene and isoprene, contributed the most to ozone formation potential. By adopting the positive matrix factorization model, seven VOC sources were identified for both measured and initial TVOCs. Vehicular emissions, industrial sources, and biomass burning were the top three contributors to ambient TVOC. Photochemistry significantly influenced the results of source apportionment, e.g., the contribution of biogenic sources (+4.4%), industrial emissions (+2.5%) and solvent usage (+2.5%) based on initial VOCs were larger than that of measured VOCs, while the contribution of gasoline vehicular emissions (−9.9%) was lower than that of measured VOCs. Our results highlight the necessity of adequately considering the photochemical loss of VOCs for accurately apportioning the emission sources.

Characteristics and Source Apportionment of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in a Typical Industrial Area in Dongguan During Periods of Ozone and Non-ozone Pollution in Summer

To investigate the characteristics and sources of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a typical industrial zone in Dongguan, 56 VOCs species were continuously measured in Houjie Town of Dongguan in summer of 2020. In addition, mass concentrations of O3, NOx, and CO and meteorological data were synchronously collected. Then, characteristics of total VOCs and major species, the contributions of major VOCs species to ozone formation potential (OFP), and source apportionment of VOCs under the different ozone concentrations were discussed. The mean mixing ratio of VOCs was 53.1×10-9 including aromatics (24.7×10-9), alkanes (23.7×10-9), alkenes (3.9×10-9), and alkynes (0.7×10-9). The mean mixing ratios of aromatics, alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes increased approximately 10%, 43%, 38%, and 98% during the period of ozone pollution, respectively, compared with those during the period of non-ozone pollution. Aromatics contributed the most to OFP during the periods of both ozone pollution and non-ozone pollution, followed by alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. Solvent sources, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leakage, fossil fuel combustion, and hydrocarbon volatilization were resolved using the PMF model, which accounted for 60%±20%, 16%±11%, 15%±11%, and 9%±6% of total VOCs, respectively. During the period of ozone pollution, the contribution of solvent sources to the total VOCs decreased to 44%, whereas that of LPG leakage and hydrocarbon volatilization increased to 21% and 16%, respectively.

Characteristic Analysis and Source Apportionment of VOCs in Urban Areas of Beijing in Summer

Refined characterization of volatile organic compound (VOCs) components and source apportionment can provide scientific and effective support for ozone (O3) pollution prevention and control. Using hourly-resolution VOCs online data monitored at urban sites in Beijing from July to August in 2020, the chemical characteristics of VOCs and ozone formation potential (OFP) in environmental receptors during high and low ozone concentration periods were analyzed, and refined source apportionment was conducted with a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The results showed that the average φ[total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs)] at the monitoring sites during the observation period was 12.65×10-9, and the φ(TVOCs) during the high and low ozone concentration periods were 13.44×10-9 and 12.33×10-9, respectively, with an OFP of 107.6 μg·m-3and 99.2 μg·m-3, respectively. Ozone production was controlled by VOCs, with the highest reactivity of aromatic hydrocarbons and the top three species contributing to OFP being isoprene, toluene, and m/p-xylene. The main sources of VOCs in environmental receptors during low O3 periods included vehicular emissions (26.4%), background emissions (15.7%), solvent using (13.0%), auto repair (12.8%), secondary generation sources (9.7%), biomass combustion (6.1%), printing industry (5.7%), LNG-fueled vehicles (5.5%), and vegetation emissions (5.0%), of which background emissions, secondary generation, and printing industry sources have been little discussed in recent studies of VOCs source apportionment in Beijing. The contribution of auto repair sources and secondary generation sources increased by 3.4% and 2.6%, respectively, during the high O3 periods compared to those during the low O3 periods, and vehicular emissions remained the most significant source of VOCs contribution in the urban area of Beijing. Vegetation emissions rose from 07:00 pm and reach a maximum in the late afternoon. The contribution of background emission sources was less variable; vehicular emissions and LNG-fueled vehicle sources showed a morning and evening peak, with a relatively low contribution in the afternoon.

Characteristics and Source Apportionment of Vehicular VOCs Emissions in a Tunnel Study

To explore the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from vehicular exhaust sources and evaporative sources with ethanol gasoline (E10) as the main fuel, VOCs sampling campaigns were carried out in the north third ring tunnel of Zhengzhou city for two consecutive weeks in December 2019. In addition, the characteristics of traffic flow and environmental information were also monitored in the tunnel. Firstly, 106 VOCs were quantified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and then source apportionment of VOCs in the tunnel was carried out using a positive matrix factorization (PMF5.0)-chemical mass balance (CMB8.2) composite model. Finally, the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) of vehicle exhaust sources and evaporative sources were analyzed using the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) and fractional aerosol coefficient (FAC). The results showed that ρ(VOCs) in the tunnel was (2794.5±147.4) μg·m-3 during the experiment, among which halogenated hydrocarbons[(32.4±2.0)%] accounted for the highest proportion, followed by aromatic hydrocarbons[(27.5±0.6)%] and alkanes[(23.3±0.8)%]. Source apportionment of vehicular VOCs showed that exhaust emissions (62.5%)>evaporative emissions (37.5%), whereas the contribution of OFP was that exhaust emissions (71.9%)>evaporative emissions (28.1%), and the contribution of SOAFP was that exhaust emissions (75.8%)>evaporative emissions (24.2%). The dominant components of OFP in evaporative sources were m,p-diethylbenzene, isoprene, and trans-2-pentene, whereas m,p-diethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene were the dominant components of SOAFP. The major components of OFP in exhaust sources were m,p-xylene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, whereas m,p-xylene, m,p-diethylbenzene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene were the dominant components of SOAFP. In regions where ethanol gasoline is used, special attention should be paid not only to the exhaust emissions control but also to strengthening the emissions reduction of VOCs from vehicle evaporative sources, especially the high active components such as aromatic hydrocarbons and alkenes.

Characteristics, Ozone Formation Potential, and Source Apportionment of VOCs During the COVID-19 Epidemic in Xiong'an

Many restrictive measures were implemented in China from January-February 2020 to control the rapid spread of COVID-19. Many studies reported that the COVID-19 lockdown impacted PM2.5, SO2, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc. VOCs play important roles in the production of ozone and PM2.5. Ambient VOCs in Xiong'an were measured from December 25, 2019 to January 24, 2020 (prior to epidemic prevention, P1) and from January 25, 2020 to February 24, 2020 (during epidemic prevention, P2) through a VOCs online instrument. In the study, VOCs characteristics and ozone generation potential (OFP) of ambient VOCs were analyzed, and source apportionment of VOCs were analyzed by using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). The results showed that φ(TVOCs) during epidemic prevention and control was 45.1×10-9, which was approximately half of that before epidemic prevention and control (90.5×10-9). The chemical composition of VOCs showed significant changes after epidemic prevention and control, the contribution rate of alkanes increased from 37.6% to 53.8%, and the contribution rate of aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons decreased from 13.3% and 12.0% to 7.5% and 7.8%, respectively. Aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, and OVOCs decreased by more than 60%. Seven types of the top ten species were the same before and during the epidemic prevention and control, mainly low-carbon alkanes, olefins, aldehydes, and ketones. Dichloromethane, trichloromethane, and BTEXs decreased significantly. The OPP was 566 μg·m-3 and 231 μg·m-3 in P1 and P2, respectively. The OPP of VOCs decreased by more than 30%. The proportion of OFP contribution of aromatic hydrocarbons decreased significantly after the epidemic prevention and control, and the proportion of OFP contribution of alkanes and alkynes increased significantly. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was then applied for VOCs sources apportionment. Six sources were identified, including background sources, oil-gas volatile sources, combustion sources, industrial sources, solvent use sources, and vehicle exhaust sources. The results showed that after the epidemic prevention and control, the contribution rate of solvent use sources to TVOCs decreased from 24% to 9%. The contribution rates of background sources, oil-gas volatile sources, and combustion sources increased from 13%, 34%, and 24% to 6%, 14%, and 13%, respectively. The relative contributions of vehicle exhaust sources before and after epidemic prevention and control were 21% and 18%, respectively. The observation points were affected by the emission of VOCs from paroxysmal industrial sources before the epidemic prevention and control. The emission was stopped after the epidemic prevention and control, and its contribution rate was reduced from 22% before the epidemic prevention and control to 1%. The concentrations of industrial sources, solvent sources, motor vehicle tail gas sources, and combustion sources decreased by 97%, 82%, 61%, and 15%, respectively, after the epidemic prevention and control. The concentration of background sources remained stable, and the concentration of oil and gas volatile sources increased by 7%. The control of production and traffic activities cannot reduce the emission of VOCs from oil and gas volatile sources, which is the focus of VOCs control in Xiong'an.

A novel approach for VOC source apportionment combining characteristic factor and pattern recognition technology in a Chinese industrial area

Volatile organic compound (VOC) emission control and source apportionment in small-scale industrial areas have become key topics of air pollution control in China. This study proposed a novel characteristic factor and pattern recognition (CF-PR) model for VOC source apportionment based on the similarity of characteristic factors between sources and receptors. A simulation was carried out in a typical industrial area with the CF-PR model involving simulated receptor samples. Refined and accurate source profiles were constructed through in situ sampling and analysis, covering rubber, chemicals, coating, electronics, plastics, printing, incubation and medical treatment industries. Characteristic factors of n-undecane, styrene, o-xylene and propane were identified. The source apportionment simulation results indicated that the predicted contribution rate was basically consistent with the real contribution rate. Compared to traditional receptor models, this method achieves notable advantages in terms of refinement and timeliness at similar accuracy, which is more suitable for VOC source identification and apportionment in small-scale industrial areas.

Spatial-temporal Characteristics and Source Apportionment of Ambient VOCs in Southeast Mountain Area of China

Seasonal variations and sources of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were conducted at the county and rural sites in a mountain area of southeastern China. The results showed that the pattern of VOC concentrations was dominated by oxygenated VOCs (37.6%) and alkanes (25.8%), followed by halocarbons (16.8%), alkenes (11.9%), aromatics (6.87%), and alkynes (1.04%). Based on the OH radical loss rate (LOH) and ozone formation potential (OFP) analysis, alkenes had the highest chemical activity, especially the contribution of isoprene in rural areas. Aromatics contributed the most to secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation in both county and rural areas. Source apportionment of VOCs were quantified by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, including industrial emissions and combustion burning (30.1% and 43.3% in the county and rural areas, respectively) and vehicle exhausts (30.3% and 10.8%), followed by solvent usage (17.1% and 5.2%), liquid petroleum gas (LPG) usage and fuel evaporation (14.2% and 10.0%), and biogenic source (8.3% and 30.6%). The backward air trajectories showed that air mass in spring was mainly originated from the intercity transmission, while the air clusters in autumn came from the northern areas through long-range transport. The study was helpful to understand the pollution characteristics in the mountainous area and provides a scientific basis for local O3 and PM2.5 pollution control.

Spatial and Temporal Distribution Characteristics and Source Apportionment of VOCs in Lianyungang City in 2018

From April to September 2018, five sampling sites were selected in Lianyungang City for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analysis, including two sampling sites in the urban area (Lianyungang City Environmental Monitoring Supersite and Mine Design Institute), one sampling site in the industrial area (Deyuan Pharmaceutical Factory), and two sampling sites from the suburb (Hugou Management Office and YuehaiLou). The results showed that the mean VOCs concentration followed this pattern: industrial area (36.06 ± 12.2 µg m−3) > urban area (33.47 ± 13.0 µg m−3) > suburban area (27.68 ± 9.8 µg m−3). The seasonal variation of the VOCs trend in the urban and suburban areas was relatively consistent, which was different from that in industrial areas. The concentration levels of VOCs components in urban and industrial areas were relatively close, which were significantly higher than that in suburban areas. The possible sources and relative importance of VOCs in Lianyungang City atmosphere were measured by the characteristic ratio of toluene/benzene (T/B), ethane/acetylene (E/E) and isopentane/TVOCs. The contribution of traffic sources to the VOCs in Lianyungang City was significant (T/B ~ 2), and there were obvious aging phenomena in the five sampling sites (E/E > 4). The ratio of isopentane/TVOCs in the contribution of gasoline volatilization sources in urban and suburban areas was significantly bigger than that in industrial areas. According to the maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) method, aromatics (40.32–58.09%) contributed the most to ozone formation potential (OFP) at the five sampling sites. The top 10 OFP species showed that controlling n-hexane and aromatics, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and trimethylbenzene in Lianyungang City can effectively control ozone generation. Nineteen typical VOCs components were selected and the sources of VOCs from five sampling points were analyzed by the principal component analysis (PCA) model. The sources of VOCs in different areas in Lianyungang were relatively consistent. Five sources were analyzed at the two sampling sites in the urban area: industrial emission + plants, vehicle exhaust, fuel evaporation, combustion and industrial raw materials. Four sources were analyzed in the industrial area: industrial emission + plants, vehicle exhaust, fuel evaporation and combustion. Five sources were analyzed at the two sampling sites in the suburban area: industrial emission + plants, vehicle exhaust, fuel evaporation, combustion and solvent usage.

An observation approach in evaluation of ozone production to precursor changes during the COVID-19 lockdown

The increase of surface ozone during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in China has aroused great concern. In this study, we combine 1.5 years of measurements for ozone, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nitrogen oxide (NOX) at four sites to investigate the effect of COVID-19 lockdown on surface ozone in Dongguan, an industrial city in southern China. We show that the average concentrations of NOX and VOCs decreased by 70%–77% and 54%–68% during the lockdown compared to pre-lockdown, respectively. Based on the source apportionment of VOCs, the contribution of industrial solvent use reduced significantly (86%–94%) during the lockdown, and climbed back slowly along with the re-opening of the industry after lockdown. A slight increase in mean ozone concentration (3%–14%) was observed during the lockdown. The rise of ozone was the combined effect of substantial increase at night (58%–91%) and small reduction in the daytime (1%–17%). These conflicting observations in ozone response between day and night to emission change call for a more detailed approach to diagnostic ozone production response with precursor changes, rather than directly comparing absolute concentrations. We propose that the ratio of daily Ox (i.e. ozone + NO2) enhancement to solar radiation can provide a diagnostic parameter for ozone production response during the lockdown period. Smaller ratio of daily OX (ozone + NO2) enhancement to solar radiation during the lockdown were observed from the long-term measurements in Dongguan, suggesting significantly weakened photochemistry during the lockdown successfully reduces local ozone production. Our proposed approach can provide an evaluation of ozone production response to precursor changes from restrictions of social activities during COVID-19 epidemic and also other regional air quality abatement measures (e.g. public mega-events) around the globe.
