Gordon A. Stone, University of Bristol Awards: 2017 IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry Award; 2017 Excellence in Organometallic Chemistry Research Award in Spain (Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry); 2017 Best Research Group Award (Research and Future, Aragón, Spain); 2018 Medal of the Aragón Government Courts; 2018 Excellence in Research Award of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry Research: Synthesis of group 11 metal complexes and their use as luminescent materials, in catalysis, or in drug design Hobbies: Reading, travelling, music If I could have dinner with three famous scientists from history, they would be Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Rosalind Franklin. And I would ask them how was research and life being a scientist in their time. If I were not a scientist, I would be a writer. I chose chemistry as a career because I was very interested in mixing substances and see what happened. My biggest motivation is to discover new compounds with real applications. I would have liked to have discovered the use of immunotherapy for cancer treatment. The most important thing I learned from my parents is the importance of small things and the effort needed to achieve your dreams. If I won the lottery, I would do a long journey around the world. My favorite place on earth is Qaleraliq glacier in Greenland (with superb Northern Lights). I can never resist a good meal in good company. My favorite food is seafood paella; I always miss it when I am away from Spain. My favorite author (fiction) is Gabriel García Marquez, among others. My top three films of all time are The Godfather, Casablanca, All about Eve, and many others. My favorite piece of music is Adagio in G Minor by Tomaso Albinoni. My 5 top papers: 1“Axially Chiral Allenyl Gold Complexes”: A. Johnson, A. Laguna, M. C. Gimeno, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014 , 136, 12812. (Allenyl gold complexes are important organogold complexes relevant to intermediate catalytic gold species). 2“Luminescent Re(i) and Re(i)/Au(i) complexes as cooperative partners in cell imaging and cancer therapy”: V. Fernández-Moreira, I. Marzo, M. C. Gimeno, Chem. Sci. 2014 , 5, 4434. (Theranostic probes based on two different metal fragments to provide emissive properties in one side and biological activity in the other). 3“N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands as Modulators of Luminescence in Three-Coordinate Gold(I) Complexes with Spectacular Quantum Yields”: R. Visbal, I. Ospino, J. M. López de Luzuriaga, A. Laguna, M. C. Gimeno, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013 , 135, 4712. (Compounds with excellent photophysical properties, suitable for use as dopants in OLEDs). 4“Intensely Luminescent Gold(I)–Silver(I) Cluster Complexes with Tunable Structural Features”: Q.-M. Wang, Y.-A. Lee, O. Crespo, J. Deeton, C. Tang, H.-J. Gysling, M. C. Gimeno, C. Larraz, M. D. Villacampa, A. Laguna, R. Eisenberg, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2004 , 126, 9488. (Luminescent gold–silver clusters with a broad scope of color tunability). 5“Aurophilicity at Sulfur Centers: Synthesis and Structure of the Tetragold(I) species [(Ph3PAu)4S](CF3SO3)2⋅2 CH2Cl2”: F. Canales, M. C. Gimeno, P. G. Jones, A. Laguna, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. Engl. 1994, 33, 769; Angew. Chem. 1994, 106, 811. (Electron-deficient gold complexes stabilized by aurophilic interactions).
