The Young Professionals’ Guide to the Universe [Society News

Hello, world! Welcome to the “The Young Professionals’ Guide to the Universe” column. From this issue on, by the power granted to me by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS), I now declare this corner to belong to the SSCS Young Professionals (YPs) until the end of time! Does it sound a bit too audacious? OK, I will shorten the time: until artificial intelligence, machine learning, and software people push us all out of the job market by 2123. Until then, this is our safe space, and we will use this corner to cover the topics that might be of interest to early-career members of our Society and to give an additional voice to YPs. However, keep in mind that this is an inclusive corner. Young or not or young at heart, all are welcome. Please feel free to send your topic suggestions for future issues to korkut.tokgoz@sabanciuniv.edu.

Women in Circuits Corner: Women in Circuits Mentoring and Networking Bingo Event at ISSCC 2023 [Society News

Women in Circuits (WiC) organized a mentoring and networking event that was held at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) 2023 on Sunday evening, and participants played multiple rounds of getting-to-know-you bingo to prompt discussion prior to an open networking session. The bingo format was developed to encourage mingling and conversation between engineers attending the conference who might otherwise not get to talk to each other. Attendees were assigned to a table and provided with a 3 × 3 matrix to input professional and personal fun facts about themselves. The goal was to find commonalities with other people at the table, thus sparking conversation on shared interests; the first person to cross a row off got bingo! A Python script was used to automate the process of shuffling participants between rounds to new tables so that participants were matched with a unique set of people each time to maximize intermingling. The event was a resounding success, with more than 130 participants; the room was packed to capacity. Winners from each round won IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) swag such as T-shirts, umbrellas, and mugs.

IEEE SSCS/Electron Devices Society Bangladesh Joint Chapter Organizes “VLSI Design Competition 2022” [Chapters

To develop the semiconductor industry in any country, working knowledge of VLSI circuit design is crucial. To galvanize undergraduate students to learn and work in the burgeoning field of VLSI, a competition, “VLSI Design Competition 2022,” was jointly organized by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS)/Electron Devices Society (EDS) Bangladesh Joint Chapter and the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Neural Semiconductor Limited (NSL), one of the premier semiconductor companies in Bangladesh, sponsored the competition by providing financial and technical assistance.

IEEE SSCS Toronto Chapter Holds First In-Person Wireline Workshop [Chapters

The event began with handshakes and catching up with friends and peers who had not seen one another face to face since the COVID-19 pandemic started. The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Toronto Chapter last held an in-person event in October 2019. Judging by the smiles and record number of attendees (over 70) at this event, there was high demand for nonvirtual activities to restart in the Toronto area. All that people needed to motivate them to leave their home office was some free refreshments and an incredible lineup of talented local speakers.

One of the many IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) offerings is the monthly technical webinar program. Its mission is to host talks by authorities to help educate members about current trends and their technical foundations. Speakers have presented on a broad range of topics, from wake-up receivers to backscatter circuits and from postquantum cryptography to CMOS neural probes. The technical webinar program committee includes Filip Tavernier (webinar chair), Alvin Loke (webinar advisor), Shahriar Mirabbasi, Shanthi Pavan, Milin Zhang, Visvesh Sathe, Viola Schaffer, Po-Hsuan Wei, and Sergio Bampi. We thank last year’s speakers for their time and dedication!

SSCS PICO Chronicles: The Open Source Community is Growing Further and Supported by SSCS PICO [Society News

The previous year was another great success for the open source integrated circuit (IC) design ecosystem. It finished with two actions: the second IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) PICO open source IC design contest, known as <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">the Chipathon</i> , and the first Code-a-Chip travel grant award. The second Chipathon installment in 2022 attracted 55 teams across the globe, out of which volunteers selected 22 outstanding proposals. The finishing line was reached by 14 teams at the end of November (see the summaries in <xref ref-type="fig" rid="fig1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Figure 1</xref> and <xref ref-type="table" rid="table1" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Table 1</xref> ), after months of global joint action, including weekly technical checkup meetings and conversations on the bustling IEEE-SSCS-DC-22 Slack channel.

Through the Looking Glass—The 2023 Edition: Trends in solid-state circuits from ISSCC

The International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) is the flagship conference of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society. The theme for ISSCC 2023 is “Building on 70 Years of Innovation in Solid-State Circuit Design.” The IC design community has proved to be agile and resilient in a world scarred by the worldwide pandemic, and this year’s ISSCC commemorates the 70th anniversary of ISSCC with an edition that is more than ever focused on innovation. To enhance our lives and support increasingly more innovative developments, ISSCC promotes and shares new circuit ideas with potential to advance the state of the art for IC design and enable systems with ever-improving functionality and efficiency.

Guest Editorial Introduction to the Special Section on the 2021 Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC)

The Special Issue of the IEEE Journal of Solid- State Circuits (JSSC) includes some of the highlights of the best papers presented at the 2021 Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC). This year, the A-SSCC 2021 is held as a hybrid conference on November 7–10, 2021 with attendees having the option to join the in-person meeting in Busan, Korea, or participate virtually through on-line platform. As one of the five conferences fully sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, the A-SSCC was in its 17th appearance in 2021 since its inauguration in 2005 in Taiwan. Rotating among Asian countries, the A-SSCC is quickly becoming one of the leading global forums for the presentation of advances in solid-state circuits and system-on-a-chip (SoC). From 2021, only two-page format articles are allowed for submission and publication.

I Would like to thank the Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) leadership and Administrative Committee for appointing me as the new Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the IEEE Journal of Solid- State Circuits (JSSC). It is both a great honor and opportunity to lead the flagship SSCS journal. I want to additionally thank the outgoing EiC Prof. Pavan Hanumolu of University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, who has been very helpful in the transition this year.

My three-year term as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE JOURNAL OF SOLID- STATE CIRCUITS (JSSC) has ended. Serving the Journal’s readers and authors has been a great privilege and honor. Outstanding Associate Editors, Guest Editors, and reviewers who helped the Journal with great diligence and remarkable commitment to excellence have played a unique role in fulfilling the tremendous responsibility the Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) bestowed upon me. Thanks to their efforts, the Journal continues to be one of the most widely read and cited among all the IEEE publications. I feel a deep sense of gratitude to them for their efforts.

The eight papers in this special issue were presented at the 2021 IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS) in Berlin, Germany, from October 6–9, 2021. BioCAS 2021 was jointly sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society, IEEE Solid-State Circuits (SSC) Society, and the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMB) Society.

This Special Issue of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC) features a Special Section on key invited papers presented at the 2021 Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits Symposium (RFIC Symposium), held in hybrid mode on June 6–8 (in-person) and June 21–July 20, 2021 (online). The RFIC Symposium is the world’s premier conference focused on RF and millimeter-wave (mm-wave)-integrated circuits and systems technology. It shares the venue with the IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS) as part of the Microwave Week and is co-sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society.

Guest Editorial 2021 Custom Integrated Circuits Conference

This Special Section of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC) features expanded versions of key articles presented at the 2021 Custom Integrated Circuits Conference (CICC), which for the second time in a row was fully virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. Originally planned to be held in Austin, TX, USA, the unpredictability of COVID-19 quickly lead the conference organization to decide to (again) go for a fully virtual format from April 25 to 30, 2021. With all the experience of the previous year, where CICC was the first IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) conference to go virtual, and that of subsequent SSCS and other conferences, it was comparatively smooth sailing.

Welcome to the Fall 2022 Issue of IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine! [Editor’s Note

The theme of this fourth issue of the 14th year of the magazine is “Women in Circuits.” This year’s guest editor, Qun Jane Gu, has invited four contributions from female leaders in the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS). “Women in Circuits” issues strive to promote diversity in the SSCS with the vision to inspire younger readers, to improve the advancement of female members, and to increase the visibility of women within the SSCS.
