Experimental and numerical investigations on soil–water dynamics in Moistube irrigation under dynamically regulated working pressure heads: scenario simulations under maize cultivation

Moistube irrigation (MTI) accurately delivers moisture to root zone through subsurface nanotube irrigators. How to dynamically adjust the working pressure head (WPH) considering crop evapotranspiration remains unstudied. Here, the Moistube discharge characteristics, wetting front (WF) morphology, and soil water content (SWC) distribution under adjusted WPH (0 → 1, 0 → 2, 1 → 2, 1 → 0, 2 → 0 and 2 → 1 m) were experimentally investigated. HYDRUS 2D model was employed to reproduce the soil water dynamics and validated against the experimental data. Maize growth scenarios under regulated WPH for three representative regions (Nanjing, Hami, and Siping in China) with typical hydrological years were performed. The relatively long-term Moistube discharge, SWC, and deep percolation were analyzed. Results demonstrated that flexible WPH adjustment regulated Moistube discharge, the advance velocity of WF, and SWC within the wetting patterns. With increased (or decreased) WPH, the Moistube discharge rate precipitously raised (or descended) to values positively correlated with WPHs. WPHs of 0, 1, and 2 m corresponded to discharge rates of 0.63–0.76, 2.15–3.34, and 5.53–6.41 cm2 h−1, respectively. WF also noticeably accelerated (or decelerated) as WPH, meanwhile SWC within the wetting pattern increased (or decreased). Upon WPH increase, the elevated SWC intensified the deviation (δ) of wetting body centroid from Moistube. HYDRUS 2D model accurately reproduced the Moistube discharge rate and WF advance (R2 ≥ 0.90, NSE ≥ 0.70, RSR close to 0), corroborating the feasibility of treating Moistube as a heavy clay. Surprisingly, the Moistube discharge rate obeyed exponential decreasing trend over time after WPH increased but abnormally displayed restrained trends followed by rebounding after WPH decreased. SWC and the deviation of wetting body centroid from Moistube exhibited discrepancies in absolute values but consistencies in trends between the observed and simulated data. Scenario analyses of maize cultivation revealed that regulating WPH accurately replenished crop evapotranspiration and maintained appropriate SWC environments. Regulated WPH in MTI was efficacious in reducing deep percolation and suitable for arid regions. These results could contribute to intelligent MTI by automatically maintaining a balance between Moistube discharge and crop water requirements.

Experimental study on dredged slurry treatment with straw as horizonal drains by vacuum preloading

This paper presents a novel method of treating high water content dredged slurry by vacuum pre-pressure using woven rice straw as horizontal drainage boards (SHDs). This not only helps to avoid the impact of plastic drainage boards on the environment, but also helps to utilize agricultural related waste. The study aimed to investigate the effect of SHDs degradation on the vacuum transfer within the horizontal drainage boards and the consolidation characteristics of dredged slurry. Indoor vacuum preloading model tests were conducted to investigate soil settlement, straw degradation, vacuum variation and water content distribution within the drainage board. The results show that SHDs can significantly improve the consolidation of dredged slurry. The closer the straw is to the interface between the drainage board and the vacuum pipe, the greater the degree of degradation. The water content was distributed with depth in an oblique “z” shape, while a point with higher water content existed at 1/3 of the soil above the drainage boards. In addition, the low water content zone around the drainage board shows an elliptical shape due to the influence of gravity. These research results have some reference value for the ecological treatment of dredged slurry and straw.

Using phenology to unravel differential soil water use and productivity in a semiarid savanna

AbstractSavannas are water‐limited ecosystems characterized by two dominant plant types: trees and an understory primarily made up grass. Different phenology and root structures of these plant types complicate how savanna primary productivity responds to changes in water availability. We tested the hypothesis that productivity in savannas is controlled by the temporal and vertical distribution of soil water content (SWC) and differences in growing season length of understory and tree plant functional types. To quantify the relationship between tree, understory, and savanna‐wide phenology and productivity, we used PhenoCam and satellite observations surrounding an eddy covariance tower at a semiarid savanna site in Arizona, USA. We distinguished between SWC across two different depth intervals (shallow, <0–30 cm and deep, >30–100 cm). We found that tree greenness increased with SWC at both depths, while understory greenness was only sensitive to the shallower SWC measurements. Onset of ecosystem dormancy, estimated from satellite observations close to the eddy covariance tower, explained more variability in annual gross primary productivity (GPP) than in other phenometrics. Higher SWC led to an extended growing season, caused by delayed dormancy in trees, but the understory showed no evidence of delayed dormancy in wetter periods. We infer that the timing of ecosystem scale dormancy, driven by trees, is important in understanding changes in a savanna's GPP. These findings highlight the important effects of rainfall during the winter. These findings suggest that savanna GPP is conditional on different responses to moisture availability in each of the dominant vegetation components.

Effect of soil conditioning on the permeability of coarse-grained soil in mechanized tunnelling

In coarse-grained soils, the reduction of soil permeability via conditioning can effectively prevent groundwater from entering the chamber, thus providing better tunnel face control and ultimately preventing excessive settlements of the surface. In this study, several mixtures of coarse-grained and soil-foam mixtures were utilized in experiments. In which, effects of the foam expansion ratio, foam injection ratio, soil water content, pressure, and grain size distribution on the soil permeability were investigated. In these experiments, two soil types of poorly graded sand (SP) and poorly graded sand with silt and gravel (SP-SM), with different grain sizes were utilized. Based on the experimental results, it has been observed that the soil permeability increases with increasing foam expansion ratio, water pressure, and the coarse-grained portion of the soil. Meanwhile, soil permeability decreases with increasing foam injection ratio and soil water content. Based on the observations, it can be inferred that optimal soil permeability for soil moisture of 15 %, the pressure of 1 bar with a certain grain size occurs at a foam expansion ratio of 7.5 and a foam injection ratio of 52 %.

Quantification of the water exchange in an agroforestry system under the background of film-mulching drip irrigation of farmland

Water availability is the most critical constraint for the healthy and sustainable development of agroforestry systems in arid and semi-arid regions; consequently, it is essential to clarify soil water dynamics and quantify water exchange within agroforestry systems. In this study, a two-year field experiment and a HYDRUS-2D numerical simulation model were used to clarify the characteristics of the two-dimensional distribution of soil water and the horizontal water exchange in an agroforestry system under the background of film-mulching drip irrigation of farmland. The results showed that the HYDRUS-2D for agroforestry systems had high accuracy in calculating the water flow and capturing the dynamic water exchange in various soil layers. The model simulation results showed that there were differences in soil water content between forest belt and farmland, and the two-dimensional distribution of soil water content showed vertical water transport and horizontal water exchange in the agroforestry system. During the growing season, the horizontal water flow exchange was mainly from the forest belt side and the farmland side to the agroforestry transition zone, with inflows of 61.3 mm and 199 mm at depths of 0–100 cm, respectively. A long-term severe "water stress zone" developed at a depth of about 0–40 cm in the forest belt, so the 0–40 cm soil depth was the main area of water competition in the agroforestry system. The results could provide a reference for the long-term healthy development of agroforestry systems and the management of agricultural water resources in oasis-desert systems under film-mulching drip irrigation conditions.

Evaluating soil water movement and soil water content uniformity under sprinkler irrigation with different soil texture and irrigation uniformity using numerical simulation

Water movement and its distribution uniformity in the soil are essential for the design of sprinkler irrigation systems. They are both crucial factors influencing nutrient migration and the productivity of crops. In this study, a new numerical simulation method was proposed to investigate the soil water movement in sprinkler irrigation under nonuniform infiltration boundary conditions using COMSOL software. Besides, two soil tank experiments were conducted to test the reliability of the simulation model. Finally, the model was applied to evaluate the effects of sprinkler irrigation uniformity, soil texture, and initial soil water content on soil wetting patterns and soil water content uniformity. The results showed that the COMSOL-2D predictions of the vertical wetting fronts were in good agreement with the experimental data. The soil texture and initial soil water content influenced the soil wetting pattern and the risks of surface runoff and deep percolation in sprinkler irrigation systems. When the water application rate was 11.35 mm h−1 with an irrigation duration of 10 h, it was easy to cause surface runoff in silty clay loam while deep percolation in loamy sand. Additionally, when the initial soil water content is high, it should be better to avoid irrigation or cut down the irrigation duration to prevent percolation. The water within the soil was more uniformly distributed than that applied through a sprinkler irrigation system. The uniformity coefficient of soil water content distribution (CUs) increased from 87.75 % to 95.56 %, as the uniformity coefficient of sprinkler irrigation (CU) increased from 40.74 % to 82.41 %. Although a higher initial soil water content brought a higher soil CUs value, it also led to a higher risk of percolation. The experimental and simulation results indicated that the COMSOL-2D model could be used to accurately simulate soil water movement in sprinkler irrigation and determine the suitable operation mode of low-pressure sprinklers.

Study on Spatiotemporal Transport Characteristics of Soil Moisture in Layered Heterogeneous Vadose Zone Based on HYDRAS-3D

The heterogeneity of layered soils affects the transport processes of water in the vadose zone. However, the mechanism of soil moisture transport in the vadose zone under heterogeneous media conditions, especially the three-dimensional transport mechanism, is a frontier problem to be studied. In order to reveal the law of soil water transport in the vadose zone under heterogeneous media, this paper constructs a three-dimensional model of water transport using HYDRAS-3D (V 2.x) software through in situ tests of water transport in 3 × 3 × 4 m sample and verifies and analyzes the model. The vertical distribution and variability of soil water content and the temporal and spatial rules of soil water transversal transport at the soil–layer interface were analyzed. The results indicate that after adjusting the parameters in the HYDRAS-3D model using measured values, the simulation results are reasonable, and the model has high reliability. To represent the water content variability characteristics of the test tube profile, water movement in the vadose zone was classified as follows: (I) steady period (April–September, less affected by rainfall), (II) slow change period (January–March), and (III) rainfall rapid change period (June, when the impact of rainfall on the test cylinder was greater). The two largest values of the soil water potential variation gradient, 19.9 and 17.8 cm/d, were observed in the silty clay layer of the test cylinder, and the influence of evaporation and infiltration in the silty clay layer was most notable at the interface. The lateral transport of soil water at the interface was influenced to a certain degree by the layered heterogeneity, wherein the fine sand layer exhibited the most pronounced impact. This was followed by silt and silty clay layers, with the silt layer showing the lowest degree of influence. The research results can provide scientific reference for the rational planning of water resources in the Yinchuan Plain.

Effects of vegetation on the spatiotemporal distribution of soil water content in re-vegetated slopes using temporal stability analysis

The temporal stability of soil water is a critical state variable affecting hydrological process and structural stability of slopes. In this study, the effect of vegetation on the spatiotemporal characteristics of soil water content (SWC) was assessed via temporal stability analysis. Three types of re-vegetated slopes (grass, shrub, and grass-shrub) were constructed to explore the spatiotemporal distribution of the SWC at depths of 0–100 cm. Then, the effects of different vegetation covers on the SWC were explored. The coefficient of variation, the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, the mean relative difference, and the index of temporal stability were utilized to demonstrate the temporal stability of the SWC. Finally, a method of estimating the soil water status of re-vegetated slopes based on representative locations was developed. The results revealed that soil water dynamics were considerably governed by vegetation and rainfall. The vegetation cover considerably reduced the similarity of the spatial distribution pattern of the soil water, which tended to be more stable under grass cover. The weight-based prediction method developed in this study can more accurately estimate the overall soil water state of re-vegetated slopes. It provides a theoretical basis for the reasonable layout of SWC monitoring points and guidance for the ecological restoration of engineering slopes.

Plot Layout Method of Field Experiment for Wheat with Border Irrigation Based on Soil Water Content Heterogeneity

The objective of this research was to improve the accuracy and representativeness of experimental plot studies by determining the optimum plot area and replication number for winter wheat with border irrigation. Considering the spatial distribution of soil water content, the border effect in relation to crop growth, and the lateral seepage of soil water, we sought to study and optimize the area and specifications of irrigation experiment plots with different levels and replicates. The results show that the experimental irrigation plot consisted of two parts—the core area and the guard area. The most suitable area for the experiment plot core area, with a single level and without replicates, was 60–80 m2. The core experimental area can be arranged with two replicates per 40 m2, with differences in soil moisture content between the treatments reaching more than 15% at the two experiment levels. Each plot comprised two replicates, or if they were 20 m2, then they contained three replicates; when the soil moisture contents differed between 10% and 15%, the area of each replicate plot was 80 m2, comprising two replicates, or 30 m2 with three replicates. When the difference in soil moisture content between the treatments exceeded 15% with the three experimental levels, the area of each plot was 30 m2 and they contained two replicates, or 20 m2 containing three replicates; at differences of 10% to 15%, each replicate plot was 50 m2 containing two replicates, or 30 m2 with three replicates. The experimental plots were rectangular, with irrigation furrows dug lengthwise; therefore, the plots had aspect ratios between 7:1 and 5:1. The width of the buffer area was over 60 cm. The effect of the border on plant height and LAI for winter wheat primarily emerged with one to three rows (20–60 cm) at the jointing stage, while the effect on grain yield and biomass in winter wheat mainly emerged with one to two rows (20–40 cm). The conclusions of this research will inform the development of surface irrigation methods for silt loam in northern Henan, as a reference for optimizing experiment plots employing border irrigation with different soil textures.

Tritium and trees: A bomb peak perspective on soil water dynamics in semi-arid apple orchards

Understanding the relationship between agroforest age and soil water dynamics is crucial for effective land and water resources management. However, the complexities of these dynamics, such as soil water recharge and depletion, hamper in-depth understanding, particularly in water-scarce regions. In this study, we examined soil water recharge and depletion in relation to the stand age of apple trees, a widely planted and representative deep-rooted agroforest, over four years in a semi-arid region on China’s Loess Plateau (CLP). We collected soil cores to >20 m depth from four apple orchards (referred to as ‘agroforests’) with variable stand ages (established in 2008, 2005, 1998, and 1994). For comparison, we selected adjacent cropland as land use prior to agroforestry practices (‘control’). We measured soil water content and tritium distributions to model soil water dynamics and estimate water ages across different soil profiles. Our results show that recharge amounts (and depths) in shallow soils were 298.4 mm (7 m), 303.4 mm (6.6 m), 300.6 mm (5.4 m), and 483.1 mm (7.6 m), whereas deep soils had net depletions of 111.1 mm, 391.9 mm, 192.8 mm, and 108.9 mm for AP2008, AP2005, AP1998, and AP1994, respectively. The tritium peak depths, which indicate the 1963 bomb peak depth, significantly differed between agroforested and non-agroforested plots. In particular, agroforestation reduced the seepage velocity of soil water over 20 years. Furthermore, our tritium tracer water age model suggests that the age of transpired deep soil water exceeded 200 years in the oldest orchard. These findings highlight a complex interaction between newly infiltrated water and existing water, possibly due to variations in soil pore size distributions. The results of this study offer valuable insights into the ecohydrological impacts of agroforestation on the CLP and in similar climatic regions.

A novel approximate solution to slope rainfall infiltration

Slope rainfall infiltration is a critical component of the Earth's hydrologic processes. Although various infiltration models have been proposed to simulate rainfall infiltration, simple and accurate ones are still scarce. This work developed a non-integral infiltration model for sloping surfaces, called modified approximate solutions under constant pressure conditions (MASCP). New expressions were proposed to improve slope infiltration simulation by introducing a developing saturated zone in soil water content (SWC) profile to quantify the role of ponding water during infiltration. The MASCP was then extended to simulate the infiltration with uniform and non-uniform initial SWC distributions under complex rainfall patterns. The model performance was evaluated by comparing with Hydrus-1D and the sloping Green-Ampt model for four distinct textured soils. The results demonstrated that the ponding time and infiltration rate simulated by the MASCP agreed well with those by Hydrus-1D at all given conditions. Besides, the MASCP yielded higher simulation accuracy than the sloping Green-Ampt model, especially for coarse-textured soils, low rainfall intensity, and long rainfall hiatus. In conclusion, the MASCP is a simple and accurate computation tool for slope rainfall infiltration modeling.

Effects of Biomass and Soil Water Content Distribution on Cosmic Ray Neutron Probe Measurement

Cosmic ray neutron probes (CRNPs) provide continuous monitoring of average near-surface soil water content (SWC) on hectometer scales. However, the performance of CRNPs on surfaces of highly heterogeneous vegetation and SWC remains uncertain. This study evaluated three vegetation calibration methods with the correction of vegetation distribution developed for a CRNP on the Loess Plateau of China. Three plots with different vegetation distributions were selected and equipped with CRNPs and SWC sensors, and their biomass as well as distribution were measured by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a RedEdge multispectral camera. We found that the parameter N0, which is neutron flux in dry soil, was best represented by the biomass at average growth conditions of the monitoring period, yielding the lowest RMSE (0.068). The Veg–N0 vegetation calibration method reduced the RMSE the most between the CRNP SWC and the Kriging-weighted SWC, and the correction of the spatial distribution of the vegetation further reduced the RMSE. The cooperation between the CRNP and the UAV could obtain the regional averaged SWC accurately. This study makes up for the lack of vegetation calibration for the CRNP on the Loess Plateau, which should help develop sustainable vegetation management and ecohydrological management strategies on the Loess Plateau, so as to protect water security in the region.

Coordination of available soil water content and root distribution modifies water source apportionment of the shrub plant Caragana korshinskii

Stable isotopes have been widely used to identify root water uptake (RWU) by classifying potential water sources as distinct endmembers and evaluating their contributions to xylem water. However, the estimated contributions of endmembers (mainly soil layers) are usually based on variations in soil water isotopes alone. Available soil water and root distributions are key limiting factors of RWU but are rarely considered in water source apportionment. Thus, we have compared the relative contributions of distinct soil layers based on mean soil water isotope values, and values weighted by both available soil water content (AWC) and root weight density (RWD), to RWU of Caragana korshinskii. We derived these values (hereafter mean and weighted contributions, respectively) using three Bayesian mixing models (SIAR, simmr and MixSIAR) at three sites with different water conditions. We calculated the differences between the mean and weighted contributions (DC) and the accumulation of the absolute value of DC (AADC) to analyse the differences between them and their relationships with AWC and RWD. Both the weighted and mean contributions varied with sites and models. We obtained the following AADC values: 27, 8 and 11 % for Sites 1–3, respectively, using SIAR; 39, 13 and 14 %, respectively, using simmr; 68, 40 and 25 %, respectively, using MixSIAR. We detected a significant correlation between DC and RWD when AWC ≤ 6 %, as well as a significant correlation between DC and AWC when AWC > 6 %, indicating that the influence of RWD on DC depended on soil water conditions. Based on our findings, endmembers weighted by AWC and RWD altered the proportion of water source allocation relative to non-weighted endmembers, while the magnitude of the effect was related to the model used. Thus, we suggest careful consideration of the characterisation of endmember isotopes and model selection when partitioning plant water sources using δ2H and δ18O.

Parameterization of the Response Function of Sesame to Drought and Salinity Stresses

In drylands, poor rains combined with high evaporation rates increase the risks of soil salinization in addition to drought stress. Here, we determined the values of the parameters in the Feddes root water uptake function for sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) under drought and salinity stresses in a pot experiment using “Lebap-55”, which has been bred for the drylands of the Aral Sea Basin but is moderately sensitive to salinity stress. We measured the hourly values of the transpiration, soil moisture, and salinity in the upper and lower soil layers in pots, solar radiation, and root distribution. The values were quantified by two methods. The bulk method uses only daily pot weight data, and the average soil water content and salt concentration are back-calculated from the mass balance. The inverse method uses the monitored values of the soil water content and salinity as well as daily weight data and solar radiation. Both methods could successfully estimate all the parameter values for both stresses. The bulk method performed better under drought stress, even without the measured soil water content or root distribution. It also had satisfactory accuracy in estimating the values under salinity stress. Both methods performed better under drought stress than under salinity stress. The parameter values determined here could be used for irrigation scheduling and salinity management using numerical models for the studied crop.

Composition and vertical distribution of agricultural soil Macrofauna community after an extreme high temperature event in the summer of 2022

Extreme high temperature (EHT) events are becoming more frequent and prolonged due to global climate change. Predicting the effects of EHT events on agricultural soil fauna remains a major challenge. In order to assess the response of community composition and vertical distribution of soil fauna to EHT events, this study investigated the soil macrofauna communities in facility agricultural farmlands at the end of an EHT event in East China in 2022 and eighteen days after. The results showed that the taxonomic richness and abundances of the soil macrofauna community were reduced eighteen days after the EHT event. However, changes in abundance were taxonomically dependent: individuals of ants (Pheidole indica), centipedes (Himantariidae) and crickets decreased significantly, while Enchytraeidae and earthworms increased. Soil water content was an important factor determining taxonomic richness at the end of the EHT event and the abundance of earthworms eighteen days after the EHT event. The maximum values of taxonomic richness and abundance of the soil macrofauna community were observed in the surface layer (0–10 cm) at the end of the EHT event and eighteen days after. Earthworms burrowed into the deeper layer at the end of the EHT event, but moved to the surface layer eighteen days after the EHT event. These results showed that most soil fauna taxa experienced adverse effects posed by EHT events, while the earthworm and Enchytraeidae had abilities to increase their abundances rapidly by EHT events. This study suggests that soil water content and vertical distribution should be considered when assessing the impact of an EHT event on soil biodiversity.

Hyperspectral inversion of soil water and salt information based on fractional order derivative technology.

Accurate and efficient acquisition of soil water and salt information is a prerequisite for the improvement and sustainable utilization of saline lands. With the ground field hyperspectral reflectance and the measured soil water-salt content as data sources, we used the fractional order differentiation (FOD) technique to process hyperspectral data (with a step length of 0.25). The optimal FOD order was explored at the correlation level of spectral data and soil water-salt information. We constructed two-dimensional spectral index, support vector machine regression (SVR) and geographically weighted regression (GWR). The inverse model of soil water-salt content was finally evaluated. The results showed that FOD technique could reduce the hyperspectral noise and explore the potential spectral information to a certain extent, improve the correlation between spectrum and characteristics, with the highest correlation coefficients of 0.98, 1.35 and 0.33. The combination of characteristic bands screened by FOD and two-dimensional spectral index were more sensitive to characteristics than one-dimensional bands, with the optimal responses of order 1.5, 1.0 and 0.75. The optimal combinations of bands for maximum absolute correction coefficient of SMC were 570, 1000, 1010, 1020, 1330 and 2140 nm, pH were 550, 1000, 1380 and 2180 nm, and salt content were 600, 990, 1600 and 1710 nm, respectively. Compared with the original spectral reflectance, the validation coefficients of determination (Rp2) of the optimal order estimation models for SMC, pH, and salinity were improved by 1.87, 0.94 and 0.56, respectively. The overall GWR accuracy in the proposed model was better than SVR, where the GWR optimal order estimation models Rp2 were 0.866, 0.904 and 0.647, and the relative per-centage difference were 3.54, 4.25 and 1.86, respectively. The overall spatial distribution of soil water and salt content in the study area was characterized by low in the west and high in the east, with more serious soil alkalinization problems in the northwest and less severe in the northeast. The results would provide scientific basis for the hyperspectral inversion of soil water and salt in the Yellow River Irrigation Area and a new strategy for the implementation and management of precision agriculture in saline soil areas.

A pipeline robot system for monitoring soil water content distribution

Monitoring soil water content (SWC) distribution is crucial for better understanding soil water dynamics and accurate hydrological modeling. In this study, a pipeline robot system for monitoring SWC distribution is designed to improve the current technical problems of insufficient measurement distance and low positioning accuracy of the existing SWC monitoring platform. The system consists of a pipeline robot, a fixed base station and a PVC pipe. The robot could fit into a 55-mm-diameter PVC pipe to measure SWC distribution horizontally, vertically, or at any angle to the horizontal direction. The base station serves as a data collector and also supplies power and distance information for recharging and positioning the robot, respectively. A series of tests for evaluating the performance of the pipeline robot system were conducted. Field experiments were also conducted to monitor soil water infiltration and horizontal distribution of SWC of crop root zone at three plots. The results showed that the minimum radius of volume of sensitivity of the dielectric sensor is about 2.25 cm. The robot for mobile measurement performed stable both in horizontal and vertical directions and the response of the dielectric sensor output to different dielectric materials is significant. The accumulated error of the encoder is effectively decreased from 4.3% to 1.2% by correcting the position error using the laser ranging sensor. The measured SWCs during the calibration experiment were highly correlated with those obtained by the drying method (R2 = 0.990 and RMSE = 0.0181 cm3 cm−3). The results of the field experiments demonstrated that the system is feasible for monitoring soil water infiltration in the vertical direction and SWC distributions of crop root zone horizontally at the three plots, indicating that the potential application of the developed system for long-term monitoring of SWC distribution under field conditions in the near future.

Soil Water Content at Planting Affects Determining Agricultural Drought for Rainfed Spring Wheat

Agricultural drought often refers to water deficit in soil caused by a shortage of precipitation during a specific period in crop growing season, thus leading to final crop production failure. However, soil water content during planting may be related to the final yield of crop. Therefore, the soil water content at planting could have a great impact on determining whether agricultural drought occurs during crop growth and development. In the current study, we used soil water content at planting at 0–50 cm depth, the spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield from 1987 to 2011, and precipitation from 1971 to 2011 at Dingxi, Gansu Province, China, intending to quantify the influence of soil water content at planting on determining agricultural drought for rainfed spring wheat. The response of spring wheat yield to growing season precipitation comprised two different linear relationships defined by whether the soil water content at planting was greater or less than 100 mm. With the identical amount of soil water content at planting and precipitation during main growth period, a higher soil water content at planting resulted in a greater spring wheat yield. Soil water content at planting was more effective than growing season precipitation for increasing spring wheat yield. According to the probability distributions of soil water content during planting and growing season precipitation, we concluded that 28.6% of the years studued involved agricultural drought for rainfed spring wheat in the Dingxi of Gansu province, China. This analysis, which quantified the relative importance of soil water content at planting (29.97 kg ha−1 per mm) and during growing season precipitation (12.21 kg ha−1 per mm) to determine yield and agricultural drought occurrence for spring wheat, suggests that improving the amount of soil water storage before crop planting is an important way to deal with agricultural drought.

Response of soil hydrothermal processes within the active layer to variable alpine vegetation conditions on the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau

Alpine vegetation plays an important role in the thermal stability of the permafrost under a warming climate, as it affects ground hydrothermal dynamics. The response of soil hydrothermal dynamics in the active layer to permafrost degradation under different alpine grassland types is unclear on the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau. In this study, long-term soil temperature and soil water content in the active layer were monitored in situ from October 2010 to December 2018 at five sites in the Kaixinling permafrost region on the interior Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau along the Qinghai–Tibet Railway. The sites included an alpine steppe (AS), three alpine meadows (AM) with different degrees of degraded vegetation, and an alpine swamp meadow (ASM). Based on field-monitored data, the variations in soil temperature, soil water content, and freeze–thaw processes were examined in the active layer. The response characteristics of the soil hydrothermal processes to climate change were analysed under the different alpine grasslands. The results showed that the duration of the thawing and freezing stages of the active layer of the AMs was shorter than that of the ASM and the AS. The average mean annual soil temperature (MAST) in the active layer of the AM ((−1.25 ± 0.50) °C) was lower than those in the AS ((−0.71 ± 0.39) °C) and ASM ((−0.45 ± 0.57) °C), while the AM had the highest rate of soil temperature increase ((0.2 ± 0.06) °C per year). The annual amplitude of ground temperature in the active layer increased with the transition direction of the alpine vegetation type from ASM to AM to AS. The small surface offset (SO) and thermal offset (TO) (absolute values) indicated that the ground thermal state of the AM was more unstable, as it was more sensitive to the increase in air temperature than the ASM or the AS. Soil properties controlled the distribution of soil water content within the active layer, but vegetation improved the shallow soil structure by producing more belowground phytomass, thus, enhancing soil water content in the 0–30 cm layer. The average soil water content at depths of 0–30 cm was directly proportional (p < 0.05) to the phytomass. Soil water contents at depths of 0–30 cm in the ASM ((37.7 ± 5.3)%) and the AM ((40.8 ± 5.9)%) were significantly higher than those in the AS ((22.7 ± 3.2)%). These results provide valuable insight into the hydrothermal interactions between the degradation of permafrost and alpine vegetation under a warming climate.

Estimation of surface soil moisture by combining a structural equation model and an artificial neural network (SEM-ANN)

Soil moisture is an important variable of the environment that directly affects hydrological, ecological, and climatic processes. However, owing to the influence of soil type, soil structure, topography, vegetation, and human activities, the distribution of soil water content is spatially heterogeneous. It is difficult to accurately monitor the distribution of soil moisture over large areas. To investigate the direct or indirect influence of various factors on soil moisture and obtain accurate soil moisture inversion results, we used structural equation models (SEMs) to determine the structural relationships between these factors and the degree of their influence on soil moisture. These models were subsequently transformed into the topology of artificial neural networks (ANN). Finally, a structural equation model coupled with an artificial neural network was constructed (SEM-ANN) for soil moisture inversion. The results showed the following: (1) The most important predictor of the spatial variability of soil moisture in the April was the temperature–vegetation dryness index, while land surface temperature was the most important predictor in the August; (2) After the ANN model was improved, the inversion accuracy of surface soil moisture by SEM-ANN model was improved, and the R2 of verification set was increased by 0.01 and 0.02 in April and August, respectively, and the relative analysis error was reduced by 0.5 % and 1.13 %. (3) There were no significant differences in soil moisture distribution trends between the April and August.
