Trigger finger secondary to soft tissue chondroma

Although chondromata are the most common bony tumours in the hand, soft tissue chondromata are much less frequent. We report a case of trigger finger secondary to a soft tissue chondroma.

Soft tissue chondromas are benign, relativery rare lesions, characterized by tenosynovial metaplastic origin, and they are predominantly located in the hands and feet.We report a case of soft tissue chondroma arising in the tendon of the biceps brachii, and briefly review the features of these lesions.

The authors present several rare cartilaginous tumours and pseudotumours of the extraskeletal tissues in an unusual situation, the hand. They present three different varieties depending on the site and histogenesis of the tumour: 1) Intra-articular synovial chondromatosis. 2) Tenosynovial chondromatosis. 3) Soft tissue chondroma (extra-synovial). The authors also discuss the histogenesis of these lesions: synovial for the first two types and an extra-synovial connective tissue origin for the last type.

Case report: A large soft-tissue chondroma arising from the posterior mediastinum

A case of a large intrathoracic soft-tissue chondroma arising from the posterior mediastinum is described. The plain radiographic and computed tomography (CT) findings are correlated with the histopathology.

Soft tissue chondromas in the hand

Benign chondromas are rare soft tissue tumors of the hand. Five cases are presented. These tumors are generally seen as a painless lump, easily removed, as shown in three cases. Two additional patients had pain and stiffness at the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. They demonstrate the occasional difficulty in making an accurate preoperative diagnosis, requiring a more extensive exposure at surgery as they can extend in various directions and may involve the tendon sheath or joint.

Soft tissue chondromas are uncommon tumours but when they do occur the hands and the feet are a common site (Lichtenstein, 1964; Dahlin, 1974; Chung, 1978). We have experience in the management of two cases each of whom had a chondromatous lesion in the index finger of the left hand which exhibited features that could have been considered sinister to those unfamiliar with this lesion and could lead to over treatment.

Soft tissue chondroma--a study of 15 tumours.

Fifteen cases of soft tissue chondroma have been reviewed. This lesion shows an equal sex incidence and occurs predominantly in middle-aged individuals. The majority arise in the hands and feet. Histologically these tumours are largely composed of adult-type hyaline cartilage, but in all cases foci show nuclear atypia and pleomorphism. In cartilaginous lesions of the axial skeleton or large limb bones this would probably have led to a diagnosis of well differentiated chondrosarcoma. Despite these worrying features none of the seven cases for which follow-up information is available recurred. The importance of recognizing the benign nature of these little-known tumours is stressed. The differential diagnosis of soft tissue cartilaginous tumours is briefly discussed.
